  • Thank you so much, TreeHouse. I installed Android Studio 3 years ago wanting to learn to build an app. I ended up uninstalling it without getting anything done probably after 2.5 years. Not a damn thing, seriously, because couldn’t find a source or someone who could teach from basic. But with this article, I managed to get my first ever app done in my life in 2 hours, including re-installation of Android Studio.

  • Good article. One suggestion I would make is to show the final application before demonstrating the development steps to create it. Doing so will provide context so that the audience knows why things are being added/modified/configured along the way. Another suggestion (for this article) would be to skip the section about installing/configuring Android Studio, especially when opting for a custom installation. This activity should be described in a separate article dedicated to that topic.

  • I’m going to make this when I go home right in my bed! It took me two damn years to find a article that ACTUALLY teaches HOW to make an app (hope I’m not the only one). Maybe it’s because he goes straight to the point, his presence was very welcoming that made me stay, was easy to understand step by step and didn’t run his mouth about something off topic like how he likes milk in coffee, what he did the morning other irrelevant b/s like most Youtubers and the half beginning in their articles. I know this doesn’t explain everything about coding like some are mentioning and why he did certain things but I’m willing to learn more and this beats what I was trying to look for way before. I have a feeling when I following through this entire article again, it will worked and I’m still a neophyte in these kind of things though I’m someone that likes to draw and be creative. Thank you!   • Guys this doesnt work like that in newer versions of Android Studio, I get the Error: “Cannot create an instance of an abstract class>”. There is really nothing to this on the web, but you need to remove those “()” behing Random, so not “val rand = Random().next…” instead “val rand = Random.nextIn…” Then it works

  • I’m not able to run the code. Random() needs to be Random and now I’m getting Unable to start activity ComponentInfo{com.myapp.randomizer/com.myapp.randomizer.MainActivity}: java.lang.NullPointerException: Attempt to invoke virtual method ‘void android.widget.Button.setOnClickListener(android.view.View$OnClickListener)’ on a null object reference. I’m using Studio 4 (which looks totally different from Studio 3).

  • ahahhahaha no way i am getting error while build……and one more file named ids.xml keeps showing….what to do…. even there’s no error…i am getting green tick at top right corner..still my builds are showing error. app merge DebugResource has 3 errors….inside it there’s 1 failure in ids.xml file and two times its showing android resource compilation failed……… uhu what to do idk…….

  • Thanks for actually getting down on point. I see so many tutorials who go around in circles it makes my head spin. This is the clearest I was able to find, coding may not be easy but this should give beginners some insight to Android. I know some javascript, I hope with Android the “var” variables aren’t too different b/c it was hard to learn.

  • put this line of code instead : val rand = Random().nextInt(seekBar.progress + 1) Because if you chose the very first instance on the seekbar and click on roll the app will crash, I think it’s because the Rand() from java creates a random number between 0 and some other number, so if you choose the first instance it will try to create a number between 0 and -1 wich will result in an app crash

  • you went too far ahead too quick, and you didn’t select which temple or layout, this was soo frustrating, it seems many of these articles are geared toward people who already have an understanding of android studio..I have knowledge of visual basic, but I wanted to start building apps for Android phones so I chose your article based on the title, I keep getting the feeling that many of these beginner articles are more about showing how proficient you are with android studio than actually teaching someone who is very new to it.

  • Is there a way to capture on screen images in android and importing the screen resolution along with its Geolocation on the said screen. This makes the buttons perfectly situated in the correct places that I just captured. Makes this part self automated or manual depending.   • You shared your info with us… Now about the voice… Since ppl are teasing I’ll say it… You’re obviously a hugely successful person with this one quirk so you can handle it! Lol. You could leave it as is and be fine your whole life, but if you want to find your natural speaking voice you can because this isn’t physical, you’re not using your voice properly. Your real voice is lower. You can find your natural speaking pitch by singing la until you’re as low as you can go and then there’s some rule… I can’t remember exactly but close enough…From that lowest note, you go up like 5 half steps or something. So like do re mi fa so. And then talk…that’s your natural speaking pitch. Practice and you’ll speak there more often. It will sound more pleasant and confident. And most importantly, it’s healthier for your voice to avoid wear and tear so as not to get nodes etc. Thanks for sharing with us! Sorry if this sounds rude!

  • I tried to recreate this using Java and had a weird issue where the random number would come back as java.util.Random@xxx ; where xxx would be some random address, I’d get errors trying to cast or convert that into a string to display in the TextView… my solution that worked is as follows, I don’t know if there’s a better way to do this, using java? Also if I put the seekBar at zero the entire thing falls over and is killed by Android OS.   • Hi there. Beginner here. Any chance you want to include an “SOS” section in your text stuff attached to this article. For instance, when your beginner’s fingers begin to accidentally close things and you have to start from scratch because “going back” isn’t a back button like everything else is on the web.
