📹 Biker Etiquette 101
In this video we demonstrate the appropriate way to introduce yourself in the Motorcycle Club world. By knowing the protocols set …
As an ex MC member, you’re pretty much spot on, except if you’re in colours ( club patches) you don’t take them off for anyone, club or not..also don’t interrupt 2 club members talking, if you’re not in the conversation, stay out of it… They’ll notice you wanted to say something,it can most likely wait ..ride safe 😎😎
Rolled for 10 years with a patch on my back. We always used our road names during any introductions to include any of the “big” clubs. Your government name was saved for intimate conversations at the appropriate time. Only those I considered my Brothers knew my “real name” everyone else knows me by my road name, and no my road name is not my YouTube name. Otherwise, I agree. It is all about showing respect as men.
I have been around MCs for over 40 years, and the one thing I learn is the word “neighbor” works all the time, it shows respect and friendship, I am bad at remembering names, so I started using Neighbor back in the 70s, and most get A kick out of it, after all we are all neighbors, this one guy I knew I think he thought him name was neighbor that was all I ever call him, everyone called him shorty he was 6’3″, I’m 6’5″ and could not call him shorty it just did not fell right so neighbor it was, before long everyone was calling him neighbor, he was in the Bandidos and A few hanged out at an ice house my grandfather hug out in when I was growing up he and the owner was on the same ship at pearl harbor and after the war they stayed friend’s. they always showed me the same respect I showed them, even if I was on A rice burner, and not my HD. you know how bad those AMF hd where, Hondas always ran.
Thanks for the article guys.. Bikers! remember! its all about making sure when the circle jerk is taking place, YOU GET INVITED!. so make sure new biker “friends” know you can really know the rules. Please make a article on assless chap etiquette also! when and when not to wear them and whether to have jeans or nothing on underneath.
Uhm…..no. You’re right about no gloves or sunglasses. That being said: -If you’re in a club, and in colors, you typically introduce yourself by your road name. -If you’re in a club, and in colors, ypu don’t take those colors off for ANYBODY. -If you’re not in a club, then 99% of the time, nobody is gonna tell you to take your vest off, unless you’ve got a patch on it that you ought not have, or that you didn’t earn.
I”ll take my vest off whenever I want to, not because someone asked me to take it off, who the fuck are they…. I am not a member of any club besides HOG and my vest means nothing besides a piece of clothing but I aint doing shit just because you asked for it. Thats a disrespect to me and I will make sure you show me respect one way or another.
what a damn joke, first off club names are ok, second off you should never remove your cut “IF YOUR LEGIT” you stand to put your whole club in jeopardy by doing so. last but not least every set operates differently so if this flies on your set great, but telling people in other places to do what works where you are is dangerous.
I’m not sure who taught you club rules but you will get people hurt making articles about shit, so Fist off if you are doing a proper introduction it should be Name, Affiliation and “Location,” location is vital, because of territorial boundaries, especially to other MC! Second Never remove your Cut, they will think you are a joke, if they have a problem with your Cut to the point they have asked you to remove it and you can’t be a man about it then it’s better to respectfully turn around and leave, pray you make it out the door, an affiliated Cut is apart of our soul, our brotherhood is imbedded into that patch when it is given and accepted and if you disrespect your own patch then you disrespect theirs as well. Last you’re right you do not reach out your hand but if they reach out their hand, you damn sure better take it.
Hey – no fare. I tried to find a way to contact you in the ‘About Section”. Your Etiquette comes from basic respect for another individual. That impressed me. I had an idea regarding Motorcycle Safety I wanted to share. And can you get involved? I am certified by, but am not associated with nor represent the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. I feel their message should resonate far more considering just in 2019, over 5,000 motorcyclists lost their lives in accidents, and some 70,000 were injured. I tried to contact them about an idea, but they seemed to be closed for the season. I wear a reflective vest and have thought all day how cool it would be to have an MSF Patch on its back. Could you imagine bikers of all sorts starting to see folks with the MSF patch, Nation and even worldwide, and then learning that it is a standard, if to be considered competent in one’s biking? There was a guy that illegally zoomed by today while I maintained cushion space at a light on Rt1 South. I wonder if instead he saw MSF patches on bikers sitting at a light, would he think about it, and what he is doing? Would he wonder what MSF was, and was he some fool? Now imagine MSF Rides and furthered awareness at Biker Fests etc. I feel eventually many bikers might want to get with the program and where the MSF colors too with their other patches. Thanks for reading this – be well
Jesus H Criminny. I am now finding myself carefully choosing which rock shirt would be appropriately without offending some sensitive biker blaming me for all of their scrupulous hard work they have done in their “MC” club. They fit right in with this cancel generation. I guess it is a serving their country thing.
I don’t wear a vest. If I did, it probably wouldn’t have a bunch of patches on it (well… maybe some of my unit patches from my grunt days on the front). I see no reason why anyone would ask me to remove my vest (short of bullying people), and less of a reason for me to comply (especially if I DO have some military patches on it). I get there’s this whole “three patches” thing and while I don’t really care about that, I don’t plan on putting MC patches on any jacket or vest. What I don’t get is if I’m in a public space (as opposed to their private property) they feel they have authority to tell me I can’t wear a vest (or pass them in an adjacent lane, or whatever). I really hope I don’t find myself in a situation to find out, but I’m pretty sure if force is applied to coerce me into doing/not doing something I legally and morally can do, it won’t end well….. and that doesn’t mean for me. Happy trails/lanes to all.
I hung up my spurs many years ago, waiting for the kids to all be grown. I am older now, maybe two old to sit one anymore but I had thought about something like Bikers for Christ or similar ministry. I’m not in recovery so wouldn’t be a fit for y’all but I thank God you are out there doing what you do. God bless, keep and protect you as you lead others out of the darkness.
I like seein’ veteran bikers on here. Ya hear it from people with decades of experience guys. Not some kids that make up a club, get tatto’s and start offering the ABC’s of being a biker. Then want ya to buy their tshirt crap. Listen to guys that have lived it like these guys. They dont need no loud rock and explosions in their vids.
Pleased to meet you sounds like you say that to everyone over ambitious. How do you know you are pleased to meet them when you just introduce the first time?. Maybe say that as you leave. A simple how you going, Nice scoot you have, I heard it on the road along side me and thought i had to check it out and then your name may be a more realistic start. Then ask some questions about their bike and complimenting some mods they have on it. People love it when others notice their effort they have put in etc. Then let them roll off about all the rest of the bike. Just listen and only talk when something really intrests you about aspects they bring up. Its simple they mention i had the heads all done, Machined, ported and polished with upgraded seats valves and springs etc and you can ask wow i noticed it sounded more lumpy the the regular stoke model. So its had the cams done obviously?, what cams have you got in it and who did the machine work?. Then let them keep talking by now your fully engaged with conversation and let it go at it own steam where it may. Don’t try to be someone your not if you don’t know bikes comment on the sound, the paint the geometry and general looks of their bike. Let them tell you about it. Its their soul, pride and joy. Just be yourself don’t be fake they will smell bullshit a mile away and you don’t want to come across as a narc or a dog. Take note of the patches on their vests. You don’t want to walk straight up to the President or SOA or a nomad or one with a number of colored wings on the front.
Maybe the pirates should spend time learning to ride well, before worrying about the silly erotic pirate rituals… 😂 Exhibit A: Almost every Harley dude I’ve ever seen dragging his feet just before stopping. Exhibit B: Stop and watch them at any gas station in route to Sturgis. It looks like a duck convention. Exhibit C: Terrified to lean and really stoked to drag (both kinds) 😉 I’m pullin’ your pony tail a little 😊
Even the military has less petty “rules of etiquette”. There are basic rules in life and in most organizations. I tight unit operates off those basic rules but imo, the rules around so called 1%ers & outlaw clubs is not borderline cringe but fkin cringe asf. Biker clubs these days remind me so much of how gangbangers/ dealers operate with all these rules about “respek”. I despise all government but clubs act like government and are just as corrupt. A major put off and why I solo.
Reaching out in service To Adonia Jeshua (i.e. Lord Jesus) John 17:20-23 20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. Ben riding since 1983, Thank you for your advice. And since i was an alter boy, and was confirmed, i get were the message went! But as far as taking of your colors, or as Hollywood calls it “cut”, any one i have ever known, That believes in the time put in and Brothers they have made, no brother is gonna drop his colorers for anyone! If you do, all those years with your brothers are gone, and prison, or death are no worse than that 👹
My dad’s name is Toughie that’s what he goes by it’s what everyone knows him by and very few knows his real name. It’s just the way it is and it might be for reasons best kept quiet and I suggest not to bug him about it because it’s for reasons best kept quiet 🤐 if you know what I mean. I didn’t even know his name until I was a teenager. So you got that one wrong brother. It’s the same with Big George & Balls! You don’t bug people about their real names either if you want to stay healthy! Many people have nicknames for reasons best kept quiet 🤐 You dont want to look like a fool after giving someone your real name and they don’t give theirs!
I was asked to take my patched up riding vest off by well known biker gang in Washington a few years back ! I told the 3 guys who walked up and demanded I take it off “I’m not taking off shit and this is a protect your ground state and by the article cameras all around YOU just walked up on me and I have 2 pistols with enough ammo to take all 3 of you out and all your buddies you brought with you! So go ahead and do what you do and ima do what I do !” They didn’t like that but IDGAF they ALL walked away smiling and talking shit! I paid for my shit and earned my patches through MY BROTHERS WHO TF IS ANYONE TO TELL ME WHAT I CAN AND CANT DO!! You can try that shit with normal people but with someone like me you’ll get killed trying to take something off my body!!
I’m 49 now but in my 20s I was a dirt bag that sold cocaine. One of my boys brought me to a pagan biker club and before I entered I got warned do not look at the man’s Old lady. Let me Telya I walk through that club with my eyes at the floor. Because I know them boys would’ve killed me if I looked at their old ladies.
Is black leather the only thing any biker gang has ever worn.. and do the names and intentions always have to be bad? And do all biker gangs expect the world around them to change for them.. when when my biker club gets big we aren’t wearing leather or holding anybody to any standards besides the usual, lawful standards.
I gave an elderly lady a compliment once, it all was about a book of hers. She turned on me sharply: Take off your glasses! I said: – I won’t Madam, I see nothing without them as they are ground to my view shortcomings; so Madam, you need to settle for the compliment I just gave you – those are not sold by the pound any longer around here. I don’t care especially for MC-club geezers but I’d always treat them respectfully; me too got the good manners stuff with the breast milk. If you don’t like my shades a sunny day so bugger off will you.
I solo ride. And some 10 40 yr old men thats had daddy issues and small penises surround me at a stop light. Rip me off my bike all because I had a t-shirt the said heathen with a skull under it. No mc patch nothing. I ride for the freedom of it and it’s like mc clubs are turning into the patch patrol police. There’s no freedom with all your rules.
These guys expect people to respect the etiquette and rules of their society and punish with violence those who are ignorant of them and breach these rules yet they couldn’t care less if they offend others and deliberately go out of their way to show their contempt towards the rules others have. Monkeys on a tree wanting a higher branch undeserving of respect
Its the same deal overseas man! When you met the head honcho and in order to keep his village from shooting at you or worse blowing your patrol to bits and pieces! At the meet and greet! I would take off my gloves and tacticool shades in order to gain respect from him! That and if he offered a drink/tea or food regardless you would drink it or eat it! And for the dudes who would not I would have them stay outside and pull security! 100%
🙂 I smile a respectful smile. This article was not what I expected. Good article. Thx. I was a cop for 25 years. I learned that if you treat them with respect, they’ll give respect back. They won’t be your friend, but won’t hurt you either. It’s all about respect. Its like you said. I had a member of the Bandidos befriend me once, knowing I was a cop. Never forgot that. Someday I’ll be in a Cafe or restaurant and see a Bandido. When I do, I’ll buy his meal.
Nothing so funny as a fool wearing a 1percent patch in public. It’s like telling cops here I am. Come and get me. And I’m guessing all “real ” bikers are automatically members of the Harley fan club and would never be caught dead riding any other bikes. Clubs should unify and become a united front instead of always fighting with themselves.
Thanks for the useful lesson. But one part isn’t practicable for me: I wear photocromic optical glasses. They automatically darken, when it’s bright outside. Without them, I don’t see a shit. So there’s no way I’d take them off. That’s not disrespect. And if respect requires to look the other in the eye during a handshake, then being respectful is impossible, for with my glasses on, they might not see my eyes, and with them off, I can’t see theirs.
Member/officer in an MC here… we don’t use our legal names… we shake hands and identify with our road names and club. Prospects must identify as prospects in that intro. Same with hang arounds. Also, if you’re patched, you never take off your cut for anyone other than your own club’s president, VP or Sgt. and there has to be a reason.
Well done. Spot on. There is nothing worse than perusal an otherwise uneducated or ignorant rider who doesn’t understand the protocols (or ignores them) getting confronted, surrounded, and chewed up one side and then the other by 1%’ers who took notice of their lack of respect, lack of protocols, and/or the posing/posturing. The initial approach is key and you demonstrated it perfectly.
When i meet someone new if it is summer i always take of sunglasses and gloves summer and winter if i have them on and present myself with my name. Thats basic my parents thaught me that it is imporntant to be polite and show respect when you meet someone new. If you show respect you get respect back.
Hey guys, I got a question. I´m a Harley rider and do not belong to any club, and am not looking to do either. However I love the impression and look of a vest with patches and am wondering what patches besides “1%”, “MC” and your title/position that is a no go if I´d patch a vest up for myself? Is there any articles on this subject maybe? Cheers
Great article. This is how I was shown years and years ago. Wether its with a biker or CEO. Another tid bit I would say is do not interupt/inject yourself into a group. If 3-4 guys are talking stand to the side away from listening distance. Make eye contact. Give them a minute or two to engage. If not then go about talking to others. You dont know what these folks are talking about so give them space and privacy.
Hey Jeff, Good info and a good idea to educate people on the rules for moving in the community. Only thing that I disagree on is taking off your cut. There are special circumstances for that, but in general you should be proud of what you represent. As a Christian you are representing Jesus, the king of kings.
thank you for the talk. i am just getting ready to ride again, and i am a bit scared of making a mistake to offend the bike club members. never being a club member in my life makes it hard to ride one of my bikes up to a bar where i know there are bike club members in it. i am 68 years young and love motorcycles. i am not too interested in joining a biker club, but i have very high respect for those who have earned the right to be in a bike club as a full member. thank you and much respect for you and your advice. that advice, to me, is greatly appreciated. i do not want to get my ass handed to me when all my intentions are just to enjoy my bikes and go have a beer or two at the local bar. it is just a lot of fun riding my 1100 and 1200 Japanese bikes, and drinking beers with others who like bikes too.imho,edwinstarr22 namaste everyone, and listen to the elder bikers because they are full of wisdom and experience. i respect all of you.edwinstarr22
I agree with everything you said except my cut is everything to me blood sweet and tears and only Brothers can me brother because they earned it just like I earned mine. We don’t take peoples cuts because we are mean. We have a lifestyle that we live 24/7. If I ask you for your cut it will be respectful 1 time. I believe in my God he guides me in my journey. Remember Respect is all anybody wants.
Rule fetishists. Religions, political parties, gangs; the culture’s are different, but the framework is the same. These folks need and thrive on everything being spelled out for them. And that’s ok, nothing wrong with it. We all need our own individual medicines. Just don’t tell me to take your medicine and I won’t tell you to take mine. The problems come when these folks experience others not following the rules they follow and seeing that as disrespectful. The opposite is true: expecting ME to follow the rules that work for YOU is the definition of disrespect. When your expectations become that others must respect you before you respect others, you’ve entered backwards thinking and that leads to selfishness and an inability to adapt; not a great long game. That sets you up for disappointment and confrontation because you live being reactionary instead of pro-active. A better life-strategy is to be respectful to others FIRST, and don’t expect reciprocation. If you get respect in return, you’re on the right path. If you get none, take a lateral step psychologically, then continue towards your goal. Don’t dwell. Don’t hang around to judge and react on other’s behaviors. Focus on your own, adapt, and keep moving forward. Don’t concern yourself with the path of others.
I’ve seen dudes get laid out over “brother”. If you’re not in their club, you’re not their brother. Their brothers are the ones they’d bleed with and for… You’re not that. I have a lot of respect for this article, especially the advice about what to do if someone tells you to take off your vest. I don’t ride with a club, currently, but I grew up in the culture and respect is the most important thing, so if you’re being told to take off your vest; it’s not a polite request. It means you are likely wearing it in the territory of a motorcycle club, and that’s territory they have fought for. Refusing to take you vest off is essentially spitting on everything they’ve worked for in their club, as well as the memory of anyone they lost along the way. Just take it off. Don’t try to be Billy badass and get defiant. Imagine you’re standing at the grave of someone you love and a stranger showed up and started behaving disrespectfully to the memory of your loved one. Would you want them to puff up and be defiant when you tell them to knock it off? It may not seem like it from the outside where we are sitting, but to them it really is the same thing. Do the right thing.
Where I used to live in California, my neighbor down the block is part of a MC and when he introduced other members of his club to us I always made sure to take my sunglasses and give them a firm hand shake while saying who I am. Honestly doing that is just the proper way to greet someone which my father taught me when I was a kid, so by doing that every time they rode by and we (as in my brother and I) happen to be outside they would either wave or give a head nod over to us.
