Being a Graphics designer myself, I knew almost most of these techniques and I apply them in my PPTs. The problem is, none of my colleagues understand the logic behind these tips whenever I recommend them to incorporate it in a slide 😁 Like they never get the idea why I want to keep so much empty space on the slide 😂
Love the simplicity of your article.. Your website is my go-to for Microsoft Office tutorials. The Design Ideas feature is the most common element I use in PowerPoint. I also use the Variants section to change the colors and create section breaks between slides to use different themes/variants within the same presentation. Rule of Thirds will take it to the next level.

Leila ur articles r extremely powerful and useful. I noticed that at 5:00 mins u said that the color of some objects of slide design can’t be changed. Well it can be changed by going to “selection pane”. In thr selection pane u ll find the object or shape, then by changing the shape color it can be changed.

It’s the Fibonacci numbers which lead to the Golden Ratio. The Golden Ratio is 1,618… which is not precisely the rule of third but close.
I always had teachers at school that would have endless black text on their slide. Multiple scentences per dot aka powerpoint, and it was boring oh my gosh! Now in college thry make better powerpoints but there is often a lot of thing wrong I cannot pay attention it’s to boring😫. Edit: I never put text on my slide only pictures (with black background so there is no white border yuck🤮) and a title maybe, sometimes something else if needed. And mostly fade transitiones, something very suttle. You know, the teachers wouldn’t have to speak I could just read the slide. Oh, and students are gonna write down the whole f’ing slide! People do that. If you speak eith pictures we learn a lot better and didn’t write a thing!
Practically all of the examples are overloaded with information still. Slides for speakers shouldn’t be fundamentally constructed like a storytelling devices, it’s not a website or a brochure. For a decent understanding of how to give good engaging lectures/presentations watch TED talks or lectures by any world class professor. They almost never use any text or diagrams. You are there to explain it with your words, by actually talking to people.
Super article. So useful. I notice you are using 2 cameras. I’d like you to think about that for a moment. On the main camera, you are talking to the viewer. You address the viewer as an individual, adopting a warm, relaxed, conversational tone. This is great. Person to camera PTC. But the second camera is catching you at an angle. You are no longer PTC. You are addressing someone else… and the viewer has become briefly an eavesdropper. There are good solid reasons why broadcast television keeps a clear separation between PTC and 2 cameras in an interview. Switching to an eavesdropping camera angle briefly fractures the intimate relationship you have established with the viewer. You’re not the only one to use this on YT. But I don’t think you would ever see 2 cameras used in broadcast television where the presenter (or newsreader) is direct addressing the viewer.
May I say something? Your tips are great, but I found myself making Sophie’s choice because I have to make educational slides for academic presentations. Normally, you would need lots of pictures and data to support things, and it is not easy to use very little words to get theories across, so even by cutting out absolutely unnecessary words or do intensive rephrasing, there are most likely still kinda lots of words. And also, we have very little time for the presentation, so how do we deal with that?
I have only recently found your website. It has already helped me improve my presentations. Over the last year or so I have had to present virtually on teleconferences and article calls. Do you have any tips on construction of presentations where the audience has their own copy when presenting on audio meetings for example, or when the article links are slow?
What makes these 5 tips so beneficial isn’t necessarily the tips themselves. The examples that illustrate the design idea accompanied by a clear and concise explanation of the reason why the tip makes a better designed slide. I was really pleased to discover recently that you can! Using the Selection pane (with your tip – ALT + F10) you can delete, change colour, and resize (some) elements!
Great training. I have been using 1 through 4, and learned 5, I did not about the rule. Looking forward to use it next time. Design ideas and MS PPT icons have been my “best secrets” for my slides. I got a lot of compliments and people think there is a lot of work on them when is actually Office working for you. Is because they look so nice and appealing to the eyes. Hello, I did not find a guide to my problem anywhere. The point is that I have a cell on sheet2 that changes based on name and date. The information inside is loaded from another table on sheet1. I can upload the information, but I would like the background color to change as well as the read value. In general, I don’t know how to set dynamic color change based on a cell.
