He met his wife, Tabitha, in 1969 and they lived in a trailer in Hampden, Maine. King wrote numerous short stories, some of which were published by Playboy and other men’s magazines. However, significant writerly success eluded him. Tabitha, who had been one of the first to read Stephen’s short stories in colleges, loaned him her own typewriter and refused to let him take a higher-paying job that would mean less time to write.

She also discovered draft pages of Carrie, which she ordered Stephen to keep working on. King has continued to pay Tabitha’s encouragement forward, blurbing books from established and new authors, and citing a wish to leave publishing better than he found it. Tabitha is a respected author in her own right, as are both of their sons, Joe Hill and Owen King.

  • I’ve been reading Stephen King’s books since back in the seventies, and over time I came to realize that for me, being in the mood to read his books was a giant red flag indicating that I was in the midst of a major depression. Unfortunately, not reading his books doesn’t cure depression, LOL, but at least it’s a useful way to track my outlook on life. I admire his tenacity and the volume of his output, and I find his book on writing to be very useful and well crafted. His style may not be for everyone, but at least he writes his own books and doesn’t outsource the work to a group of other people the way so many other writers do these days. The lovely thing about books in general is that there are so many of them. If I’m really lucky I’ll always find something wonderful to read no matter my age. I’m less about fiction these days, but audio books are a lovely way to enjoy being read to. Road trips are much more fun with a good story to hear.
