Should Denim Jackets Be Soaked?

In this episode of the Denimhunters Podcast, the discussion revolves around the decision to soak raw denim jeans or jackets. The podcast discusses three approaches: soaking raw denim, washing them in warm water, and soaking unwashed denim with a non-wash finish. Soaking allows for a more personalized fit, especially for jackets that are slightly too big or have a more fitted look. It softens all tension points across the garment, reducing friction and preventing ripping and abrasion.

Some denim fans prefer to keep their jeans raw, while others opt to soak them in warm water before drying them in the sun. For unsanforized denim, it is essential to soak the garment in warm water to remove all shrinkage before wearing it. However, washing raw denim is not recommended as it can cause discomfort and make the jacket unfit.

To soak raw denim, lay the jacket in water for 30 to 45 minutes, then drain and rinse with fresh cold water. Tub-soak all unwashed, unsanforized denim for at least 10 minutes in cold water with a few minutes worth of detergent. For sanforized denim, soak in cold water for at least an hour using a basic and mild detergent. The main reason to soak sanforized denim before wearing it is to remove some wax and starch from the finish.

To remove shrinkage from unsanforized denim jeans or jackets, fill a bathtub or bucket with warm water (40ºC). Turn the garment inside out and dip it in the water. Allow the garment to soak for about an hour without stirring to prevent excessive loss of indigo. If the garment floats, sink it with cans or objects. Once dry, hang the garment from a clothes hanger and allow it to dry completely. Once dry, the garment is ready to wear, as it has lost all shrinkage and perfectly fits your measurements.

Raw denim contains the highest amount of indigo and has not been distressed in the factory. It will gradually acquire a unique character over time and washing, and will be worn according to the fabric and user’s use. Raw denim is a blank canvas, and no two jeans will fade in the same way.

Does soaking denim fade?

The Hurdle is a stage in the denim process where the jeans need to be worn to progress to the next stages. To accelerate progress, soak the denim before wearing it to remove starch and stiffness, which may sacrifice some contrast fades. If keeping the jeans dry, the first month will be challenging, but activities that force the denim to flex and stretch can help. Activities like cycling, taking stairs, or doing squats and deep knee bends can help clear The Hurdle quickly.

The Long Straight (50-150 wears) is a significant stage where the jeans relax around the waistband and behind the knees, allowing for easier hand-in and-out of pockets and fastening the top button. After four months, Frederick has cleared The Hurdle and jogged down the Long Straight. This progress is crucial for progressing through the stages of denim wear.

Are you supposed to wash denim jackets?

Regular cleaning is essential for maintaining the appearance and smell of a denim jacket. It is recommended to wash it if there are stains or visible soils, wear it in hot or rainy weather, or after several weeks of use. Although a denim jacket can be put in the washing machine, it is important to check the care tag and adjust wash settings accordingly. Hot water may cause colors to fade and fabrics to shrink, so it is recommended to choose a cold cycle. Hand washing is often the gentler cleaning method, and some jackets may have “hand wash only” instructions on their care label. Follow these instructions and wash the jacket by hand.

At what age should you stop wearing denim jackets?

The classic denim jacket is a versatile wardrobe staple that can be styled with a twist from Mermade Brooklyn. The author was introduced to Meredith’s work through Annie’s post, “How to Elevate Wearing Your Denim”. They found a patchwork jean jacket from Ralph Lauren and wanted to have her work her magic on it. Meredith added their name and vine down the front, and the author paired it with Native American Jewelry, a Brixton hat, and an older CP Shades Lily Skirt. Many of these jackets without Meredith’s embellishment can be found on eBay. The author chose a different style from Annie and Mary Ann to showcase different options for wearing the jacket.

To maintain the quality of your jeans, follow these steps:

  1. Wash on a delicate cycle with cold water, ideally with dark-colored clothes, to avoid shrinking or bleeding. Avoid using harsh chemicals in laundry detergents and avoid fabric softener. Use liquid detergents like The Laundress or Mrs. Meyer’s liquid detergent for less wear and tear.

  2. Let jeans air dry in a well-ventilated space to prevent shrinkage and maintain shape. If you want to slightly shrink jeans, wait until they are barely damp before drying briefly.

By following these steps, you can ensure your jeans last longer and maintain their shape.

Should you soak raw denim before wearing?

Soaking jeans not only breaks down the fabric’s rigidity, making them more comfortable to wear and easy to break in, but it can also extend their lifespan. Soaking softens all tension points across the garment, reducing friction and preventing ripping and abrasion. Some denim fans prefer to keep their jeans raw for unique fades, but this can harm the fabric. Soaking jeans allows for natural fades and ensures the selvedge investment remains strong.

To soak jeans, fill a clean tub or receptacle with enough water to ensure the jeans are fully submerged. Fasten all buttons on the jeans and turn them inside out to reduce stress and ensure even shrinkage. Gently place the jeans in the bath, allowing the oxygen to escape from the fabric. If the jeans are heavy, use old coffee cups to weigh them down in the water. The process can last up to an hour.

In summary, soaking jeans not only softens the fabric but also prolongs its lifespan. To begin, fill a clean tub with enough water to ensure the jeans are fully submerged. Fasten buttons and turn the jeans inside out to reduce stress and ensure even shrinkage.

Is it OK to not wash denim?

The notion that jeans should never be washed is a fallacy. While infrequent washing may preserve color and shape, it can also result in the accumulation of dirt, oils, and bacteria, which can negatively impact both the fabric and the skin. It is crucial to strike a balance between washing and implementing appropriate care techniques to ensure the continued cleanliness and optimal condition of your jeans.

  • Any denim that is 💯 cotton will shrink at least one or more inches, perhaps if the denim is pre-shrunk or Sanforized will not shrink but anything else will, also depending what temperatures you’re using in the water or if you dried on a dryer machine or even if you hand dry on the sun, denim is cotton and it will shrink, Perhaps if the denim has nylon in their fabric will not shrink as much, shrunk denim not. In any case buy jeans or jackets your size bigger to avoid this situation, best wishes and enjoy

  • What a nice test right there mate. Can you please help me a little too about my hesitation? I am 180cm guy with about 78-80kg with 40-41 inch chest usually wearing M. Would you recommend me getting M size and washing it carefully like I wash my wool clothes to avoid shrinkage or getting and L and putting it to 40 or 60 degrees in the washing machine? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work. Subscribed!
