Dyeing fabric is a great way to bring a “pretty good” item closer to perfection. It is an art as much as a science, so don’t hesitate to experiment with different colors. For example, combining liquid dyes can create custom colors, or submerging different sections for varying amounts of time can create watercolor or ombre looks.
Note that natural fibers like cotton, linen, silk, and wool take dye better than synthetics, unless a dye is formulated specifically for synthetics. Additionally, you never know exactly how a material will take a color, as trim and stitching can take color differently than the base fabric.
Dyeing is a great way to revive old, faded fabrics, but it won’t remove or cover stains. To prepare your work station, wash your fabric item, mix colors, thoroughly wet the fabric, immerse it in a dye bath, remove the fabric from the dye, and wash your items.

White jeans can be a stylish addition to your wardrobe, but their stark whiteness can be a bit harsh on the eyes. To tone them down, you can use tea bags for a natural dye or buy cream-colored fabric dye. Spending an afternoon dyeing your jeans can add warmth and color. Cotton material is the best to absorb dye and hold color better. Check the tag of your jeans to ensure they are at least 95 cotton. Some may have a cotton polyester blend, but it’s generally fine as long as it’s mostly cotton.

Men’s Stylist Michael Giordano suggests a pragmatic approach to washing jeans, soaking them in hot water and using eco-friendly detergent and sun drying. Avoid using scalding-hot water and bleach, as dryers can bake in stains. Sunshine has a mild bleaching effect and is a pleasant scent. Spot clean stains correctly, using rubbing alcohol for ink blots, seltzer for wine, or hydrogen peroxide for home use. For coffee, food, and grass stains, use bar soap, dish soap, or shampoo.
For light to heavier stains, use shampoo. Scrub with a sponge, cloth, or toothbrush, then let it sit for half an hour, then rinse in warm water and line dry. Spot clean stains as soon as possible, as every passing moment is an opportunity for stains to set.

I love the jacket and also the vest you made out of the blue jacket. Question for you: have you ever used a large tub to dye your garmets? Our washer has a drawer that you keep filled with detergent and I am not sure how to turn that off. I guess my question is have you done this in a tub and if yes how long do you leave the garment in the water/dye bath to soak? I not, I will just test it out myself. Thanks and now to look at some of your other articles.
