What are the benefits of leadership skills in children?

Empowering youth to be leaders can boost their self-confidence, motivation, and sense of control. It helps them recognize their needs and speak up, plan, problem-solve, and implement solutions. By believing in their perspective, they are motivated to advocate for their personal needs and address school, club, and community issues. Additionally, teaching them essential employability skills, such as communication, collaboration, and problem-solving within a group, prepares them for life after high school and their career path.

There are three types of leadership: self-aware, collaborative, and visionary. Boys and Girls Clubs teach tweens and teens about leadership through programs that develop interpersonal skills and help them recognize their interests and issues. With these skills, young people feel empowered to start afterschool clubs, become advocates, and lead community projects. Overall, empowering youth to be leaders can lead to increased self-confidence, better employability, and a better future in the workforce.

What is the role of leadership in early childhood education?

In an Early Childhood Education (ECE) setting, leadership is a multifaceted role that involves not only being an agent of change but also a follower. The leader plays a crucial role in the pursuit of organizational goals, providing the vision, organizational structures, and resources that the team uses to work together for the success and sustainability of the organization.

The Super 4Cs of Critical thinking and problem solving, Collaboration, Creativity and innovation, and Communication are essential for leading people in an ECE setting. These principles include Positive Interdependence, Individual Accountability, Equal Participation, Group Processing, and Simultaneous Interaction.

Positive Interdependence emphasizes the importance of working closely together, allowing participants to achieve their personal goals if and only if the other team members also reach their goals. Individual Accountability requires that each team member feels they have a sense of individual responsibility for the performance of tasks and achievement of common goals. Each member in the ECE setting feels that they have a responsibility to contribute to the task assigned to the team because they have something valuable that they can offer.

Equal Participation ensures that each team member assumes an equal share of the tasks that need to be completed in the ECE setting. The leader must ensure that equal opportunity is provided to the members and that each member makes a contribution according to their personal best. This way, the team’s goal is achieved through promotive interaction among all members of the ECE team.

Simultaneous Interaction involves ensuring that team members engage in interpersonal and group interactions, get to know each member of the team, develop trust for each member of the team, actively listen to each member of the team, communicate clearly and accurately, take turns, state ideas freely, accept responsibility to contribute and for what each member contributes, provide constructive criticism to other members of the team, share tasks, engage in democratic decision making, be sensitive to team members’ different perspectives, clarify differences, accept and support each other, avoid conflict, and resolve conflict constructively if it occurs.

As a policy designer, the leader must come up with the vision for the big picture for the ECE and creatively influence children and staff in ECE to engage positively in the learning, teaching, educating, and growing up that take place during ECE. Designers are able to critique their creations, reflect on how their present designs meet client demand, and plot a different course or come up with an entirely new design to maintain relevance to the clients.

As a pedagogy creator, the leader must come up with insights that lead to the generation of new ways of teaching, learning, assessment, and curriculum development so as to develop “best practice pedagogy”. This role involves developing or advocating child-friendly strategies that maximize both Vygotskyian social constructivist strategies and Siemen’s connectivist strategies, considering the children’s interests as the prime factor in creating pedagogy for ECE.

In conclusion, leadership in an ECE setting requires a combination of leadership, policy design, pedagogy creation, and policy design. By fostering a supportive environment, promoting critical thinking, and fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation, leaders can contribute to the overall success and sustainability of the organization.
