In APA Style, first-person pronouns are used to describe work and personal reactions. If writing a paper by yourself, use the pronoun “I” to refer to yourself, while for papers with coauthors, use “we”. Many writers believe that they cannot use first-person pronouns like “I” or “we” in an APA Style paper, but this myth implies that writers must instead refer to themselves or a group.
APA language guidelines encourage using first-person pronouns when referring to oneself or a group. Citing a source starts with choosing the correct reference format, and using Scribbr’s Citation Example Generator can help learn more about the format for most common source types. When discussing research steps, use the first person point of view, as per the manual.
APA recommends using first-person pronouns “I” when discussing research steps, actions taken, or experiences. The first person is generally written in 3rd person due to its scientific/academic nature. Some writers may not be able to use the first person in APA style, but it is generally written in the first person. If you are a sole author, use the pronoun “I”, while if you are co-authoring a paper, use the pronoun “we”.
First-person writing involves using personal pronouns, such as singular pronouns like “I”, “me”, “mine”, and “my”, and plural pronouns like “we”. It is not necessary to hide your own agency by using “I did it”.
In summary, APA Style encourages using first-person pronouns when discussing work, personal reactions, and research steps. While some writers may believe that they cannot use first-person pronouns, it is generally acceptable to use them in APA Style.

Can APA be written in second person?
It is a commonly held view among writers that there is no APA Style guideline that explicitly prohibits the use of second-person pronouns such as “you” or “your.” Nevertheless, this is not an APA Style guideline that can be found in either the current or older editions of the Publication Manual. In his 2014 excerpt, Arnold employs the second-person to delineate the therapeutic approaches espoused by psychologist Carl Rogers.
Who writes in APA?
The APA Style is a scholarly writing guide for fields like psychology, nursing, business, communications, and engineering. It focuses on preparing draft manuscripts for publication and student papers for course assignments. However, it lacks general rules and usage examples relevant to behavioral and social sciences. The Publication Manual is a helpful guide to editorial style, but it does not cover general rules in widely available style books. The Publication Manual, based on psychology’s special requirements, takes precedence over style manuals in cases where they disagree.
How do you refer a person?
To be an effective referral, only agree to those you support and don’t hesitate to let them know if the position isn’t a good fit. Follow the business letter format, reference the job description, use specific examples, and include contact information. Companies often hire top talent through referrals, saving time and money in the hiring process. When referring someone, consider whether the contact is fully qualified for the position and if they have a strong work ethic.
If not, their behavior may reflect poorly on you as the referrer. Additionally, consider how your relationship may change if the contact doesn’t get hired for the position. After considering the decision, follow your company’s rules regarding job referrals. A template and example referral letter can help you craft your own.
How do you refer to a person in APA?
In-text citations for personal communication should include the name of the individual, the phrase “personal communication,” and the date. Examples of properly formatted citations include “T. Smith, personal communication, February 25, 2014” and “T. Smith relates the problems students have with APA style.”
What person do you write in for APA?
In APA Style, use first person point of view when discussing research steps and referring to yourself and co-authors. Avoid anthropomorphizing the work, as a study cannot “control” or “interpret”; instead, focus on the research and not the researchers. Foreground the research, not the researchers, and avoid using the editorial “we” unless it refers to you and your fellow researchers. Foregrounding the research does not require using the passive voice, but rather using pronouns instead of “experiments”.
Who to write APA Style?
The APA format guidelines require writing on standard-size paper with a 1-inch margin on all sides, a title page, a reference list, and a byline. The title page should be easy-to-read and double-space the entire paper. There are two versions of the title page: student and professional. A student title page should include the title of the paper, author names, affiliations, course number, instructor name, assignment due date, page number, and author note. A professional version should include the title, author names, affiliations, author note, and page number.
Should APA be written in first person?
The use of pronouns like “we”, “our”, or “us” in APA style is not acceptable as it may create assumptions about the reader and create a conversational tone. The second-person pronoun “you” is also not acceptable as it assumes information about the reader and could create a combative tone. For more information, consult the Form and Style page on Writing in the First Person – Scholarly Voice.
Can you write in 2nd and 3rd person?
The three principal writing styles are the first, second, and third person. In the first person, the author describes themselves and their feelings using the first-person singular pronoun, “I.” In the second person, the author addresses the reader directly, thereby establishing a personal connection through the use of the pronouns “you” and “your.” Both styles underscore the significance of personalization and connection in storytelling.
Is APA written in first-person?
APA language guidelines recommend using first-person pronouns “I” or “we” when referring to oneself or a group in writing. However, it is not recommended to use the third person. Footnotes in APA Style use superscript numbers and should appear in numerical order. They can be placed at the bottom of the relevant pages or on a separate page at the end of the text. Word processors can automatically insert footnotes, while a separate page called “Footnotes” should be created after the reference page.
📹 APA 7th Edition: Set up an APA Format Paper in 6 Minutes | Scribbr 🎓
Format your paper in APA Style (7th edition) in just 6 minutes. Everything from the title page and header to the abstract, body …
Bless you Chelsea!! I’m starting a Masters program, after doing my undergrad work back when Bill Gates was only a millionaire. This APA format is all brand new, and now in the 7th edition no less. I truly appreciate you taking the time to provide such useful and easy to understand content for the world to learn from. I gave you a thumbs-up and subscribed only two minutes into this article, and intend to watch your other articles in the very near future.
Ms. Seburn, thank you for making this article. It is the most concise, no nonsense article out there to get a paper done. I’ve always used Purdue OWL, but your article saved me hours of going back and forth with formatting questions. I was able to complete my first short APA paper in about an hour. You covered everything from title page to references step by step. Subscribed!
My teacher made this so extra…It literally took me 7 hours to write one page and I was having an anxiety attack 😭 Edit: to anyone struggling cause of school, you are ALREADY HERE SUFFERING, might as well leave with that MF GRADE! You got this kings & queens!!!. I passed the APA test & got 80/100 you all got this!
Hi Chelsea, I’m so glad that I have found you! I’ve been perusal your articles and taking notes! I’m a new student for a master’s degree and I’m back to school after 20 years! I feel so unconfident as my research knowledge and techniques are rusty! Thank you for all the useful, clear, and straightforward articles and instructions.
Chelsea, I left a comment on this article about two years ago saying how this article helped me get a feel of APA after not being in school for years. I’ve used the same template from this article for dozens of assignments since then and I’ll be graduating with my bachelor degree in August, and just wanted to say thank you again!
Some additional tips (from someone who IS grading these): 0:52 – As a professor, I greatly appreciate the disclaimer. For example, I know APA did away with the Times New Roman, 12-pt. requirement, but I still require it because otherwise, I get tons of hard to read fonts from students, which significantly slows down my grading! 5:30 – You should always change the font of your page number to match the font of your essay! 5:42 – Don’t hit enter until you make it to the next full blank page; that invites trouble. Hold Control + Enter (PC) or Shift + Enter (Mac) to insert a page break instead any time you’re trying to get to the first line of the next page. That way you are always on that top line, no matter how much you change before it. I recommend using this page break when you begin typing the body of the paper also, so you set up the last page as your References page, and then, no matter how much you add in the body, the References always start on the first line of that last page, as they should–and you can add each new reference as you use it within the paper, so you make sure not to leave any out. 8:50 – To create a hanging indent format, first type everything out normally, all aligned flush left, then highlight just those references, and on a PC, go to the Paragraph menu on the ribbon, Choose “Line Spacing Options,” and under “Special,” choose “Hanging” (about midway down on the right). On a Mac, go to the same place where you selected double spacing (seen at 2:13 in this article), choose “Line Spacing Options,” then look for “Special” and choose “Hanging” (again, about midway down on the right–you can see the “Special” at about 2:25 in this article) Also in the References, if including a link, try to fit as much of the link as possible on the same line, but DON’T HIT ENTER while in the link.
I’ve been writing APA for almost 2 years now since I am a social work major student and I am still wondering every time I have to write a paper whether I am doing it correctly. This helps a lot. Wished I looked this up when i first started. This helps a lot and I am following this from now on. THANK YOU!!!
to those stil struggling and for beginners as myself…its always good to first and foremost know the format of thiswriting after that know how to write its introduction properly, followed by body then references, then write your own personal sample and giveitto a pro to correct you or congratulateyou and you will be a pro in writing in no time….oooooh and always keep a positive mindset,,,whatever you feed your mind it is…i am starting this out and am halfway there with a positive attitude and a mind willing to learn…wish youbestof both worlds
Thank you for making this article! All of my classes are remote because of the pandemic and I have never even written a paper in APA format and had no clue how to! I love this because I am a visual learner so just reading the instructions is a headache and this made it so much clearer, appreciate it! 🙂
I had to switch to office libre, because no matter what I do there is always extra space at the bottom of some of the pages, even after formatting and following your instructions on this article and previous ones. I prefer word, but I can’t have my papers looking like that. I’ve been all over message boards and everywhere and tried all the things people suggested. Many many people have that same problem. Finally, someone suggested using office libre and it doesn’t have that problem when I use that program.
40yo Freshman here, at the end of my first asynchronous online Intro to Computers class, where we haven’t had to do not one mfn paper! But the last assignment before the finals is a writing a paper, like I beg ya pardon!?!? Sir, I barely had Computers of this caliber in the 90’s idk bout no APA! Only APA i know is Farooq and Bradshaw, the Acolytes Protection Agency from the Attitude Era in WWF😂 I feel like I’ve been set up yo!! 🥴😫 But this article has helped tremendously with the basics of what APA is. Thank you!!
thank you for this article! I appreciate it especially cause the APA changed and I had no idea what to do T-T. Great explanation! I am confused about one thing though, what is the use of the headings? Do they act as subsection titles for your main title? Or something like that. Please answer soon my paper is due in a week!
I’m currently getting my MBA at 32. I have a business undergraduate degree, a Master’s in Sports Management, and have years of work experience. I find it extremely irritating that I am still asked to write papers with this nonsensical format. Nobody writes research papers unless you are a in a research field. I’ll be dead before colleges ever adapt the worthless information they teach and require.
I cannot believe you’re not teaching how to use Styles in MS Word, and rather teaching people to set things manually, as well as things like “hit enter until you get to the next full page” – like, no, you should insert a page break (Ctrl+Enter). This is all dreadful advice. You also referred to “and” as a preposition (it’s a conjunction). Anyone taking any academic advice from you would be very foolish indeed.
i have an essay to turn in that is based off of 10 questions straight from the book. I answered them all easy bc they’re in the book but idk if i just did an essay full of plagiarism. But like the questions are literally in the book so am i wrong if im not supposed to answer bluntly from the textbook? idk please help
Super excellent presentation Chelsea. I learned so much and confirmed some things as well. You are an excellent educator. In addition you are a joy to look at with your warm super cute smiles and positive classy demeanor. I thought several times how attractive your intelligence makes you along with your warm personality beaming in this quality presentation. Very impressive in every way Chelsea. Thank you.
Hitting the enter key 4 times is NOT the correct way to format a title page or any other page. That’s what the paragraph formatting tool is for. When assignments used to be submitted on paper, using the enter key worked OK, but with electronic submissions, doing it that way leaves an ugly line of paragraph marks down the page. Same with moving from one page to the next. Insert a page break not a bunch of enter key strokes. If you don’t understand this comment, find and click on the “show paragraph marks” button.
I wanna marry you for this. Thank you so much for being aware of the step by step communication. I just finished my first psychology course yesterday and was never getting the full grade because I wasn’t using APA format. Punchline is, I din’t know it was because of that cause I wasn’t checking the inline feedback like a dummy. Lesson learned. This just changed everything.
I,m suppose to be in school and I played hookie to watch this and learn..My teacher gave me a 65 on my very first paper and I am too embarrased to show up in school with this handicap..My first experience with word was Fatal to my GPA..please talk slower ok..thank you..I,m a slow learner..lol..Thank you kind stranger..
There’s a standard….but professors can abandon that standard…..that makes it not a standard. APA/MLA is a ridiculous way to format a paper that makes no sense and will never be used again after school for the vast majority of students. If you are a teacher reading this, unless your students will be publishing papers that will need to be in APA format, get rid of the requirement because it is not a logical solution.
Ok, Chelsea, we are getting married after I graduate with my master’s because you have helped me to receive all A’s. LOL LOL Seriously, I have a question. I have a sentence in a book that I have paraphrased and at the end of the sentence, there is a colon followed by a, b, c, and d list of items. Where do I insert the cited work?
I always took writing for granted when I was an engineering undergrad, now that I am starting my masters program, well over half of it IS writing, nearly just as much as working out equations. I wish I’d have taken English composition as seriously as my education in mathematics, I was just one that never had a talent for the literary arts. Now I’m paying for it, but I hope to come out of this ok.
Thank you so very much! It was constructive! Finally, I decided to follow the guideline even I have been writing APA for almost a year. Peer assessment feedback often said, “Sadly, formatting ruined the paper even it was mistake-free.” I struggle with attention issues; I just looked at the APA paper template and kind of imitated the look. Heh, it’s never late to learn.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3 classes from my MBA and kept wondering why my instructors kept deducting format points. Again, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Chelsea, thank you for your hard work. I was trying to cite IRS codes in my paper using APA 7. I couldn’t find information on how to cite IRC code in-text and in the reference list. For example, I wanted to cite 26 IRC section 2503 (e)(B). This code refers to qualified transfers to medical institutions. I couldn’t find how to cite this correctly in text and then put it in a reference list. Can you help with this?
My professor just told us to go to Perdue Owl and figure it out? I went to the website and was lost in the text. The words don’t speak to me, nor guide me with visuals to compare as an example. He mentioned all students better have their references and citations correct and all papers will be checked for plagiarism. I been away from school in 32 years, so much has changed no more Brittanica Encyclopedia for research. 1st day of school was awkward with my pencil sharpener and pencils, everybody using laptops and tablets. I’m doing really good in school, turning in assignments with proper formats is difficult. Math is my Nemesis, a math equation for me is like Kryptonite for Superman. Thanks for the article, you are appreciated.
Thank you, instructor, Sean for your tips, and advice for the article about Format your paper in APA Style in Scribbs, I hope it will be my guide, to learn, and encourage me how to understand these questions. I know, it is not easy, but with my time management, and your teams. I can reach it, to pursue my goals. I want to be successful, and as a student at GCU (Grand Canyon University) I will prepare for this course for my healthcare administration. It will be the most important thing that I will have to take for my future.
