Summer wedding guest attire should be appropriate for the occasion and season, with guests often opting for casual attire due to the hot weather. Consider factors such as venue, destination, and dress code when choosing attire. For casual weddings, men can wear linen, cotton, or seersucker, while wool and silk blends or open-weave wool work well for formal celebrations. Silk and chiffon are also suitable.
For casual summer wedding attire, consider pretty, flowy dresses paired with sandals, an open-collared shirt, chinos, and boat shoes for women. Airy dresses and skirts, blended suit fabrics, floral prints, and functional footwear are ideal.
Soft, pastel colors, bold prints, or bright hues are excellent choices for summer weddings, but avoid wearing overly casual clothing like shorts or denim. Casual wedding guest dresses call for light breathable fabrics, such as cotton and linen, and bright and pastel color palettes. Grotts’ motto for a casual summer wedding is “floatal and flowy”, with dresses that are strapless, halter, or sleeveless.
Vibrant tones and floral patterns are most welcome during summer weddings, such as Chlorophyll green, azure blue, and fuchsia pink. For laid-back weddings, a cute dress or chic skirt and top combo is ideal, and a floral midi dress with comfortable sandals works great. By following these tips, guests can stay cool and comfortable while adhering to traditional guest etiquette.

📹 What to Wear to a Spring or Summer Wedding
Are you attending a spring or summer wedding this year? Today I’m sharing wedding guest dress ideas for women over 50.
I love the straw handbag, chunky-heeled shoes, wrap, and shades that you put with the first dress, but the first dress is not my style. I like the beautiful fuchsia dress that you are wearing. I love the colors in the pretty dark blue wrap dress, and I would like it in a geometric or abstract pattern, or vertical stripes. I usually don’t wear floral patterns; I look frumpy in florals. 🙂 😊 I love the hoop earrings and Ted Baker bag! The third dress is fabulous and I love the colors! I love the navy wrap and clutch.
Beautiful choices…I especially love the more formal dress with the Navy underlay. Just stunning! I am one who does wear sheer panty hose and prefer that over my pasty white legs! I stay out of the sun now due to a basal cell issue, so hose just work for me. I was very much interested in your comment about the dress shrugs. I have lots of wraps and will be packing the shrugs away and subbing in my wraps. I do see what you mean about the overall look. So glad you mentioned that.
If we’re going back to more outdoor weddings this summer – My best friend’s daughter got married in the middle of summer, over 100 degrees, high humidity, no breeze – outdoors in Oklahoma. Oppressive weather conditions. I knew I’d wilt and didn’t want to be embarrassed by excess sweating (although most people in attendance were sweating like crazy). I took a very lightweight straw tote for a handbag and packed in a folding fan. In the tote, I also added 3 gel freezer packs that I kept in the freezer until walking out the door. During the ceremony, I kept the tote (with freezer packs) across my lap, which was very cooling, with my hands and wrists lying on top. I kept cool during the ceremony. During the reception, I used my folding fan and had others begging to borrow it. Gentle hint for those hosting outdoor weddings in excessive heat – offer guests iced drinks for sipping early on – even during the ceremony. Don’t wait for the reception.
So grateful for this website. You are so pleasant to listen to and I really need this information. My lifestyle allows me to wear primarily jeans and tops, but I have an upcoming event where I need dress up. Thanks to your attention to every detail of the outfit with links, the process of finding something I like and is appropriate to the occasion will be MUCH easier. Big thanks.
Thanks, Kay. I thought your tips were spot on! I am going to my son’s, 1950s theme wedding this summer. I found a beautiful, blush-pink dress at my Dillard’s Clearance Store for … wait for it … $20!!! And a darling, little 50s-style handbag to go with for … $25!!! Such a shopping victory. The catch is, I need to alter the dress, but if I can pull it off … fabulous. BTW: this grandma does not go without hose. Don’t want to frighten anyone. Carrying 6 babies have taken their toll on my legs. I find that wearing support hose with longer, below-the-knee dresses is a very pretty, classic look, provided they are worn with closed-toe-shoes as you mentioned. And … an added plus, no need for Spanx, because the support hose have plenty of firming power. Haha. It’s when women wear hose with above-the-knee styles that looks, sorry ladies, very tacky. Great tips!
Beautiful. Thank you for all of the added info. You think of a lot of potential questions in your descriptions. It is difficult to see the jewelry. Maybe consider showing a close up of the jewelery on a black background. I love your style and it would be nice to see that detail too. Beautiful lady. Beautiful spirit.
Beautiful article. Love the advice about dressing for a wedding. I purchased a dress for my son’s wedding last year that I never got to wear. Fortunately they are able to have a vow renewal in May. Unfortunately my style has changed a little bit after following you all year. That is a good thing. I know it’s about them and whatever I wear it won’t matter because this sweet couple can finally have the day they planned.
I love these vidoes so much. I have a huge favor. Since you are so adorable, I bet your mom is too. I would love to see your suggestions for us that are over 70. Yes, it is a terrible age but I am in my early 70’s. I want to look appropriate, and I think I could do the things you have shown for March the classic look, but other looks I am not sure. What a fun article for you to have your mom and you do a fashion show too. Thanks
What are your thoughts, Kay, on wearing a black dress with a large, floral pattern down one side? It has a narrow, tan belt and a bateau neckline, with a slim silhouette. I love the dress but the main colour is black and I’m not sure if that is appropriate. The wedding I’d wear it to is next May, outdoors under a tent. Could I wear a light coloured shawl or throw with it (matching the coloured flowers) to make this work? I would welcome your advice. I love your articles and fashion advice. I’ve found it very helpful. You are so authentic and honest in your delivery.
Kay, I so enjoy your articles, and learn so much. My daughter needs advice on what to wear to a late October wedding in Traverse City, Mi My daughter is petite, 5’2″, and 140lbs, and dresses normally in jeans and tee shirts, she loves midi dresses. She is considering slacks and nice top. She could really use your advice. I would appreciate your input.
First dress seems very simple and feminine, the shoes you chose are way to heavy and casual. Be careful when choosing your shoes bc they are just as important as the dress. I would venture to say the same thing about the purse you chose. You should never have more than a clutch for any evening affair, especially a wedding. Finally take the time to show thee full dress, we can only see the top. Sorry.
My youngest son is getting married in June in a garden style wedding. I am having a tough time finding a dress. I have one solid navy long dress as a back up. However, I would prefer a midi or maxi which is way more casual. I am not a fan of florials but prefer more contemporary prints so my search continues.
My son is getting married in August at the Swan House in Atlanta. It is a very formal affair. The moms are wearing floor length dresses and I continue to scour the Internet for that perfect dress. However, each of these dresses would be perfect for the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. The Eliza J dress is gorgeous. I might have to order that one. I loved the embroidered dress but since I have hips, I doubt it would work. Thanks for sharing and I love the idea of a wrap instead of a shrug.
For those of us who are petite (5’3″ and under), the Eliza J. dress has a pattern that is too large and busy. You carry it very well because you are tall. But as a petite who is just a little over 100 pounds it would completely swamp me. I always wear subtle florals or classic patterns that are smaller and low contrast. They suit me so much better, and the dresses don’t date as quickly as those with a louder print.
This article was perfect timing for me, as I have a wedding to attend in two weeks. Ordered the navy dress from Dillards! I live in south GA so we do not have access to Dept store shopping areas. Thank you for sharing this!! Can’t wait for it to arrive! Not sure if I will wear navy pumps or beige cork high heel sandals. I still ponder over the hose issue.
Kay, So happy Rachel told me about your website! We have 7 weddings in the next 5 months so this topic has been on my mind. So far, I’m going to stick with a favorite navy lace trumpet dress for the fanciest events. I’m hoping a navy linen dress can be made a bit fancier for the event I’m not sure will be air conditioned in August. I’ve had great success with open toe hosiery and encourage you to try them again; it requires the correct shoe/sandal to wear them but I agree with covering up the 50+ legs after having 7 children. All the best, Julie Carns
I love all of them but especially the long sleeved floral. Gosh that one is pretty for a spring outdoor occasion! When you model it, the skirt shows beautifully! I may go ahead and buy that one for an upcoming May wedding. I’m nervous to order online not knowing how the brand fits me. I’m tallish and slim. Sometimes things are too loose on my upper body.
Thank you for your wedding outfit tips. I have a question-I am 5’4″ and have found a tea length dress in a petite size with a “high low” hem. It is different than any other style of dress that I’ve worn before, both in the style and the pattern. My daughter says it is very flattering so I think I’m just going to get brave and wear it. It has a purple ( lilac ) pattern with some black and white in it. What style and color of shoes do you recommend for someone who doesn’t wear high heels and do you think that a tea length dress is a good choice for my height? It is for our daughter’s casual wedding. The dress is called a Lena style and is on the Lane Bryant web site and I bought it in a 14 petite. Thank You!
Thank you, Kay. I am one of the folks who requested this subject for your consideration. Great job! You look amazing in all of the dresses. I’m 65 and not really a floral type of person. I chose a sequin dress for an evening wedding which is in the mail on the way to me. The wedding is indoors. It is long sleeve and a fit and flare style. It sparkles because I feel like I want to sparkle but hopefully not too much. I’ll see when it comes. Thanks for all the other tips about hose and foundations. Excellent!
The panty hose dilemma is real, but if you wear something really sheer and nude, then they don’t cover the veins etc. that you mentioned. I would prefer a midi length dress, so that only the ankles and feet are showing and you eliminate the need for hose. (As a petite woman, I have never found pantyhose that fit so really dislike wearing them, and on the odd occasion that I have to wear hose, I choose the thigh high – no tight waistband and they definitely stay up).The faux fur wrap reminds me so much of what my mother wore back in the 50’s!
