📹 10 Essential Ties UPDATED! | Menswear Wardrobe Essentials

I’ve been wanting to make an update to our 10 essential ties for quite some time now and I’m super excited to share that with you …

What tie width is currently in style?

Standard ties are typically 3. 25- to 3. 5-inch wide, making them suitable for various situations, including job interviews and formal events. These ties are versatile and don’t look too skinny or wide, making them ideal for large groups with both males and females wearing the same tie. They are also commonly used in uniform wear. Slim ties are becoming the standard for stylish young professionals, as they can be dressed up or down, knotted tightly or loosely, and look great with a suit or jeans. They are also suitable for pre-teens who are tall enough for a men’s tie but not yet wide enough to fill out a traditional 3. 5-inch width.

What kind of ties are popular right now?

In recent years, classic patterns like plaids, polka dots, and stripes have resurfaced in men’s ties, adding a retro touch to modern outfits. Textured ties, made from materials like wool and cotton, provide a unique touch and can add depth to outfits. Sustainability has become a dominant conversation in today’s culture, leading to the inclusion of earthy and natural tones in tie collections. The Tie Company offers a variety of designer ties for men in shades ranging from rich brown to deep greens and vibrant blues, bringing an organic tone to an outfit.

What shape ties are in fashion?

For corporate men adhering to office tie policies, standard neckties are the more traditional and fashionable option due to their bolder, more confident perspective. Thin striped ties are a must-have for Wall Street fashion. Skinny ties are fashionable for casual wear and pair well with chinos or a blazer. Their thinner appearance makes them less overwhelming on the eye. Exotic ties, such as floral or paisley ties, can elevate your wardrobe and add an instant inviting and vibrant appearance. These ties are the preferred choice for those seeking a wealth of eccentricity in their tailoring.

Do people on Wall Street still wear suits?

The custom and bespoke customers of the time were primarily bankers, who wore gray suits for daytime wear. However, this standard has been out of vogue for years, with the suit and tie being in a recession. The tie has been on a slow descent and went into free fall after the casual Fridays of the 1990s. Goldman Sachs, a prominent white-shoe investment banking giant, announced in 2019 that it was shifting toward a more casual dress code.

CEO David Solomon stated that all of us know what is and is not appropriate for the workplace, and certain divisions within Goldman had been allowed to dress more casually before the change became companywide.

What type of tie knot is in style now?

Tie knots play a crucial role in enhancing the elegance and refinement of an outfit, especially for weddings. The Windsor or Half Windsor knot is a popular choice due to its balanced, symmetrical, and distinguished appearance. Pairing these knots with wedding ties can add a ceremonial flair, making them a functional accessory and statement piece that complements the overall elegance of the wedding attire.

When dressing up, the harmony between the tie knot and shirt collar style is key. For wider shirt collars like spread or cutaway, the Windsor knot is an excellent choice due to its substantial size. Conversely, for narrower collars like point collars, the Four-in-Hand knot, with its slender and elongated form, is ideally suited. This knot maintains a balance in proportion, ensuring that the tie does not overpower the shirt’s design.

Choosing the right tie knot not only improves the outfit’s aesthetics but also showcases your attention to detail and understanding of style nuances. It is not just a trivial aspect of dressing, but a crucial element that can dramatically alter your appearance and the impression you leave.

Whether you’re preparing for a high-profile formal event, a regular day at the office, or a relaxed social gathering, the right tie knot can act as a subtle yet powerful statement of your attention to detail and understanding of fashion nuances. Mastering the art of tie knots allows you to navigate through various social settings with ease and confidence, knowing that your choice contributes significantly to the elegance and sophistication of your ensemble.

What is the trend in 2024?

Fall 2024 fashion trends are a reset for wardrobes, with boho, heritage-inspired style, plaid coats, and sharp blazers being key trends. All-jeans outfits have been seen at New York Fashion Week. Tall, structured boots were shown at Prada, Bally, and Gucci, while minimalist ballet flats and classic T-bar shoes from Bottega Veneta, Ferragamo, and Tory Burch are also gaining popularity. Burgundy accessories have been seen on numerous runways, while studded pieces and neckties have taken over street style.

Butter yellow is expected to be a popular choice, with everyone from Hermès to Sandy Liang showing the unexpected neutral. These trends are fresh from autumn’s best catwalks and are expected to be worn this season and beyond.

How do you dress like you work on Wall Street?

Investment banks often have “casual Fridays” where the dress code is relaxed, but it’s not easy to decide what to wear. The business casual dress code typically includes khakis, golf or polo shirts, or a sweater over a colored shirt for male employees. For women, it’s usually trousers or a knee-length skirt and a blouse or a shirt with a collar. It’s best to avoid jeans and T-shirts.

Investment banking is not just about work, but also about the status and prestige projected through clothing. While professional skills are important, if you’re considering a career in investment banking, it’s better to leave sneakers and jeans at home. Remember that success in investment banking is not just about the work itself, but also about the status and prestige projected through clothing.

Are wide ties old fashioned?

The current trend in tie widths falls between 2. 25″ and 3. 25″. Ties of a narrower width may be perceived as outdated. In selecting a tie, it is advisable to take into account factors such as the presence of a slim or narrow physique, particularly in the chest and torso regions. For men with smaller chests and narrower torsos, ties with narrower widths are recommended. The Galveston skinny tie features a standard solid pattern with black flecks.

Are skinny ties out of style?

Skinny ties are a stylish and versatile option for men with slim or slender builds. They are popular for lean frames and are associated with a youthful, modern style. They can be worn in professional business casual settings and fashion-forward environments. Standard ties, made from silk, wool, or a blend of fibers, offer a proportionate balance suitable for a wide range of body types. They are perfect for suits with wider lapels and have a timeless appeal.

A normal width tie is versatile and can be worn for various occasions, from conference rooms to wedding parties. Fabric choice and patterns also play a role in appropriateness, with classic colors and patterns being suitable for corporate offices and fashion-friendly environments.

What is the most popular tie pattern?

Paisley, a timeless pattern, is often associated with formal occasions and is often found in neckwear collections. This elegantly swirled repeating pattern has evolved over time, from large bold patterns to small, tone-on-tone prints. Originating thousands of years ago in Kashmir, paisley was once reserved for royalty but was also used in silk shawls worn by men for centuries. The pattern has evolved from a simple geometric design into intricate and varied paisleys, making it a popular choice for business and formal wear. The intricate and varied paisleys on ties have proven their durability and versatility.

In banking, a polished and professional image is crucial. Opt for trousers or khakis and a button-down shirt, and ensure your suit is well-tailored and fits you properly. Pay attention to details, such as polished shoes and wrinkle-free clothing. If wearing a tie, avoid being too loud or flashy.

Confidence is key, even if you don’t feel like the most qualified person in the room. Stand up straight, make eye contact, and speak with authority. Carrying yourself with confidence will make people more likely to believe in you and your abilities.

For a more casual investment banking wardrobe, consider a polo shirt or the “midtown uniform” for an investment banking 2024 male wardrobe. With a little effort, you can impress clients and land a big promotion.

  • That’s the update I was waiting for! I watched the one you made few years ego and to be honest the article didn’t really convince me about wearing ties and let’s face it, ties have always been the only thing I still have a hard time to wear. To me wearing a tie feels always like it’s too much but Coming across in this article the Deep red with the gold medallions and the blue one changed the whole thing, it really opens new doors in terms of style and feels very casual, a nice way to express your style in a fun way. The tuxedo look awesome👌👌👌. Thanks for the article.🙏🏼

  • Your enthusiasm for simple elegance is infectious – and your tone is so friendly, like we’re speaking face to face. I’ve transformed into a fashion enthusiast since I bought my first suit following your advice – a midnight blue – back in 2019. I’ve recently bought a 3-piece burgundy suit (exactly like yours). I would love to see a article on ‘How to style a 3 piece’ and ‘How to style burgundy’!

  • One of your many praise worthy aspects are the attention you always give to details . Great tie collection and great outfits as well. Particularly I loved the look with navy DB suit most. Hope to see some outfit ideas with the double breasted suit. As you haven’t made any articles on your db suits so far( except the indochino brown db suit review)

  • Hello Brian, I know this question has nothing to do with this article, but you mentioned it in a previous one. You have a pair of round glasses that you mentioned that you got from Cubitts. Do know, or happen to remember if the Cubitts model was called “Herbrand”?…….and was it black or tortoise shell? Thanks Brian

  • Wanted to wait for day 3 to comment, but hot damn that red medallion look is a million dollar look. There’s something with double-breasted suits that’s just extremely powerful, and that tie is just the pop of color (hmm) that completes the whole look. Also really liked the brown striped tie look. Very classy – especially paired with that Patrimony that just makes every look even classier. I’ve said this before but I believe should be noted again – I think the intro and new effects take the articles up a level, I like them a lot. Cheers.

  • Ties are not my forte, but I really like the green striped and the two medallion ties. The correct way to have a pop of colour (don’t kill me!) in your outfit. Correct me if I’m wrong but your choice in ties have toned down since 2014, but the tone of your voice in your articles have gotten livelier since then. A weird inverse correlation perhaps!? – Han

  • Great content as always! Timely too in my case as I have been searching for ties. I was curious, are you familiar with the brand Poszetka? The brand is mostly built around their accessories (like ties), but they also seem to have clothing with the sartorial details that I know you’re fond of. I haven’t found a single mention of them on YouTube outside of Polish reviewers, for whatever reason

  • Whilst the list in this article is great, but I’d like to add 2 more ties which I consider to be absolute essentials. The navy blue or burgundy polka dot silk tie is an absolute classic and timeless tie which every man needs to have in his wardrobe. I own a burgundy one, and I find it so easy to pair it with formal suits as well as sport coat and odd trouser combinations, well I even paired it with a trucker jacket in suede and a dress shirt and odd trousers with penny loafers for a high low outfit. The second tie would be a brown grenadine, you own it, and you use it a lot, so I don’t need to tell you just how versatile this tie is, and I think you included it in the previous version of essential ties.

  • Great article as always Brian. I have a very quick question mate. I’m getting married (I should mention this is a watch question). I’m thinking of buying the Tudor BB steel and gold with the black face (not the champagne dial). I’m limited by budget and on the bracelet this is at the top end of my budget. What do you think in regards to this watch for a wedding?

  • For some reason I don’t like striped ties AT ALL ! it irritates me. It reminds me of a Christmas candy cane, which I never liked either. Lol I prefer other patterns, pleasing to the eye. I think even dots are too feminine for my taste also. To each his own, I’m just stating my personal taste and opinions. ✌️

  • Ties are extremely unprofessional. They’re a strong indication of idiocy considering how easy it is to be choked out while wearing one. When I interview men for my company, the ones wearing ties are the first to be crossed off. Demonstrates to me a lack of street smarts. Lack of wisdom. Shows me they are good at wasting money, too. Can’t have any of this nonsense.

  • Taking away from the outfits and ties. I think a huge round of applause needs to go out you can see such a change in the production of the articles over the last month or so (not that I felt it needed improvement I might add) which given the situation the world is in astounds me! Clearly you have your groove back and i for one am thankful. Having these articles to watch in my breaks from works just makes me so excited to get back out and dressing. I seem to be making more of an effort even for the little trips to the shops to look put together. Who know when I will have chance to put a tie on again but I look forward to that.
