Educating the public and professionals about dog bite prevention, vaccination, and proper treatment can save lives. Teachers can use the M.I. theory to guide children in their learning experiences, such as the Entry Points approach. This program allows students to apply their multiple intelligences in five domains: arts, math, language and literature, music and drama.
To avoid rabies, keep your distance from wildlife and contact animal control instead of approaching injured animals. World Rabies Day celebrations raise awareness on rabies control and prevention. Educational resources such as videos, posters, games, and teacher’s guides can help educate children about rabies. Teach children to avoid contact with stray or wild animals, tease or bother them, and not examine or play with dead animals. Consult a doctor for a diagnosis using the direct fluorescent antibody test (dFA).
Engagement from endemic countries to include learning about dog behavior in school health education curricula can significantly prevent bite injuries and rabies. Education sessions empower children, teachers, and families with knowledge to protect themselves from bites, prevent rabies, and ensure access to post-exposure treatment. Lessons containing simple messages can improve rabies prevention through appropriate behavior, such as immediately washing bite wounds.
Education materials were developed specifically for young and vulnerable children about rabies and animal bite prevention. The most common carriers of rabies are raccoon, skunk, fox, and bat. Although rabies is 100 fatal after showing clinical signs, it is also 100 preventable by vaccinating dogs, avoiding dog bites, and promoting rabies awareness among communities. GARC and KCFI believe that educating children at a young age about rabies prevention will help prevent dog bites and rabies over the long term.

Why is it important to learn about rabies?
Rabies is a fatal viral disease that can be transmitted through bites and scratches from infected animals. It primarily affects the central nervous system, leading to severe brain disease and death if not treated promptly. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is crucial for preventing rabies development, which includes wound care, a dose of human rabies immune globulin (HRIG), and a series of four or five rabies vaccines. PEP is nearly 100 effective if administered promptly.
Although rare in humans in the United States, rabies poses a serious public health threat due to its high death rate in people and its presence in many wildlife species, with nearly 3 in 4 Americans living in communities where raccoons, skunks, or foxes carry the disease.
How can I prevent rabies early?
Rabies is a fatal but preventable disease that can be transmitted through direct contact with infected animals’ saliva or brain/nervous system tissue. It can cause neurological symptoms and lead to coma and death. The virus enters the body when the saliva of an infected animal gets into an open wound, usually from a bite. It moves slowly along nerves into the central nervous system, causing neurological symptoms and eventually leading to death. Rabies is common worldwide, with about 59, 000 deaths each year.
In the U. S., human rabies cases are rare, with fewer than three cases each year due to vaccinations being given soon after exposure. It is crucial to contact a healthcare provider and clean the wound thoroughly with soap and water.
How to teach kids about rabies?
To safeguard against rabies, it is imperative to halt one’s actions, maintain a stationary position, and utter a soft voice in the presence of an unfamiliar canine. The principal carriers of the disease are animal bites from animals such as raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats. To safeguard against infection, it is imperative to wash the affected area with soap and water and seek immediate medical attention.
What is the main way to prevent rabies?
Rabies is a fatal disease that is transmitted from animals to humans through a virus that attacks the central nervous system. It is primarily found in wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats. To prevent rabies, it is essential to vaccinate dogs and cats against the virus, keep them under control, leave stray or unknown dogs and cats alone, and not keep wild animals as pets. Additionally, make your property unattractive to wild animals and ensure that all warm-blooded animals are vaccinated against rabies.
How to prevent getting rabies?
To prevent rabies, avoid feeding, touching, or adopting wild animals, stray dogs, or cats. Ensure your pets are vaccinated for rabies, as they serve as a buffer between rabid wildlife and humans. Vaccines for dogs, cats, and ferrets are effective for one year, and revaccinations can last up to three years. Keep pets indoors at night and avoid attracting wild animals to your home or yard. Keep your property free of stored bird seed or other foods that may attract wild animals. Feed pets indoors and tightly cap or put away garbage cans. Board up openings to attics, basements, porches, or garages and cap chimneys with screens.
Bats can be difficult to keep out of buildings, so batproofing should be done during the fall and winter. If bats are inside, consult with your local health department about humane ways to remove them. Encourage children to report any animal bites or contact to an adult and not to touch any unknown animal. If a wild animal is on your property, let it wander away and alert neighbors. Contact a nuisance wildlife control officer for removal. Report all animal bites or contact with wild animals to your local health department.
Do not let any animal escape that has possibly exposed someone to rabies. Depending on the species, it can be observed or tested for rabies to avoid treatment.
How can you prevent rabies in children?
To prevent rabies in children, keep pets in a fenced yard or on a leash, select family pets carefully, never leave a young child alone with a pet, have pets vaccinated against rabies, and keep all shots current. Watch pets to prevent contact with wild animals. Rabies is a viral infection that attacks the nervous system and can be fatal once symptoms develop. A rabies vaccine or series of vaccines can prevent the illness.
The virus enters the body through cuts, scratches, bites, mouths, or eyes, and travels to the central nervous system. It is spread through an infected animal’s saliva and can pass between animals through biting or scratching.
How can we prevent rabies?
To prevent rabies, it is essential to vaccinate dogs and cats as required by law, keeping vaccinations current at all times. Animal control laws prohibit allowing animals to roam unsupervised, as roaming pets are more likely to have been exposed to rabies. Leave stray or unknown dogs and cats alone, and avoid wild animals even if they appear friendly. Do not fear wild animals, just respect and stay away from them.
Keep wild animals as pets, as local laws prohibit acquiring such animals as pets. Make your property unattractive by capping chimneys, sealing off openings in attics, under porches, and basements, feeding pets indoors, and keeping trash cans tightly closed. If you arebitten, scratched, or have contact with an animal, obtain the owner’s address and telephone number, immediately wash the wound thoroughly, report all animal bites to your animal control agency, police department, or health department for follow-up, identify and continue to observe the animal to aid its eventual capture, and get prompt medical attention.
If pets are attacked, call them away from the animal, confine them, and avoid handling them for at least two hours following the fight. Wear heavy gloves and thoroughly wash your hands after handling your pet, then contact your doctor or local health department for advice on direct exposure to rabies. Contact your local animal control agency for advice on testing the wild animal for rabies and follow-up for your pet.

How to explain rabies to a kid?
Rabies is a viral infection of warm-blooded animals, primarily found in skunks, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, and bats in North America. It attacks the nervous system and can be fatal if left untreated. In the United States, cats are more likely to be rabid than dogs. Information about animals carrying rabies is maintained by individual states, but region-specific information is best. The virus enters the body through cuts, scratches, or mucous membranes, and travels to the central nervous system. Once in the brain, it multiplies in different organs.
How to spread awareness about rabies?
Raising awareness about rabies is crucial for community engagement, requiring education and outreach programs to help identify signs, understand preventive measures, and report suspected cases. Strong veterinary services are essential for effective rabies control, requiring accessible care, adequate diagnostic capabilities, and well-trained professionals to promote responsible pet ownership and timely intervention.
What are the advice about rabies?
Rabies can be prevented through the administration of post-exposure vaccinations, while individuals at an elevated risk of exposure may choose to receive vaccinations prior to potential exposure. However, post-exposure treatment remains a vital aspect of prevention.

Whenever I was 7-8 years old, I had a cat Named Carl and I loved him I really did and I still do, well one day he came home after being gone about 3-4 days which isn’t unusual for an outside cat. Well he came back with Rabies but no one knew, he started acting weird and foaming at the mouth and then all the sudden he started attacking me, he jumped on my face ripped up the tissue and left me 3-4 inch scars down my eyes and cheeks that had to be stiched. I was in the hospital for 2 months getting treatment like shots and pills up my bum, it was not a fun time but I’m glad I can tell everyone the story. I do miss that cat though even though he left scars on me.
FOR THOSE OF YOU WITH ANXIETY: I think it’s important to note that the only reason rabies isn’t said to be the most deadly disease in the world, is because it’s not an easy virus to catch (especially if you live in North America, Europe, and or Oceania/Australia.) Precautions can be taken to ensure you don’t catch the disease, unlike some viruses like Covid or cancer (though I’m 90% sure cancer isn’t a virus). In the United States and Canada (where I live) it’s extremely rare to for a human to get rabies. In the US, there is usually 1-2 people annually who get it, and in Canada, 0 a year, with the occasional slip-up. Even if you were bitten by an animal, the chances of getting rabies are mind-blowingly low (unless you live in Africa or Asia). Bats are the most common carriers of rabies in North America. That being said, if you get bit by a stray animal or an animal you don’t know (such as another owner’s dog) it’s best to go to a clinic just to be sure, the next day at the earliest. Getting rabies is rare, though. Also, it’s worth noting that even if an infected animal bites you, it can’t transmit the disease until it starts showing symptoms, because the virus hasn’t reached the saliva glands yet. Rabies can only be transmitted by wild animals, and thank God it can’t spread from human to human, or else we’d have a problem.
I’m surprised that many still doesn’t know what to do after an animal bite. Whether the animal is rabid or not(you can’t be so sure). Do not wait to feel something. Just clean the wound with soap and running water and get vaccinated ASAP. That’s it. Update: July 9, 2023. I was walking when a stray dog sneaked behind me and bit my calf without making any noise. It ran away immediately and never to be seen again. On August 8 I took my 4th dose of vaccine. 🤞
I had this other dog, so like 2-3 months ago, I was petting her, and she got overexcited and playful and it scratched me in the leg, i believe. I don’t think it was vaccinated but it did not show any sign of the rabies symptoms, no aggression, no foam in the mouth, was basically like my other dog that I mentioned. I did not take any vaccines, am i fine, all i have right now is anxiety and a little itchy throat and that is about it. Am i fine?
i was bit by a dog seemed like it had an owner bc the owner yelled at the dog for biting me but i was bit still, i told my mom and since it was a small bite she said i was being overdramatic that i wanted to get tested, this happened two days ago but now im really paranoid because symptoms aren’t always showed right away, after i got home i cleaned the bite with alcohol, not sure if that would do anything to prevent from getting rabies but yeah, honestly im scared for my life
I got bite by a dog October 22 Went to hospital but they only gave me the vaccine shot and not the other one… They gave me vaccine in shoulder on that day (October 22) then again on October 25,october 29,November 5 and now its been 4 weeks aka day 28 after the bite.. Next vaccine is supposed to be 2 days from now on November 21…. Is this the right treatment??!
I got scratched by a cat on my leg 1,5 year ago, did not take the shots I just washed it off. one month ago I got sick in a very weird way, I had fever, fast heartbeat, non stop nausesia and anxiety/discomfort. Doctor have done tons of blood test but could not find anything related to flu or food poisioning or something, and my symptoms started to get worse I couldnt even sleep without taking sedatives because I feel like my body never calms down. I did not have hydrophobia but it was the food that I never could put in my mouth. Then I suddenly started to get better for some reason and now completely healed. Dont know it was the rabies or not but since it was lowkey weird I wanted to share
In Great Britain, because of being an island nation surrounded by water, we were mostly protected from the rabies virus by the rest of continental Europe where rabies virus were a problem. Animals such as pets had to be quarantined for 6 months at UK border control before being allowed into Britain. I think now Europe has done much to eradicate the disease since the 1970’s and we don’t hear if anything about rabies anymore.
A dog made a very small stretch on my hand with it’s teeth while we were playing. The dog doesn’t present any of rabies symptoms and neither do i, after 1 week and 1 day after the event. The anxiety only attacked me after i remembered i had the stretch, which was 2 days ago. I’m going to make a check up tomorrow because of raw hypochondria, since i don’t have any apparent reasons to worry. Update: I’m ok.
Copy and pasted from another comment section where I posted this People please pray for me. I’m not sure what’s going on but for these past 2 days I’ve been feeling really bad. 3 days ago I got bit by dog who was eating a raw chicken and the exact same day in less than an hour I started developing really weird attitudes. Ever since the first day I literally couldn’t drink any water but my appetite was “ok.” I went to sleep that night and I started feeling really hyperactive and I couldn’t sleep well. The second day when I woke up I tried drinking some water but I couldn’t because it seemed like brain was telling me not to. This is the day when I lost my appetite as well and I felt like I had a fever (lots of sweating) but according to the doctors that checked me my temperature was fine. Today, the third day in the morning I just felt like I didn’t want to get up from bed. I was having a little trip of nostalgia and I woke up sweaty yet again. I tried to eat but I was not feeling hungry. I tried to eat the chicken and I was able to swallow it perfectly but for some reason my brain was telling me not to eat the tortilla. I’m having a lot of trouble swallowing water and it’s making me very anxious. I noticed that I have more saliva in my mouth than usual and I can’t speak well with all this saliva developing in my mouth. I just hope that God has mercy for my soul and hopefully I can recover from this nightmare because this is not a pleasant experience.
someone, I have a question. I got bitted by my puppy, he didn’t show signs of rabies he’s only 1 month and a half old, The bite wasn’t that big, it was just a small bite and I didn’t really bleed or anything. Do I have rabies? I haven’t been vomiting, or anything that shows the signs of rabies, Do I have rabies still? I’m really worried and I don’t really want to tell my parents so I’m just trying to find out if I do. If anybody replies thanks 🙂
I want to ask something to anybody here I’ve had one year influenza vaccine in January And I recently got bitten by a cat so I’ve already had 3 vaccines for rabies and next time is gonna be my final one. So does the rabies vaccine work even when i’ve got influenza vaccine?? Please someone let me know this I’m worried
I talked and saw few doctors to get a shot after a squirrel bite me 4 days ago but everyone gave me wrong information. One ER doctor (toronto Michael garron hospital ER )said I don’t need to get a shot immediately. Usually work before 10 days. And he gave me antibiotics medicine and the cream that I can buy it from drug store. I Couldn’t believe it and some hospital staffs told me I need to my family doctor not ER. So confusing. My family doctor said I need to go to ER. Walk in clinic near my house said I need to go to ER. But the ER says I need to see family doctor. So weird and so horrible canadian medical system. I miss the medical system in South Korea.

I’m feeling super paranoid… My cat is showing symptoms of rabies and she didn’t bite me or anything but she slept with me in my bed yesterday. She started showing symptoms yesterday and im so scared… What if i her saliva got in me? I swallowed it or something? Oh god…. Tomorrow im taking her to the vet because there’s a chance it could be something else. But what if it rabies? Am i still safe after one day of exposure?
A couple of years ago when i play with my dog she always leave my skin scar from scratches and bites and she isn’t even vaccinated. And just now i fed my dog and his saliva got in my finger, then after 3mins i guess i get my capsule and the finger with a saliva of my dog i used that one to hold the capsule, is it danger or no? Please answer my question, thank you
I was playing with a very small puppy and later that day i fell from my cycle and when i returned home i saw a very small scratch on the skin so i dont know whether that scratch was from that puppy or when i fell from the cycle . So when the puppy bite or scratches does it hurt so that i could confirm that the wound was from felling from the cycle
I came here, because a few days ago, my dog bit my finger by accident while I was playing with her, there was no bleeding so I thought I’d be fine, but today morning, I woke up with my stomach hurting, and now this afternoon, I’m having some headaches. 😨 Pls respond to my comment, do I have rabies? 😨 Edit: my dog isn’t vaccinated and I’m extremely worried 😫
I just got bitten by my classmate’s dog the other day. I’m fkin paranoid now. I took vaccine shots yesterday but it takes a week or so for it to come into effect. I got bitten on my leg (right on the nerves) which might accelerate the virus (if it has) journey to the brain (endgame). Please help, I’m having insane headaches and throbbing/pulsation on the bite area and fever too.
I was kinda scratched by a dog while feeding them when visiting a tourist farm in South Korea. There’s no sign of wound or blood found on my leg, and the dogs appear fine, no aggressive or strange behaviour, and can respond to commands like sit or give hand. Did clean my leg with water and soap afterwards and use sanitiser after visiting the farm. Pretty sure nothing bites or licks me. Was saying to go see a doctor, but my Korean gf said the dogs defo have vaccinated and cared by the farm keepers (Domestic pets I guess?), basically no rabies in South Korea, and they literally treat their pets like their sons and daughters, so there’s no point to see a doctor. She even said the doctor won’t see me given that I don’t even have a visible wound. Didn’t trust her and went to see a GP after returning to my hometown, but the doctor brushed it off, saying there’s no wound and blood, and he doesn’t know where to help me. Should I treat it as everything’s fine, or go to consult another doctor?

I kinda forgot that rabies even exist and a unknown dog bit me. I was drunk so i didnt ask the owner if it was vaccinated. It was 25 days ago and i started thinking about it and im getting fucking paranoid. I fear all the time it makes me sick. I’m trying to get the vaccine but the only hospital in my city just doesn’t answer the phone so like yeah. Im so scared
Am I overthinking? I accidentally hit my dog while he was sleeping to which then he sort of bit me. I didn’t see any wound, nor bleeding, I didn’t felt any tingliness, or itchiness but right now my left hand is sort of weak. I am quite paranoid since I don’t know if I got bitten or not right now it is Monday it happened during Saturday what the hell should I do?
2.5 months back my stray cat scratched me i got little blood. The car was alright after 15 days observation. Yesterday i saw some rabies article from then I’m getting all those symptoms. I already have severe health anxiety idk if those symptoms are bcoz of anxiety. We both a unvaccinated. My parents are telling me to ignore. Oh god i can’t bear this anxiety
got chased by a dog last week and it jumped on me a bunch then tripped me, I think I just scraped up my arm from the fall, but I’m paranoid, I had a severe headache half a week after for two days, now feel like I have a cold, it didn’t look like a bite and I don’t think it bit me but I’m freaking tf out
I accidently got bitten by my dog, when he was play biting me I flinched so I got a small scratch on my thumb it didn’t bleed, but I am having a really bad anxiety attack right now. Should I need to get the shot? I think my dog is not rabid since he rarely goes out and is not showing any symptoms of a rabid dog.
ZealousidealRuin8068 Layperson/not verified as healthcare professional 9h Feel like I have rabies after a cat bite in. 202 in 2020 and all people that were around the cat have symptoms similar to my symptoms doctors say can’t have rabies for 2 years no vaccines and the cat has died 3 weeks after and had a litter ready after the first bite but then she’s second attacked me about 2 weeks later and then after that she died

Ik this sounds stupid but someone please help me. About 6 years ago I was in Mexico eating tacos when A dog walked up to me. He seemed friendly with no signs of rabies. Anyway I fed him food and I’m about 50% sure I fed him straight from my hand. And obviously i got saliva on my hand. I continued eating my food (I dried the silva off) and thought nothing of it. 6 years later I am curious if anyone knows this could be a case where rabies was present. And it has just take 6 years and still no signs are showing. Or if I’m just being an idiot. Thank you for your time.
Our dog bites me three times and we observe him in 14 days. he didn’t die in that days but died just a week later. Am I still safe or what? It’s been a year tho. But the bitten area is dark and has a scar. I got vaccinated but I didn’t finish the vaccine shots cuz we don’t have enough money for that. I hope someone can answer me.

But I did the complete course in a span of 9 months
Sir, i just got a dog bite, and he is not vaccined,. and he does not show any symptom. The problem is not everywhere in Sri Lanka is locked down, I am a foreigner monk living in a monastery. Hospital also closed. There is a saying that even dog has rabies without symptoms, means his saliva doesn’t contain virus. Isn’t it? Thanks .
A stray pitbull licked my hand and I have small cuts on my fingers because of the change of season and my hands have dried up abit which have causes these smallndry cuts.. and now I have a slight tingling sensation in my throat and I’m not sure what to do. When the animal welfare arrived they said he has rabies as they observed the clattering of his jaws at a slight notion stating that it’s the early stages. I’m honestly not sure what to do. The sensation appeared in my throat about an hour after the dog licked me and I’m not sure if it would occur so soon though, any expert advice or opinions?
I got bit by a dog about 16 days ago. I bit me on my pants but did not tear. I looked at it saw a small bruise and 2 very tiny red marks about half inch apart. It did not bleed. When I washed it with water and soap there was no stinging. I even put lemon juice and still no sting so I thought maybe it didnt break the skin. After about a week the bruise was completely gone and the 2 tiny red marks look like tiny brown freckles. You can barely see it. But after 14 days I got a fever and a headache. The headache is now gone after less than 2 days. But i think i still have a fever. Do i have rabies?

Help, someone please respond, I was playing with a stray Dog like 8 months ago and I more than likely had open wounds on my hand. I feel phlegm in my throat and I’m scared. I can drink and eat just fine and I don’t have a fever but I am VERY anxious. I’ve had headaches (light ones) and I’ve been itchy ( but the season are changing and I have allergies/eczema). I’ve been feeling like this for nearly a month now (and most people said if it were rabies I’d probably be dead by now) any reassurance?

And can someone please tell me if I do have rabies or not or do I have to inject an anti rabies😣 I don’t wanna die yett😭😭😭😭
