i do really love how malcolm’s family started rubbing off on stevie’s as the show went on, like stevie became increasingly like malcolm and abe started adapting hal’s craziness. there was that one episode where malcolm said whatever his family was that made them so dysfunctional was contagious, and i think they did a good job proving that as the show went on
EDIT 1 thousand likes? Thanks! Lol Nah, don’t hate when people do that? Booo. If you see this and you get a bunch of likes, it’s not a brag at all. Just smile and take the likes, never do this. 😂 Original comment a Month Ago I love how in Hal’s heart, even as angry as he is, he would never suspect his friends of racism. His only concern was that he was being laughed at for being poor, one of his few insecurities, that even then, doesn’t bother him too much. That whole family lacks in the shame department, which is why we love them.
One of my favourite part is when they can’t go to their annual vacation and they found out that the whole neighbourhood throws bloc parties when they’re gone. Malcolm got insecure from the neighbourhood hatred. Hal and Lois convince him that they serve a purpose. And Hal says that it’s better they receive the hate instead of minorities. Malcolm in the Middle was so ahead of it’s time.
They would have reruns of this show a lot during the 2000s at 9pm. This scene made me laugh every time it comes on and the double meaning of “I will own you” in this context made it so much better. Now that I’m a lot older I have all the jokes that went over my head as a kid and have a better appreciation for the humor lol
this show was so good. it doesn’t get enough credit how pretty much every main character was a less fortunate person for some reason or another and how that can effect every aspect of your life. As a kid it really helped me come to terms with my neurodivergence (even if I didn’t know exactly what was wrong with me at the time) and the fact I was a lot poorer than all my peers
This is ACTUAL dark humor. It’s actually well written, great punchline, fantastic performance from both actors, nuanced and potentially offensive, yet not tasteless. Not some dumbass stand up comedian spouting intentionally offensive jokes just to stir up the pot and make wannabe edgy teenagers laugh.
This seems like a racism joke done right to me; it makes fun of the concept in a unique and unexpected way without just resorting to stereotype jokes that have been done 10,000 times before. Say what you want, but well-crafted humor like this is leagues ahead of the vast majority of people call “dark humor” (or as I like to call it “a thinly veiled excuse to say whatever you want, and then get upset or act condescending to people who get upset.” But that names a little long, so I guess I’ll just shorten it to “comedy mediocrity”) Also sidebar, Bryan Cranston is a national treasure.
I love how Hal is the only one to react to what he said. Abe’s face is entirely unchanged from before, to after he said it, like it didn’t even register that it could have been racist, until Hal caught it and started to backtrack. instead of letting him stumble over himself, he just shuts him up and moves past it, because there was no intent behind it, other than to smack talk lol.
It’s a phrase that is very common in competitive games. If it were two white people, no one would bat an eye. The fact that the character was self aware enough to realize that after using the term, it could be twisted to be racist and quickly backed off, means it came from a competitive stand point and not a racial one. Would be like someone that consistently locks their door when out of a car, sometimes forgets and is reminded when someone is walking by then the one time they do it and the person walking by happens to be black, makes them worry that they did it because the person is black. True racism is a pattern of events, not a single event that looks differently because the interaction happens to be between two people of different ethniticities.
Ngl, I actually think this would an incredibly healthy thing for two young boys to witness. An underlying conflict brought to light, a necessary confrontation between two friends, it’s escalation, both parties having both of their points heard despite it being a heated argument. Neither backed down, neither went too low, both articulated what they were trying to say. When the dust settled they were closer than before the fight
