Can I cancel a 12 month gym contract?

Your gym should allow you to cancel your contract if you cannot afford monthly payments due to significant changes in circumstances, such as job loss or debt. Evidence of this must be provided to the gym. If you want to cancel early, you will typically have to pay the full cost of the contract. Some circumstances allow you to cancel without paying a fee, but you will likely need to give a notice period of 30 days. Check your contract for details on early cancellation fees.

What is an annual fee for a gym?

Clubs are implementing an annual fee, also known as a facility enhancement or capital reserve fee, to collect a preset amount for club improvements. This fee is a way to increase revenue without increasing dues and can vary based on the type of membership and whether it’s a single, couple, or family. The fee should be clearly stated and discussed as a positive at the membership sale, included in the membership contract, and agreed upon by the member.

Staff should also be fully aware of the fee and its uses, discussing it in staff meetings to answer member questions. Any disputes or questions about the fee are usually due to miscommunication rather than legality.
