How To Elongate A Jeans Shirt?

This tutorial demonstrates how to stretch fabric on the edges of a shirt, starting with each sleeve and pulling outwards along the top line, collar, hem, and sides. The goal is to create a custom fit for any dress or blouse. The video also shows how to make blouses bigger by inserting fabric on the side of the blouse.

To alter the length of a blouse, locate the center back of the hem and measure your body along the side seam to determine the desired length. Extend the blouse front, back, and placket bands or facings to accommodate the needed increase. If the blouse is too long, consider adjusting the width to achieve a more comfortable fit.

To add fabric to a shirt to make it bigger, use 1/4 yard of knit fabric similar to the original tshirt in weight, HeatnBond Soft Stretch Lite Tape, and Ballpoint. To alter shoulders on a blouse, create a tube loop of fabric to attach to the bottom and cut a hem facing piece with a 1/2″ seam allowance on all sides and above the original seam line.

To lengthen the fabric, wet it in warm water and then lay or stretch it on a flat surface to dry. If the fabric is still too tight, gently tug on the jean legs until they reach the desired length. This tutorial also shows how to lengthen a pattern piece, such as the Vali Dress, which can be used as an example.

  • I have a daughter who was very, very tall and very thin when she was young. She would grow too tall for her jeans long before she outgrew them width-wise. I used to do the same thing to pants so she could continue to use them. Sometimes I put a print fabric insert she liked between tthe leg and bottom hem piece. It was a great money saver, and her pants fit her well.
