Why Is Rigid Parenting Wrong?

Strict parenting is a parenting style that can lead to well-behaved, goal-driven children but often hampers autonomy and self-determination. It is characterized by demanding behavior but not responsiveness to emotional needs, which can result in negative outcomes such as lower academic achievement, lower life satisfaction, increased anxiety and depression, and strained parent-child relationships.

Strict parenting also has the potential to create resistance to taking responsibility for oneself, as harsh limits may trigger a resistance to taking responsibility for oneself. This can lead to lower academic achievement, lower life satisfaction, increased anxiety and depression, and a disadvantage in developing social skills for later life.

In addition to these negative effects, strict parenting can also lead to strained parent-child relationships, diminished self-esteem, rebellion, and limited emotional growth. Strict parents are often cold, unresponsive, and unsupportive to their children, with their rules often being overly strict and arbitrary. They may take life too seriously, constantly doubt themselves, and experience burnout and chronic fatigue syndrome.

In conclusion, strict parenting can have both positive and negative effects on a child’s upbringing. While it can lead to well-behaved children, it can also lead to negative outcomes such as lower academic achievement, decreased life satisfaction, increased anxiety and depression, and strained parent-child relationships. It is essential to understand the factors that contribute to the negative effects of strict parenting and find healthier ways to raise children.

Are moms more strict than dads?

A study reveals that half of mothers tend to be overprotective, while 38 of fathers tend to give too much freedom. Mothers are more likely to give in too quickly, while fathers stick to their guns too much. There are modest differences in praise or criticism given by parents: 23 of fathers criticize their children too much, while 29 of mothers praise them too much. There are no significant differences between mothers and fathers on whether they push their children too hard or not hard enough, but mothers are slightly more likely to say neither fits their parenting style.

Mothers are more likely to raise their children in a very or somewhat different way compared to how they were raised, while fathers are more likely to raise their kids very or somewhat similarly to how they were raised.

What is the least strict parenting style?

Permissive parents are warm, nurturing, and have minimal expectations. They impose limited rules on their children, allowing them to figure things out for themselves. This low level of expectation results in rare uses of discipline and acts more like friends than parents. However, these rules can lead to unhealthy eating habits, increased risks for obesity, and other health problems later in life. Permissive children have a lot of freedom, such as bedtime, homework, and screen time, but may also develop negative habits due to lack of guidance on moderation.

Despite having some self-esteem and social skills, permissive children can be impulsive, demanding, selfish, and lack self-regulation. On the other hand, uninvolved parents fulfill their children’s basic needs while remaining detached from their life. They offer little nurturing and have little or no expectations of their children.

What is toxic parenting?

A toxic parent creates an unhealthy environment for their child through negative behaviors such as constant criticism, manipulation, emotional neglect, or physical abuse. This results in a harmful and unhealthy environment for the child.

What are the disadvantages of strict parenting?

What are the disadvantages of strict parenting?

Authoritarian parenting is a strict style of parenting that places high expectations on children, setting rigid rules without explanation and expecting obedience without question or severe punishment. This approach can lead to emotional and behavioral problems, poor social and decision-making skills, depression, anxiety, aggression, a strong sense of failure, low self-esteem, and a more open-minded attitude towards suicide.

Research shows that while boundaries are beneficial, authoritarian parenting can have negative effects on children, including emotional and behavioral problems, poor social and decision-making skills, depression, anxiety, aggression, and low self-esteem.

Is it good to have strict parents?

Research indicates that strict parenting can have some benefits, but long-term risks often outweigh the benefits. Parenting is a challenging job, and constructive parenting styles often don’t come naturally. Parents must navigate setting expectations, consequences, and responsibilities to foster their child’s growth into a well-rounded adult. Some parents focus on leniency, while others focus on control and obedience. While strict parenting can be beneficial in some ways, it often has negative effects.

What happens when your parents are too strict?

Strict parenting can lead to more behavioral problems and less initiative in children, as well as a higher likelihood of raising disrespectful and delinquent children. While strict parents may temporarily enforce their rules, over-strict parenting can create negative outcomes. Authoritarian parenting, which is strict and rigid, is often associated with negative outcomes, as it is often “because I said so” and is not open to discussion or hearing the child’s point of view. Therefore, it is crucial for parents to be mindful of their parenting style and approach to ensure their children’s well-being.

How does having strict parents affect a child?

A study by Sotheara found that strict parents and violent parenting can lead to sleep deprivation, eating disorders, anxiety, low self-esteem, and poor academic performance in children. These children may change their thinking, eat more, sleep more, and perform worse at school. Some kids even have the courage to talk to their parents, but their parents often mock them, worsening the situation. A new coping mechanism for teenagers dealing with home trouble is finding support on social media among peers.

A 2015 study by researchers at the Royal University of Phnom Penh found that over 60% of students and faculty members lived with depression or anxiety, with some reporting strict parenting as the cause.

Can overly strict parents cause trauma?

Can overly strict parents cause trauma?

Authoritarian parenting can be both abusive and detrimental to children. While not all strict parents are abusive, extreme cases can lead to emotional and psychological harm. In extreme cases, overly strict parenting can cause complex post-traumatic stress disorder (c-PTSD), similar to those who have experienced physical or sexual abuse.

Authoritarian parenting can worsen behavior problems, especially severe ones. Studies show that harsh discipline and psychological control can cause behavior to worsen, even if the child is outwardly well-behaved. Additionally, strict parents can impair the development of social competence in their children, leading to lower ratings from teachers, hostile attribution bias, aggression, bullying, and social withdrawal. It is crucial to address these issues to ensure the well-being and development of children.

Can you have trauma from strict parents?

Strict parenting can sometimes lead to trauma, as some parents may withhold basic needs from their children out of punishment, resulting in emotional impact. While not all strict parents are abusive, overly strict parenting can cause complex post-traumatic stress disorder (c-PTSD) similar to those who have experienced physical or sexual abuse. Additionally, authoritarian parenting can worsen behavior problems, especially severe ones. Studies have shown that harsh discipline and psychological control can cause behavior to worsen, even if the child is outwardly well-behaved.

While not all strict parents are abusive, extreme cases of overly strict parenting can result in severe behavioral issues. Therefore, it is crucial for parents to be aware of the potential consequences of their parenting style.

What mental illness do strict parents have?

What mental illness do strict parents have?

This study supports the hypothesis that rumination plays a mediating role between harsh parenting and adolescent depression. Rumination occurs when individuals experience negative life events, leading to a gap between reality and expectations, leading to repetitive reflection on the causes and consequences of negative events. This can result in a weakened ability to understand others, excessively high expectations, and a heightened sense of disappointment in life.

Victimization also plays a mediating role between harsh parenting and adolescent depression. Adolescents who grow up with warm and affectionate parenting styles are more likely to develop mature emotional regulation and adhere to normative moral standards, leading to healthier peer relationships and lower rates of victimization. Harsh parenting may blur appropriate behaviors and boundaries in social interactions, resulting in poor social skills, emotional understanding, and regulation abilities.

Rumination and victimization play a chain mediating role between harsh parenting and adolescent depression. This finding aligns with the resource allocation theory, suggesting that rumination makes individuals excessively sensitive in their evaluations and perceptions of others, potentially influencing their coping strategies and resulting in misguided responses to others’ behavior and intentions. This can impact their acceptance and support among peers, making them more susceptible to attacks and harm.

Can strict parents cause mental health issues?

Research has shown that family and social risk factors, such as harsh parenting and victimization, can significantly predict adolescent depression. Depression is a major disease burden among adolescents, posing various risks such as suicide, poor academic performance, substance abuse, and strained parent-child relationships. According to Beck’s cognitive model of depression, depression arises from negative, pessimistic, and irrational patterns of thought, leading to negative views about one’s abilities, worth, and attractiveness.

Harsh parenting, which includes physical aggression, verbal aggression, and compulsive/controlling behaviors, is often adopted by parents when dissatisfied with their children’s performance or mistakes. These behaviors are often accompanied by parents’ negative emotions and attitudes towards their teenagers, such as apathy, anger, and insensitivity. Multiple studies have shown a correlation between harsh parenting and negative cognitive patterns in adolescents, leading to the development of a negative coping style that focuses on processing threatening or negative information.

Harsh parenting may serve as a familial risk factor for adolescent depression, as children who experience harsh parenting may repeat scenes of abuse in their minds, further triggering depression symptoms such as anxiety, despair, and helplessness. However, there is a lack of research exploring the mechanism of adolescent depression in the context of adverse family upbringing from a Chinese cultural perspective.

The study aims to comprehensively examine the impact mechanisms of both family and individual factors on adolescent depression by integrating harsh parenting, rumination, victimization, and adolescent depression into a chain-mediated model.

Hypothesis 1 is proposed: harsh parenting positively affects adolescent depression.

  • I had incredibly strict and sheltering parents growing up. I was home schooled, home churched, wasn’t allowed to listen to secular music, couldn’t date and I wasn’t allowed to make any of my own decisions. So when I left at 17, I went absolutely crazy. Became addicted to drugs and self destructive behavior. Until I met my wife at 19. I’ve been improving ever since. Now that I have my own kids I am raising them totally different than I was, much like the “authoritative parenting” you described. So far they’re turning out great! I still struggle with anxiety and depression, but every day I get a little better, and if you had a similar experience and are struggling, so can you 🙂

  • When I grow up I never want my children to go through what I do. Because my parents feel like as if it is their job to emotionally break their children. I don’t want my children to feel as if they can’t talk to me about things. I don’t want them to be afraid to be in the same room as me.I want them to be able to lean from their mistakes instead of fearing being hit for it.

  • What I have learnt from my semi strict parents: How to use the shortcut that closes all your tabs in one second. How to properly use private search and history clearing. How to hide you personal email so they can’t spy on your conversations. How to quietly listen to music when your stressed so they don’t come in and make you more stressed.

  • My parent yells at me everyday, yells at me for crying, tells me to stand up for myself when I never can thanks to them, teaches me how to lie, always says that they respect my opinion when they never do, and so much other stuff. And my parent wonders why I hate talking to people and why emotions are hard for me to control. She somehow believed me when I told her Im not depressed (“funny” enough I have depression and also yes I know the different meaning of “depressed” and “depression” ok?) and she believes me anytime I say that I’m happy when I’m sad. I’m tired right now so I don’t want to continue this.

  • I have semi-strict parents. My dad is quick to anger, and when I do the slightest thing wrong (aka crying) I get grounded for a week. My mom on the other hand, doesn’t ground me, but discusses what I did wrong and how to not do it again. If I had to only live with one of my parents, I’d choose my mom anytime

  • I remember there’s a difference between being strict and disciplining. I’ve met some kids that their parents did nothing in their life (besides provide the basic necessities and make sure they’re doing good in school) and they sent them to school we’re attending a military school to teach them discipline all that even though it didn’t do anything and they just were pissed off at their parents even more.

  • This is a real history: When i was younger my mom beated the crap out of me because i had a youtube website(with less then 10 subscribers)and i made a joke about my grandfather needing money for a prostate surgery(stupid children joke that barely no one saw)she beat me with her hands, with her sandals, choked me and even throw me towards the wall making me hit my head really hard, and guess what i started bleeding but even with that she told me to go study to the test i had on the other day. on the other day she put some bandage around my head gave me some painkiller and send me to school with a letter to my teacher and the principal saying that i hurted my head in the doorknob because i slipped on the wet floor. She tolds all her friends(every women on the street about it)and guess what again all of then tough i was the bad guy on the history Now i not only pray every day to be able to live till i turn 18 because i want to go the hell away from here(Brazil)and start over a new life on Canada because i want to be far as possible from her

  • Thanks Life Noggin, I really hope this can teach parents, I’ll be honest I’m a 12 year old girl. Yes really, I spend a lot of my time on the internet and I’m always afraid to admit my age as people online think I’m just a spoiled brat. Off topic I’ve always lived with my mom and well.. She’s an alcoholic and I’ve just accepted this, until I was 10, I learned the danger of alcohol and the impacts it has of children.. like me and because I’ve gone through this so much I can notice the earliest signs of someone becoming drunk, even before anyone else can notice and when I say something their like “Oh she’s just tired and bored” and guess what? She’s drunk 1 hour later. But I’ve had some moments from her that I will never forget, one time she literally took me to the alcohol store and I told my nan that she took me to the store, she caught up to my mom and right when we were about to leave after getting the stuff my nan pulled up and wanted me to get in her car, obviously I wanted to go with my nan but my mom tried to convince me to stay, I eventually went with my nan and I can’t remember the rest.. sorry but I go through that stuff a lot or she yells at me to sleep at like 6pm, just recently I’ve started to realize that.. this is my life.. this is how I live and how I will most likely remember it.. I really hope no future parents do this to their children and for those that are in a similar spot like me.. go with your other parents, talk with the person drinking and if they don’t listen as a last resort, call Child Protection Services, it will be hard but if its all you got you should really do it.

  • What strict parents think they teach us: • Discipline • Obedience What strict parents do teach us: • How to listen for footsteps • How to find the best hiding places for devices • How to lie well • How to zone out lectures • How to pretend to sleep/work Edit: Yo!!!! Look at these likes! Thanks! 900?! What?!

  • My life living with strict parents: • was never allowed to go off my street when outside by myself, even if I’m just goin to a friends house a street over. • Always berated for not getting the “best score” or being “top in the class” • Constantly being compared to others • Getting yelled at for petty things that could easily be solved • Not being allowed to talk back, even if I have a valid argument or point in a conversation • Having parents that think the concept of mental health is taboo Theres a lot but this is just a generalization of what goes on.

  • I had 2 different ways of growing up. With my mother and stepfather it was horrible punishes that mentally drained me, while I was rarely never abused physically the mental abuse was nonstop. Then when I went to my dads I saw how real parenting worked and was barely punished the way I was at my mothers. In the end I have a stepdaughter and I was taught 2 ways, what NOT to do and what works and I am forever thankful for my dad showing me the right way.

  • Things my parents wanted me to learn 1- discipline 2-responsibility 3-obedience 4-good grades Things I actually learned from my parents 1- how to be a best liar 2- how to hold tears, when someone is using a psychical pressure on me 3- better hearing skills (you always have to be ready for them coming into your room) 4- how to hide things such as phone, money and diaries 5- how to hide apps in your phone, clear your search history and so go on 6- how to find good excuses, if you want to go to the doctor or need to go to the psychologists 7- low self confidence, trust issues, trying to find that warm love in random people and the last one- don’t really know how to love someone, because never felt that love.

  • my life is worst, not just my strict parents, everything, my life was superiorly great until everything change over the years, even today I cant even finish my school stuff at google classroom, lack of intelligence, and very, very low on self-esteem, I could even find a bit of single luck to make all the troubles away, but now I need your help on how to keep up so my life wont be unfair

  • This is how my mom raised me: Ok so I have my freedom and a phone and my own privacy. My mom always taught me to be independent like cooking, going out on my own, eating healthy, not wasting money and being respectful. I was also raised to have high expectations for myself and not ruin everything so now I am a good person who can take care of myself

  • I had a strict mum and step dad, and I was emotionally and mentally abused, luckily there was no physical abuse. Just over a month ago we got into a fight, at that time my mental health was really bad to the point I developed a bit of anxiety. Literally when I was having a severe anxiety attack they continued to yell at me and make me sound like a bad person and things like that, then 2 nights later they kicked me out of the house and sent me to another state to live with my dad. I had to leave my boyfriend friends and memories behind, but there was one positive side to the note, my dad and step mum respects me and wants to fix my mental health into a good healthy one, they don’t yell at me, put pressure on me, hurt my feelings, or make me feel worthless. And within most of march, I felt like there is a place for me to feel safe and not unhappy. For those out there with strict parents, things will get better, even if it means to leave everything behind and start a fresh new life.

  • I have one memory I will never forget. I’m homeschooled and have been for awhile. So my mom helped me a lot when I was younger. I have this one memory I will never forget, I was struggling in math and was really confused and didn’t know what to do. So she resulted to intensely spanking me. It definitely still haunts me.

  • My mom was lecturing my two brothers about some thing and then she brought this up: “Some parents are so cruel that they can drop off children in human banks” And I was like what the fu- What she meant was an foster home But instead she said something very dehumanizing and controversial and aegis If I were to put what she said in a nutshell and better explained it would be like this A child cannot be respected as a person and can only be treated as an object until he or she is an adult and that’s when one can be respected as a human And also that got me thinking If a child is an object like money in there really was a “child bank” (Child bank is something that I never thought I’d ever have to say in my life) then that means that you could trade in a 12-year-old for12 newborn babies or you could have a loan of a child That’s a really weird analogy Mom You should’ve said foster home-

  • Recalling my… Experience with strict parents, I never really developed much if a bond to them due to fearing them. I decided to help them out, but it led to me becoming even worse than before. I don’t talk to them much or tell them much either. Goes to show the effects of strict parenting on children. Then there comes the effects on their social, emotional and even physical health. Parents shouldn’t be doing all this just to make their kids listen. They should spend time with them, talk to them and develop a bond not associated with fear. Thank you Blocko for creating and sharing this article with us all. Hope to see more content soon

  • Me: Mom… My neck hurts.. like a lot. Mom: wELL thAT’s bECauSe yOu aRE aLWaYs oN youR gOdDamN pHoNe Well excuse me Mom I was born with a condition called Tortocolis which makes your head slanted one way. Makes your neck, shoulder blades, spine, and shoulders really tight and stuff. And my mom says it’s because I’m on my phone all day. I’ve lived with neck and back pain every day of my life. Wow thanks mom

  • My mother is a single parent never and I stress NEVER hit me or even got mad at me…. And I with all regards turned out fine… Never had a single fight in my school life… No social problems so I would say that talking and telling your kids what’s good or bad is better then being angry or hitting them

  • My parents are like a mix of strict and chill. I have my freedoms and restrictions. Admittedly they sometimes shelter me a little too much. They did spank me when I was younger. They stopped when I was 8 years old, where I was old enough to just talk about what I’ve done and stuff. It worked for me personally. But every child is different.

  • My mom complains when I turn of the lights or turn down the tv so I can sleep, even though I have school or a test the next day. She says that because English is my first language, anything lower than a 95% grade in English class is the same as a 0% grade. But my dad is chill, so at least I have that.

  • Dads be like: *looks around* Look at me while i’m talking to you! *Looks into eyes* Are you glaring at me?! *Looks at face* Fix your face, why are you mad?! *Looks sad* Stop being a baby! *Looks mad* Why are you looking at me like that?! Are you tougher?! *Looks normal* Why are you staring into space?! *Does nothing at all* Are you even listening?!

  • I agree with what they said. I have extremely strict parents. And here are the things he said which are true about me: 1. Suffer from low Self-Esteem 2. More rebellious 3. Emotional problems like Depression 4. More aggressive 5. Lower cognitive abilities 6. More negative relationships with parents What’s not true though is that I’m a bully. I am kind on the inside, and also I’m an introvert lol, there’s no way I can be both an introvert and a bully at the same time. Also I don’t have more ‘antisocial behaviour’.

  • My exprience of strict parenting *told me since childhood that friends can not be trusted *Scolds me for not being social *don’t appload when I score high in a practice test *make it a big issue when I don’t score high *Mother continously said parents are never wrong, yet proved my Maternal grandmoter wrong several times *cuts off conversation whenever I do something wrong,

  • All i can mostly remember from my childhood was being yelled at for no reason and being hit for stupid reasons, meanwhile my dads girlfriends kids can get away with anything they want. Believe me, i became scared of the saying “dont cry or i’ll give you something to cry about” Im in high school and im still scared of my dad

  • Ten things I have learnt/have experienced due strict parenting : 1. Spend as much time in your room as you possibly can to avoid your parents shouting at you for something you didn’t even do 2. How to have all kinds of anxiety 3. Negative thoughts and low self esteem 4. How to not be confident in your on home 5. Not having many friends because you think (or know) that your parents will kick them out of the house 6. Finding as much stuff to do in your room so that you don’t have to go out 7. How to quietly cry yourself to sleep 8. Constant headaches caused by crying too much, stress, and anything related to depression 9. Getting bullied in school because you have no friends 10. How to master the art of lying And I’m sure I’m gonna have some new experiences so yay me.

  • Parents : Yell at their kid, complain about them right in front of them, mock them for their interests and hobbies, spank them, take away their things, not let them make their own decisions, pretty much making it clear they’re not allowed to be themselves and hide from them What the parents think they’re doing to their kid : Disciplining them, teaching them to behave What they’re actually doing : making the kid antisocial, low self-esteem, poor mental health, indecisive, teach them to lie on the spot, hear for foot steps, hide their things, their opinions, and their choices What the parents think is causing them : tHoSe DaMn article gAmEs AnD tHaT dAmN pHoNe

  • My dad would spank me for alot of stuff, so when he left, I could finally express my hate. I am a teengager, I get it, so I do have alot of emotions which make me kinda unpleasant, but I blame it on him. I ended up getting PTSD, which made me constantly get dark flashbacks, made me have low self esteem, and I am super anti-social, even though teens don’t like socializing. But I end up to the point that if I have to go out, I will wear a black mask, a black hoodie, basically all black, and talk to no one. And I am kinda rebelious even though I have always followed rules, but instead it is just muffled. And this thing could lead to depression, which is NOT what I ever pictured in my life, and, it hasn’t been tested yet, but I think I developed social anxiety. soo yeah. Parents. I know I’m just some emo teen, but don’t use a parenting style like that, or you will get kids that end up like a unmotivated, depressed teenager like me… (‘ ‘) I seriously pushed myself to even type this story for people to hear. Edit: I am much happier now than I was 2 years ago.

  • My parents are not strict. At the age of 12, they let me use the internet as long as I want. They still taught me which not to do in the internet. I explored the internet freely and my english skills got developed through it, I am a Filipino boi. I also developed some other skills because of the internet. I have been studying animation by myself. So, what is my point here? I am saying that my parents let me explore life(Im not talking about only letting me surf the internet of course) while teaching me what the rights and wrongs are. And because they let me do that, I learned a lot. The memes are the one that shaped my humor. I did’nt grow up liking any Filipino meme cultures, so I grew up with (I guess American culture). In short, being given a little bit of freedom rocks. Don’t think my parents are reckless or anything. They are like the elders of wisdom or something. I talk to them and eventually learn something about life.

  • Well I experienced almost everything talked about here. I was beaten, yelled at, criticized, manipulated, gaslit and neglected for most of my very early life. Now I’m very antisocial, have low self esteem, have no genuine connections to anyone in my life,I have a non existent relationship with my parents which makes it hard to live with them and all the bad mental health problems (depression, anxiety etc). Now the stress of university is adding up and I feel like I just wanna disappear. It’s getting harder to tolerate them every single day knowing that They’re the ones that made me like this.

  • 22 year old, unemployed, no skills to find a job. Been kept in a bubble all my life by my parents who controlled so many aspects of my life, no real friend group cause everytime they asked me out, my parents would say “No” so they didnt bother asking again. I am Indian so moving out isn’t an option for me, I feel trapped here meanwhile my old schoolmates achieving their dreams meanwhile i had to bury mine, no matter what i wanted to do, I always had to “ask permission”. I was a good lapdog for my parents in my teenage years, never questioned them or never rebelled because i trusted them and thought they are doing this for my good, now that I got older, I understand what my parents have done, they are the cause of my breakup of my 2 year relationship because my GF had more “freedom” than me which didn’t sit well with them. I feel like an empty shell of a person, I still have dreams and ambition but I dont know where to start, upon that I fucked myself over by dropping out of college due to me being sick of my parents which inturn would’ve been a blessing if I had attended it, I would’ve been freed by now. I sometimes wish to end it all but I have a weird motivation to outlive my enemies. I dont know how long this torture might last but I’ll tend to pick up some hobbies along the way. I delved into sports and was competing but parents denied me cause its dangerous, whenever i see someone my age or younger than me in sports my heart sinks (good for them tho) idk how long i’ll be stuck here but lets hope this thing ends

  • every morning, 6:30 AM, i become anxious because that when my parent wakes up, and when i hear footstep, i become more anxious, i am even could differentiate and guess someone just by hearing their footsteps, also not only that, when i hear the sound of open door which had creek sound, i suddenly get panic.

  • I had the opposite problem; I grew up in neglect, mostly because my mother had back surgery and couldn’t move around too much, and my father had a few mental health issues, resulting in him taking a lot of medication that probably sedated him to a great extent. As a result, my siblings and I basically had to raise ourselves, with me taking the lead on raising them. Less than a decade ago, I also learned I am autistic and suffer from generalized anxiety; more recently, it’s been deduced that I might also be bipolar, which is not helped by the fact that my father was bipolar-schizophrenic. So yeah, how about you guys?

  • I’m a child of neglect, physical, verbal and emotional abuse. I have a bunch of mental health conditions (OCD, ADHD, anxiety, depression) and I have struggled with eating disorders mainly bulimia. And I have horrible self esteem and struggle with controlling my emotions. I have no positives of how I was raised and I don’t recommend any parents to do so.

  • I have strict parents and the most one i hate is my mom because when i expressed my feelings like saying (im yelling in this one btw) “i hate you because you’re not helping me in my life or making me happy” She did this: She grabbed the chair, pushed it backwards, made me fall HEAD FIRST, then made a HUUUGE scar on the back of my head, never acted happy when near her again, never talked to her or let her talk to me

  • I’m currently 18 and have a bad relationship with my mum. For her, she is entitled to go through my personal conversations and when I bring it up she defends herself in some weird ways. I have tried opening up to her but she always judges me for things I do (both right and wrong). Sne never realizes the impact her words and actions have on me emotionally and mentally. All I know is if I ever have kids or adopt, I will always strive for a healthy, open relationship – especially when they’re teenagers.

  • My mother is a narcissist who could never admit she is wrong when she is. Growing up she is paranoid and overly strict and controlling. I finally left and I went crazy, got addicted to nicotine, had low self esteem, eating disorders and a poor sense of self, identity and confidence. It seeped into my struggle with maintaining relationships and after years have i finally found some good friends in my life. Romantic relationships I had one ex that was really good to me but I blew it and we broke up after 3 years. The chronic trauma or my upbringing and my break up made me even more guarded and distant and had strings of unavailable partners over the next 2 years. I am currently going for therapy to seek a way out of this. I finally understood setting boundaries and being more courageous to voice out my feelings and needs to a potential partner. This all feels extremely unfamiliar for me and I still have anxiety just thinking about it.

  • I’m almost 14. My parents are extremely overprotective and such. I have never been beaten, but came close to being slapped once. If it wasn’t for my mom I would have been. I think my dad has never beaten me because he knows that my mom will not only leave him but sue him as well, since she knows a lot about the law. That doesn’t stop him from aggressive and lashing out. There have been points where my mom has lied to me about my dad and also failed to protect me against his behavior. When I was younger told me a lot of nasty things about him and sometimes to this day. Every-time she forgives him, and when I am still mad at what happened, I am forced to forgive both of them. As soon as I turn 18, I am leaving and changing my name. My mom has proven herself to not care and protect me. She clearly will never leave my dad, so I must leave them both. This is the horrible reality I have come to accept. Wish me luck. I don’t know how I’m going to get through the next few years.

  • I don’t get it. Parents: Yes I’m gonna control my kids life all of the time Kid: is depressed Parent: why aren’t you happier?! Why aren’t you doing what I want you to do? And get the job that I want you to get. Why don’t you have a boyfriend/girlfriend yet when I told you not to talk to the opposite gender? Kid:👀💦

  • I was lucky, and had very nice and not-so-strict parents. While yes, I did get spanked on occasion, I don’t really have many memories of it. And my parents let me get away with more than they probably should. Now I was going into high school at 4ft 10inches and got bullied into suicidal thoughts, they helped me get over it and now I’m living very well. If you are experiencing something similar, stand up for yourself against your parents, bullies, and tell someone you can actually trust, not only your overprotective parents like people always say to do.

  • Omg I might show my parents this. I’ve been without so many things since the New Years and I’m a living example of these test. Since I was 12 my depression got worse and worse only because I fucked up on social media. I’ve learned my lesson and I might slip up but that’s human nature. I’m 14. My step mom literally don’t want me to be on yt because I do “inappropriate things” on there. She wants to track everything I do but she doesn’t know how… so since the New Years I’ve had no phone, tv, free will on my school tablet, or anything. And since I was 12 I’ve had no privacy as a punishment because I do inappropriate things and I put the family at risk. Like the playstation… she said because I friended two people that I got 300$ stolen off there bank account and I’m not taking responsibility because I know that’s not true. I’m 14, kids like me need privacy. Right now I’m on antidepressants that doesn’t work. I think about suicide a lot. I always flinch when someone lifts there hand up by me. My mental state is going down faster than the normal person and my arm is filled with cuts. Parents, please don’t take away your kids things and give them a real fighting chance to earn things back. Make them fill wanted and what ever you do, please… please don’t just take away things they need like privacy and self expression for your sake, not them.

  • “Spanking causes a bunch of problems…” well that explains a lot until I developed a high pain tolerance and they gave up trying to spank me because it had no effect. usually, my parents take away my wifi, keep me in my room, or something along those lines, but if I’m being honest I don’t actually “think about what I did” when I go to my room. Usually ill immediately find a loophole around my punishment and refuse to talk or interact with anyone for about two days to a week. yeah, I’m just kind of a stubborn sort of human being like that. I could go on about this for a while but this comment is already getting really long lol.

  • My parents literally still beat me for such a little wrong thing ..and when i cry in my room alone ..no one is their to support me ..nor them…they judge me for everything …like damn everything …and the only reason is they owe me ..and i am stiil a kid (15yo) ..no matter what i say to them … no matter what i do ..thinking they will change, be satisfied …but they are not satisfied for no matter what i do.. no matter how much i respect them..i don’t get the little bit of respect for them.and the only damn reason is ..THEY OWE ME This happens to me every day … but i learned so many things … I AM NEVER GONNA RAISE MY CHILD LIKE THAT .. 😢 😑😳😧😧

  • my mum never has and possibly never will hit be as ‘discipline’ but she does other strict and overprotective things that drive me insane. she has an app where she can manage my phone from hers (for example look at my location, look through my search history, phone lock etc) and it is for my ‘safety’. I don’t think she realises how bad this is. I never have privacy and she can pry into my life whenever she pleases. she has full control of what apps i download, almost every social media account i have, location, screen lock and search history. i honestly cant wait to move out and im sick of it. whenever ive tried to tell her that i feel unsafe and monitored everywhere i go i get in even more trouble and told it for my safety. she also claims to ‘never look though it’ but if that was true, why would she have all of this in the first place. i was told i was acting like a female dog (not said as nicely tough) and i was punished for trying to tell her how much i hated it. i don’t know what to do now but im really sick of it and i want to tell her but i’ll get in trouble again. what should i do about it?

  • My parents are pretty strict and i was always bullied at school but i dont want to tell them even tho its the right choice because they would ask me about alot of details and umm this just happend recently but because i have a really low self esteem and i would always sleep in class but one time the teacher reported to my parents about me sleeping in class when i went home my dad was kinda mad at me but then the teacher reported about me sleeping in class again and at that time i was soo scared but in my head i was actually planing on running away from my house well im ok now but the thing is that my dad was pretty strict and i was so scared at the second time i got home, and im still a kid but the guy on the profile picture is my dad but i did realise some efects of having strict parents and always getting bullied had really made me more agresif

  • I dislike my parents because: 1. When I have a bad neck posture (because the pillows I sleep on are hard and big) they will say it was my back that was the problem. 2. When I give my own opinions they will use it against me when we have an argument. 3. My parents tells my to go outside and get some sun even though there is literal pandemic outside. 4. My Uncle forces me to eat food I don’t like and I feel like I would throw up. 5. When me and my Uncle get into an argument (When I have good reasons) they will say my father will hit me if I keep my attitude like this. 6. I have a habit of scratching my eyes when I get annoyed getting scolded. When I scratch my eyes they will say “It is because of that damn phone. 7. I like cracking my fingers cause it feels good but when they see me cracking it they say “Its because of that laptop and computer they put radiation on your hand/because you keep pressing keys and stuff and it makes you tired. 8. I dont like socializing with them because they will eventually talk about me and talk all the bad things I done (I rarely do badstuff) 9. When I only stay in a room doing stuff they will say go outside and get some air even though I have online classes. 10. They took care of me physically but broke me mentally 11. What is the point being loved when you dont even feel loved.

  • i don’t think i was a bad kid. i was raised with 4 sisters. i was the only boy. i got hit a lot, it felt like everyday. Many cases I got hit not knowing what i did or what it was for. I remember crying in the closet counting the raised skin marks on my body after being hit. i remember hiding a lot trying to avoid being hit. i hated being the only boy because 99% of the hits went to me. i remember hiding in the dog house. i remeber bringing home Cs on my report card and being hit on my birthday. i remember running away after being kick in the face. i remember my mother saying she should ve never had me. i wasn’t allow to go out. im 32 years old now. i hate my life. i have a heart condition and wonder everyday if im going to die. I don’t have a good relationship with either parent. But i think i still love them.

  • My mom and dad has 2 different way of parenting. Mom had been over protective while dad wanted me to face life and make decisions on own. My mom’s influence on my life was getting a problem of my own social life that when I turned 18 my dad sent me 1500kms away to another part of the country to study in college. I’m having a life I could lead by myself.I’m grateful to my dad . But unfortunately many ppl have both parents strict… I had the support of my dad by many ppl don’t…

  • Not really strict, but my parents never listen to me. I’ve been in therapies since I was 3, they don’t help at all, and just make it all worse I’ve been in them for so long, but my parents always insist that I need them, even though I’ve told them multiple times that it just makes it worse, but they never ever listen to me. Worst part is that the therapies take up most of my time, due to this I can’t fulfill my dreams. I’ve always wanted to do theater and arts, but I don’t have the time too because of the therapies, worst thing is, a girl in my class named Sydney gets to do theater! Now Sydney has been in my class since last year (we both go to online schools, I was in online school since 2nd grade, I guess she joined when Corona started.) not only does Sydney do theater, she’s also smart and pretty! I hate that stupid goodie two shoes so much! Now that’s not the only thing, my sister was born when I was seven or eight, and you should NEVER have more than one child, if you have twins kill you least favorite one, and especially not from that big of an age gap! You don’t want to ruin the oldest’s life after such a long time of it being perfect! And never put them into pointless therapies or other things. Days progress and I’m losing my sanity more each passing week, there seems to be a new reason to commit suicide every single day, and my sister is still alive, which isn’t idel. Any suggestions on how I can get my parents to listen to me before my sanity goes completely numb?

  • when i was in 5th grade i got hit every single day bruises all over my body but where i lived u just couldnt report to any police or something i felt so much pain that at the school i went to i wantd every single kid too feel that we were relatively rich so seeing other kids so happy with thier parents just tore me, after sometime their friend made them see a therapist for anger issues or someting i dont remember but then they became so much better that i didnt bully kids in high school but i was strong or become a drug addict

  • I had really ignoring and rude parents, I was always the center of attentions which would sometimes get annoying but I still enjoyed it. Once my sister was born I was ignored and the devil which I know to this day as my annoying 15-year old sister got all the family fame. Once the new center of attention was decided, my wants and needs were completely ignored other than by my relatives on christmas and if you were hoping on birthday presents, screw it your bithday is a week awah. On top of that they never believed me even if the devilish child was saying a broke something too high to reach. Plus on top of that my parents asked the school board to put me with my worst bullies as an act of discipline claiming that “I thought they were his friends” knowing well these are the kids who made me go home every day with a different type of bruise scrape of even sometimes sprain.

  • haha..it all makes sense now. Very strict parents, they punish me for talking back, crying, giving attitude, doing bad things, and, apparently have a pet peeve of me making them look bad. They used to spank me when I was younger. Their punishments usually include not letting me see my friends or have any kind of social life. I have depression, and they are the cause.

  • My mom is WAY overprotective. She doesn’t even allow me to play roblox or walk to a corner store near my house by myself. I have never stayed home alone. I was also taught that if I am in a situation, if I am arguing with a friend, I am the one to blame no matter what. Which also results in me telling my dad I said sorry and he was like for what. I usually am like I don’t know. I also learned how to hear a door open across the house, every specific sound of a door. I can recognize the door closes at my relatives as well as my own house. I can tell whose footsteps belong to who, which floor boards creak, and I can read people like a book. Now, I have social anxiety, I am depressed, and I get stressed over the smallest things. I also have trust issues because I once took the fall for someone who was using me for their benefit. I got blamed of course anyway so what is taking a loss if it is mine anyway. Oh yeah, I still have child protection locks on everything I have. I am not allowed to have tik tok, instagram, snap chat, facebook, and all that. I am also not allowed to be commenting on youtube articles but here I am. I am also really got at hiding things. Last night, I closed my computer, turned off my light, pulled a blanket on me, and pretended to sleep all in less than 10 seconds. So yeah.

  • Well, I’ve learnt some stuff thanks to my strict mom. How to lie perfectly, and to hide and thing abt all things that can lead to the truth I learnt how to hide things from them (like money, school bad grades, my wounds when I cut myself, etc.) I learnt to hide my feelings to everyone. I learnt to think on their next move, and trying to predict it. I learnt to hide all my personal info on my laptop and phone, and ofc how to use vpns, incognit mode, safe mode, a little bit of console comands, etc. And finally, I learnt how to disable ESET, Microsoft, Android, and PS parental control on ANY device. But well, sadlly I can’t leave my parents house, or even try to fight back their abuses…so..yeah

  • Scrolling through these comments is a painful experience to have as people share their experiences with strict parents and how it’s affected them. If someone hits, beats, screams and confuses their child it’ll break their children, and thus shouldn’t even have children in the first place! If you hit something it breaks. This stuff should be common sense. If you’re a child of a parent who does these things to you, get as far away from them as possible because they failed as parents! If necessary, call Child Protective Services or the Abuse Hotline. It could save your life.

  • I’m not close with my parents I dont feel loved also I cant express my true self to them They always work all the time from morning to evening They didnt hurt me physically but emotionally I always say why do other teenagers get to play and bond outside while me I’m always stuck in our house they always say because you are different from them like what da hell MY FRIENDS KNOW ME BETTER THAN MY PARENTS

  • hi im ten years old and i just wanna say this, all of what life noggin is saying is true. over the past years, my parents (mostly my dad) let out his anger on me. if i did something wrong it would usually end with me getting a spanking with a belt. now that im here, ive learned to fear my dad and do everything perfectly or else i might as well be dead. ive also showed signs of social anxiety and just being sad like 40% of the day, but i havent gotten that checked out yet so im gonna say i dont have it. Ive learned to fear them even though i know they love me.
