Stretches For Tight Denim Skirts?

To make a skirt bigger, remove the waistband and insert additional fabric or elastic to provide more room. Other sewn alterations include adding a stretchy waistband and putting elastic in a zippered waistband. Non-sewing methods include stretching, applying extenders, or using bobby pins. In this DIY YouTube sewing tutorial, sewing educator Anastasia Chatzka shows how to alter a skirt at the waistline to make it bigger and fit you perfectly.

To make a denim skirt bigger, measure both the skirt and yourself. Updating the waistband of a denim skirt is a practical and creative solution for those skirts that are too big. To tackle this alteration, gather your sewing materials and try to stretch the denim by boiling water in a pot big enough to fit the denim before placing it inside. Boil the denim inside the water for about 20-30 minutes, turning it over every 5 minutes.

If the denim is still too tight, wet it in warm water and then lay or stretch on a flat surface to dry. If the denim is still too tight, use two safety pins and a rubber band to secure it. Another option is to put your hands inside the jeans and use your arm strength to push apart the opposite ends of the waist, hip area, thigh area, or calf.

Fill a spray bottle with lukewarm water and spray the area you want to stretch out by either wearing them or gently pulling the area with your hand. This method can be a creative and practical solution for those who have a denim skirt that is too big to wear but too beloved to throw out.
