I’m a 45 year old man who never gets emotional.. this hits me man.. as a father it hits me. Hats off to this man and any law enforcement agency that would take action against such a profound act of pure love should be forced to look at what this family goes through and the immediate relief their daughter gets from what their doing. The laws are so outdated and must be changed.
I have nothing but the highest level of respect for Mark as a father. As a paraplegic with intolerable spasms and pain I know first hand how cannabis helps make an impossible situation that much more tolerable. A true father/parent would do anything, including risking their own freedom like Mark is doing, to ease a childs pain and suffering. He deserves a medal, not a potential arrest record.
If this man ever gets put in jail for this. We need to seriously look at what our best interest is as a society. I’m a pretty tough person emotionally, but my son changed my life and if someone wouldn’t let me treat my son or give him a better quality of life, I don’t know what I would do. Didn’t know this would generate this many likes. Incidentally, I’m a lawyer. …And yes, it takes bravery to fight against “the system.” I’ve had to warn many people about moving forward with their suits, whether in criminal defense or in a civil matter. Sure, lawsuits sound romantic, but when you’re in the middle of one, the whole tone changes. It’s hectic, confusing, and things seem to constantly move both quickly and slowly at once. When somebody gambles to change the law, others benefit from that person’s bravery. Typically, people just don’t want to antagonize the system because resources aren’t infinite. By the time you “make it” in the world, you’re likely going to fall into that mode of thinking of how best to preserve what you’ve struggled so hard to accumulate: your home, your business, your job, the wife and kids anda nice suburban existence. I guarantee you, most people in that position are not looking to rock boats. It takes principle and gumption to poke the bear of “the system” I spoke of above. Lawyers know that system and most of them are part of it. Heck, I’m part of it to some degree. I know that for some clients what offer the prosecutor might offer based on his criminal history. I’d wager that lawyers try and even calculate what a reasonable plea deal might be based on factors like race and the voir dire process in jury selection.
Update: When Mark Zartler posted the now viral article of treating his daughter with cannabis, Child Protective services showed up to their doorstep under the notion that the treatment was a form of child abuse. Luckily the judge overseeing the case weighed all of the evidence and decided that she was not being abused and that it was in Kara’s best interest that she stay with her parents as her guardians. From what I understand, under the compassionate use law, Kara’s parents would first have to work through all of the legal pharmaceuticals and then 2 doctors would have to agree that all of those treatments are ineffective before she could be prescribed cbd. Even then, the legal amount that she would be allowed to take would be so small that it would have no effect on her symptoms. Legally, what her father is doing is considered a felony punishable by 2 yrs. to life. Kara’s parents are still trying to change legislation.
It’s so sad my close friend ended up doing that for her son who was suffering with 20 seizures a day and severely autistic as well. The first day he started his medical marijuana treatment he only had 10 seizures for that day and had weeks and months went on his frequency of having seizures diminished. We have to do better for these kids.
He’s found a holistic method to help his poor baby girl, let him do what he can for HIS child! I applaud him for this and the fact it’s a natural growing plant is all the better, I wish her the best of luck. I have a illness that causes severe nausea and pain in my stomach and it took a whole year and a half to try cannabis for my symptoms and I gotta say that it’s helped a whole heck of a lot more then any other medication I was given. It takes away all the bad in the matter of minutes. It’s obviously not for everybody but it really does help. Praying for this family ❤
I have a brother with pretty severe autism and cannabis has helped him so much. Taking care of an autistic child with behavioral issues takes such a mental toll on the whole family. The amount of holes we had in our walls and bruises from him hitting us was just insane. He still has episodes but now we have a way to help him feel calm. No medication worked as well as cannabis does. And the plus side, it’s not addictive like some of his medications were.
I have been having a rough time. Can’t really talk about stuff that I go through on a daily basis to anyone (I don’t want others to think I’m a failure). The father is so strong, but it sorta brings tears to my eyes when I think about his wellbeing when he becomes old. What a beautiful family. God bless them.

The real criminals are the monsters that criminalized this effective plant in the first place, and the thugs that enforce those needless and unethical laws prohibiting cannabis possession and use. My grandfathers last few years were miserable and painful, but after being introduced to marijuana, specifically edibles, it helped him a lot, he went from a walker and clearly being in pain to walking upright and upbeat, saying he never felt better. Using cannabis should be legal and not demonized as some horrible drug. I miss him, I wish I could have spent more time hearing his stories. I know of a parent whose child had frequent episodes of severe epilepsy. She followed a neighbor’s advice and boiled marijuana leaves and let him drink this tea regularly. She said it reduced the frequency and severity of epilepsy episodes to a very minimal level. Her son was able to go to school. Like this father, she was doing this illegally. But if it enables her son to go to school, risking jail is worth it, she said.

They didn’t make this decision recklessly, Mom listed off all of the concerns that a parent considering this option should reasonably have, I thought that was important to reiterate. A lot has changed in U.S. in the 6 years since this was made, not sure about Texas specifically, but this story and so many more like it are still very powerfull and continue to make us question our war on drugs in this country.

I’m not a smoker, never was into getting high. My cousins & friends always smoked & I’d just be chilling waiting for them to finish. A few years ago I suffered a spine injury that left me paralyzed & I had to have 2 back surgeries before I was even 27. Still not into smoking or getting high but I did for my birthday and I can’t tell you how amazing I felt after years. Not only was I so relaxed but my legs and back weren’t hurting and I was able to use the bathroom effortlessly as well. Again I’m not into getting high but it does have alot of health benefits that can give some people a break when dealing with some of lifes hardest battles. It’s not something I want to get into but every now and then it helps. Salute to him for doing this responsibly so his daughter can get some type of relief and control.

I back these parents 100%. Seeing your child suffer like that has to be one of the hardest things to witness. All they want to do is see her happy and not suffering, if this were my child and I’d see her instantly happier and not trying to harm herself, I’d do the same, marijuana helps the pain, the stress, your appetite and so on, it’s easy for the world to say they’re wrong, but a parent that truly loves their children should understand.

Cannabis saved my life. People who don’t have suicidal headaches just do not know how divine relief and no bad side effects can be. Vaporized whole flower is a way to successfully treat daily attacks longterm without needing to increase the dose over time. But some mmj docs in FL still like to push the capsules of pure THC– which results in needing progressively stronger amounts.

These parents are amazing. They are pioneers in the use of cannabis for true medical situations. I can’t imagine, as a parent, feeling helpless for years on end while my child is suffering the way Kara does. It took courage for these parents… they could have been arrested and sent to prison for using cannabis for their daughter. At least now cannabis has been de-criminalized.
I could go to jail for treating my dog with cbd and thc oil, he has cancer and was throwing up blood! Vet was ready to put him down I told her my plan and was told I’m risking jail time because technically a dog can’t consent and since it’s a mind altering substance it technically animal abuse! But we all have to risk it all once in our lives, I’ve got 1 years longer I’ve been able to spend with my best friend so far!

Considering what she has to live with these to extremely stressful disorders in the first place on top of the fact that it gives her a sense of peace and escape from it why shouldn’t inhumanly stressed person also be able to experience moments where she is completely removed from it and be able to be truly giddy. something every kid should have.
As someone who works with people with autism i see things like this constantly, they do hurt themselves very badly and you can’t do nothing but contain them, its so sad and frustrating cause regular treatments don’t really work. I totally understand those loving parents, they only want her daughter to be safe. I see no crime in this.
I’m high functioning autistic, I doubt I would be without cannabis. I’m lucky I found it early, my early years were a struggle but that first time I smoked it I knew it made sense, it grounds me. Without it I doubt I’d have a career and a functional life, I’m an engineer and have great people around me that know my quirks. It’s no cure but a huge help.
We have a 21 year old downsyndrome who harms herself by bitting, punching and pulling her hair it got so bad that my husband had to retire early because it was just impossible for one person to care for her, and after try numerous medications to calm her down and waiting for an appointment with the neurologist we decided to try cannabis oil, well she is a lot calmer now, I myself have never used any type of drugs bur it has made a difference for our daughter
I think marijuana is good to manage SPD with autism. Autisim isn’t a condition…. It’s a different way of living. They self harm because they get sensory over load super easily and doesn’t know how to express themselves and stressed and self harm through self harm. I hate how they are talking about autisim. I wish I was able to give some to my autistic son so he can stop hitting, kicking, blighting, and spitting on me. He’s been awake for 9 hours and he has kicked and hit me for at least 8.5 hours!
i’m a teenager with asperger’s and i’ve been using weed for 3 years. I do get the high but that’s what helps. before i started my emotional regulation was horrible. I had been sent to a psych hospital and i was getting suspended every month, as i got older i started avoiding school and “eloping”. But then i found weed and now I have all As and Bs and I only have 3 absences so far
I was curious on how cannabis effects those with autism because I have seen cannabis make people with other mental conditions act as if they had absolutely nothing wrong with them. Please just make sure your not giving him weed too often, because being on THC before the brain is fully developed can and usually does cause more mental conditions if he is on it too much.
I don’t agree with anyone under 16 smoking it. Bc obviously that’s gonna cause some pretty irreversible damage on the lungs. I’d strongly recommend that parents that have children with these needs only provide them with tinctures and edible forms of it. Seeing as how it’s not going to harm the child’s lungs that way
Pharmaceutical companies don’t want it on the markets its cheep and easy to get but there product would be expensive compared to getting some weed up the road or grow your own so they want to sell expensive drugs that don’t work and come with bad side effects all they care about is money and own the politicians so they can sway legislation.

Lolll I lovee that she gives him carts tbh those are my fav form of thc it’s fucked up the state is trying to make it to where she can’t give her son it as a medication my mom uses it as a medication she has her medical card she qualified after surviving pancreatic cancer she rly is a fighter she had to have surgery years before she got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer to cut certain tissue out of her breast’s because she had the BRCA2 gene and her mother had gotten breast cancer and died when my mom was a teen but she never knew she had a chance of getting pancreatic cancer until she went to the doctor for her side hurting but she thought she just had Escherichia coli or something that she needed a stool test for and she found out she had pancreatic cancer but they found it super early we were rly lucky that she went to the doctor if she wouldn’t have been having those side pains she would’ve never went and she most likely wouldn’t have made it like literally the only explanation I have for that is god making sure she stays on earth long enough he knew it wasn’t her time so he saved her I thank him everyday for it
