Dr. Anet Varghese provides tips for buying maternity clothes, including signs of when it might be time to transition and which comfy features to look for during the transition. She emphasizes pregnancy-friendly stores at every price point and suggests that women should start thinking about maternity clothes around the second trimester, typically between 12 and 16 weeks.
During the second trimester, the baby bump is likely more noticeable, and regular clothes may feel too snug for the baby. It’s fine to wait until the second trimester to buy the rest of your maternity clothes, as you can’t predict how your belly will grow. Some of the best postpartum clothes are maternity clothes restyled.
When clothes feel tight or uncomfortable during pregnancy, it’s time to switch to maternity clothes. Most pregnant women start thinking seriously about maternity clothes around the end of the first trimester or beginning of the second trimester. Many women start wearing maternity clothes in the second trimester when their bump starts to show, but it’s important to listen to your body and adjust your clothing accordingly.
In the beginning of your second trimester, when your belly starts to take shape, you want to start collecting your items. If you see a maternity store, make sure to check their prices and features to ensure you get the right maternity clothing for your needs.
In conclusion, finding the right maternity clothes is essential for a successful pregnancy and ensuring you look and feel your best throughout the nine months of pregnancy.

Is 8 weeks long enough for maternity leave?
Maternity leave can last anywhere from a few days to an entire year, depending on the benefits available and the ability to afford unpaid time off from work. The average time off for working U. S. women after having a baby is 10 weeks. However, only about 60 percent of U. S. employees qualify for FMLA benefits, and many moms and families cannot afford to take three months away without receiving a paycheck, leading to shorter maternity leaves. A study reported that 23 percent of employed women in the U.
S. return to work within ten days of having a baby. Maternity leave works by combining other benefits and time off, such as short-term disability benefits, vacation and personal days, and FMLA-protected unpaid time off. Despite support for paid family leave in the U. S., most moms end up using a combination of these benefits and time off.
What trimester should I buy maternity clothes?
In the second trimester, the baby bump becomes more noticeable, and regular clothes may feel snug. This is when most moms start investing in a maternity wardrobe. Maternity jeans or pants with stretchy belly panels can provide room for the growing belly while providing support. Tops with ruching or pleating at the sides are designed to flatter the baby bump and will continue to fit as you grow. A good maternity dress, like the Short Sleeve Scoop Neck Side Ruched Dress, is essential for adapting throughout your journey.
In the third trimester, maximum comfort and functionality are paramount as your body prepares for the final stretch of pregnancy. Appearances should be easy to put on and take off, providing ample room for the burgeoning bump.
Why do you have to wait until 8 weeks pregnant?
An 8-week ultrasound is used to confirm a pregnancy, determine a due date, and confirm the baby’s heartbeat. The doctor or technician looks for key physical indicators like a gestational sac and a fetal pole to confirm pregnancy in the uterus. The projected due date is then verified, which may not always be accurate due to differences in menstrual cycles. The ultrasound can determine gestational age and due date by measuring the size of the fetus. The crown-rump length (CRL) measurement is the most accurate method for early pregnancy dating, within 5 to 7 days in the first trimester.
How many weeks pregnant should you start shopping?
Expecting parents often wait until they find out the gender of their baby, typically between 18-21 weeks, but some may find out as early as 12 weeks. Regardless, unisex baby clothes can be stockpiled for the new bundle of joy. When shopping online, consider the time it takes for packages to arrive, as it can take weeks or even months. This is especially important during busy times like the holiday season and other busy periods for shippers and retailers. It’s up to the parents to decide whether to keep the baby’s gender a surprise or stock up on unisex baby clothes.
Will I need a maternity dress at 16 weeks?
During pregnancy, it’s essential to switch to maternity clothes when you feel tight or uncomfortable. Most women buy maternity clothes around 12-16 weeks into the first or second trimester. However, some women may need to buy them earlier or later depending on their pregnancy. There are seven signs that suggest it’s time to buy maternity clothes: tight clothes around the waist and hips, difficulty in sitting, standing, or bending over freely, difficulty in buttoning or zipping pants, pressure on the tummy or skin, riding up tops, tight or uncomfortable shirts, tight or uncomfortable bras, straps digging into the skin, and overflowing cups.
When to start buying clothes for an unborn baby?
Starting baby clothes during your second trimester is recommended, with basics like sleepsuits and vests being essential. If you plan to find out your baby’s gender, wait until after your 20 week anomaly scan. Prams and car seats are essential for new parents, but not until later in pregnancy as they can be bulky and uncomfortable to store. It’s best to buy these items early in pregnancy to avoid having them hanging around the house for months.
Can I start buying baby stuff at 14 weeks?
Expecting parents often wait until they find out the gender of their baby, typically between 18-21 weeks, but some may find out as early as 12 weeks. Regardless, unisex baby clothes can be stockpiled for the new bundle of joy. When shopping online, consider the time it takes for packages to arrive, as it can take weeks or even months. This is especially important during busy times like the holiday season and other busy periods for shippers and retailers. It’s up to the parents to decide whether to keep the baby’s gender a surprise or stock up on unisex baby clothes.
At what point in pregnancy do clothes not fit?
Pregnancy clothes should be purchased around 12-16 weeks into the second trimester, depending on the pregnancy. However, some women may need to buy maternity clothes earlier or later depending on their pregnancy type. Seven signs to buy maternity clothes include tight clothes, difficulty in sitting, standing, or bending over, unable to button or zip up pants, pants putting pressure on the tummy, tops riding up, shirt pulling too tightly across the chest, tight or uncomfortable bras, band or straps digging into the skin, and overflowing cups. Factors influencing the timing of buying maternity clothes during pregnancy include pregnancy stage, body type, and the need for support and comfort.
Is 14 weeks too early for maternity clothes?
Maternity clothing preferences vary among expectant mothers, with some signs indicating readiness to purchase maternity clothes. Some indicators include unbuttoning pants tops after meals, preferring Spandex clothing, feeling bloated all day, noticing a bump peeking out of a shirt, and button-down shirts not buttoning all the way down. These signs coincide with baby growth in the uterus, which typically begins at 20 weeks. However, there is variability depending on factors such as height, body type, weight gain, number of babies in utero, and if it’s a first pregnancy.
The bump typically pops a little later in first pregnancies than in subsequent pregnancies. The timing of starting maternity clothes depends on individual preferences and the baby’s growth in the uterus.
Do you need maternity clothes at 8 weeks?
Maternity clothes should be purchased between eight to 12 weeks of pregnancy, depending on the mother’s preference. High-quality, larger bras are essential for a maternity and postpartum wardrobe. Invest in stretchy knit layering tanks and tees that can be dressed up with blazers, cardigans, and shackets for the office and hoodies for working out. Round out your wardrobe with slouchy joggers and fitted leggings for now and after the baby.
To keep your pregnancy private during the first trimester, choose loose-fitting clothing that glides over your figure, such as soft knit tops, elastic or drawstring waist bottoms, and dresses. Empire silhouettes work well throughout the pregnancy, and a fitted top cinched just below your bust can help keep your secret.
For work, maternity clothes should be professionally polished, as workleisure is on the rise. Opt for a mixed material blouse that combines the elegance of woven fabric with soft knit, style with relaxed, elastic waist or drawstring pants and loafers, and add on-trend chain-link hoop earrings to draw the eye away from your belly.
How many clothes sizes do you go up when pregnant?
Pregnancy can lead to an average weight gain of around 35 pounds, which means you should wear the same size as before the pregnancy. This is because your shoulders are not growing and your back is not growing. To avoid discomfort, buy stretchy or flowing clothing that flows from your clavicle bone to about 5 inches below your hip bone. Going up two sizes takes about 2 months. Additionally, most people are different sizes in different styles, so there are four different charts for XS-L on the website, as different designers run differently.

Sharing some of my favorite pregnancy style tips I learned along my pregnancy journey’s with baby number 1 and 2. I hope you …
God, I needed to hear this ! jack spot and big thank to you!! I was burned out, lost all the interests and felt guilty not be able to enegatic about being pregnant. At the same time I Think I am not stressing out and couldn’t gather the question or priorities things. I feel much better and calm right now.
Just found your website, and my God, thank you for being so REAL but also lighthearted about pregnancy and birth! I feel like I just relate so much with everything you said, definitely had me in stitches over no.15. My poor husband — he has the patience of a saint. And I’m just over here feeling like a crazy women! xxx
Agree. Don’t tell anyone when you’ve decided on a baby name, because people will give you their option (either they’ll tell you or you can read it in their faces) and try to convince you to name the child something else or whatever. Just you and Seth, decide on a name and then keep quiet about it until baby is there, because as soon as baby is born and given the name, people will accept it because they can’t exactly go ahead and tell you they didn’t like that name – or at least most people will try to avoid that 🙈
Just about to hit 24 weeks and grateful to finally see someone acknowledge the weird hormonal stress in 2nd trimester – I had 5 days around the 20-week mark where my blissful pregnancy turned on its head and suddenly I was fragile and crying on a hair-trigger. Then I woke up on day six and I had levelled out 🤷♀️ it took until a few days ago for me to finally feel above the angst again; hoping it stays that way for a bit before 3rd trimester turns up to kick my ass. All that to say, thanks for affirming my experience by being real ❤
Low key when you said 5:25 “I haven’t done anything.” I literally couldn’t stop but feel some relief. It’s a weird pressure but at the same time there isn’t much I can do second trimester. Other than sit and wait. Maybe prep myself mentally through the morning sickness and stupid symptoms. But I’m not even two months in and I’m stressing that I’m doing something wrong. 😅
I’m 20 weeks and don’t really feel hormonal, I’m a very calm, cool, collected person, or “so I think” but I don’t feel like I make a big deal out of anything, it’s like “oh well” nor I feel stressed about things, not very opinionated in general. Pregnancy symptoms are minimal. But the baby flutters are my favorite thing! Good luck to us all!
you just listed all the things I am dealing with in my first trimester currently. Especially everything being overwhelming and hunger all of a sudden. I shared this moment with my husband and was talking to him how i feel grateful wor his help and he started to say about his fears of me getting used to these ways of talking with him and moodiness and just keep being this negative after pregnancy too and so we fought again instead of just saying I appreciate you realize that this moodiness is tough, he just made me madder. (( Aaaaaa. I cant deal with that…
Love your articles! I’m in my second trimester too! I’ll be 18 weeks Tuesday. My placenta is also in the front as well. When the ultrasound nurse told me that I was like “is that normal?!” Because I know nothing about it lol and she said yes, but might take awhile to feel. Thanks so much for your articles! You also crack me up.
I’m 12 weeks and so glad I found your website! I can relate to this article and your style so much more than other pregnancy articles. Sure, they have informative stuff but I mostly find the ladies kind of annoying!! haha. Thanks for being real /a ranting crazy lady like moi. Looking forward to checking out your other articles throughout my pregnancy! 🙂
Thank you, I’m so relieved to know I’m not the only hormonal and emotional pregnant human. It’s just so reassuring to hear other women sure exactly what I feel like I’m going through! I feel bad as my husband is having the short end of my emotions lol, but I am also very grateful how gracious he has been as well!

You’re so funny and I like your energy in your article. I’m 22weeks pregnant and can’t wait to see my little baby. I laughed when you talked about checking the baby app because I still check it almost everyday😁🥰 also it’s sooooooo true about being overwhelmed, I get stresses over little things every time and want to cry. It never happened to me before.😅
I enjoyed this🤣 it’s been 11 years since my last child I’m starting my 2 trimester now!!! So far this baby is great!🤷🏼♀️🤣. But I understand the hormonal changes and over dramatizing some things…I also get what ppl call “baby brain,” forgetting little things that I normally are sharp on! 🤪😫😩😆 I’m enjoying this pregnancy so far. My first child 13 years ago my daughter had me eating and sleeping all the time. My son 11 years ago was a breeze, nothing changed much and my energy was great! Fast forward now, this baby is really chill…just what I stated above, great pregnancy this far🙏🏼🥰😁😁😁
23 weeks pregnant here 😊👍 for a minute i thought it was gonna be a list of shit i need to buy that i cant afford, can just about afford to eat right now ha, i do have plenty of moisturizer though thats one thing! But yeah you won me over totally with the noises to represent baby moving and they were spot on 🤣👍! I do ‘sound affects’ for every day life things too haha i know exactly what u mean! An i was laughin that yeah ive not been checking the app as much too! Ive been overwhelmed about tidying my flat too (hence why on YouTube rn… oops) just gona have to put my big girl pants on and do it!!! And just try not to wee myself. Cause this girl aint wasting good money on panty liners 🤣🤣🤣👍 Brb just off to Google perineum stretching.. Ha anyway sorry for the long post! Take care beautiful mama’s and bumps!!!!! 😊👍💕
Currently in the 2nd trimester with my 1st and the best way I can describe baby kicks are like… when you go to the fair and play one of those carnival games and win a fish in a bag as a prize and you end up accidentally sloshing the bag around too much while carrying it and feel the fish hit the side of the bag 🤣
Im 18 weeks pregnant with my third child and atleast mentally I feel so chill knowing most of the things. Honestly I don’t know everything but after two c sections, 1 prem and NICU experience, morning sickness all pregnancy long with the second pregnancy, placenta previa, emergency birth and all the nuggets in between…. honestly I’m just happy I’m not having natural birth, not that I had a choice before but I do take my hat off to the natural birth mom’s. And seriously I’m so happy that I’m working from home with this pregnancy (can nap and rest when I need to) where I was working as a teacher with both my previous pregnancies and even had to work in school holidays for holiday school. This is definitely my last child so I’m trying to make the most of it and loving it. With my second and now third preg, I could feel baby from 11 weeks. So been feeling baby for a while already, just frustrated having to wait to wait so long to find out the gender………. I am small so that’s why I could feel baby so early. Love this article ♡
I’m currently in my second trimester. Was only just able to find an OBGYN that could see me. It’s tomorrow. Kinda worried since I’ve been winging it since now. And I’m about 18-19 weeks. I’m pretty healthy but I smoke, been working on stoping and super close. Just have to stick with it. I worry for my lil nugget. Mainly cause I have no idea what I could do help lessen the impact on the baby. I’ll still love them regardless. Anyone here smoke? What helped you stop? I don’t want to talk to a helpline or something, they always feel automated. Also easy recipes that arnt hard on your wallet or recipes you know would be nice ( live in CA so prices are shit ) Sry for rambling. I’m lonely
I’m 21 weeks pregnant and a couple weeks ago I had a nightmare that I gave birth early and didn’t have ANYTHING for the baby and then the next morning created my baby registry and started sending it out. I now have a crib (it’s not set up but i have it) and a couple new born stuff so I feel slightly calm about it
I’ve just entered my 3rd trimester(when I found this article) and must say that I agree with pretty much all she said. however what I found more interesting and reliving, is to see a B belly on someone with a healthy weight. I’m considered obese, and only know I appear pregnant, due to my B belly making me just look fat… I was really sad and upset about it. I though that this only happened to bigger sized woman, as all I found were obese women with this issue… Somehow, seeing her with a B belly, comforted me.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that had to wait to see if it was gas or baby kicking in the beginning lol!!!! The kicks have gotten way more powerful now lol, there is no mistake on them being baby kicks lol! I’m just about to hit week 26, baby has his moments when he moves alittle and then alot at other times. I’m to the point I’m starting to freak out alittle inside about labor coming in the next 3 months………
I thought the 2 nd trimester was easier when it comes to hormons, but OMG it’s so much worse than my first one… I was basically crying all day because I feel I’m not only pregnant, but also getting fat and in comes my husband! Asking if I’m exaggerating with sweets and carbs, coz I’m getting larger. Aaaand the water works started yer again! He really felt sorry afterwards, but the damage was done!…. can’t believe I’m still fricking crying. DAMN YOU HORMONES!!!
I was 15 when I had my daughter and it was the easiest labor that I can’t even begin to explain. Now I’m 39 and my daughter is 24. I am pregnant with 2nd child. Lol who does this? Has a baby really young then another when I am really old. But I am so well prepared. I am just having nightmares and I’m scared to die during birth is this normal?
The books you recommended are in my cart now! Thank you!!! ♥️ I’ve been a train wreck for ooohhh… let’s see, how many weeks am I 😂? I am 15 weeks. So I’ve been panicking for 15 weeks 😂. Thank you! Hugs. And Seth sounds a lot like my husband Lynwood. This is our first and ONLY baby, and he’s been an absolute dream 😭♥️ I could not think of a better person to walk through Hell with 😂😂😂 New subscriber, can’t wait for more!
