How Did People Show Their Ingenuity And Individuality?

This blog post explores the topic of creativity and self-expression, focusing on the psychological and emotional benefits of creative expression. It highlights the influence of social media on identity and how it can enable Gen Z (18-24 year olds) to develop a new form of self-expression. By recognizing one’s unique perspective, exploring various art forms, and trusting their creative process, individuals can cultivate an artistic voice that truly reflects their authentic self.

Creativity is essential for a well-lived life, and it is seen as a healthy, productive way to process emotions such as grief, confusion, and joy. Through creative forms like art, music, or writing, individuals can channel their emotions and promote connection and understanding. By sharing their thoughts and perspectives, they can bridge gaps in communication and create connections with others.

There are numerous ways to express creativity, including writing, playing around with AI, becoming a songwriter, doing art, fashion, and thrifting. Working on a creative project is like a moving meditation, as it releases the happy hormone dopamine into the system. Self-expression is defined as expressing one’s thoughts and feelings through words, choices, or actions. Engaging in creative activities opens up room for self-expression, and if creativity is stifled, it can feel restricting.

Fashion is another way to express one’s inner self, as people use their fashion sense to announce who they are and what they like. With the advent of Web 2.0 and social media, the world has become richer for people to express themselves and share their creations.

How to do creative expression?

Creative expression is a powerful way to explore and express emotions and experiences, as it helps build new neural pathways and celebrate progress. It can be a rewarding and liberating experience, as trauma and the brain and body are connected. Some survivors of childhood sexual abuse may feel like the safest and purest way to communicate their emotions, while others may feel inadequacy. Regardless, allowing oneself the freedom to creatively explore and express feelings can be intensely rewarding.

One of the first classes a survivor participates in at the Saprea Retreat is kintsugi, a Japanese art-form where a broken piece of pottery or glass is pieced back together using a sparkling, strong gold resin. This creative project becomes symbolic, representing their healing journey. Creative expression can become a symbol of one’s own healing journey, a celebration of strength, or the outlet through which healing can be found, one expression at a time.

In summary, creative expression is a powerful and liberating way to explore and express emotions and experiences, especially for those who have experienced childhood sexual abuse.

  • I’m actually the type of person to “copy” people from the media, thinking it’ll get me somewhere but it didn’t at all. Thank you for doing this article, I needed a little help on trying to fit in a bit. But I’m still unsure if I should keep trying to “copy” others that inspire me, or not… Because to my friends and family, it’s not ME. But I don’t know what I really am.. And I don’t want them to tell me what I am, because then that’s kind of the same thing. “Be yourself”, how can I be? Should I just reach toward my passions? And how can I become a good and like able person without copying someone from Vine or Youtube..? I’m just in my second year of high school and it’s just one more thing to add to my list of stressors.

  • I had a thought. when you were talking about how the best artists steel and hide their sources, i knew what you meant because i paint. the way that i think of it is that information comes in through the sense of sight, is processed by the mind and then the unique processed information is then expelled through the hands as visual art

  • I would like to share what wappends to me. When I’m in a group of 3-4 persons talking, there’s always one who is very talkative, who wants to be the center of attention and has high skills when comunicating. In this, I put in myself in spectator mode, and my self-conscience or ego is diminished, I’m overwhelmed and I start to talk less andf less. Later I feel bad about it. On the other hand when I’m talking to a person with the same energy level than me, and introvert like me, the conversation flows good and the tempos are 50-50%. How could I fix it?.

  • Hey guys and Leo. So I didn’t get my answer and I know why, See my problem is when I’m lets say expressing myself, talking to a person or a punch of people or arguing, I’m saying things that I want or I say the completely wrong thing that I didn’t want to say. But like 5 minutes later I think that, “wow I should’ve said this because this is much so much clealer and better. That’s the thing I would have wanted say in the first place and I always wish I could correct myself, but its already too late. I want to say the best things immediately (don’t know if this is right word for it, english is not my mother tounge), I don’t want to think that: “Wow I could have said it much better”, it really pisses me off :D, I can’t understand what’s the problem. Does anyone have any opinions, please?

  • I feel like I lost my sense of self and style. I was very witty and different, but I always been afraid of what people may think and how they will neglect me, so I never expressed myself. Now I don’t know what I like and what I represent. I became a people pleaser and copied their “style” to feel approved. I want to find myself and find my life style. Does someone know how find my old self.

  • The musician example really resonates with me. Because one of the biggest things I’ve ever wanted to do was just write songs and sing folk or rock music. But I always find myself trying to emulate my favorite singers and my inspirations. I’ve really been trying to find my voice recently and this really gives me more hope that I will.

  • Thank u so much. I’ve always had trouble understanding “who” I should be. I’m glad I came across your website. At first I was reluctant to absorb anything you say because I came from a life of strict limiting beliefs. But when I watched your articles over and over (it’s been almost a year of self-actualizing) I was able to understand more and more. Thank u again!

  • the voice i have when i speak is often very high pitch, especially when i give a presentation, to me this kind of voice spells insecurity. Which then makes me dream of having a deeper voice, to me its a voice of security and passion about your topic of conversation. I have trouble finding models to evaluate different styles, wish it could be simple to practice voice interpretations.

  • Leo, Please do a lecture on How to Speak in Camera. I am very confident speaking to large crowds because I can engage them and it’s a transference of energy from both sides, but when it comes to the camera, I am a pussy. Help please! I have seen many articles on youtube regarding how to do it but I actually Listen to you more, I mean I follow your advice seriously. Thanks my friend!

  • Hey Actualized.org, I have a problem with how I feel about myself, I have a very low self esteem due to myself not thinking that I am not good enough. Its not really that I have communication problems but more self image issues. I always feel like I have messed up sometime during a relationship which drive us apart, us being the other person and myself. I haven’t really had the courage to walk up to a girl in a club and talk to her, cause like I said before, I don’t really feel good enough about myself to bring it upon others. I have been perusal you articles, and wow! These articles really do a lot. Although I still can’t incorporate these points into my life. I had lived with my mother for most of my life, cause my dad left us on the day I was born and died when I was twelve, so I do not know if that has any effect on my self esteem? How would I be able to find myself?? Cause I am quite lost to who I am…

  • i think when you copy you still add yourself into the piece. you need to start from something to make it yours. you can’t start from nothing. you are still to some extent using the tools others used. and you can combine and collect all things you love and make it all yours and that will be your “style”

  • what if someone took your style, someone who had the same mindset and grew up in a similar environment, so same self and ego. I had the same vision of style but i didnt believe in it at first because i listened to people around me. Now this guy is making bank and i cant be known as the 2nd guy like him… i became neurotic and lost my sense of self and went against my instinct. how do pick up where i left off

  • I totally realize I have been hiding my self expression because I have been spending so much time trying to not be myself and change how people percieve me… However I realize every environment I get to ppl always see the real me and I can’t hide who I am… I have to be me and express that and learn to adopt obliviousness(confidence) & be real with myself in the face of criticism and stop being so sensitive so that I can enjoy life, adopt playful competitiveness and win❤

  • Thank you so so so much man, i’ve been wondering so long what my goal in life was, i’ve always been busy with mental education but never felt free with it, it was always another mind game for me, always wanting to be like the gurus like you said just coping other people. Now with this information i finaly feel free after so many years! the freedom to feel what i should feel in all the situations! Thanks man, i have been dancing all day allrady XD
