What Does A Minimalist, Zero-Waste Home Look Like?

Starting the year with the intention to declutter and create a more sustainable and zero-waste home is a great goal. However, it can be overwhelming to begin this journey. Here are six ways to utilize minimalism strategies to naturally create a more sustainable lifestyle.

Zero-waste is defined as living without creating any trash, with the best case scenario being no waste from your home going to landfills. Minimalists swear by the ‘one in, one out’ rule, which is to bring a new item into your home and dispose of it properly.

To get started with a zero waste lifestyle, there are several steps to mentally and physically set yourself up for success. Start by changing your mindset by decluttering first, buying organizing products later, and reducing what you bring into your home.

Minimalism is grounded in the idea that we should have fewer things, and zero-waste embodies upcycling, repairing, and hanging on to everything. Plastic-free, zero waste, and minimalism allow you to focus on what’s important by eliminating the waste and focusing on what’s important.

In summary, setting the intention to declutter and create a more sustainable and zero-waste home is a great way to start the year. By implementing these strategies, you can create a more sustainable and minimalist lifestyle that benefits both you and the environment.

  • Your home is bright, airy, and beautiful! I don’t think you’ve covered “low waste, eco friendly pet care” on your website yet, esp in terms of cat care (ie- best “eco” kitty litter and safe disposal). Could you please consider this, as I’m sure many of your subscribers would be interested in your opinion!

  • I’m sorry if the audio isn’t up to par guys! I shot this article TWICE with a articlegrapher and used her mic. There wasn’t anything else I could do in editing :/ I hope you love it anyway! Check out the blog post if you have any questions, I’ll be adding more to it today as well >>> shelbizleee.com/post/housetour

  • Such a beautiful house, again I am so happy for both of you to be able to have a place that is truly your own! Could you do something about what you do for low waste cat things, such as food, litter, their beds which are pretty cool, toys, etc, or just pet care in general!? I see a lot of “zero waste” people on here with pets and they never mention how to try to mention that with their animals. And could you do a tattoo tour too!? Lastly, are these brands considered greenwashing? Hello Bello children’s products in general, Babyganics ECOS both laundry and dish soaps, and Ökocat cat litter, which I love but doesn’t do so stellar with my electric cat box at the moment, and in general a more natural version of hand sanitizer? Having a child with sensory issues we go through a lot of hand sanitizer in a year…

  • Love love 💕💕 such a wonderful energy coming from your home! I was wondering if you could talk about the Amazon burning currently? Your website reaches many, and I’m not finding many people talking about it. Keep up the wonderful work! I just got married, and I’ve been telling my husband that our home is going to be all second hand. 👌🌱🙏

  • I’m so proud of you and your growth! I remember subscribing to you during the dumpster diving craze – and you started posting more about being ethical and living a more sustainable lifestyle and I couldn’t be any happier. Needless to say, I love the way yourself and this website has evolved over time. I can’t wait to see all the amazing things you accomplish in the future!

  • Can you make a article on how to recycle? My husband and I just moved into our new house and we are recycling but I don’t even know if I’m doing it right and the trash service we have wasn’t very helpful! Like what can and can’t we recycle? Do you have to wash everything out? How do you wash difficult or tough things out like bbq sauce or ketchup or something? Do you have to wash the labels off? I have soooo many questions!!

  • You are such an inspiration to me and it seems, many others. I think you are really helping the planet, making positive change, both in your own life and by inspiring others to do so in their own life. I’ve learned so much from your articles and I think, because of you I have become much more environmentally conscious. Thank you Shelby!

  • Literally just found your website yesterday and I’m OBSESSED. I have so much in my cart from earth hero and I’m making the purchase today. Trying to go zero waste and at least get my husband to be more conscious. Could you make a vid on the amazon rain forest burning, your thoughts, how our actions caused this and maybe what we could do to help? Love your website xoxo

  • I love how you have a cat and so many plants. My cat would chew on any plant she can reach so I always make extra sure I don’t bring plants in our house that even might be toxic for cats. Yesterday I splurged and got me abottled “terrarium” full with plants. Oh and love your couches…. One of our cats sometimes pees on the sofa so we can’t have anything other dann fake leather ( don’t worry the vet said the cat is healthy).

  • Totally off topic, but I’ve been perusal a lot of your articles while I declutter my house. And as im going through my closet, I’ve been really thinking how, in terms of clothing, the thing that I am the most guilty of is opaque leggings. I’ve gotten better with it over the years, but there’s still nothing like that comfy feeling of leggings as pants. But most of them are made all out of polyester, or a mixed fiber polyester. And at most, they only last for a year. I was wondering if you knew of any more sustainable alternatives, or if you’ve found any sustainable jeans that have a similar feeling; I’d love to know!

  • How is it possible that non of the cats care for your plants? I can’t put even one single plant in my cats reach without him knocking it over, digging in there or eating the leaves 🙁 do you do something to keep the cats away or are they simply not interestet in plants? Would love to hear more about it in your plant article 🙂

  • Hi Shelby. I’m asking here because I’m not tech savvy; sorry if it’s out of place. Do you know how one would go about getting a big company’s attention without Twitter? I’m trying to appeal to Amazon’s self interest in preserving their Amazon Fire SEO rankings and maybe encourage them to contribute to the Amazon fire relief efforts. I’d love to know how you would go about getting their attention.

  • Hello Shelbi, how are you and Madison and your sister doing? Sorry, I’m not sure if I caught her name in the grocery pick up article. I love the house. It’s beautiful. I can’t wait to see the article on your plants. I love plants also. Can you tell me what you think about the wood pellets for cat litter? I have seen a dumpster diving couple that use them. They get really big bags for around $6.00. I want to know if it is really worth switching over.

  • It’s beautiful! 💁🏻‍♀️ It doesn’t look too cluttered! The windows, lighting, and plants are just amazing! 😍 You guys worked hard to decorate in a mindful way and her handy skills are what I envy! I hope to one day own a small home with good lighting for plants and to be able to learn to do some handy work of my own. 💫

  • Hi I really like your style! The only thing that left me wondering was why you own a dryer – you live in a very warm climate.. I wouldn’t ever use one and I live in germany, where it is almost always autumn 😅 Dryers use up so much energy! But maybe you generate your own electricity via solar pannels…? If not… it is really no big deal hanging clothes to dry. They also will last you longer… warm greetings from germany, you are always very inspiring to me!

  • 🌈 I love your style and eco approach 🌟 my favourite room is the living space it looks like it would feel really open and big, the plants are gorgeous- I’d be too overwhelmed with that many though lol but I look forward to the plant tour I love all the different styles of plant hangers you have. Also I miss your dumpster driving articles-do you still go dumpster driver ?
