The global population is growing rapidly, and if everyone consumed resources and generated waste like U.S. residents, we would need nearly five Earths to sustain it. Richer nations deplete more resources per capita than poorer ones. To calculate the Earth’s ecological footprint, take a free quiz using the United States as an example. The world’s seven billion people consume varying amounts of the planet’s resources, and the Footprint Calculator helps countries, cities, and individuals improve sustainability and well-being.
The report measures the Ecological Footprint and biocapacity to assess the impact of human activity on the planet and wildlife. It shows that humanity uses 1.6 Earths worth of resources and services every year, and this is unequally distributed among countries. To sustain our current lifestyles, using up more resources than we can afford, we would need the equivalent of 1.7 Earths. As of August 1, 2024, humanity is using nature 1.7 times faster than our planet’s biocapacity can regenerate, which is equivalent to using the resources of 1.7 Earths.
If everyone consumed as much as the average US citizen, four Earths would be needed to sustain them. If everyone lived like the average inhabitant of the world, we would need 1.7 Earths. More than 50% of humanity’s Ecological Footprint is composed of our carbon footprint, especially from the burning of fossil fuels.
To reduce our environmental impact, use the Footprint calculator to find out your biggest areas of resource consumption and learn how to tread more lightly on the Earth. By 2030, we will need almost three planets to sustain our ways of life, and globally, we would currently need 1.6 planets to meet our demand on nature, or 60 more than Earth can renew.

How many Earths does China need?
Humanity is using nature 1. 7 times faster than the planet’s biocapacity can regenerate, requiring 1. 7 Earths of resources. To calculate the number of Earths needed if everyone lived like the residents of a country, we need 5. 1 Earths if everyone lived like Americans. For example, the United States has an Ecological Footprint of 8. 1 gha per person, and Japan needs 5. 1 Earths to meet its residents’ demand on nature.
How many Earths would we need if everyone lived like an American?
The United States’ Ecological Footprint is 8. 1 gha per person in 2018, while the global biocapacity is 1. 6 gha per person. To meet the residents’ demand on nature, Japan needs 7. 8 gha per person, which is 4. 6 gha per person. The 2022 edition of the National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts produced these figures and data table. For more updated numbers, check out the 2023 edition, which stretches all the way to 2022, with the last three years being estimates. The latest numbers can be downloaded from the provided link.
How many Earths will we need in 2050?
Overshoot Day is a reminder that we need 1. 7 planets to sustain humanity without destroying nature. If we continue on our current trajectory, we would need three planets by 2050. Despite the idea of colonising new planets, there is no other capable of supporting Earth’s inhabitants within reasonable distance of our solar system. The only solution is to cut back, as our population was less than half as big in 1970 and average consumption levels were significantly lower.
To meet the Sustainable Development Goal of ending poverty, consumption in large parts of the world needs to increase. Returning to sustainability requires ending population growth and dramatically changing our lifestyle in overconsuming wealthy nations. This includes redesigning cities, downsizing homes, reducing meat and energy consumption, flying and driving less, and buying less stuff. Industry must also play a role by decarbonizing, reducing pollutants, and improving efficiency.
How many people can Earth comfortably sustain?
The International Union for the Scientific Study of Population recently held a debate on whether the world’s human carrying capacity can sustainably support a reasonable standard of living. The debate was initiated by Professor Stan Becker, who requested a background on the topic. Cohen reviewed 66 published estimates of Earth’s human carrying capacity, with 65 of them excluding one estimate. The earliest estimate was made by Antoni van Leeuwenhoek in 1679, who estimated that the world could support 13.
4 billion people. Estimates in the last half of the 20th century ranged from less than 1 billion to over 1, 000 billion. The debate aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the human carrying capacity on Earth.
What is the maximum population the Earth can sustain?
Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, inventor of the microscope, made an estimate in 1679 that the world could support 13. 4 billion people. Estimates in the last half of the 20th century ranged from less than 1 billion to over 1, 000 billion. However, not all estimates are accurate and may not correspond to the sustainable human population. They also vary over time and can be more political than scientific. Half of these estimates fall between 4 billion and 16 billion people.
Van den Bergh and Rietveld reviewed 94 “limits to world population” and found that the best point estimate is 7. 7 billion people, with lower and upper bounds based on current technology being 0. 65 billion and 98 billion people, respectively. “Given current technology”, however, is only one factor determining estimates.
How many earths are needed to provide resources and absorb our waste?
The current rate of resource utilization and waste absorption by humanity is estimated to require 1. 7 Earths to sustain, leading to an ecological deficit.
What is a human footprint?
The human footprint is a measure of the energy, resources, and products consumed by a person throughout their lifetime, including food consumption, fuel and water volumes, and waste mass. It includes the number of food pieces, fuel and water volumes, and waste mass. How many global acres do you need to support your lifestyle?
This lab aims to explore inequality in economic and consumption patterns between the rich and poor, focusing on lifestyle, consumption, and affluence. It will examine the sustainability of our own living and consuming habits by calculating our ecological footprint, considering ways to decrease consumption, and comparing our consumption to a hypothetical person in the developing world. To be ecologically sustainable, each person should consume no more than four acres of land, but the average American ecological footprint is eight times that amount.
Ecological and social problems are interconnected and mutually reinforcing, and we must consider ecology, economics, and sociology to create an economy that is both socially and ecologically sustainable. To calculate your ecological footprint, use the online Ecological Footprint Calculator or use household information to convert your footprint to hectares. With 1. 6 biologically productive hectares per person worldwide, if everyone used only 1. 6 hectares, we would be ecologically sustainable. Consuming more than 1. 6 hectares would require more planets to support the population, leading to unsustainability.
How long until Earth can sustain life?
Earth’s expected time of death is several billion years, but life on Earth will end sooner than that. The sun’s natural evolution will render Earth unlivable for most organisms in about 1. 3 billion years. Humans could potentially drive ourselves and other species to extinction within the next few centuries if climate change isn’t mitigated or nuclear war occurs. The ultimate curtain call for our planet is tied to the evolution of the sun.
How many Earths are needed to support the world?
The claim that if everyone consumed as much as the average US citizen, four Earths would be needed to sustain them is based on varying amounts of resources consumed by the world’s seven billion people. The lifestyle of a subsistence farmer and a wealthy city-dweller in a developed country requires more land, materials, and energy for food production, home and workplace construction, and transportation. Americans consume more on average than people from less developed countries.
The claim has been recurring on social media since 2012, when science writer Tim De Chant created an infographic illustrating the land requirements if seven billion people lived like the populations of nine selected countries from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates.
How many planet earths would be needed to support the lifestyle of an average UK citizen?
The average UK citizen is responsible for consuming the same amount of natural resources as the entire planet, necessitating the support of three planets to sustain their lifestyle.

Studies show that more educated people have less children than less educated people. To solve the population crisis, we need to introduce new forms of education to developing countries. You can observe that people in african countries have significantly more children than those in America or Europe. This is due to many factors but the main cause is ignorance (lack of education).
This kind of scenario is seen in one of my favorite tv shows, SeaQuest DSV. Due to burgeoning population growth, rising sea levels, and dwindling resources, Earth’s oceans have been colonized and humans now eat mostly sea-based foods like algae. If you don’t know what SeaQuest was about, it’s basically like Star Trek, but underwater.
There should be international laws for how many children you are allowed to have. Increasing the chances for our survival is paramount. If we say that on a global average, a person is allowed to have 1.2 children. Meaning that some are allowed to have only 1, some 2 and some even 3. That should be determined by different factors
When I was born way back in 1964 there was roughly 3.5 Billion people in the world and scientists were apparently already concerned that we were overpopulating. 50 years later, that number has doubled, I think we’re past the limit to how many people the world can sustain and approaching the point of no return fast.
Ummm if the climate gets warmer by a whopping 2 degrees the total acreage of agricultural land would increase as more stable and longer growing conditions would be introduced in higher latitudes offsetting at a minimum any lost or shortened growing climate in lower latitudes. Our planet has been 2 degrees warmer in the past and sustained a larger plant base during those periods.
If you think about it, in the last 200 years, technology and industry have reduced world poverty from 80% to 30%. If only population didn’t grow exponentially, likely we would have eliminated world poverty already, but we just can’t keep up with so many new people. So the reason of poverty is mainly people having too many kids around the globle.
The population explosion of the past 7 decades is due to the huge decline of warfare related deaths, a byproduct of the Nuclear Age. Cataclysmic events such as WW I (20 million) WW II (85 million) and even Soviet/Chinese Communism (The Holodomor and Great Leap Forward totaled at least 50 million) generally don’t happen because of the threat of nuclear war. Food production has greatly increased and people keep on fu%k!ng, so the population has exploded. Lack of fresh water is the only thing holding our numbers from growing out of control.
Within 20 years it will double. Pretty much every human has kids. Almost. It took human kind 200,000 years to get 1 billion humans. And only 200 more years more to get 7 billion. So think about that! The more billion the easier it will be to get more billions bc everyone has kids. It can only go up from here and it won’t take 200 more years to do that.
Overpopulation is only a problem if we suffer from scientific stagnation or our environment is getting destroyed. Both might be true but I don’t want to be too pessimistic about population limits. The Earth could probably feed a lot more people if we turned desert into farmland, made fresh water from salt water, started subterranean farming or farmed on the rooftops and insides of great buildings. The Earth as it is and our, to say the least, massive crop yields can already sustain many more times animals than people. People, generally speaking, produce more than they consume. More people is good, I think. I’d get real worried if some kind of one-child policy would get widely implemented because I think it’s a horrific practice and it would inevitably lead to less economic growth and a lot of old people very soon. I’d choose humans over nature a hundred times over and I definitely think we could find a solution to this “problem”. Nature can be cruel. Of course, humans can be too… but at least we’re trying to better ourselves and we ARE getting better. We’ve stopped implementing slavery and I believe we will soon stop wars and a long time thereafter we may have global vegetarianism and universal healthcare in every country on the Earth; or at least, if we eat animals, their conditions will be better. There is nothing in this world that could stop us but ourselves and everything in this world is ours for the taking. We, along with the other intelligent beings of the universe, will inherit everything and one day we will repay life and the cosmos by artificially stopping the expansion of space-time and the galaxies and stars will be moved to closer proximity.
How many people can the earth hold 8 billion people . Which we basically already have . An don’t forget everyone already don’t have enough water or clean water and or food . Car accidents, city homicides, air pollution, rising rents and inflation from supply and demand of economics are just and example of what piece of the pie we get when thinking we can grow forever and just remember the more people the more of the things I just mentioned .small populations tend to be the happiest I mean look at Finland or maybe Denmark. global wars between country are just a sign of overpopulation and increased hostilities
I’m about to show my ignorance, I think: but I really want to know: how do deaths in global violence (wars, famine…), national violence (criminal activity – police abuse, violent crimes committed, domestic violence, vehicular, occupational…); also there’s the ‘boomer generation’ – yes they’re living longer, but they are going to die eventually; how can these NOT offset the population explosion anticipated within a few decades? Millions of people die daily. If I’m understanding correctly, it appears that people blast out babies in litters of 1 to 8 children faster than people can die; is this accurate? Please enlighten me because I really don’t get how this happens with as much murder, war, famine, disease, and just plain getting old that we engage in. Thank you.
We have to take into consideration all of the wasted food (931 million metric tons), and also the eating habits we all have if things are broken down and we all eat the same nutritious mush I believe that the world could have a high capacity, but we would have to change our consumption, like our phones, TVs, cars, gaming consoles, and many many other products that have an early expiry dates. It will be hard but it is possible now we all have to take initiative read about gardening plant something easy (tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, etc etc)

Don’t have 6 kids in your life time, the average African mother breeds 6-8 per kids and that’s why Africa is basically starving to death, to keep earth the same population having only 2 kids will make life sustainable as long as earth lives and human population will always stay the same no matter what but if all countries have one kid per family then human population will eventually go instinct just think about it, it’s just my hypothesis.
The sad part is.. this is actually a very serious problem and unless some catastrophic event happens (god forbid) that reduces the amount of people on earth. The population will continue to increase and increase faster by the year. Meaning we will absolutely exhaust this earth of all its resources. All the farms and wooded areas where I live have been turned into highways or apt buildings its really sad to see this happening and it will not slow down.
Problem of less land to grow crop. Same problem humans faced while living in urban cities. So, they changes to buildings than have bungalows. So, On same piece of land. Height is unlimited till moon. So, Unlimited people can live. On same pieces of land. Same can go for agriculture, make building farming just like terrace farming. And, the Research and Development should be such that, “Plastic” is used or something transperent. Which can hold Soil and crops as well as allow sunlight to pass through it. And, If it can’t, we can use Mirrors to make Things bright for the ground floor crop. And, Photons of Light will definitely move through mirror to leaves and help photosynthesis. Some, Some Nice Minds we want who can find problems and then who can dream and nice minds who can implement by entrepreneurship feelings. And, Make the World more sustainable by using concepts which we already know and see, but, have forgot to use everywhere, wherever required. * You know, Formulas are same for every thing and every aspect of life. Except for some exceptional cases. (Like Nobel gases of chemistry chart 🤦). Who act differently than others even under same situations.
1) More Food. Soil quality decreases. So R&D, think land as a Hen, If you just take Eggs it will become weak. You need to give it proper food. But, apart from food if you give it love and nice peaceful and plenty of resources like water,Sunlight, place to fight with other hens, etc then, it will grow old with Love, so will the quality of his health increases. So will the quality of eggs. And, Land is like Money, unless you work on increasing it, with time and inflation it will decrease. So, proper Organic Ancient Farming needs to be done, not matter it’s slow and low yield, but sustainable for lakhs of years and land would also feel happy to give growth to veggies and food on it. 2) Global Warming, Buddy it’s solve by electric cars and less use of fossil fuels due to unavailability. In some billion years in future, the fossil fuels quantity may increase and would be used and could make the plant very red warm. But, that time is amazingly far. Today, Think of electric car and Solar Panels and Wind energy and Tidal Energy and Piezo electricity and geo thermal or any new technology. And, We have AC current technology by our side.. to transport the electricity made to very long distances without losing it in resistance. So, It’s a nice future ahead 👍. Don’t worry so much. I am sure you don’t. Anything else, it’s already solved. Find out yourself
Population is growing in India rapidly, India thinks, population is a great assists for their economy, that will lead them to be a superpower and richest country in the world. At this time 350 millions Indians are homeless, they don’t have legal addresses, they live in tents, sheds or sidewalks. By the end of this century, Indian population will grow up-to 25% of the world population.
Population increase growth is the big problem especially in the third world You didn’t mention that land needed to grow food needed of in the opposites inverse direction to population growth so eight million will need more farmland five million but that extra three million will take up living space for homes roads and the thousands of different facility’s in the yellow pages like shops schools hospitals workplaces entertainment the list is endless do they will cement over what used to be farmland so the eight million who need more farmland have less farmland than the five million had when it wasn’t built over the exact opposite to what you want the worst of all worlds
So much wasted land in mountainous countries. They would have to work out a way of using that land effectively. South island of New Zealand for example is practically all mountains. No body lives on them and no livestock or crops on them either. When you think about all the over crowding in some cities..
He mentions how if this 3,000,000,000 people took on the lifestyle of an American. The only thing is that America makes way to much food, so we don’t eat all of it. I believe that America could sustain 2x it’s population based off of wasted food alone, supermarkets throw away so much food that is expired
How many? 1 000 000 000 no more, maybe less. Why? Because of quality of life. Next. If you want to have a children – you have to prove that you are not stupid, you arent addicted to drugs or other sht, and you have to be mentally stable. But thats is not gonna happen. 30 billionaires own 70% of world money. That means over 1 000 000 000 lives in worse condition than you, reader.
We have children & either don’t even think about it or just say the poor child is an accident. Which ever the case having sex has become a game &/or Expected. In today’s times, you’d think more people would use some common sense, but use less!!! We are Way over the quota Now!!!!! So now it’s God time to stop all the insanity & careless attitudes!!!!!!
No worries…. nature will eventually and rather ruthlessly execute a correction which will result in a massive die-off of newborns, elderly, people with compromised immune systems and the like. Third world countries will probably be hit the hardest. This will very likely also include land/ocean wildlife and vegetation as well.
Well, we could start by asking how many people are living at or near to a level of starvation right now. Our future ability to grow crops at the required scale looks to be in trouble. scientificamerican.com/article/only-60-years-of-farming-left-if-soil-degradation-continues/ Plummeting insect numbers, especially pollinators nationalgeographic.co.uk/environment/2019/02/why-insect-populations-are-plummeting-and-why-it-matters Plus all the issues brought on as a result of climate change. I’m guessing we’ve already run out of room.
The population is not growing exponentially. It is growing linearly. Estimates with current birth rate and life expectancy put us on a target of 11 billion which will then stabilize and grow only with increased life expectancy as living standards raise and access and adoption of contraception becomes a worldwide norm.
I think that it’s not just about maintaining the global population at ecologically sustainable numbers. I think that ever since a certain point in history, the reason for all of this inescapable matrix of civilization, IS human population (kinda, at all) we don’t just need to prevent some people. We need to prevent 99% of people.
The earth can hold like 1 trilion humans, cause consider how intense the water pressure is from the bottom of the ocean which has a maximum depht of 971 km,how much pressure is that?,earth can still handle all those pressure and consider the weight of the earths crust?thats a lot of mega mountains to carry,+the high intense pressure of the ocean and water weight
