In 2020, there were approximately 4.25 million Black families in the United States. This study focuses on the personal experiences of Black single mothers, highlighting their resilience and personal struggles. A Black single mother is one and a half times more likely to live in poverty. This paper presents a comprehensive review of research linking single-parent families, drawing on 16 interviews with low-income Black single mothers. The author questions the motivational and internalized racism and misogyny from women of color, as well as the growing number of young black girls getting pregnant.
Glick’s research found that single-parent families are twice as prevalent in African-American families as in other races, and this gap continues to grow. Almost 70% of black children are born to single mothers, and these mothers are far more likely to be poor than married mothers. Today, 37 of black children live in a home headed by their own two biological parents, while 48 are living in a home headed by a single parent.
Outright promiscuity was condemned in all Black communities, but prenuptial intercourse, teenage marriage, and pregnancy continued in most Black communities. It is crucial that Black single mothers receive stronger levels of support throughout the community to provide them with a more stable environment. This paper assesses the relationships between employment, race, and poverty for households headed by single women across different economic periods.

What culture has the most single mothers?
A Pew Research study reveals that the United States has the highest number of children living in single parent households, with countries like Mali, Afghanistan, Turkey, Vietnam, and Japan recording only single-digit percentages. Since the 1960s, there has been an increase in single parent households, attributed to changing perceptions about marriage and divorce and societal attitudes towards single parenthood.
This article compiles data on single parent households to shed light on patterns and trends, particularly relevant at a time when single parents face greater economic pressure due to the pandemic. The statistics provide a picture of the modern-day single parent, including demographics, challenges faced by single parents, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on single parent households.
Why are single mothers so common?
The percentage of children living with single parents in the United States has significantly increased over the second half of the 20th century, with 28 children living with single parents in 2012, according to a 2013 Child Trends study. The main causes of single parent families are high rates of divorce and non-marital childbearing. The United States has the world’s highest rate of children living in single-parent households, with 80 of single parents being mothers.
Among these mothers, 45 are currently divorced or separated, 1. 7 are widowed, and 34 never have been married. This is in contrast to earlier decades when having a child outside of marriage and being a single mother was not prominent. Today, four out of every ten children are born to an unwed mother.

Why are there so many single moms in the USA?
Since the 1960s, the number of children living with a single parent in the United States has increased due to an increase in births to unmarried women and the prevalence of divorces among couples. In 2010, 40. 7 of births were to unmarried women, with 11 children living with unmarried parents, 15. 6 with divorced parents, and 1. 2 with widowed parents. The 2010 Census showed 27 children living with one parent, consistent with the emerging trend. The most recent data shows approximately 13.

Why are there so many single moms in the black community?
Research indicates that African American marriage rates have decreased, but the birth rate has not. This is due to the high age of first marriage for many African Americans, who marry at younger ages than White Americans. The average age of marriage for black women with a high school degree is 21. 8 years, compared to 20. 8 years for white women. Fewer labor force opportunities and a decline in real earnings for black males since 1960 are also recognized as sources of increasing marital instability. This has led to a pool of fewer desirable male partners and more divorces.
One type of marriage that has declined is shotgun marriage, which is documented by the number of out-of-wedlock births. Between 1965 and 1989, three-quarters of white out-of-wedlock births and three-fifths of black out-of-wedlock births could be explained by situations where the parents would have married in the past. Cultural norms have since changed, giving women and men more agency to decide whether or when they should get married.
What race has the most active fathers?
This study investigates the variation in father engagement levels, including verbal stimulation, caregiving, and physical play, across race/ethnicity. The research, which included 5, 089 infants and their families from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study – Birth Cohort (ECLS-B), found that African American and Latino fathers had higher levels of engagement in caregiving and physical play activities than White fathers.
However, there were no differences in verbal stimulation activities across race/ethnicity. Fathers’ education (college level) predicted more verbally stimulating activities, while fathers’ report of couple conflict predicted less caregiving and physical play.
The overall models did not differ by race/ethnicity, except for physical play. African American mothers with high levels of depressive symptoms had partners who engaged in more physical play than White mothers with high levels of depressive symptoms. This study aims to address the lack of representation of minority backgrounds in parenting studies, which are dominated by research on mother-child interactions in majority two-parent White families. The study aims to correct these omissions and provide more research on parenting of infants by minority fathers.
What percentage of Black men have kids?
The proportion of Hispanic men who have fathered a child at some point in their lives is greater than that of non-Hispanic White and non-Hispanic Asian men, and comparable to that of non-Hispanic Black men (46. 0).
Why are there so many single mothers in Africa?
The region’s increasing prevalence of single motherhood is largely attributable to a range of socio-economic factors, including educational attainment, employment mobility, gendered migration patterns, poverty, a shortage of marriageable men, the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and a decline in early and arranged marriages.
What race is most likely to be single?
The unmarried sex ratio in the United States varies by race and Hispanic origin, with the highest ratios observed in states like Alaska and New Mexico. The Black or African American population had a 79. 8 unmarried sex ratio, while the Hispanic population had a 100. 1 ratio. The 30-to-34 age group had the highest ratio at nearly 121 men to 100 women, likely due to men having a higher median age at first marriage (30. 1) than women (28. 2). This suggests that men typically marry later, making them more available to marry at younger ages.
What race has the highest rate of single mothers?
The prevalence of single motherhood among children exhibits variation across ethno-racial lines. During the period between 1995 and 2018, the highest prevalence was observed among Black children, followed by Latino children and then White children.

Black mothers make poor choices. Whenever I get frustrated or upset with my mom, people tell me to take my anger out on my dad since he was never there for me. But I always respond by saying (Well, you’re or she’s the one who chose him as my father. You knew he had a daughter before you had me. You knew he didn’t take care of his daughter before I was born. Not only did you make a mistake when you had me, but you made a second mistake and had a second baby by him.) Black women want sympathy for crap that they bring on themselves. It’s sad. Make better choices in men. Black women love bringing their kids into toxic situations and struggle. And as black children get older, black women are ready to kick their kids out into even more struggle. Smh.
1) Bad choices in men 2) Men don’t want drama 3) Men don’t want too much baggage 4) Most Black women feel at least equal to men 5) Black women don’t submit 6) Women in general have problems of men fathering their children 7) Black men dating other races than black women 8) Black women waiting on another black man as their mate 9) Black women feel everything they bring to the table MUST be accepted 10) Black women are looked upon by most black males as the worst gender/race combination
I once lived in an apartment run by a Black Church. The people living in this complex were supposed to be screened and dedicated to a repentant life style. I would hate to see who they were rejecting. I befriended a 12 year old boy being raised by a single mother. He was totally literate. When he asked where I went in the morning, I replied “To work” He asked “Why?” “To pay my bills” He responded “But thats what welfare is for!” I explained to him that welfare is meant to be a temporary situation and one is supposed to get back on their feet. His mother chewed me out warning me not to ever impose my values on her son ever again! In another case, I gave a woman a ride to the post office. Nothing happened. At 2 am, she knocked on my door wearing a T shirt with nothing else on underneath. She asked for a cup of laundry detergent asking if she could come in. I gave her a box of TIDE and sent her on her way. She left angry and in a huff.
I divorced my first husband because he was emotionally stunted and not faithful. Despite this I did not feel it was open season for ex bashing as he…though imperfect…was still the father of our children. I didn’t take him to the cleaners financially either. We didn’t use the kids as weapons and he was free to have a relationship with them. So I don’t agree with your submissive bullcrap. As a woman you simply can’t afford to be submissive because the men are provider shit has totally gone out the window. Both men and women have to empower each other . If you can’t stick around to raise an inevitable child… then keep it in your pants. That’s the problem. Men are not keeping it in their pants and neither are some women. If the relationship isn’t gonna be permanent…use some birthcontrol or self control. These babies aren’t accidents unless you took the steps to not conceive them. If you don’t love someone…don’t sleep with them. Quit blaming your women for the single mom problem. And then try sticking around a bit.
Black women need to know black men is not the only men god created and what ever man u fall in love with first he love and respects god because then he’ll know what the word says about becoming one with his wife and how to treat her and love her. Two if that man has been raised by a God fearing woman in a single household his first teaching will be God comes first therefore the word of God teaches him what he needs to be and teaches a male child about women. Being that a woman is children’s first teacher teaching discipline independent thinking men hard working and loving and order he will love and respect his mother and know how treat his wife, facing challenge in life with no fear knowing he writes his destiny by making good choices and learning from mistakes. All human make mistakes all
Being married to a black woman shows me exactly why it’s so many single mothers. Can’t raise your kids with them because they don’t understand how to prevent. I give you an example. My son does not listen to both of us. He is 4 years old and when we tell him to clean up his toys, he says no. My solution is to whoop him for talking back and refusing to do what we tell him. She says why do that when he doesn’t know what he’s getting beat for. I told her if we tell him 20 times to do something and he says no then he clearly would know why he’s getting beat. My wife solution to the problem is to keep telling him to pick them up. He ends up not doing it and she cleans them up. I told her if he doesn’t listen to us then what do you think will happen when he grows up. She still thinks it’s a bad idea to beat him. Its infuriating knowing that if left up to her my son will most definitely end up in prison
Love, dignity and consideration and everything you do for each other and the way love grows to a fortress. Hatred, aggression, vices and the unit becomes a self perpetuating cesspool And it’s a choice. A clear cut choice that men are avoiding leaving dispossessed sons and daughters who will continue perpetuating the evil. Very sad
What I have seen is that “men” in general do not stay with loud mouth head snapping disrespectful women regardless of race….I have seen in some rural communities that are not indoctrine by pop culture (that sensational lize disrespectful behavior in music, tv etc) the black women have a higher rate of success in having a man. It also seems there’s a practice of old fashion values of respect that the big city women have lost in this me generation. Thank you for another good article
ITS PART OF THE CURSES OF TMH,WHY WOULDNT YOU MENTION THAT FIRST AND FOREMOST AS A ISRAELITE? Deuteronomy 28:54So that the man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the remnant of his children which he shall leave:
Lol out-of-control women! Are you serious.. Why does it sound like you’re holding accountable the women, that stay to raise the children at her best ability. Then holding the man that’s a absent father accountable? For leaving a woman to raise children on her own? You people misogynistic men are sick!
@5:07: I agree the destruction of the black family is done on purpose, but has little to do with slavery. This is because, in 1960 black families were in far better shape than today. Thomas Sowell has pointed out that a good analysis tool is to compare the state of black families 100 years after slavery, vs.50 years after LBJ and the installation of the welfare state.
Why would someone say it’s the women’s fault that the reason blk men are not in the home. That’s not fair. A almost whole race of men that don’t marry the women they father children with and it’s because the women are out of control, what? You give a lot of great advice Mr Dowell on your articles, but I think your wrong on this one. I would never think you would ever say something like that. There are a lot of blk men out of control and with you being blk, you know there is no excuse for blk men to just leave the home at the alarming rate that they do.
People like to make it a BM vs. BW situation, but it’s really systemic plots to pit us against each other. According to pastor Dowell’s teaching, a man should be the head of the house;provide, lead, protect. But it’s just as hard to follow as to lead. It requires trust. If TMH had never proven himself to you, you’d have a big problem believing in him. And are women not instructed to submit themselves to their husbands as to Christ? So what happens when there are no “men” worth putting your trust in? That is what the “independent” women of today are bred from. According to pastor Dowell, a man can put away a woman and a woman can’t really leave a man (he’s even encouraged it in several articles). That creates an imbalance, no? I can empathize with a man’s frustration at having his place subverted, but realize WHO is actually subverting your position. It isn’t the woman (all most women want is a man worth following). So why then are we promoting this false BM vs. BW dichotomy? I think that rather than going the path of least resistance (BM finding foreign wives, BW swearing off BM and finding men of other races), we should focus on mutual healing of OUR family structure. Otherwise, the problem persists and we feed the goals of our true enemy. Just my thoughts, though.
I’m subscribing to this website from the word “go”. All I had to hear were this man’s first few words, & I knew I was into something. He’s both articulate & common sense, simultaneously. I’m in the #Caribbean, fixing to make a stateside trip for a gig economy project. I’ve begun dating Afro-#Caribbean women (#Haiti, #DominicanRepublic), because they’re my favorites for a lifetime project relationship. But I’m also wide open to whatever comes along. Unfortunately, the U. S. monopolizes the cultural world, which translates to negative trends even outside the U. S., including the dating scene, whether folks want to believe it or not. We must be culturally aware, of what’s going on, if we expect to survive in this deteriorating, pre-apocalyptic rat race. Again, this man’s message packs a wallop. Let’s hear more of his common sense/articulate preaching for our collective good.
“The 3 6s” = “F#%$ing, Food, and Flash/Fun”. “Pimpology. Hypocritical Pimpology” You’ll have an elder black male talk Bible rules, and be a sex fiend – and teach this. Just because a man has a nice job, and a good car doesn’t mean you can afford 2-3 families and households. Somebody is going to get less $, clothes, support, and less of a dad. Look at our entertainment, every artist a playa hipster. This is by design.
It has been done on purpose! Not just black men though, I see it happening to all families, at least in this country. It seems like they want to split families up. I’m a single mother of five, single though because their father died. I have two boys, and I worry about them not having a father. What does help though, is being aware of what is happening. Being aware of the feminist movement and what it is doing to families. I’m wide awake, so my boys do have that advantage.
The only thing I disagree with you about is Married with Children, as you get older and look back on that show, and I watch it faithfully, they were teaching men lesson on what the mentality of the basic marriage is, how the wife thinks of you, how the family sees you. Disposable, the money machine, the dud. It was comedic sarcasm. Indirect teaching. They were preparing those that could understand, for the evolution of marriage as time move towards these modern times today.
Pastor Dowell, I apologize for not being on the topic of discussion, I am sitting here perusal thyneigbor.tv those that call themselves Jews are in Ethiopia aiding the impoverish Israelites of Ethiopia calling them their brothers but for the rest of the true Israelites such as those that were brought to the Americas during the Atlantic slave trade they don’t acknowledge. They are giving the notion that Queen Sheba was black that is why the Ethiopian Jews are black . My knock against that is that the seed of the father predominantly determine the genetics of the children . My point is those people are black and if Solomon was a white man don’t you think that those people would be of a lighter skin color. To add fuel to the fire, did King Solomon and Queen Sheba only had one son? So, if my history is correct, his seed mixed with the Ethiopians am I correct? If so, that blood was washed away by the blood of the Ethiopians which are gentiles eons ago.
Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. Matthew 19:4-6 He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” Matthew 18:1-35 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, … Hebrews 13:4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. Colossians 3:18-19 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. Ephesians 5:22-33 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
Do you even “read” the Bible… but yet are calling yourself a PASTOR? You mean that you did not know that these curses IDENTITY “true” Israel??? There is no room for “opinions” when you actually study and understand the scriptures. Deuteronomy 28:54, So that the man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the remnant of his children which he shall LEAVE… This says it all, my friend. This is happening to ONE nation and ONE nation only, and the Bible spells it all out. Please study it some time.
I honestly didn’t know things was like that in the USA for black Americans. I gave notice that when black Americans says black women and men they are only referring to black Americans, so that’s why I’ve clicked the link. Thanks goodness the black men and women in my country here gets along well that’s why you’d never find a article on utube from any black women in my country dissing black men. I think the reasons things are like this for black Americans is because they had never learnt to be on code. Have you noticed that every other races around you guys have a code. Have you noticed that blacks in Europe have a code too and the Caribbean also, not to mention the continent Africa, so why black Americans seen each other as enemies. Black American women, listen this, you cannot be the woman you should be without your man and fir black American men, think wisely, you will never be the man you should be without your women because one is the head and the other the heart.
They will come for child support regardless of if you’re married or if you had the children with birth certificates. Also they will come and enforce upon you marriage even if you did not get a license with them. You see there’s a thing called a thority and there are a couple different ways for it to take affect the one you’re talking about it through contract however there is another called Force and they will exercise their overwhelming Force upon you to grant them the authority to force these things upon you. They don’t give a flying rat’s behind about your prenups or your personal contracts if the woman’s Fifi’s are hurt
My Humble Take: What most simps, feminist fe/males, white-knights, betas and conservative guys fail to realize: bad boys provide excitement, novelty, unpredictability and fun (fear, roller-coaster drama) to a new level. In other words, stability and commitment (no longer) won’t cut it for today’s 🦄. Why is that? Before she was your girlfriend, wife or lover, she already had been “run through” so many guys. And each time she slept with someone (both wo/men), she lost a part of her soul. In other words, she is no longer able to have emotional attachment in a healthy or committed way. Her 1st Take: “My advice to women is date all of them: the bad boys, the cool boys, the commitment-phobic boys, the crazy boys. But do not marry them. The things that make the bad boys sexy do not make them good husbands. When it comes time to settle down, find someone who wants an equal partner. Someone who thinks women should be smart, opinionated and ambitious. Someone who values fairness and expects or, even better, wants to do his share in the home. These men exist and, trust me, over time, nothing is sexier.” Yours sincerely, Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer of Facebook Her 2nd Take: “My music is always going to make a woman feel like a bad bitch. When you make a woman feel like she’s the baddest bitch in the room, to me, that’s female empowerment.” Decently yours, Cardi B. The Rational Male Series by Rollo Tomassi The Manipulated Man by Esther Vilar Anatomy of Female Power by Chinweizu Ibekwe Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars: An Introductory Programing Manual by Anonymous Isaiah 3:12 Childish leaders oppress my people, and women rule over them.
Matriarchy is the way. No submission, no overlords, no Western ideologies. Patriarchy came from the Catholic Church. Matriarchy comes from nature. The head of the House, house means lineage, is the creator mother. But since we lived in villages with our clans, there was only one head, the oldest living mother and she appointed her sons as grand counsel. This is how it was in ancient Egypt when the Pharoah (Pharo Aah, Per Aah, Elo Ah) chose her king. The proof is in the PharoAh’s face on the Sphinx. Per Aah means High House, Hus Band mean House Binder. Mother is the High House and her king keeps the house, lineage, clan, village, fortress together or bound (binder). High house also refers to the moon as a woman’s cycles are in tuned with the moon’s cycles. Before the catholic Gregorian calendars we were on a 28 days of 13 months calendar.
I thought I was going to agree with this article but this guy is just off the rails! I consider myself leaning more conservative but I could not disagree more with this guy. Basically his whole point is that mean can’t put up with these type of women? This guy’s reasoning is garbage. He points towards feminism and the way that women are raised but fails to acknowledge that that’s a societal thing (it’s happening to all women in the us because we are the same country and with media we’re more culturally connected than ever before). Why don’t we see the single mother rate with white people? Or Hispanics? Or Asians? Is he saying that black women just suck? I’m sorry but if a MAN leaves his kids and wife then the blame goes towards him (especially when you’re looking at the statistics that almost 80% of black families have only 1 parent). I don’t live in a largely black community so I haven’t experienced this so this is just my personal opinion based of common sense. If someone can give me an actual reason as to why so many black moms are terrible to be with then please enlighten me
