Prozac is a commonly prescribed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) medication for adults and children, helping to improve mood and treat various mental health conditions. It is used to treat depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and other mental health issues. However, it is important to note that a child who is breastfed by someone taking Prozac may be exposed to the drug, which can cause side effects such as agitation, irritability, and agitation.
Fluoxetine is commonly used for conditions like depression, panic disorder, OCD, and bulimia. Children should not make any changes to their prescribed dosage unless their doctor recommends doing so. Prozac is approved for treating OCD in children, but it is important to inform the care team about any conditions such as bipolar disorder or a family history of bipolar disorder.
Common side effects of Prozac include changes in appetite and sleep, headaches, and stomach upset, which typically lessen as kids get used to their new routine. Antidepressants are often effective in treating depression and anxiety in children and teenagers, but there are some risks associated with them. Parents of children suffering from mental illness should consult their doctor or seek medical help if any side effects bother their child or do not go away.
Surveys have raised concerns that antidepressants may raise the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, but not deaths. Sertraline and fluoxetine (Prozac) were consistently found to be more effective than placebo for treating OCD. Doctors may recommend several different SSRI medications as their first choice for a depressed child, with fluoxetine being the most common.
📹 3 Things To Know Before Using Prozac (Fluoxetine)
In this episode, I discuss a medication known as Prozac (fluoxetine) and go over three things that you should know before taking …
What is the dark side of fluoxetine?
Fluoxetine, a medication used to improve mood and energy levels, may cause side effects like agitation, abnormal heartbeat, and confusion. Serious side effects include suicidal thoughts, insomnia, and anorexia. Prozac, a benzodiazepine, is prescribed for major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, bulimia, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, binge eating disorder, and bipolar depression. While some people take Prozac for anxiety, the FDA has not approved off-label use. Doctors also prescribe it for treatment-resistant depression in combination with olanzapine (Zyprexa).
Does Prozac have a bad reputation?
Prozac, with a rating of 7. 2 out of 10 based on 1, 206 reviews on Drugs. com, has been reported to have a positive effect by 65 reviewers, while 20 have indicated a negative experience.
Why does Prozac have a bad reputation?
A study published last year found that some commonly prescribed antidepressants, including Prozac, Cymbalta, Zoloft, and Wellbutrin, promoted bacterial resistance to antibiotics. The mechanism for this effect is complex, but the study attracted attention. The lead author of the antidepressant antibiotic resistance paper warned against stopping antidepressants due to this research. Antibiotic resistance is a serious medical problem, and the study raises concerns about long-term antidepressant administration.
There is a constant barrage of studies and media reports warning us about antidepressants, even the newest ones like ketamine. In February, a 65-year-old person with a history of chronic depression reported frightening adverse experiences with ketamine treatment. The study raises an important concern about the safety of antidepressants and the potential for antibiotic resistance.
Can Prozac make you not care about anything?
Emotional blunting, a potential side effect of antidepressants, is reported by around half of people taking them. The persistence and magnitude of this blunting varies from person to person, with some experiencing it as a temporary improvement, while others have it as an enduring side effect. It’s difficult to determine the extent of antidepressants’ contribution to emotional blunting compared to depression itself, as emotional responses broaden as depression lifts. Various strategies can help alleviate emotional blunting.
Does Prozac affect studying?
A study tested if fluoxetine’s adverse effects on memory processes could be reversed after discontinuation. Results showed that learning and short-term memories were unaffected by repeated fluoxetine treatment. However, long-term memory at 24 hours was impaired in OLM and NOR tasks. The study also found that the adverse effects of fluoxetine on memory processes could be reversed after discontinuation.
What are the negative side effects of Prozac in children?
Prozac is a commonly prescribed medication for children and teens with major depressive disorder (MDD) and sometimes bipolar disorder. It is often prescribed for adults, but is also approved for children aged 8 and older. Warning signs include increased sadness, isolation, panic attacks, and aggressiveness, which may lead to thoughts of suicide or self-injury. Common side effects include changes in appetite, sleep, headaches, and stomach upset, which typically lessen as kids get used to their medication.
It is important to watch children and adolescents for signs of serious side effects, such as worsening mood and behavior. Prozac is not recommended for every child with depression, but can be part of a successful treatment plan for some.
Does Prozac cause lack of focus?
The use of fluoxetine may affect the ability to engage in activities that require concentration, such as driving, cycling, and operating machinery. It may be advisable to refrain from these activities for the initial few days to ascertain their effects or until they abate. Nevertheless, the majority of individuals are able to operate motor vehicles in a typical manner while taking fluoxetine.
Does Prozac cause lack of motivation?
Antidepressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), can help alleviate the constant feelings of dread, despair, hopelessness, and sadness associated with depression. However, they can also lead to emotional blunting, causing individuals to feel “flat” and unmotivated. This sensation is a significant concern for those starting antidepressant medication and an obstacle to continuing a prescription. Depression is the leading cause of disability for Americans aged 15 to 44, impacting approximately 6.
7 of all adults. Persistent depressive disorder (PDD) affects an estimated 1. 5 of American adults. Understanding the causes and likelihood of this flat sensation is crucial for those taking antidepressants.
Does Prozac affect learning?
The study found no consistent effects of fluoxetine on cortical excitability, which does not support the hypothesis that fluoxetine can enhance learning in humans. Visual perceptual learning (VPL) is an established model of adult human brain plasticity that involves improved visual task performance with training. VPL can be highly specific to the trained stimulus configuration, involving neural populations in visual areas such as V1, V2, V4, and the middle temporal area (MT) that are tightly tuned to orientation, retinal location, and motion direction.
The involvement of the primary and extrastriate visual cortex in VPL has been supported by primate neurophysiology, human neuroimaging studies, and neuromodulation and fMRI studies in humans. However, transfer of learning to untrained stimuli and tasks can occur, indicating that higher-level decision-making areas are also involved in VPL. Primate neurophysiological data have revealed learning-induced changes within the decision-making area LIP (lateral intraparietal sulcus) but not in MT following motion discrimination VPL.
Some current VPL models propose changes at more than one stage of visual processing or type of stimulus representation. For example, Watanabe and Sasaki suggest that perceptual learning of a trained task involves changes in the representation of stimulus features, possibly within visual cortex, as well as changes in task-specific visual processing that may involve decision-making areas.
Visual perceptual learning has been used as a model to investigate the effects of neuromodulatory interventions on adult brain plasticity. Interventions that enhance VPL include transcranial random noise stimulation and the administration of donepezil to increase the synaptic concentration of acetylcholine. Enhanced VPL was also found in patients with increased glutamatergic transmission due to Huntington’s disease. These studies demonstrate that altered cortical function can enhance VPL.
Can Prozac affect empathy?
A study published in the journal Translational Psychiatry has revealed that antidepressant treatment can lead to impaired empathy regarding the perception of pain, not just the state of depression itself. The research, led by interdisciplinary researchers from the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna, involved unmedicated patients with acute depression who were tested on their empathic responses to the pain of others twice. The patients underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while watching videos of people undergoing painful medical procedures.
Their brain activity and self-reported empathy were compared to those of a group of healthy controls. Before treatment, patients and controls responded similarly. After three months of antidepressant treatment, the research revealed relevant differences: patients reported lower levels of empathy and reduced brain activation in areas previously associated with empathy. The findings suggest that antidepressant treatment may not only impair empathy but also affect the overall functioning of the brain.
Can Prozac make you apathetic?
SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are commonly prescribed medications for treating depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. However, they also come with a range of side effects, including a rare but potentially dangerous condition called “emotional blunting” or “apathy”. Emotional blunting is a feeling of being overwhelmed by the sensation of being overwhelmed by the sensation of being overwhelmed. It can be triggered by various factors, such as stress, anxiety, or a lack of sleep. It is important to recognize and manage emotional blunting to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
📹 Effects of SSRI Medications on Kid’s Brain
Welcome to Episode 105 of our podcast! In this episode, we delve into a crucial topic that concerns many parents and caregivers: …
The first two days I was on 20mg of prozac, I felt energized in a way I had never felt in my entire life. But by day 3, I began to have intense headaches which got worse over time. I read an article in which one researcher for the drug recommended starting with just 5mg doses as he felt 20mgs was too high for most people. This weel I will try to get compounded dose based only on a 2.5mg microdose and see how I go from there. I really want that superman feeling back as I believed I was capable of accomplishing things I procrastinated on or failed to follow through on.
Fluoxetine has defo helped me, I still get a bit of a anxiety now and again but it transformed me into normal, I feel more sociable, I can drink more. This medication is basically a spanner to fix your broken mind, for everyone out there take it if you’re depressed or got irritational thoughts, it’ll fix your mind, make life worth living if you know what I mean
Yeah whenever I first started and increased my fluoxetine, it would just be the worst two weeks. going from 20 to 40 right now and I feel like I did back before I took anything. It can really suck but I feel really decent when it reaches a stable point. If you are going through depression and struggle through your starting week, remember that even if for some reason it doesn’t work for you, you are making progress towards being happier.
It’s strange that the risk of suicide is high among young people and not among older people. The risks drop to zero after 25 years if I understood correctly? 😉 I have doubts about this, as I am 50 years old and felt suicidal after 3 weeks of treatment with fluoxetine. I had to stop it quickly. I was suffering a lot, counting the hours that passed, waiting to get better. It got scary.
I’m on Fluoxetine,I notice when I take it,that it makes me feel agitated with grumpy moody ways, my bones be sniff and slight headaches,I be in a daze it doesn’t work for me, I wing myself off of it,I realized it was just me in illusion. I don’t need this medicine. I just need to relax my brain. All medications have side effects some medicines are not meant to be taken.
I had anxiety attacks in the very beginning then when I started taking it hyperventilating anxiety attacks but I still get it once in a while and I feel like I’m in a deep stage of depression I keep trying to call my doctor and they keep saying they’ll call back but they never do I feel kind of embarrassed to keep going to them and I think probably I’m just a nervous wreck but they don’t understand that I have some minimal side effects like drowsiness
i was on 5mg prozac for decades for anxiety/panic/depression but when i lost mom and dad 4 months ago, my anxiety/depression/ptsd became intolerable and so we went to go up to 20mg and and stayed on it for 4 weeks but wasnt getting benefit for anxiety just depression and dr switched to pristiq 25mg and now anxiety is now even worse! I dont know what to do anymore…
A couple of weeks ago I stopped it again, because each time I take 10mg it feels as though it’s not enough, then I increase to 20mg, it affects my ears and I get bad chest pains, now being off of it I was in my room and looking at the pair of trousers on the couch, it seemed as though they were expanding! Wth is going on, I’ve also been so dizzy last few days that I feel like I’m gonna pass out.. I refuse to take anything for a while to see what happens, I’m tired of taking antidepressants that don’t work, so trying others constantly that my psychiatrist now doesn’t even know what to give me anymore, so she says keep trying fluoxetine or Cymbalta, these are the only two that did work for me yrs ago, but last time I took Cymbalta, I thought I was having a stroke, couldn’t even lift my feet up to walk! Take one meds to make you better but then they cause some other shit to happen..
Ok so here’s the thing, I first started on Prozac many years ago, from the first dose i statted feeling great! After a year on it, my ears started blocking and weird shit happening to my throat, was told to stop them.. My psychiatrist has tried every meds there are out there but for some reason my body is just not taking them well. She told me to go back to the meds that did help me in the past, which was prozac and Cymbalta, when i took Cymbalta about six months ago i had like a stroke like symptom two nights in a row, so we stopped them again.. Was on 10mg prozac which helps a bit, gone up to 20mg and now I’m getting chest pains and palpitations on 20mg, I’ve noticed this happening before and when i went down to 10mg the chest pain stopped, I don’t know why this happens, oh and i feel like I’m going blind whilst on it! Have no friken idea what to do anymore, does anyone else suffer chest pains on the 20mg?
I have a question. I have been on Auro-Velafaxine for years. Recently tgey switched manufactures to ACT-Venlaxaine. I am never fussy about generics very often only on certain medication‘s. Zopiclone and a few other ones. But I went into full withdrawal on this new effect or within 2 1/2 days. My pharmacist is telling me it’s all in my head because it is exactly the same just different fillers. II know what the literature says, but that is just not the case. It may be the same dose, but it is not the same effect. Have you ever had any patience with this issue when it comes to SSRIs?
Prozac ruined my life. It ravaged the lives of my friends, as well, once we compared notes. Don’t take it. I’m now 58 and if only I could turn back time to the day of that first prescription, I’d have burned it. Within 2 weeks, a latent mood disorder emerged that I know was Prozac related. It “switched on” something in my brain. From that day forward, I struggled with manic depression. Coincidentally, my friends had the exact same experience.
guys I live in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 I took for a 3 months Prozac after giving a birth og my baby but from 1st day I’m like zombie and my eyes not seeing good I went to the eye doctor he checked my eyes are good now I stopped using was 40mg then I did 20mg then 10mg then 5mg now stopped for a 4 days but still feeling like zombie and eyes not good and sometimes headaches and turning i feel like blind ghost sometimes saying myself do im living ? or I’m dead? .. please 1:53 1:53 someone help me when goes side effects from my body ? here doctors are not good they don’t even understanding what I mean 😢 1:53 1:53 1:53
My kid got caught sneaking out and she had sex with an 18 yr old, she is 13. I found out right away called the cops and took her to our local children’s hospital for a screening and to make sure she was not pregnant or had any stds. We are pressing charges. However while at the hospital I was told the legal age for consent in our state is 12. Which is disgusting and a min of 4 yr age difference. He is 5 years older so we can press charges. However at the hospital I was told I wasn’t allowed in the room to check on my daughter bc mind you she is mad at me that I called the cops and took her to the hospital. So now I am being punished and was not allowed in to check on my daughter after they did the testes. Eventually she said I could come in mind you she is still very upset they make her take a mental health survey and she indicates that she wanted to harm herself, that she had not but thought about it. She has NEVER attempted suicide. She is a 13 yr old who is now pissed off at her mom for calling the cops and making a “big deal” out of an 18 yr old having sex with a 13 year old. The hospital tells me because she ticked yes she has thought of self harm I now have no say with what to do with MY CHILD and she has to be sent to one of two state facilities in our county or I can send her further away but reguardless bc she is pissed rn I have to send her or I would get the cops called on me. Mind you I just called the cops and am the one who reported the entire situation of the 18 year old having sex with a 13 year old in the first place!
Your children should not be taking SSRI’s. If your doctor is pushing SSRI’s on your children tell them they are evil and wicked and immediately cease any and all funding of their practice. Quit giving your children garbage for food – meaning sugar, sodas, bread, cereal, candy, high fructose corn syrup, french fries, oils, treats, syrups, pancakes etc. Turn the TV off and put them outside without a phone so they can engage in life and do things. Doing things and engaging in life is how you cure the depression/anxiety issue, not garbage like SSRI’s that trash these beautiful children’s body chemistry.
Hi. I escaped UK back in January and now in Germany the doctors are theretening me with court if I say no to SSRI’s. And my son is gettig better without any medication but still on NG as afraid to open his mouth. I feel like the doctors between UK and Germany communicated and are trying to corner me again.
We r in London and I feel like if I don’t say yes to SSRI’s the hospital might bring court on me. Is common practice here. Right now I have 3 + weeks to think about the SSRI’s but I hate the idea of it. My son doesn’t want it either but it is being pushed on us just like on other kids here where parents are pressured into accepting it. For short time that is but still, I don’t want it. My son got anxious while being away from me in sommer, and developed fears.
My son 12, stopped eating back in sommer. He is on ng tube feeds and still afraid to open his mouth. The doctor wants him on fluoxetine but I don’t. He is under treatment in hospital with kids similar age. He also gets a good quality prebiotic I’m buying for him called Symprove but half the adult dose. Any advise? He is getting better but still afraid.
