The problems of rich kids are important because no child should be left behind, regardless of parental education or income. Minimizing the problems of rich kids is as ill-founded as accepting death by guns. Psychologists say there are real issues and hurdles for wealthy children, but many of the traits that created parental wealth, such as being goal-oriented and achievement-driven, pass down to kids.
For children raised by their biological parents, the correlation between parents’ wealth and a child’s eventual wealth was strong, calculated to be 0.33. Children were boiled and eaten up so fearful as to make one shudder despite heavy efforts from foreign humanitarian aid and the Qing authorities. The famine persisted as the death toll increased.
Rich folks don’t go to dinner with their babies and toddlers, and there may be reasons for poor kids not eating healthy, but this ain’t it. Parents can eat the leftovers as others said, rich or not. The diet within the Victorian era changed dramatically, and children typically ate what their parents gave them, so whatever was on the menu for the adults.
A new study published in Social Science and Medicine found that lower-income families are more likely to give up on attempts to feed their kids. Studies show that the more often families eat together, the less likely kids are to smoke, drink, do drugs, get depressed, develop eating disorders, and more.
The wealthy often financially sabotage their children, and when we can afford to pay for their children’s entire college education, we should prioritize health over eating together.

What did wealthy Victorians eat?
The Victorians, who were wealthy, enjoyed a variety of meals, including mutton, bacon, cheese, eggs, sugar, treacle, and jam. They often ate breakfast with ham, bacon, eggs, and bread, and fish was a popular dish near the sea. Victorian families with more money often ate a large breakfast, lighter lunch, afternoon tea, and evening meals with multiple courses. These meals were an opportunity to show off wealth, with spiced pastries and delicate sandwiches served to guests at afternoon tea.
A typical evening meal would have around four courses, and dinner parties could have up to nine courses, with elaborate table dressings and food sculptures. Servants spent days preparing these meals, showcasing their wealth and ability to afford expensive meat.
Do rich kids grow up to be rich?
Researchers in Sweden found a significant correlation between the rate at which Swedish children of wealthy biological parents and adopted Swedish children of wealthy parents were likely to become wealthy. Wealth is passed from one generation to the other through inheritance and gifts, and rich parents breed rich kids. However, there is more to the passing of wealth than inheritance. From the moment a child is born into a wealthy family, their parents’ spending habits determine if they will be in a high income bracket as an adult.
Rich families invest more on future-oriented purchases that ensure their wellbeing. Growing up with affluence also impacts the college major a wealthy student is likely to choose. For students with affluent backgrounds, the choice in college major tends to be in the humanities such as English, history, and the arts, while their lower-income peers seek majors in math, physics, and computer science.
Are rich families happier?
A new study reveals that life satisfaction is influenced by wealth rather than income. People with lower incomes, earning around $30, 000 or less, have an average life satisfaction rating of about 4, while those earning over $500, 000 rate their lives above 5. Multimillionaires, however, have an average life satisfaction rating closer to 6. The research raises the question of whether wealth has a different impact on happiness than income, as it may allow people to invest in themselves and their families, such as funding children’s college education or buying a bigger home in a better school district. However, top earners are not immune to financial stress, with one-third of people earning more than $150, 000 expressing concern about making ends meet.
How healthy were Victorian children?
In the 19th century, children lived in cramped, damp houses in overcrowded slums, where outbreaks of diseases were common. These diseases, such as scarlet fever, tuberculosis, typhus, and typhoid, were untreatable killers 150 years ago. Poor children were weak, malnourished, and unable to fight off illness.
In the early 19th century, there was little understanding of the cause or spread of disease, and doctors were expensive, untrained, and had little understanding of the human body. Common treatments included draining blood, going away for better air, or taking medicines that made people sick or rushed to the toilet. Tonics, pills, and potions were the cheapest treatments available to the poor.
As most treatments failed, many people from all walks of life died. The funeral trade became a big business in the 19th century, catering mostly to the rich. Undertakings helped arrange funerals for the wealthy, who wanted to display their wealth and grief. For the wealthy, extravagant funerals were in order, while for the poor, avoiding the shame of a pauper’s funeral was their major concern.
Was the Victorian diet healthy?
Victorians had a healthier diet than today due to consuming more nutrient-rich food and consuming less sugar and processed food. A typical breakfast consisted of stoneground bread smeared with dripping or lard, a healthy monounsaturated fat, and a large bunch of watercress, rich in vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. This diet was more beneficial for those not at the bottom of the heap.
What was the worst disease in Victorian times?
In Victorian times, infectious diseases were the primary cause of mortality, with smallpox, tuberculosis, and influenza being old scourges. In 1831, Britain experienced its first cholera epidemic, which was spread by contaminated water. The impact of cholera and public health campaigns led to the creation of local boards of health in 1848, enforcing regulations for clean water supplies and better drainage.
In the 1870s, legislation gave local authorities wider powers to combat insanitary urban living conditions. Queen Victoria’s portable medicine chest at Osborne House, Isle of Wight, included a range of remedies, including laudanum, a common Victorian painkiller used by both the rich and poor.
What did poor families eat in the Victorian era?
Tea was the staple drink, with coffee being consumed at breakfast in the form of chicory/coffee mixture. Breakfast was usually bread, occasionally with butter, and sandwiches of bread and watercress were common for the poorest. Porridge made with water was possible at the start of the week, and lunch involved bread, cheese, or more watercress. Street food lunches were common for all income groups, and late suppers of’savouries’ were regular treats for adults.
However, these nutritional strategies were viewed with suspicion by contemporary commentators due to their appearance and unappetizing taste, which were deemed unwholesome and unhygienic. The nutritional value of staples like watercress, onions, radishes, and cherries was not appreciated. This led to public health exhortations about the ‘unsuitable’ diet of the urban poor. From the 1880s on, endorsement was given to canned and processed milk, fruit, and meat products as ‘ideal’ for the consumption of the working-classes due to their perceived promotion in hygiene, nutritional value, and convenience. The late Victorian working-classes enjoyed the benefits of these foods and were reassured by the official insistence on their quality.
Does having rich parents help?
Growing up in a wealthy household can lead to several advantages, including better education, more resources, more time, formal education, and success peer pressure. Wealthy children often live in wealthier neighborhoods with better school systems, teachers, and educational resources. They also have more time to study, participate in school clubs, and build long-lasting relationships with their wealthy friends.
Furthermore, wealthy kids often attend expensive private schools that focus on preparing their students for college, leading to almost 100 of graduates from private high schools attending college. This “Herd Doctrine” has a powerful gravitational pull that directs the behavior of those within the “rich neighbourhood herd”. However, there are disadvantages to growing up rich that inhibit the pursuit and accumulation of wealth.
- Less willingness to take risks – Those raised in wealthy households have a lot to lose, making them more risk-averse than those raised in poverty.
- Inferior work ethic – Comfort can lead to complacency, as they have no choice but to work for their meals, school supplies, video games, and iPhones. This can lead to a hard work ethic, which is essential for success.
- Fear of failure – Growing up in a wealthy household, one may not fear poverty as much because it is something they are familiar with and survived. This fear of failure can hold them back from pursuing their dreams because such pursuits could fail.
- Uncomfortable with failure – Those raised in wealthy households have many safety nets that come to the rescue when they fail at something. However, when they begin work in the real world, they will not be coddled by their parents, and they will eventually be exposed to failure.
- Unaccustomed to sacrifice – Those raised in wealthy households are given things they did not have to work or sacrifice for, making the pursuit of wealth more painful and less tolerable.
Why do the children of the wealthy usually remain wealthy?
Children from more affluent backgrounds tend to receive greater financial transfers and capital income, a portion of which they allocate for savings. They also tend to hold a larger proportion of their wealth in higher-return investments such as stocks and shares.
Which family holds the most wealth?
The Al Nahyan family, Walton family, Hermès family, Mars family, Al Thani family, and Koch family are the top 10 richest families in 2023, each with an estimated wealth of $305 billion. These families are often admired, envied, or resentful due to their culture of idolizing wealth and fetishising the rich. The appeal of these families is limited to those who originally made their fortunes through business, and their ability to maintain this elite status is scrutinized. This list is limited to families who originally made their fortunes through business.
Which sibling is most likely to be rich?
A new theory suggests that older siblings tend to make more money and perform better on cognitive tests than younger siblings. An updated working paper by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that younger siblings were two to three times as likely to be hospitalized for respiratory conditions during the first year of their lives as their older siblings. The disparity was the largest when the secondborn child was born in the fall or winter, when respiratory illnesses are more common, and when the siblings were closer in age. This finding suggests that older siblings may be more likely to earn more money and perform better on cognitive tests.
📹 Pub Fosterhjem: A child has nothing to eat at school
It’s lunch time at a Norwegian school. The students are coming out of their lunch box. But a child discovers that his is empty. Sad …
My sister moved to UK years ago to pursuit a better life. She settled there, got married and started a family. My mom went visit for Easter celebration, in April and it was still cold. My mom is the type a person who wears a sweater in summertime. She asked my sister to turn up the heat. My sister said no, because she now has a kid and other priorities, and is basically on a strict budget and turning up the heat will be reflected later on, on her bills. I realized I made the right decision to not move there when my sister gave me the chance. I live in Romania, and I will choose Romania anytime, everytime over UK.
I lived in USA for 6 months and worked at a Christian resort back in 2011, and I remember the amount of food that was thrown away every day was shocking to me. Some people were super picky with food and just left a lot on their dish. The kitchen just discarded a lot of “imperfect” food as well. The ice cream in the counter was thrown away because the tub was already open and they couldn’t sell it that same day. I think rich countries just forget when they were poor and lose empathy towards the planet and humankind.
This is Heartbreaking. Bless her and other families struggling to feed themselves and their children. I studied Sociology for GCSE and we looked at poverty in the UK; I was shocked to discover that parents were fainting at work or at schools (when they drop off/pick up their children) because they’ve been starving themselves to that their children can eat. I know that schools are doing all they can to feed the children free meals, and bless them for doing that, but what about the parents too? They need to eat too or else they’ll damage their health and that’ll affect their ability to look after their children and work to provide for them. Parents should NOT have to starve themselves in order to make sure their children have three meals a day. Shocking. Absolutely shocking.
“If you live in a poor neighborhood, it has to be an area with poor schools. Poor schools mean that there are poor teachers. Poor teachers mean that you get a poor education. A poor education will only allow you to work on a poor paying job. And that poor paying job will only allow you to live again in a poor neighborhood. So it is a very vicious cycle”- Malcolm X.
The amount of food waste at the big grocery stores is shocking, in the UK and North America. I think it is great that there are organizations that rescue that food to give to those in need. The food waste might be a slightly imperfect apple for instance, or perfectly good fresh bread that had a little travel damage. In supermarkets we are used to seeing huge piles of cartoon perfect food – the rest is often needlessly discarded, very often back at the source. Speak to the manager and see if they are doing something much better with that product. It is not that those in need should have to eat bruised or out of date items of course, but sometimes the level of waste of perfectly good produce and other things seems ludicrous when children go hungry and their parents skip meals – that mother interviewed even had a 5 day a week job. In the US I know that child poverty is a major issue – the US is so wealthy and that very core concern happens? I know that many don’t like government, but when you and many others need help, someone should be doing something on a major scale. I know of restaurants that pack up food that they haven’t sold every day to donate to food kitchens. Amazing – restaurant quality food already prepared for others to enjoy the next day, every day. Apparently the amount of food waste generated could feed all the hungry people around the world. Let’s get some billionaires on this problem. And everyone else. Group effort. My neighbour has an abundant vegetable garden and hands extras – freshly picked!
The first woman had her cupboards and freezer bursting with food, some of it ready-made. When poverty strikes, you only buy grains, beans, fruits and veggies. And she isn’t thin. In some countries this kind of poverty is called luxury. That said, I am not trying to play down the economic crisis in UK, just saying that the first example looked implausible to me.
I am an american conservative. This article brought me to tears. No reason in the west anyone should go without food. Both our govts need to get their acts in gear. We have F35 jets, overpriced pieces of crap and our new B2 bombers are 2 billion a piece, but people and children are hungry and eating junk. God have mercy on our countries
I raised 4 children single handed, and while they were little I always had to ration food because my ex only paid £5.25 per week maintenance, while he lived the life of luxury. I was made to feel invisible and hopeless. Life is tough here in the UK, but the most important thing is to have a “can do” attitude. 💐💐💐 We got through it, and we were all fine. Now they’re adults they each live according to their budget, and they’re careful to maintain healthy eating habits. Since Covid things have been difficult for me, and of course for so many, but we CAN DO THIS – we British are tough people, and we will get through it! Times are not always going to be hard. It’s an opportunity to be resourceful, perhaps producing home grown veggies, and getting back in to good home cooking. Wishing everyone a happier future, one filled with hope! 💛🌱🥰
I do understand that UK is going through a tough time, all the mother has in her pantry is packets of processed food. Buying fresh vegetables and cooking lentils and rice at home will go a long way, without having to go without food. Change of lifestyle will help. Things like smaller portions of fresh meat cooked in a larger amount of sauce with rice should help until things improve. We live in Canada and the situation is similar. Grocery bills have skyrocketed beyond even the means of middle income groups. Slightly lowering standard of living, cooking at home, think of buying intelligently is the need of the hour all over the world.
My parents rarely took us anywhere on the weekends to do fun things. We played games at home or played outdoors with the neighborhood children. It never occurred to me or my siblings that our parents should be taking us to movies or theme parks. We were a family and it was what it was. Kids today watch too much fantasy or fake family tv shows… Oh, and we ate a lot of spaghetti, PB&J sandwiches, and dried beans and rice… An American.
Here in Finland stores put 30%off red stickers on items close to sell by date. One chain sells those items at 2X discount after 6pm. Have noticed lately that more and more people are going to the store around that time and buy mostly discounted stuff. Too bad that it’s usually stuff that you should not eat anyway. Preprepared garbage. Fish and meat is getting too expensive even for me and I work full time.
Where are some of these children’s fathers ????. Now in my 50s ..as a child I rarely seen my mother eat. I was fortunate to have had free school meals and a sandwich in the evening when I got home from school. Nutrition was not thought of at all it was a matter of being fed. Add poor housing single parent and debt its was unfortunately a nightmare for a child. My father was not present physically or financially. The social stigma of this in the 60s and 70s was also very isolating. Thankfully I did progress and am happy with a good husband who works so hard . Our children are well fed, educated and taken care of. It angers me that these men do not take responsibility for their children. Report on this please…this is by far one of the main reasons of child poverty.
To make ends meet I would use to shop at the 99 cent store. I couldn’t even afford medicine for myself one time a few years back. I’d pay rent, car payment, & insurance and other bills. I bought cough drops, DayQuil and night quill. All for like $7. I had $10 left in my bank account. Tell payday. The 99 cent store has saved me so many times.
So, buy much more mundane products — NON organic, beans and rice, and frozen veggies, no dessert, etc — been there and ate a very boring, assortment of foods. Cooked from scratch, relied on free veggies that were less than perfect. Wore old worn out shoes and clothes. Oh, meals my children can eat? As. Kid we had no choice — eat what is served or be hungry.
Regularly misses meals? Freezer is full. She goes into hunter mode when she goes into a supermarket? Who doesn’t? Who doesn’t like a deal? She’s got a really nice kitchen – nicer than most young people paying £2000 rent and paying 40% tax subsidising the landlords, the pensioners and the complainers. Erin does look a bit more in need but the first one, come on – she’s living in a nice place with what I can tell is a full freezer.
I grew up to poverty due to unfortunate life event as I grow up. I grew where my mom bought clearance sale food. I never felt ashamed of it. People nowadays constantly look down on people buying clearance food. Now, due to food security issues and economy many people choose to buy clearance food. Its better than letting those food to waste. Even in my country, many Non profit choose food almost expired to feed the poor. Better than wasted. The amount of waste in my country has reduced after this pandemic. I still in poverty side but I manage to chip my money for saving by buying clearance food😊 better than wasted
My nephew is on nearly 50k in London. That would have been a great sum and probably is in other parts of the UK. His family woke up recently to a cold house and no lighting because the money ran out of the gas and electric in his rented property. Most of his salary goes on rent and bills. I’m nearly 60 and have never known anything like this.
Toasted Flour Soup-Add some flour and toast it in a heavy-bottomed pot until nicely browned, stirring constantly. Add fat (oil, butter, lard, shortening) stirring all the while. Add cold water or milk or stock, stirring until smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cook until nicely thickened. Add more liquid to thin it out of you want. Violá! This recipe is basically a roux and you can add whatever you like or have on hand. The above is the basic recipe and is nice on its own but I imagine a bit of cooked peas/beans or veggies or even left over meat would be a nice addition served over biscuits or rice or potatoes. Simple, tasty, filling and can be nutritious based on what you add.
What I noticed in the Western countries is that families buy so much expensive processed food from big supermarkets. Families needs to be re-taught how to make food from scratch. It takes 30 minutes to make nutritious and cheap meals from scratch. The poor in my country is worst off than these families who are skipping a meal a day and my poor country men make meals from scratch. These families needs to be imparted life skills. I am also from a higher income group yet I don’t buy all these luxurious “gluten free” meals and expensive ready to eat meals. I buy whole grains, lenthils, pulses, flour, oil and vegetables. I always make my food from scratch and time 1 hour a meal each day for cooking, eating and cleaning up.
I noticed when shopping yesterday that meat food prices had increased again. 35p for a banana at tesco So 3 costs £1.05 Got a big bunch about 9 for £1.10 at the farm stall in the market. There was a notice posted on Facebook about government cutting free meals for children. Especially at the present cost of living crisis. My son a teacher told me that mid morning break kids are offered snacks. Some kids being hungry buy the snacks because they are hungry but then have no money for a school dinner. Jamie my son has been helping a few kids as he knows there backgrounds and feels it’s wrong to stand by and let kids not be able to have food. Free milk was cut out at junior primary years ago… Remember Maggie thatcher milk snatcher? I suspect so many families qualifying for free meals has increased the cost. We need the local councils to support free school meals. and give them the help they give to incoming migrants I posted a comment on Facebook in response to comments about children going hungry compared to MPs meals. Very Big response. I knew in past the MPs meals were subsidised and apparently still are. Someone posted the luxurious menu from the restaurant in houses of Parliament. Other comments about the expenses they can claim. So possibly they can claim food and drink expenses too? I read cabinet making decisions without consulting MPs. There has been a suggestion put forward that anyone over 75 should not have the right to vote. and new proposals that Pensioners should pay national insurance.
As I’m on a diet, I realised it’s similar to being hungry except mine is optional and I have devised a plan to stay full throughout the day with the most nutritious meal and cheapest options. Breakfast: instant oatmeal (cooked with hot water and add some sugar or honey). Adding milk, fruits or nuts are optional. Lunch & Dinner (usually I will skip lunch and have early dinner since I am full from breakfast): brown Rice(makes you full longer) with chicken/lentils/beans(edamame)/tofu/canned fish(sardines/tuna) and cabbage/onions/carrots/celery/lettuce which are the cheapest and most nutritious options available.
Some of this doesn’t hang together – mum saying she misses meals whilst showing a cupboard full of food – some from Waitrose! and a freezer stuffed full of food. Young girl crying about poverty wearing a Nike gym top. I’m not saying there’s no poverty – but everything’s relative. ‘Poverty’ now was the norm in the 50’s and 60’s
Three meals a day a luxury in a first world country yet for us here in our village in my third world country we never miss meals. We have fruits in plenty, vegetables. We might not have all the trinkets of technology but we are healthy, we can wake up in the morning and milk the cows, harvest sweet potatoes from the garden, eat as may tangerines as I want by just sitting under the tangerine tree.
I’m a single parent with 4children .I don’t beleive that parents miss meals There’s lots of ways to cut down on food bills like instead of frozen chips buy a bag of potatoes the bag will do 3/4 days meal pizzas etc pkt bacon to go with potatoes I cud write a book .Wee need to go back to meals are mums cooked as wee where poor .Don’t get me wrong Elec gas &things is disgraceful feel like opening my fire up,I would burn loads but not good for environment. GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY .
Really and why ?? A value pack of good mince makes numerous meals for the freezer, same with chicken thighs etc. I noticed her freezer was full, with what ? Yes it is hard, I had 3 children, worked, no tax credits, but you budget, you batch cook, and buy a slow cooker. It’s hard for everyone, but sometimes I think some have never had to go without .
Same here only eat 1 bedtime meal can’t afford it any more was a care worker for 6 years cleaned people’s shit n had to leave 3 years ago due to long covid n also got depression I asked 4 help from dwp pip n got declined said I was fine n should get back into work also having argument with the wife n literally got pains all over my body sometimes I think life ain’t worth living u help people n pay your taxes n don’t even get no help n wish me luck in starting work next week
This isn’t “food poverty”! This is general poverty. If food isn’t accessable for EVERYBODY, then they also won’t be able to afford toilettries, pay for utilities, clothing, entertainment. These things aren’t luxury. They’re the bare necessities. And what are governments doing about these things? Little to nothing. If education is the key out of poverty, why in the hell is it so expensive? If people have jobs, why are they still struggling? The same damn people talking about wanting to change the lives of their nstion, are the same keeping things the way they are as much as possible. Because it benefits them and their lineage. Look at how the poor teenager has to skip meals so her younger siblings can eat and she has to watch her mom suffer and cry. And so begins mental illness and other horrors. Politicians are disgusting. People with power are disgusting. Oftentimes abusing the same power given to them by the people to punish them in return.
I am disabled and on benefits, my daughter is my carer and receives carers allowance, we rent and pay 1200pm plus 200pm electric plus 150pm gas and still manage to eat reasonably well – meaning monotonous menus but cheap. My entire weekly shop for four adults is under 200 (son-in-law is paying off debts plus paying his bus/train fares for work so doesn’t contribute to the bills). We have phone bills at 40pm for four mobiles and still manage on what we receive. I sometimes wobder where peoples money goes (especially as parents get children’s allowance which isn’t a small amount) because lots of us with very little still manage. Mind you we don’t have a telly, no cable/tv licence fees, don’t smoke or drink, no holidays away, seldom buy new clothes from charity shops, and cook everything from scratch, maybe that’s where we save money but even when my daughter was school age we still managed to live on my disability plus hubbys adult dependence alliwance (sickness benefit???). My neighbour did as well as she cared for her ill father-in-law so was reliant on benefits as well. I do aometimes wonder especislly when I know families who get much more than we do – wages and/or benefits – yet still claim they can’t afford to eat or dress the family. Good luck to those featured, hope things improve with time and living costs fall once the Ukrainian/Russian war is over.
These same people stand on the sidelines and cheer every time a royal drives by . The royals who wouldn’t be caught dead wearing the same designer clothes more than once while people are starving. Also people stopped having children during the depression. Now no one who reports on the starving families dares to suggest maybe not having kids they can’t afford. People should be held accountable.
I am a Msc Adult Nursing graduate, lsbu refuses to graduate me due to discrimination and outstanding tuition fee which should be free regardless. I am on UC with a toddler, I tried my best to educate myself to a masters level to get out of poverty, give my child a good life, regardless of this, the hospital i trained in GSTT by far is worst and the university is below standards. Ongoing f2p for not engaging with my emails which was a week late due to PND after having my baby. When there are nurses getting away with errors and murders which the RCN panel giving them further training with a slap to the wrist. It’s really twisted tbh. My disability as a diabetic isn’t the case, its manageable with adjustments to break, and to a part time position as a community nurse. Their talking utter nonsense. Anyways I am happy on UC, what more can I do…I don’t need the stress, I’ve wasted 4yrs studying and it’s gotten me worse off with SL debts.
I was born in the 50s in UK and remember we never had the choice of food kids have today our main meals were pretty bland veggi dinners but it was very health homemade rice pudding or macaroni etc… I know we should not be going back over for a standard of living but heat or eat was never an issue then as we only had one coal fire and no double glazing and these times won’t last forever so it’s up to the people as well as the government to get through it we survived and made me glad for all the things I have today because we do all have a lot more than say 50/60 Yr ago I’ve just seen a news article for children in poverty here in UK and just saying in the background I noticed more gadgets in the kitchen than I have now so really…..oh and we had miners strikes in the middle of my upbringing so it can be done people….
“Look at me I am so poor” proceeds to open a fridge cramped with food packets, meat and grains with gluten free choices. And there are children in madagascar surviving on mud soup and dried up grass. I guess not owning a Rolls-Royce would soon be considered a sign of poverty in Europe. It’s a mockery of poverty.
Shopping in Waitrose and being on the breadline. Probably not the best strategy? Go to Morrsions reduced section in the evening, got a couple of large chickens for a quid each, buy some rice, stock, peas and out of nowhere comes a very cheap, healthy nutritious meal. Theres always a way round these things if your clever about it.
this has been happening in my country ever since martial law I think or earlier. my mom who is born in 1950 has to wake up at dawn everyday to do farming before she goes to school so she can have a few coins for school requirements. Her parents can’t support her schooling. At home they would just eat rice and salt on most days. Sometimes soy sauce or fish sauce. They are so grateful if they have cooking oil in the kitchen. Just cooked rice with dabs of cooking oil on top. She has tatered flipflops for shoes, and just walks to get there. I am so proud of her because she finished her university. That’s why I never took any chances of failing during college. I am grateful for her hardship. sadly, there are still kids eating and living like this today #kaninattoyo
But why is that lady at the beginning “missing meals” to feed her kids when her cupboards and freezer are stuffed with food? I could feed a family for weeks on those stores. And the concept of buying organic coconut oil or a bottled sauce reduced by only a few pence when I’m skint is strange indeed to me. The money involved could be much better spent, and you have to wonder how much of this has just been pulled together for shock value. If it’s true that the lady is not eating, then frankly that seems to be more from choice than necessity…
This is how I have lived all my life. Hunting offers, planning meals, and always thinking ahead. I am an educated person with good job. Part of what is happening now is clearly because we had it well for so long. Convenience, vacations and credits became the norm and we kind of forgotten what we can afford for real not on paper. It is going to be hard but some ppl might learn some new skills.
This is nothing new my mum was working 2 jobs in the 90s/00s and she had to skip her melas so we could eat. The thing is if you buy vape, cigarettes, alcohol and illegal drugs you have no right to say you can’t afford food and bills because it’s obvious you have other priorities. You want more money then stop smoking and drinking alcohol as they are luxuries not necessities.
As for the third comment here, me as a romanian living in Cluj Transilvania, I can tell you that it s not true that romanians live better here(Ro),depends who you ask, yes there are many people that have money and lands, bussiness etc first of all we are after italy on number 7 eurostat statistic for not mananging our house heating. UK was in a better situation in the statistic. So still people here where winters are harsh are struggling more. Some cities are also very expensive due to the many corporate jobs and international students that came for medschool.
We didn’t have much food as children growing up in. CA and I remember some friends by the foods they shared with me as a child. Now I don’t buy anything I consider special/extra, like spices… Sometimes I want to cry as a I walk down the food isle knowing I need to be very careful what I spend my money on. I never eat three meals a day. And CA says I make too much money on social security (which doesn’t even cover housing), so they denied me Cal-fresh. Wishing everyone a good meal and much joy.
I was born here, my family is only from England. And so am I despite what my tone may have you think, I don’t know my biological father or his family. My kitchen growing up, and I’m talking secondary really because that’s when I remember growing an interest in what is actually in the fridge, freezer and cupboards at home. Looked an awful lot like yours. Full. But I was always starving hungry. I could never understand why I was never fed food I actually liked and the same shit, that meant I would just starve until school or tomorrow because there’s always another meal the next day. But when I looked there was tins galore and the freezer could hardly close, only to realise as an adult it was all shit and my mum didn’t want to use. For whatever the reason maybe, tired from work, can’t think of a recipe to make with the ingredients/ things in your cupboard, fridge and freezer or because she just couldn’t be bothered to do anything other the same routine. Although as an adult, I have kids, I privately rent, I have a car, my kids go breakfast club every day because we’re an early house, my kids go after-school club often so they can enjoy more social time, I have a fat sky package, always have heating and basic utilities. My children make breakfast themselves unless it’s the toaster they need or want instant oatmeal, they always have lunch and tea/dinner. They have open access to the snack draw and the snacks in the fridge. I can’t always be bothered to make food after school so I order on deliveroo also, my kids have a shit ton of board games, books, toys, paints and playdoh that i keep maintained and update regularly.
UK belong to the g7 countries and yet there are still children starving. maybe because high cost of living not enough to support a family needs food clothing and shelter. I think you need to prioritize basic needs ex. if you have a car. use public transpo. use bicycle. save on car insurance. gas, maintenance etc. sacrifice a little bit.
Nobody is starving; obesity and being overweight is over 56 percent in that country. I’m happy to see the free meals are vegetables and not processed carbs; that is the only free food that should be available. People who complain about not being able to afford food always seem to be able to buy cigarettes, tattoos and weed.
Why are you buying from Waitrose then? Start shopping somewhere that is cheaper! Make the sacrifices or sacrifices will be made for you! At this way you will have control of it and you will all eat buying cheaper food. Nothing wrong with eating cheap food, it does the same job at the end of the day. Food is fuel when it comes down to it, Use it as such.
Until 30 years ago, many British didn’t have decent dinner. The kids only had toasts and that was it. Untill 80 years ago, meat was luxurious in the UK, too. Now they can afford to have three meals or more. Obeisity and modern diseases are rampant there, too. Quality diet, not the quantity may be the critical issue. The modern times adversaries. Ironic.
Victory gardens (beans, potatoes, winter squash, garlic, radish are the bomb). Wood burner (plenty of free wood, use a hack saw to cut it down and trolley to carry it). Water from washing dishes, showers, hand and clothes washing (no machine washing, bucket, a stick, detergent, water and some muscle) to be used to flush toilets. More walking. Put on more clothes.
I believe some people might be overstating things to get sympathy. Nobody is starving in the western world. There are places to go to, to get a meal and/or food. I am so tired of hearing that parents dont eat so that their kids can. This is not 1929. This lady is overweight and fridge and pantry have more things than mine. Plss…
I do the same I have no other choice I never thought it would ever have come to this and this will be the first year without Christmas presents and goodies in the cupboards to snack on there will be no sitting down with family with the heating on warm and cosy perusal Christmas movies how have it come to this 😔 barley living and struggling to keep a roof over our heads! family’s who are working 2 jobs and still have to go to the food bank something has to give!
The woman has a full of food fridge and complains?! Really? You have no idea what is hungry! I’m from Ukraine and we lived in poverty for about for 11 years after collapsing of the USSR. I was too skinny at that time. My head was dizzing, I was weak and didn’t have energy. In addition we lived in a cold flat without heating, and I wore the cloths I was ashamed of. My mum worked but they didn’t pay. In our fridge we had kashas without butter and vegetable soup.If we had such food in the fridge like this woman, we would be happy at that time. So, I can’t believe her. And we didn’t have any help from government, unlike her. At any case, if Britain have money to fuel the war in Ukraine – they definitely are not poor!
This is so very sad. I had to give up work because I was diagnosed with cervical dystonia which is a neurological disorder. I didn’t want to give up work but was told that I had to. I am only on ESA as I was told that I don’t meet the criteria for pip. Excuse me I didn’t ask to get sick. I try and make my money last but I must admit I am a little bit worried about putting on the heating at the moment. I am sorry but we invite all those foreign people in to are country when we need the help are selves.
People keep talking about how the UK is a rich country, yet its children seem to be going hungry, this is a very fixable problem, for any government that wants to fix it, yet the problem seems to be growing in the UK. I see the single parent households showed here, but where is the child support from the X partners who produced those kids?
Look at the cupboard at 0:01 into the article. She’s got incredibly high price ingredients in tiny convenience friendly portions: Spray Olive Oil vs 2L Can Fancy Garlic Jar vs Bulk Garlic Powder Black Pepper in glass jar vs Bulk tub… The list goes on, she doesn’t know how to shop. Take a calculator shopping (in fact your phone has one), work out prices per 1kg or per 100g and buy the lowest cost per mass, not lowest cost per unit. She’s shopping for high price reduced items! Reduced at Waitrose is still more expensive than normal cost at Asda or Food Warehouses basic lines.
Lol Raw coconut oil, Virgin olive oil, Chipotle hot sauce, miso organic soup 🤣. Yet saying food poverty. These things are no essentials. I’m from UK average wage salary, 3 kids. Yes things have gone expensive. But I’m probably spending less as I’ve completely changed my shopping habits. From Asda to only Aldi. Buying just essentials from Aldi range, 39p bread, 36p beans, 2.45 tub of butter. There essential range of just apples, banana and pears. ( No other exotic fruits like before) Cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce for salad. Going to Asian grocery stores to buy 10kg of rice and wholemeal flours. 10kg onion bag £5 from markets. My only high expenditure is meat, fish ect. But I make small amount go a long way. Nobody in our family is missing meals and we are eating well balanced meals. Probably more healthier than before cut down a lot of from unhealthy snacks.
It must be incredibly hard when you’ve got kids. Not only because they don’t bring any income, but they’re also more sensitive about foods and won’t eat something that’s not familiar enough for them, and they are also insecure at school when they see other kids eating something more interesting. I remember my mom using cookie cutters to cut shapes into deli cuts to make “lunchables” for us, and how I was teased by other kids.
I live in the country. There is no waste in our tiny home. Non usable food goes to the dog or chickens, veggie waste goes to chickens or a compost pile to grow some food. I know most people probably live in a flat or an apartment, hopefully there is a patio or some lighted areas to grow greens at least. I had an apartment and grew some greens under a light or in a window.
I grew up under the Thatcher the milk snatcher regime, I went to school for a hot meal everyday, I walked to school with holes in my shoe with cardboard/newspaper covering the holes, as then in the 70s/80s as now under the Tories we have this poverty, a football star Marcus Rashford supporting school meals & food banks, this really tells how desperate the #Conaervatives in my childhood & now have been a stain & strain & how much damage they cause
Dear UK citizens and residents, please move to Republic of Korea (South Korea)! We have amazing hot meals for children in schools, a lot of universities offer great lunch on the ridiculously lower price, plus as foreigners you can apply to scholarships to study in the universities outside of Seoul area. There are many jobs in the IT, retail, entertainment industry, factories, service sectors, education sector. My country suffers from thr lowest birthrate and we all worry about our future! We need more foreigners to come and settle down in Korea.
I never imagined I would need this service. I can’t believe what the government have done . I served 23 years and got pension. But I can’t walk and I am having to use pension to live . I get £670 a month and my bills are £590 I am 51; and I wish I could raise enough money to go to another country and end my life . I am not living, I am a burden. I will only be better off when I get to 67 . They made me sell my house 7 years ago to fund my care . £236 they charged me . Then my money ran out and they moved me to a one bedroom complex. It’s horrible. I see 3 carers a day for 20 mins . If anyone can help me raise the cash . I will give you all my medals. I’m begging you to help a soldier. I have done what I needed to do in life and I ask for your help.
That women’s first kitchen packed to the rafters with food. Who shops at waitrose for a bargain even ketchup knocked down was more expensive than branded at asda. Coconut oil? Saxa salt? These people need to be educated. Those item alone cost a fortune. I know people who go to food banks and spend their benefits on non-essentials because they know free food is there for them and they’re being handed free money left right and centre. Us workers on barely minimum wage get nothing but help with energy. I know this post won’t be popular but stating facts not opinions.
We had a beautiful life in Sri Lanka but not any more. People are starving not having money to buy even a bread. Bread was like Rs. 50/- . Now it is Rs. 450/-. Everything went up in price all of a sudden where nobody can afford to eat like before. This is all because of the leaders fault they say. Political issues. They have spent a lot for their benefits and never thought of people. It’s so pathetic and do not feel like eating while poor hasn’t anything to eat.
We don’t struggle financially thanks to the work I do and owning my own company, but you can feed 5 people a massive bowl of home made soup for a couple of pounds, I see some supermarkets sell bread for 35pence a loaf, bags of vegetables for a pound, and I don’t understand what families cannot find 20 quid a week.
Rarely in my life have I eaten three times a day. I could afford it now a days, but the habit of a lifetime is hard to change. Im not used to not feeling hungry, it feels too strange to be satiated . Even though eating adequately makes me feel stronger and less tired I find it hard to keep up for more than a week or so before going back to my normal habit. Eating normally feels like I am eating way too much, I also feel very guilty. Id much rather we are all undernourished than have the government ministers with only £5000 for their weekly expenses though.
Education as an Antidote for Hunger Recently, the UN, and several related organizations, marked two significant dates: the World Food Day and the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. International organizations for the poor and hungry have existed at least since the end of World War II, but neither poverty nor hunger have been eradicated. If anything, they have increased. What, then, are we doing wrong, and can we change the dismal reality? The problem is not lack of food; there is plenty of it. In fact, much of the food that is produced gets thrown away and pollutes the water and the ground rather than feeding hungry mouths. So people are hungry not for lack of food, but because there is no interest in helping people get it. The prevailing attitude is one of narcissism. We care only for ourselves and suspect everyone else’s intentions toward us. If we have any surplus funds, we use them to build walls and fences, not to help others. This is how we behave around the world as individuals and as nations. To quiet our conscience, we create organizations to tend to the poor and hungry. We fund them generously and appoint functionaries and bureaucrats to deal with the problem. But if our hearts were with the poor, we would not leave them in the hands of bureaucrats, just as we would not leave our children in the hands of social workers to see to their upbringing. We would see that the people we care about get what they need. Because we do not care, we appoint uncaring people who present plans for dealing with the spreading poverty and hunger, and announce special days to bring the problem to public awareness.
This is one of the most beautiful ads I have ever seen! It is beautiful because those kids just gave him what he needed. They didn’t make him feel horrible about needing help! THAT is how we should treat each other! Fantastic! Whoever did this article deserves an award! The first time I ever saw it years ago, it brought tears to my eyes! Love this!
I love this commercial. It’s so moving. I had to google translate the words, but even without knowing the language, the message of love and friendship is clear. It’s an ad for foster homes, but it could be used for so much more. It’s so true that most children are usually generous of heart, open to giving and ready to be friends and extend love. You see it every time a toddler goes up and hugs a smaller child. It’s their basic instinct to show love. Great commercial!
I felt so bad for him because this was me as a child my parents didn’t care enough that I would have food for lunch at school knowing I always hated school lunch, let me say this to all the parents out there take care of your kids whether you forgot to give them lunch because you was late for work or your a busy person this doesn’t justify the hurt you putting towards your kids his feelings was hurt 😔 he see’s everyone eating and he has no food if you don’t want to be parents please give them to someone that deserves kids like myself
It recall of my childhood. I am from a very poor family, and we sometimes cannot afford even rice….luckily, the countryside i stayed grow with allot of fruits and the people (my neighbors) so nice that allow me to have the fruit when hungry…so I have Guava, banana, mangosteen to survive my childhood…
I grow up in poverty, i know exactly how it feels to get hungry and look into the empty lunchbox with much sorrow. I always asked my teacher to go to toilet, but i hanging around the yard and make friend with the loneliness. Now i have enough money to buy all the food i want, and i know that moment i will cherish it forever
This happened to me when I was a kid. We were very very poor and I still go to a school even if I don’t have money to buy food nor have anything to eat. I always walk for an hour to go school and an hour home too. I got bullied a lot and most of the time, I made up an excuse that I need to go to the toilet on lunch breaks because I don’t have anything to eat. I just walked in the corridors and there were time I hide in the bathroom to kill time and wait for the break time to get over before I come back. Always bring tears to my eyes because I know how this feels. I’m like that boy when I was a kid.
Brings tears every time, Its one of those things impossible to explain, going hungry isnt missing a meal or two and getting hangry. But going to sleep with stomache pains waking up exhausted and being expected to sit in class all day. I tell my son always to look for anyone not eating at lunch, and share.
I was a junior high school teacher in Japan. Even in Japan, there are parents who can’t even make their children’s lunch box. When I learned that fact, I made two bento boxes and took them with me. Another parent found out about my actions and even cooperated with me. Not all parents have the ability to educate. But it is true that the answers to the problems are all around us.🍱
I am secondary student and i sometimes doesn’t eat anything from 7:00 morning-2:30 afternoon in school and i was used to it One day it is a tuition launched in school and i just follow my daily ruitine to go library instead of having lunch. I don’t know how my friend notice this but they called me and want me to eat with them together i will never forget it Thank so much my friends
Thx for the people who gave this vid a like because ya have a life and I do to sadly I never had a yummy meal in school befor because my mom didn’t have money so she started to work 2 job and I never got to see her or talk to her and so here I am waiting for subscribers but I only have 6 But it’s ok some people hate meh and I’m srry I only have made one vid because I suck
What a world it would be if we all acted like this; however, it seems some people are always worried about “paying someone else’s bill” rather than having this attitude. I once read (in a book by Father Carroll Stuhlmueller, C.P.) that the ” Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes” in the Scriptures may NOT be the “POOF MORE FOOD”; but, rather that because a little boy was willing to share his little loaves and fishes (when listening to “THE” Itinerant Preacher teach about LOVE) that it opened the hearts of others to share their food….and there was more than enough left over after that. Interesting thought!
One day…a post on Facebook asked “what is your favorite movie scene?” Post it here. I thought about all of my favorite movies….”Coming To America”….”Black Belt Jones”…….”Return Of The Dragon”….”The Associate”…….”Strictly Business”….etc. I started to post a scene from one of them. Then, I remembered seeing this clip and decided to choose it. I don’t care how hardcore you think you are….if this doesn’t get next to you….you might need a soul transplant. The kindness of the human spirit is a powerful and beautiful thing. I especially love the other kids trying their hardest to act like they don’t know what’s going on. 😂❤️💪🏾
I remembered when I was at second grade. That time I am always bullied. Because I am too quiet and shytype, and sumb in education. Well That was on second grade. I have no lunch because my grandmother did not go to the school to give me my lunch. And I was like a stupid kid crying there alone in my chair silently. So I have no choice but to cry. I have no money to buy. And when my classmates realized I am crying and I have no food, they all gave me. I remember my one classmate’s Lunch box cover as my Plate. Then each of them gave me rice. My other classmate gave me egg the scrambled, the other one gave me bacon and another gave me sausage, the other one is hotdog. I just cried still and too shy to eat them but I am still thankful and ate it all. Second grade, I am shy, But now I am on grade 12 it made me cry perusal this article because I remember those times. Even I watched this as many as I see it on facebook, it still makes me Cry. Adding the sad music like the songs of Kina. I wish those classmates of me and my teacher on my second grade is good until now. I had no chance to say them thank you before so, Thank you I hope you read this soon if you still remember the looser kid that has no food. Thank youuu all
Seriously i been in that situation before because my father past away when i 2 year old. Since then we train to be very independent….during my time school start at 7.30am and break at noon. I and few friends will scout around villages to find some fruit to eat. It very hard to climb up since you start at a very buttom but finally i was successful get my degree even it late fews year(financial problem). Never give up guys!!!
Is no one gonna talk about the fact that his mom packed him an empty container lollll like she really grabbed a container, look around for food, and then said ” nah, we don’t got enough” and just throw that in his bag???? Like junior really couldn’t feel there’s nothing in the container too? I been laughing at his for the past 10 min lollllllllllll
I have something to share… I have a classmate who just study… And then I ask her “did you eat?” She said “yea” but with a sad face… The next day I ask my mom to pack me a sandwich but the other one is for my classmate who didnt get to eat… At school it’s our lunch time… I’m about to give her the sandwich but when she pull out something in her pocket….I saw a letter… My classmate cried… She saw me carrying a sandwich towards her… And she keeps staring at it… I said “it’s really for you!” She said “really?” With a smile in her face…I gave her the sandwich I ask her if I can read the letter… She was Shy at first but she still gave me the letter… It’s from her mom.. “dear honey, I’m sorry if I didn’t give some money or some food… I don’t have any money to buy food… I love you” I said to her… I will always share my food with you 🙂
Every time I need to feel better about this dumpster fire world, I watch this. Even though it’s just a commercial, kids are pretty great sometimes and I’ve seen many do kind things like this before. P.S. no kid should go hungry ever for any reason. We throw billions of tons of food out every year because we allow corporations to do that instead of using it to feed hungry people.
When I was about his age living in Canada while my dad was stationed there with airforce for 5 years there was this one kid who would go around the class room after we went to recess and pick up crumbs left on floor from us other kids eating lunch. The teacher told me about this cuse we was talking about spmething and that brought up the boy who did the crumbs thing. So next day I told rest of class and they was in shock and we all decided after we ate save some of our sides like grapes carrots apples oranges and what ever and leave them on our desks. I had wrote him a letter saying after we go to recess there will be food on our desks its for you so go get it after we leave and enjoy it’s for you hope it helps. That boy was so happy knowing he was gonna eat at least once for sure that day. Well we did it everyday for him
Please I need help, I need to find this exact lunchbox (in yellow though) because my mom says she had one but lost it and misses it (and I want it as a mother’s day present), but I searched every formulation of ”grey clips yellow lunchbox” on Google and couldn’t find it, do you guys know where I could find it ???
In the lunchline at school there was these 4 big rowdy guys in front of me I saw them each swipe something extra from the line one grabbed a burger one a piece of fruit one another thing of fries and one a milk carton the one closest to me saw me perusal them and gave me this despret expression I kindav shrugged and didn’t say anything as I was heading to my table I saw them give the food they swiped to their friend sitting at their table guy was skinny and obviously not doing well at home The guy who had looked at me noticed me again and smiled I nodded back in understanding and went about my day Wasn’t my place to judge them and their hearts were in the right place
