The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has advised furloughed federal employees to offer to perform chores for landlords in exchange for rent payment. The letter, posted by accident during President Trump’s unannounced visit to Iraq on December 26, suggested that furloughed workers could offer to do handyman chores, including painting and carpentry work, in exchange for some of the rent owed. However, the letter was quickly rebuked on Twitter.
The letter suggests that tenants should keep up the place on their own and be treated as tenants, not children or employees. Tenants are not legally required to do chores, but they should have an honest open conversation with the tenant and have a legal notice ready to cancel. If bills are going up, then renegotiate rent.
Generally, landlords are responsible for cleaning their property before a new tenant moves in, which is one way to ensure the unit is safe and habitable. It is not illegal in this context, but it is not enforceable as a landlord. Landlords should consider providing tenants with cleaning supplies, pest control services, or a schedule for common area cleaning to help tenants maintain a clean living space.
In conclusion, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management has provided advice to furloughed federal workers on how to explain their precarious financial situation to creditors and landlords.

Which gender does more chores?
Around 91 of women with children spend at least an hour per day on housework, compared to 30 of men with children. Employed women spend about 2. 3 hours daily on housework, while employed men spend 1. 6 hours. Gender gaps in housework participation are the largest among couples with children, at 62 percent. Research shows that parental role models are the primary mechanism for entrenching gender roles in terms of housework responsibilities, ensuring they pass from one generation to the next, especially from fathers to sons.
The smallest gender gaps in housework participation are among those aged 18-24 years, but only 19 of young men spend an hour on cooking and housework a day, compared to 39 of young women. Adolescent girls and young women do more unpaid work in the childhood home than their male counterparts, and gender roles, divisions, and habits start early.

Avoid using chores as a punishment for wrongdoings, as it may lead to negative associations and make it harder for children to do their chores in the future. Instead, set chores for your household at a time that works best for your family and create a routine around it. Avoid busy times like before bed or when kids first get home from school.
Set a chore deadline to set expectations for when a task needs to be done, giving your children some responsibility to choose when they do it within that timeframe. Setting time limits can also be a fun way to encourage children to complete their chores and make it fun for them to beat the timer.
Do rich people do housework?
A recent Forbes survey revealed that many billionaires still choose to do some household chores and domestic tasks themselves, despite the ease of outsourcing. Over a third of the respondents regularly grocery shop and take out the garbage, while 40 cook and walk their dogs. Over half watch their children or grandchildren’s sports games. However, the survey suggests that these ultra-rich have their limits, with only 10 of the respondents reporting doing yardwork regularly.
The only task less popular was laundry, which only 8 of the billionaires said they tend to do. Some members of the superrich still do these ordinary tasks, such as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates, who have both discussed their habits of washing dishes every night.
Do you think there should be specific household chores for boys and girls?
Building an equitable chore routine involves two principles: equal participation from children in household tasks, regardless of gender; and equal participation from both genders in both inside and outside chores. This is crucial for children to grow confidently into gender equality and thrive in adulthood. To achieve this, create a gender-balanced environment at home, where household habits like chores, allowance, language, and parenting roles are perfect opportunities for teaching gender fairness. Some suggestions for creating household routines that go beyond outdated gender norms include:
- Encouraging equal participation from children in household tasks;
- Encouraging equal participation from both genders in both inside and outside chores;\n3

Are you thinking about being a landlord? This video covers the most common tasks and chores a landlord will have to do.
Don’t worry Congress made sure their paychecks where funded through 2019 before the first shutdown. Wouldn’t want the jerks who can’t pass legislation to actually suffer the consequences of their own shutdown. We need to pass a amendment that the Congress and the president are the last to be paid out of the entire federal budget.
So long as the Democrats don’t punk out like they always do the government will not be open anytime soon. There’s also several Republicans that are against us as well. As they don’t have the vote now when they have majority rule in the House and Senate. The pressure has to mount on that buffoon of a president so he gives in and signs spending bill with no border wall money at all.
How are they to work (with out pay) and do chores. Besides which if chores are needed I am sure there are already people in place to do them. This man is so out of touch. How many chores would one have to do to pay rent, mortgages, food, car payments and all the other costs of day to day living? Wow chores pay more than they once did. Cutting grass must pay a lot!!!
I can imagine that conversation with the banks going like this: Hello I’m a government employee and unfortunately because of the government shutdown, I can’t pay my mortgage at the end of December. Can you find it in your heart to grant me sometime until the shutdown ends? To which the bank will respond: we’re sorry to hear that the shutdown has made it hard for you and we do understand how this could be a problem for you and your family however with that being said GIVE US OUR F’g MONEY OR GET THE F OUT OF THE HOUSE M/F
I don’t know if it has been said yet or not, but this indirectly affects others. Take people who rent a home. The owner of the home might rely on that monthly payment of rent from the renter for their own bills. So what good would washing their dishes be if the owner can’t pay their bills because their renter isn’t getting paid from the government?
Work for the landlord? Of course, that will solve all the Gov’t Emp problems! They can also work for the car manufacturer or bank to pay car payments or house payments, grocery store to buy food, insurance company to pay health insurance and car insurance! So the gov’t emp will need to work at least 5 full-time jobs to replace the one full-time job Trump stole from them!
I’ll betcha anything that Trump’s dad would never have given a tenant the option to work in place of the rent. ( the “Gross Pumpkin” maybe would have given women a trade of rent for “favors”. ) Landlords need the cash and most of them just collect the rent for the real landowners so no, that won’t fly and is just another dumb idea on the heap of them that is still growing.
Yeah …. this is ridiculous. I can’t even imagine something like this happening here in Germany. I don’t think there is even a possibility of federal workers just flat out not getting money. It boggles my mind that not only can the US government just stop paying its workers …. but they also force them to show up at work anyway. Wtf.
I can see several income tax violations here for both the landlord (who may claim a missing month of income when it didn’t happen that way) and the person working income tax free. All being instigated and recommended by the federal, yes federal government. Not one, but TWO years will be affected too because of the timing and peoples accounting bills will ensure a net loss
If our tax and government subsidy system wasn’t so fucked up this is what we would ideally be subsidizing, workers who need to pay the rent or maybe tell the land Lords to give them a break and write it off as a tax break that you know was actually necessary and helpful. Of course if we had an ideal government we wouldn’t let idiot politicians let this happen in the first place
The OPM advice was sent in a tweet that included three “sample letters” employees could send to landlords, mortgage companies and other creditors explaining why they might be having a difficult time paying their bills just now — and offering to stretch out payments over time. Plus suggesting if they need legal advice to please consult with your personal attorney. In the letter intended for landlords, workers offer to trade handyman chores — including “painting and carpentry work” — in exchange for some of the rent owed. The OPM suggested workers who can’t pay their rent could somehow afford a “personal attorney.” The Federal Workers who voted for Trump because he promise to build a wall and make Mexico, must be so proud that they will not recieve a raise so Trump can make American citizens pay for his wasteful wall instead. So must winning.
Thank the people who work under contract and can’t just you know leave their job like military personnel, I really don’t give a shit with their situation because they work for the government and they know the risk of working for the government. It’s not like the company folded and left them without severance. They will get a fat check once a new budget is sign because they’ll get that paid. Maybe it’s because I see a lot of government employees it works or sit on their ass when I walk into government building so it doesn’t break my heart. I’m just a cold-hearted bastard it has to work almost every day just to make enough to survive.
We the People have some chores, or rather, imperatives just now. We must each do our part, through civilized, civic action, and ask our friends and families to do the same. To begin, we must consistently and clearly communicate our stance to our reps, along with our, “reps,” on this and all critical concerns. We must join the ongoing work to eliminate Big $ from our elections/gov., the toxic intrusion which has led us to this current abysmal circumstance. Trump is hostile, ignorant, destructive, inept and entirely unfit. For the safety and well being of our People, nation and the greater good of the world, Trump and his entire gang need to be removed.
