Bleach is the most effective way to lighten jeans, but a color remover can also be used to strip excess dye. To avoid chemicals, denim can be washed repeatedly in hot water to achieve a lighter result. The stone washing technique can be used to fade denim by adding bleach or other chemical agents to the wash cycle. For shoes, hydrogen peroxide can be used in the same way as bleach. To lighten jeans, fill a bucket with one part bleach to five parts lukewarm water and wear gloves. Prepare the bleach solution by adding 1 cup Clorox® Bleach to 1 gallon cool water and swirling to mix. Spray the bleach directly on the jeans until they are wet, leaving it on for as long as desired. Bleach the overalls in the bucket for a few hours, then dye them using tea or coffee. If the results are not light enough, try mixing one cup of bleach into a washing machine full of water. If the results are not light enough, repeat the process.
