  • Any time I was responsible for contributing to a production code base, I would end up with several side projects where I could try out whatever crazy ideas came up. Before anything got added to the real code base, it would have been tested and mangled several times to work out the issues. I see a lot of programmers just going straight to the production code, and I wonder if they have really thought through what they are about to do – I prefer to have gone through several ideas, no matter how bad or weird, before I decide on the direction. Sometimes the ideas that sound bad or crazy at first glance, end up being the best way forward.
