📹 6 Signs You’ve Been Emotionally Abused
In this video, we’re going to discuss emotional abuse, also known as emotional trauma syndrome (Cptsd). Emotional abuse can …
What is the aftermath of emotional abuse?
Emotional and psychological abuse can have severe short- and long-term effects on both physical and mental health. Victims may experience confusion, anxiety, shame, guilt, frequent crying, over-compliance, and powerlessness. They may try to bargain with the abuser or change their behavior, often placing blame on themselves. Severe and ongoing abuse can lead to a loss of self-worth and doubt about abilities, making it harder to leave the relationship.
Long-term emotional abuse can result in health problems like depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and chronic pain. It is crucial to seek emotional support to help deal with the trauma of emotional and psychological abuse. For more information, see the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health, Emotional and Verbal Abuse page and Effects of Violence Against Women page.
How to self soothe after emotional abuse?
To cope with deep-seated emotions, it is essential to soothe yourself as if you were speaking to someone you truly love and want the best for. Write down positive affirmations when grieving, such as “I am worthy of true love and respect”, “I have a right to all my feelings. I deserve peace”. This will help curb self-judgment and self-blame, which are common in abuse survivors. Accepting and showing compassion towards yourself reminds you of your own care and kindness.
A daily exercise regimen, such as running, dancing, or walking in nature, can save your life after abuse. Exercise releases endorphins and lowers cortisol levels, potentially replacing the biochemical addiction formed with our abusers. This addiction is formed through chemicals like dopamine, cortisol, adrenaline, and serotonin, which exacerbate the bond with our abusers through the abuse cycle. Exercise can also counter the physical side effects of the abuse, such as weight gain, premature aging, sleep problems, and illness.
How do you release trapped emotional trauma?
To facilitate the release of repressed emotions, it is recommended to acknowledge and connect with feelings, work through trauma, engage in shadow work, make intentional movement, and practice stillness. The term “emotional baggage” is used to describe the negative experiences that are carried by past traumas or negative experiences in life, relationships, or careers. Additional techniques may also prove beneficial in the release of repressed emotions.
What is hypervigilance after emotional abuse?
Emotional hypervigilance is a common response to trauma, childhood abuse, assault, or natural disasters. It can be triggered by an anxious-insecure attachment style, where individuals are constantly sensitive to their partner’s moods and emotions. This can lead to resentment and affect relationships in various ways.
Identity issues can arise as hypervigilant individuals may neglect their feelings and lose their sense of identity. Clinginess can also occur as hypervigilant individuals fear abandonment and may become incredibly clingy to their partners. Emotional outbursts can occur due to difficulty regulating emotions, leading to intense emotional outbursts. Trust issues can arise as hypervigilance leads to constant scanning for threats, which can affect relationships and friendships.
In conclusion, emotional hypervigilance can be a significant issue in relationships, as it can lead to neglect of feelings, emotional outbursts, and trust issues.
How does the body react to emotional abuse?
Emotional abuse can have a range of physical and psychological effects, including elevated heart rate and tremors, anxiety, and feelings of guilt. Such abuse can occur from a variety of sources throughout an individual’s life, including multiple perpetrators. In order to facilitate healing and recovery from emotional abuse, it is imperative to seek assistance from a duly qualified professional, as the effects can be both immediate and long-term.
What does emotional abuse do to a woman?
Staying in an abusive relationship can have long-lasting effects on your physical and mental health, including chronic pain, depression, and anxiety. It can lead to changes in behavior, feelings of shame or guilt, powerlessness, hopelessness, manipulation, and unwantedness. Gaslighting is the term used when an abuser makes you feel like you are losing your mind or memory, making it difficult to remember events and make decisions. This can cause stress and overwhelm, making it essential to seek help and end the abuse.
How to accept you were emotionally abused?
Emotional abuse is a form of control that involves using emotions to criticize, embarrass, shame, blame, or manipulate another person. It is common in dating and married relationships but can occur in any relationship, including friends, family, and co-workers. Emotional abuse is characterized by a consistent pattern of abusive words and bullying behaviors that wear down a person’s self-esteem and undermine their mental health.
The underlying goal of emotional abuse is to discredit, isolate, and silencing the other person, making it one of the hardest forms of abuse to recognize. It is essential to make a commitment to oneself, practice self-compassion, reach out to loved ones, seek counseling, and talk to others who have experienced emotional abuse.
How do victims of emotional abuse behave?
In an abusive relationship, victims often use self-protective coping strategies such as denial, minimization, addictions, arguing, defensiveness, rationalization, compliance, detachment, and dissociation. These strategies are often cyclical and inconsistent, allowing victims to wait it out over time. Emotional abuse is easier to block out, making it easier for victims to ignore it. Abuse is a progressive disease, with occurrences of abuse increasing and chronic disrespect and cruelty becoming commonplace.
The relationship becomes a system where the abuser does whatever they want, and victims become programmed to cope with it. Victims may comply, numb out, take anti-depressants, live in a detached state, and pretend everything is fine. Examples of children acting out their unspoken hurts within a dysfunctional family system include the scapegoat, golden child, and family mascot.
What is rumination after emotional abuse?
Rumination is an invisible trauma bond that keeps individuals locked in pain, even after years of no contact. It is likened to a sweater snagged on a nail, with family narcissism and scapegoating being the nails. When we ruminate, we are not in the present moment, making decisions based on our needs, acting in our best interest, or actively participating in our lives. This leads to a fog of self, distorting our identity, and taking up mental space.
The invisible trauma bond also perpetuates people-pleasing and fawning behaviors, keeping us in “survival mode”, preventing us from making clear decisions. It fogs up our sense of self, distorts our identity, and takes up a lot of mental space. By hyper-focusing on past experiences, we lose our footing in the present moment, wondering how we will find safe land and recovery.
Physiologically, the body doesn’t know the difference between rumination and experiencing, as the brain “re-situates” us in a trauma/unsafe scenario, activating the body’s survival responses. This can lead to feelings of narcissism, fawning, and a sense of being trapped in the past.
How to release repressed trauma?
Trauma can be released and expressed through various methods, such as mind-body practices like yoga and meditation, which promote bodily awareness and relaxation. Therapies like EMDR target traumatic memories that are stuck in the body. Trauma can be stored in various areas of the body, such as the brain, spinal cord, and brain. It can be difficult to release trauma, as it is stored in various locations and can be difficult to recover from.
There are various ways to release trauma, including therapy, which can help in releasing traumatic memories. The process of releasing trauma can vary, but it is essential to seek help when needed.
Heidi Moawad, MD, a neurologist with over 20 years of experience, focuses on mental health disorders, behavioral health issues, neurological disease, migraines, pain, stroke, cognitive impairment, and multiple sclerosis. She offers tips on how to release trauma and how long it takes to recover. Additional resources and infographics can also be found to further support individuals in their journey towards healing.
Where is emotional trauma stored in the body?
Early attachment trauma is remembered somatically, meaning it is stored in the body on a subconscious and autonomic level. This process occurs through visceral responses, autonomic and muscle memory, and habits, with the intention to avoid negative emotions and move towards safety. However, when experiencing somatic symptoms, it is often unclear whether the trauma is from the past or present, leading to confusion. The opposite of somatic flooding is freezing, which is an expression of somatic dysregulation and trauma stored in the body.
In freezing, the person is immobilized and cannot regain appropriate internal resources to resume normal functioning. This process can be debilitating and can lead to confusion between the past and the present.

Narcissists––usually men––have a high propensity for manipulating any situation in their favor because of their need to assert …
This article spoke to me and is me on all levels. Sadly, I’m always walking on eggshells and trying to please everyone before myself, I’m apologetic for everything, even when nothing is my fault. Ugh This article triggered a lot within. It just let’s me know the work has began! And there’s loads to do! I’m learning to set boundaries and trying to love myself for the first time. Totally easier said then done But I got this!!!! We got this!!! 💜🙏🏼💜
As someone who was emotionally neglected and abused for the majority of my childhood, this is fascinating to see. My sister exhibits more of the emotional numbing and shutting down to others. She doesn’t open up to anyone, and if she does feel something, it causes her to have an inconsolable meltdown. But I have more of the anger issues, and blaming myself for everything (as the oldest sibling, I should have helped more, etc.). Thank you for brining these to light, it really helps to know that some of the things I experience aren’t always just because I am a bad person.
Tbh as a dude, I used to struggle with accepting vulnerability because I’d get backlash whenever I did. My message to others struggling with trying to look ‘strong’ by avoiding feelings is that you’re much braver than you think you are for even accepting you’re struggling in the first place; you’re confronting something you’ve been taught to avoid, and that takes a lot of courage.
I’m glad emotional Abuse is being talked about more often in these articles because physical abuse happens more often because your left with marks and stuff but the entire world always forgets about the emotional standpoint of it as well. As humans we come with feelings that are always ignored or misunderstood which is a problem in the world. We look at the marks that abusers leave but never look at how it makes us feel on the inside. We are suffering not just on the outside but inside as well. So I’m happy that they talk about emotional abuse more because the society we live in today is careless and no one really cares about your feelings. Thank you so much Psych2G0 for bringing this to your website because it is definitely well needed❤
I was mentally and emotionally abused by a coach and it took me so long to realize what had happened to me was abuse. I miss heard a different coach and messed up and I started apologizing like mad and she stopped me and said “why are you apologizing? It’s not your fault” and let me tell you that simple question turned my life around
✨ Timestamps and Major Points ✨ 1. 0:40 A kingdom of isolation 2. 1:23 Reign of worthlessness 3. 1:57 Fortress of avoidance 4. 2:34 Blame game 5. 3:12 Battle of outbursts 6. 3:56 Conceal don’t feel (DONT LET THEM KNOWWWWWW, WELL NOW THEY KNOWWWW LET IT GOO LET IT GOOO) I am truly sorry for the frozen reference. Anyway, if any of you have been emotionally abused, remember that you can heal! I turned into a prick after getting emotionally abused, but here I am now! You can and will get better! Believe me.
As a victim of being mentally abused by her own parents, it’s a tiring situation, sometimes I can’t stand by my own and I feel like existing it’s just… Difficult. I know they can’t understand because they don’t believe mental issues are a real problem to take care, but I really try to keep going afterwards.
I check pretty much all these boxes, but looking back I don’t see things in my childhood as abusive. I’ve struggled with depression for 15+ years and 3 years into therapy have made pretty much zero progress. My therapist even gave me a potential diagnosis of cptsd. He said it’s likely due to affection being gated behind qualifiers (doing well in school, participating in church, etc…). So while I didn’t have parents that exploded and yelled at me, it was a lot of “you’re smarter than this, how can you do so poorly” when I got an A-. I don’t know where I’m going with this, but it is interesting to see another source validate my therapist since I’ve kind of been doing the “maybe I’m overreacting and misrepresenting stuff” thoughts.
This is so relatable! Especially after my last attempt at a relationship, all of the signs got amplified and became even more apparent, even though they were already present throughout my entire life. I believe going through a toxic relationship pointed out to me what I needed to work on, and without it it might have taken much longer for me to work on healing, if ever at all.
Came out at exactly the right time. This is my life in conclusion. My parents while very good parents overall. Just don’t get that being unpleasant and always insulting your child can do real damage. It got to the point where while I love them and appreciate all the things they do for me. I don’t want to be in the same room as them. They just aren’t pleasant for me to be around. It’s unfortunate that the parents who provide everything and give me every opportunity, I have always done my utmost to avoid in every step of my life. And I do resent them for it. I hope some of you relate. Surely I’m not alone? Edit: Things might improve probably not. after talking with them quite extensively I think they are beginning to understand that while arguments and insults/general uncalled for unpleasantness may be common, it’s not good, just like smoking.
I was emotionally abused by two narcissists as a child. I live with my mom, now, and I could relate to all of these points to a tee. My mom and her side of the family do see that my father emotionally and verbally abused me, but they ignore the fact that I’m still stuck in it. Something that happened to me once my father and I became estranged, and this happened non-stop when I was 13, was dissociation. I didn’t think that where I was was real, and that I was really just in a dream stuck with my father. I would also think, “That never happened to me. That happened to someone else,” as well. I still struggle with dissociation and emotional numbness to this day, as well as what’s mentioned in this article… I appreciate how you amazing people make these articles, shedding light on these subjects and their harmful effects on people. Keep up the amazing work!
I relate to this so much. I remember crying so much as a kid and I didn’t realize it was because of all the experiences I’ve had with other people. I have a speech impediment. People where not so kind to me as a child. Shit, even my family treated me differently from my siblings and peers. As an adult, I don’t cry anymore, even when experiencing extreme emotion, not a single tear. It saddens me even more that I can’t have that experience anymore. All of the things that I’ve been through, I now have to sort out as an adult. I realized this after some serious self reflection. It’s a long journey y’all, but I believe we all can do it. You’re gonna have to sort out some very repressed memories to truly clear out the closet. It’s ok, we’re all going through this together ❤
as a literal former child-slave who wasn’t aloud to do anything other kids did, and who was responsible for the comfort of narcissist parents who always reminded me that I was less than what they expected, I relate to this heavily. My mom died last year and although I miss her, I’m beginning to heal in a way I never could while she was alive.
My parents did the best they could, with what they had — they had their own emotional baggage. But getting yelled at all the time took its toll. They realized it years later and apologized, and I’m not angry with them, but I still struggle. 1, 2, 3, and 6 are still major issues for me. Especially “conceal don’t feel”. I’ve been numb for long enough that I don’t remember not being numb.
I’m literally crying so deeply inside my heart. I can no longer truly cry even though I really want to: my mother and my sons father both emotionally abused me. I can’t believe that this is was my life. I’m doing my best to seperate myself from both but with a child / grandchild in common there is only but so much room. I am setting boundaries and it’s been working very well for me. It anyone is in the middle, please know you are sup and important fr fr
This was a hard article to watch. I’ve been there, I was emotionally abused and neglected as a child. I spent most of my 20s depressed and avoiding social interactions. A few years back I started psychotherapy, and my psychologist has helped a lot. I’m mostly on the other side, being secure, knowing my worth, and allowing others to come close to me. Many of my repressed talents and capacities are beginning to emerge. It’s tough, but it’s totally worth it.
“It’s important to reach out for help.” Last time I tried to reach out for help from my parents, they sat me down and forced me to talk about my problems, then proceeded to undermine my problems and say I was being overdramatic. They refused to let me leave even when I told them I felt like I was going to pass out. I can’t tell if this is emotional abuse or not, but they make me feel like I’m worthless because they don’t even help me through my problems, it the point that I know for a fact they’ll be mad at me for it, so I bottle it up.
This article has made me feel more relieved and gave some courage to break away from a friend I used to love/care for. My friend, while having been one of the few that I’ve had a lot of fun being with, has been the biggest cause of my emotional breakdowns and trauma. Throughout the beginning of our friendship, he would always try to isolate me from my friends because if I had more friends, he would think I plan on leaving him or forgetting about him. Since I was so naive at the time, I fell for the tactics and became a very dependent person, always relying on his company to fill the void of loneliness after losing touch with my friend group. Now that I’ve gotten more mature and older, I found the courage to make the move and break it off from him. It hurts a little to do so, but I know that it is for the better and can benefit myself to be more happy and have more freedom. Thank you Psych2Go for making this article! It really helped me and it makes me feel less alone <:)
i’ve been feeling depressed and suicidal for a while now, i always thought it was just because i was overthinking everything, but i realized that my mom, who yells at me for every mistake and plays the victim to guilt trip me into feeling terrible, is the reason. i can’t make a mistake without hating myself, no matter what it is. whenever i confront her she yells and tells me im being a brat and that she “does everything for me” and yes i love her very much but, i wish she would listen. and she wonders why i don’t tell her anything anymore 🤷♀️
Ugh…this happened to me with a vicious school bully for six years straight…I have PTSD so bad it’s treatment resistant because of it. I was ELEVEN when it started…I tried to miss the bus everyday so I wouldn’t have to deal with it anymore, I’d explode when I got home each day, HUGE meltdowns that no one could calm me down from (I’m autistic btw) and it scared everyone…I know now that it was my desperate cry for help that was never answered…six years of threats, mean looks, mean comments, etc DESTROYED me from the inside, and I found myself just going through the motions of the day, I felt like I wasn’t really living, I still have vivid nightmares about it every night and I can’t even go to the town that that school is in without the anxiety skyrocketing…I have legit phobias caused by it and frequent panic attacks whenever I get triggered by anything…flashbacks and all of the typical PTSD stuff just WILL NOT LEAVE ME ALONE!!! I’m so tired of it…I’ve been out of school for years now, but the effects are super long-lasting and it’s not slowing down anytime soon because it’s treatment resistant which is infuriating…and the worst part is, no one knew what was happening back then, including me! As I grew up I started to understand but no one else agreed with me, no one else acknowledged it until I was actually diagnosed with PTSD…so in a way I was also emotionally neglected for a few years too…it hurts, it hurts so much…
My mother is emotionally abusive to me and maybe my brother. I don’t know, since she set us against each other slowly but surely, and I only noticed now that it’s too late. I still live with her, and it’s a pain, but I noticed the signs after… an event. I was hurt, and she made it about herself. I started questioning everything. Now, I know better, and I refuse to let her hurt me anymore. My life is my life, I’m not letting her ruin it before I ever truly lived.
I realized, one of my biggest fears is people use myself against myself to hurt me or embarrass me. Which is why I don’t want to share my fears or phobias. Because when I did it was used to attack me or tease me in not a funny way but traumatized me… and I think that’s why my trust is so bad.. I easily trust and I don’t at the same time
4:01 what it says in the background about shifting realities…man. I ask myself every day, why does nothing feel real? Nothing has truly ever felt real. It has and hasn’t. It’s hard to explain. I understand it’s part of my diagnosis but it’s so intense sometimes. Once when driving home from work late at night, I forgot where I was (state, road, everything) where I was going, what I was doing, it was terrifying. I snapped out of it and remembered eventually after about 30 seconds but…yeaaahhh that was some intense dissociation. I was also in a very emotionally abusive situation. I left that town 3 years ago and have been healing ever since 😊
I feel this my awesome mom is very emotionally abusive and unfortunately. I’m not able to get out of the way. She’s right now because I live with her but I just want to share. Sometimes I just feel like I’m an auto pilot and like I’m constantly avoiding her. I stay in my room or stay at work just as gonna have to see her and I’m constantly apologizing like it’s my fault you and I know most of time it isn’t but she still makes it feel like it’s my fault and she’s constantly fat shaming me and projecting. It just makes me feel worthless.
Hi, I am 16 years old and I have had all of these things. My parents are the cause but they don’t know what they are doing wrong. The only thing I can’t relate to in this article is the CONSTANT feeling of not trusting others and all of that stuff. The only thing I really have had is extreme loneliness. Why I don’t have the constants of all the other stuff is because I have a very good knowledge. I am already aware that nothing is my fault and that blocking myself from the world is not healthy for me. I do still feel all of those things but I block those feelings and turn them around. I don’t listen to them. I am still working to teach myself that there is nothing wrong with me and that I am free to think what I want. I am currently working with a therapist to help solve this so I don’t have to deal with this emotional abuse.
HEY GOOD MORNING MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY I JUST WANTED TO STOP BY TO SEE HOW EVERYONE IS DOING THIS MORNING, I WOULD LIKE TO ASK EVERYONE TO PLEASE KEEP ME IN YOUR PRAYERS, I’M GOING THROUGH ALOT WITH MY TOXIC FAMILY MEMBERS, AND DON’T THINK I CAN MAKE IT THROUGH XMAS AND NEW YEAR’S. HAVE A BLESSED DAY TEE 🙏💯🙏💙💪
I had a problem recently, so every day i consume a little dose of antidepressants since 6 months, but yesterday I decided to not take the pill to see what happens to me, and that day I was feeling more sad than ever, nothing made me laugh, and I usually laugh a lot with my friends, apart from that I got sick, so sick that I’m right now feeling very weak and I have a lot of fever, why that happened to me?
No offense i really love your vids it helps a lot of people and it is informative but I think you might also want to make articles concerning on “How to cope up when we are emotionally abused ” because many people already know that they are emotionally abused and are just stuck on their mental condition. Peace and more lovee 💖
This article is wild, I apologize to random stuff ALL THE TIME. What’s worse is at some point I developed schizophrenia from how I was treated by my parents/6 stepmoms. There both dead and gone “heroin and oxycottins”. I can still hear thier voices Hollaring at me. -_-”” Honestly I’m just happy I can’t feel the daily beatings. I should be passed this I feel like, only because I’m a 36 year old grown man. Lastly your right…I don’t leave my house…I just play Xbox series X…all day. Lol I remember them saying “you won’t ever make money or be anything playing articlegames… Now I’m a twitch streamer…shows how much they knew.
YOU ARE IMPORTANT YOU ARE LOVED YOU MATTER!!! please remember this always 💜🙏🏼💜 I pray you take time each day to recognize your worth, to tell yourself at least one thing you love about yourself each day, and to be that light for yourself within all this darkness Sending you so much love, prayers and blessings along your journeys in life🙏🏼🙏🏼💜🙏🏼🙏🏼 Stay blessed and stay safe🙏🏼
As far as I’m aware of, I’ve never been abused in any way growing up, but ever since I had to take on a more adult role in 2018, I’ve had these exact thoughts playing out in my mind. I’ve become the sole caretaker for my grandma and I think that might be the source. I’m not blaming her, but I believe I may have started emotionally abusing myself and I don’t know why. I obviously need help for this, but idk where or how to start.
My mom usually does that. She usually says that if I want to compete to a maths competition I have to study more but my mom doesn’t seem to understand that I am not perfect, or when I play the piano she says that if I want to go I have to do better, or she says that I have to ”fight” when someone is talking to me terribly and it is all my fault that I didn’t talk back😢. It is ok though😢❤
This is me lol. Very informative article, thank you for making it. A good book I’ve read recently about the cptsd life is “what my bones know” by Stephanie Foo. That book along with this article has helped me in understanding myself and will hopefully help more and more people in understanding their situations and their own behaviors.
I’m happy to find out I’m not the only one that apologizes to Any Inanimate Objects. I also thank them. I always have to let everyone and everything know that I appreciate every small thing that it does for me. I apologize to my car for hitting bumps. I thank it forgetting us home safely. I Accidentally trip over a tree root, I apologize to the tree. I have trouble getting rid of clutter, broken toys, old stuffed animals. Books. because I’m afraid I’m gonna hurt its feelings if I get rid of it. it’s not even alive. I used to try to buy broken items because I thought no one else would buy them.
I just realized I was emotional abused by my “friends”, Because I can remember multiple times they have told its my fault and due to this I say sorry way to much. It sucks because I didn’t even know it was abuse and thought they were going through a rough time, so I continue to stay friends with them even though they destroyed my mental health. (Also if your wondering, I did move away form them and I’m glad that I’m far away form them now)
So here’s my story….I don’t know if it can be called emotional abuse…but this incident made a strong wound in me… It all started when I got a friend from a community that my mom and my maternal grandmother( who lives with us) hated…I initially didn’t know that they had such a strong hatred for her…I was the most studious one of my class and I never had true friends….I was happy to find a true friend in her…. And then during my second year of high-school she joined the tuition in which I studied….the tuition is in the ground floor of my home and my mom and grandma hated her coming to tuition everyday…they thought I had deliberately made her join in the tuition and me and her are upto doing some bad things..they thought she is spoiling me and making me drift away from studies while she was clearly not doing anything like that… My mom and grandma started arguing every day regarding this with me..they stopped talking with me directly….they called me disobedient, spoilt, arrogant..they didn’t talk with me for weeks…and my tuition teacher also had face the consequences of teaching my friend… They started assuming things that I didn’t do, they spoke all sorts of things that a teen would never want to hear from her parents….moreover I have PCOD which makes my periods too long( like for weeks ) It’s only my dad who stood with me in all this and solved the problem.. Now we have passed from school… She has taken engineering and I am preparing for my med-school entrance.
I don’t know what to make from this article, first came to conclusion of having Autism due to some of the common behaviours But can relate to all the points spoken in this article with existential crisis included Are there article or therapy methods I can try from having no connections or college friends to failing interviews because I couldn’t think, speak or remembering properly due to situational pressure Seriously tired of all this, hoping to see more content on CPTSD from Psych2Go
Hey erm I don’t know how many people need to hear this but… The journey to healing is never easy. I know I struggle so hard with all of these and more. Not just from family but others around me. I thought I couldn’t heal until I finally did somehow. Everyone who hurts has a good core. If you feel guilty, even if the thoughts say you’re guilty, you’re not. We’re our own self critics and acknowledging that is important. What I’m trying to get to, though, is that this hurt won’t last. You CAN recover, but only if you let yourself heal. Not easy, but… I know that we all can heal. So… I don’t know if this will reach many people, be they old or new commenters, but… Keep fighting. You’re not alone and you’re stronger than you think. Have a great day okay?
Let’s not forget that the silent treatment is a form of emotional abuse. I was very suddenly cut off by my childhood friend for 20+ years and despite my giving them space and trying everything I could to apologize for whatever it was that I did wrong- they would refuse to communicate with me in any shape or form…That was almost 10 years ago, and I still hate myself every.single.day. for it. It can be just as traumatic, esp. to those who will never know what they have done wrong.
All of these apply to me. The issue is, getting help for this kind of abuse is almost impossible, especially for a kid who is being told their overreacting. I lived in constant and LEGITIMATE FEAR of my parents bug when I tried to tell people they would always look at how my parents acted around others and told me I was overreacting. This type of abuse is not only hard to spot, but also hard to find support for, especially for young kids. As a child I KNEW something was wrong, but when I tried to tell people they told me I was making it up or that it was “normal”. Nothing about my situation was or should have been “normal” and now I have to live the rest of my life with the consequences of THEIR actions. I just wished someone HAD listened when I asked for help.
I stay alone, to myself because I don’t like confrontations. I’ve been through way too much I lost my Prince Charming to pneumonia and was forced to marry a conman. He hurt me so badly. He destroyed me, ripped me apart, leaving me broken and bleeding. I’m a lonely wolf in a deep and very dark void. Sometimes I cry until bloody tears flow from my eyes. I’ll never loved nor trust any man again.😪😢💔💯
omg my own mother emotionally abused me… I always had a low self esteem and even now (Im 21) struggle to put myself out there and make friends because I’m so terrified that others will think so low of me and it all goes back to how my own mom would put me down for my flaws and imperfections. I grew up walking on egg shells because she was just a ticking time bomb whenever she came home from work. We would argue every weekend and I would always receive some sort of punishment whether it be her taking my things away or putting her hands on me. She told me so many horrible things and called me many names and bad mouthed everything I did in high school. I never realized how that truly affected me and I was suffering the consequences without even knowing…
i feel i was emotionally abused by my ex partner. we decided to become friends but even then they constantly dismissed my feelings and concerns. im now terrified to say how i feel because i dont want to get yelled at or invalidated. my ex did do name calling and saying how im the reason things we’re getting awkward between us and how im changing. (sorry for the rant)
Just earlier today I bumped into the chair at our kitchen table set and I said I was sorry and my three year old son laughed and said mommy it’s just a chair. Why did you say you are sorry!? I’ve bern emotionally abused for years and it’s so sad that all of these apply to me. I’m in therapy and I have a “”sorry jar” I’m supposed to utilize
I’m 55 years old and was definitely emotionally abused by my stepdad back in the very late 60’s and through the 70’s. He was extremely violent and expected absolute perfection from my siblings, myself, and my mother. I watched this man beat my mother mercilessly for years and it STILL has a hugely profound effect on me even 45 to 50 years later. He caused all of the aftermath that is outlined in this article. I’ve spent a LOT of money on therapy and psychiatric treatment to try desperately to get past all the damage that he caused for me and my family. My mother kept him around WAY past his welcome and so I have deeply ingrained issues with my mother, too. I’m a person who HATES violence and I do all that I can to avoid any kind of conflict, which falls into the Conceal category, as well as the Isolation category. This has caused me no end of missed opportunities to have much more engaged relationships with different people around me and at least one woman whom I definitely know I could have had a relationship that brought me out of my shell. But it didn’t happen because I was too afraid to do my part to be outgoing and cause her to know how I felt about her. This falls into the Worthlessness category because I just didn’t feel worthy of her time, attention, affection, and beauty. I have always felt ugly, stupid, worthless, unable to do anything good or that contributed to the good of those around me, and have always felt like nothing I needed or felt mattered at all. So I look back at my life and see countless missed opportunities and moments that could have developed into something that redeemed me.
People think that they hate you, but the person doing the emotional abuse, actually hates themself!!! I just realized, after perusal this article, that the abuser/hater is jealous of us for some reason lol That makes me feel great, because I know I didn’t do anything wrong. That means I’m doing something right, and the abuser doesn’t like it. It’s time to turn this into something positive, instead of letting their unworthiness be projected on to us, to try and make us feel as bad as they feel inside. Nobody deserves to be abused, and it’s time to take back our power!!! YOU deserve better, and if someone is emotionally abusive to you, please reach out to get some help. Be kind to yourself 😇💗
This hit so many places for me. I relate to it so much from growing up with a narcissist mother. And then the Omori imagery at the end!!! While I do have CPTSD, I have regular PTSD from 2 specific events as well. I played Omori for the first time when I was really low from a date relevant to my PTSD was coming up. I felt so seen. So heard. I have so many article essays on it I use to try to explain things to my father.
I have some topics I would be thankful to have articles about. 1. I recently heard about alexithymia and I’m curious about it since I can relate to some parts of it. Also it would be intererting if and what the differences are to emotional numbness. 2. I have a teacher that shows some psychopathic/narcissitic characteristics. Since he’s a teacher I don’t have a personal bond to him. So how can you tell authority persons are psychopathic/narcissitic? 3. I recently tried to make new friends (not romantic) but I’m always unsure if it’s really worth putting much energy in this new friendship. One of the new “friends” I had betrayed me recently and it was releasing and exhausting at the same time. So how do you know if you should invest more time in a new friendship and how do you know when to let go? 4. Also I would be thankful to have more articles about aromaticism. Thank you for all the articles you make, you really helped me out ❤️
I’m a man who’s been in an abusive relationship. Emotional, financial, fysical and sexual. She almost murdered me when I tried to break up. My dad came in for no reason and saved my life. Because I’m a man, the police did nothing, and help is not available. For women, there’s all kinds of help, for men almost none. It’s more then 10 years ago and I still struggle. This article hits home

Ive never felt a connection to anyone in my family. Just going through the motions. My so called father was\\is the biggest emotional abuser. I walked away from all of them in 2021. Just 6months after my daughter, at 28yrs old passed away. None of them showed any compassion or empathy regarding her death, or my grief. 😢💔 Bunch of money hungry fools, standing by the abusers side. Good riddance to all of them!! Now, my healing has begun. 🙏💙

Recently I’ve come to realize that I lived with abusive parents, because of this website’s information and my psychologist. Once I left home and went to school, I felt nice because I was with my friends or just finding some peace with my headphones on. Some classes pissed me out, some people pissed me out, but at least I had someone to call out for help if I needed. However once school’s over, tired and just wishing to sleep, I get yelled at in all of ways possible. If I answer I may be beaten up for that or even if I don’t answer. I feel like a prison in there. But in the end, once I finally asked for help no one Listened.. I’ve come to finally discover and accept my fate.
For 13 years, I’ve been raised by an emotionally abusive father. When he gets mad, he loses his shit. He gets extremely mad and overexxadurative. He takes it all out on me and leaves me feeling like a sewer rat. I’ve been in the process of recovering, but i just can’t get my mind off of it. Can someone give me some tips to relieve stress?
I’ve been told many times by my parents that “I had it coming” or no sympathy. I stopped rrlly telling them my problems. I was sexually violated by a guy and they said because I was on drugs, I set myself up for it. They then will deny that they said it and say I’m making stuff up. Whether I lie or tell the truth, I get yelled at or being told it’s my own fault or if they do apologize, I can tell it’s fake asf.
I fear I’m past the point of help, as badly as all of these points hit, I am realising how many people in my life were or are.. contributing to this, but I’m not able to do much about it. I am stuck in a pit of dread and fear so intense that I cannot hold a proper conversation. I will share this with someone who can get out of it though, it is good to know there’s still hope for some.
It took me so long to figure out one of my parents was an abusive narcissist. I was in my late 40’s when it began to dawn on me. They would toy with my emotions all the time when I was a child which led to the walking on eggshells analogy & made me non reactive as a way of stopping any further emotional teasing. I was exhausted growing up in my family home and finally broke free once I turned 18 but the scars are still there in my mind.
It’s crazy how I experienced every major point from my recent ex and exhibited many of the coping behaviours, and it just never crossed my mind it all constituted abuse until a few weeks after we broke up. I think the worst part, and biggest reason I put up with it for as long as I did, was they were a former victim from their parents and self-aware. And even though they were always the instigator most fights ended in them apologizing tearfully and profusely, more than even necessary. But the behaviour never changed and they’d start another fight. Now I understand that in itself is called “the cycle of abuse.” I’m tired of being around people who just show me how not to treat others.
Along with all the tons of comments, I can totally relate to this. So even though you may feel all alone in the world and/or like nobody cares, everyone is here that is or has felt the same way. Just know youre not alone. We all just haven’t crossed paths yet but we’re everywhere feeling that way too.
It’s weird though, I can almost never see myself as my own person. Just the person my mom made me & the person my dad made me separately. I guess I’m doing alright still… What’s your greatest fear? I’m still wondering what mine is. I’ve got more thrills than chills when it comes to what most other people are afraid of.
How do you balance needing to interact with family or friends for social health with also feeling overwhelmed with how full your days feel/exhausted by interactions with others/dealing with trauma because your family were some of the causes of emotional abuse? I know I need to keep myself open to others in my life and not close myself off but I also feel like a year alone would be healthy. Recently escaped an emotionally abusive marriage.
This explains everything thats been going on in my life lately but I’m still not a hundred percent sure because I constantly overthink on any situation I always say sorry to even the tiniest of mastiakes because I don’t want to have blood blood with anyone I have the worst when it comes to talking or even trying to be friends with someone I avoid people so much because I get scared to be hurt by the person later so physc2go how would you describe my issue
mental/emotional abuse is a bit worse than physical abuse as there is no physical evidence of it. it can be very hard to heal after years of said abuse but people can get through it. (i may or may not be a teen suffering with autism and a childhood full of mental/emotional abuse, so i can say the process of healing is hard especially when your still in a home that you cant please your gaurdian and still get yelled at ‘n stuff..)
I’ve always been the one whos the first one to apologize even when it’s the other perosns fault I’ve always lived up to the ideal good boy persona my school upholded for years, i think i became this unreal person that i have lost all feeling of what’s normal and what are those things that I’m supposed to feel and do and not cause I’m not allowed to cause I’m a good person This was the abuse i felt in my school And now i feel ruined, I’m trying to find myself again and become the real me who makes mistakes and doesn’t always feel like shit even if you’re the most successful
For me the symptoms are accurate but the situations are not, I was never outright insulted or something to that affect, but I had zero privacy in any part of my life. I literally made my own alphabet (which I still use) so my mom wouldn’t be able to read it. It was never malicious, but I also couldn’t have any private thoughts, every word I wrote and thing I mentioned was examined. I was also taught that you should never settle for anything less than your absolute best, and while nice in theory it basically means that anything less than perfect isn’t good enough. A “B” isn’t “you did fine”, instead its “well it’s good you passed but you should try harder next time, you’re better than this”. It’s not exactly demanding perfection but the effect is the same, fearing anything flawed so much that it’s hard to even try. I don’t even mention assignments to my parents because even good grades are stressful, they’re shared with everyone, and if I don’t upkeep them then it’s immediately like hey why is this worse than last time, there’s no allowance for natural fluctuation. Very much feel like I’m on a pedestal, on display. And when something goes wrong or I just do less than my absolute best then I’m spoiled and wasting my potential and therefore am worthless- not outright said but felt. Bringing up any of this means I’m spoiled and clearly don’t appreciate my loving doting parents enough, or I’m too harsh and won’t let them have any flaws, and I don’t even know if that’s right or not at this point.
This is helpful. Everyone one of those is true for me. My issue is finding help. I have tried for years but have since given up. I was labeled as bi-polar simply because when i was a young adult, 2 antidepressants didn’t do well. Again, I only tried 2 different ones (also had just given birth. Those hormones really messed with me). I don’t have any symptoms of mania or changes in my personality. Ever since, then, it has been a nightmare. I go to the doctor for a sick visit. well your symptoms are because you are bi-polar. (aka it’s in my head) This and that, is always because I am bi-polar they say. I even stated that I am not, nor am I medicated for it. but because someone that saw me for 5 mins decided to give me a blanket diagnosis, I am not listened to. Even when i go to another practice (after waiting almost a year to get in) for a 2nd opinion. They said “because so and so said this, we will continue to go with it even tho you don’t seem to be bi-polar. ” It just makes me so insanely depressed, that I don’t even want to try anymore. I was gaslite and made to feel less than all my childhood, I don’t want to continue to hear it from doctors. It has been 3 years since I went to a doctor at all. My anxiety goes through the roof and I always cancel my appoint. The US has a long way to go still, when it comes to mental health.
This is correct but also it’s individual and not necessarily just these 6 signs. A major thing with c-ptsd is that there are more than one trigger so more than one type of trauma. Some of this can be blocked out and not something on the surface that the person with it is aware of. So repressed memories. C-ptsd dosnt mean you avoid any social interaction but it can make you a pretty spicy porcupine when triggers are met or even just something vaguely similar, like in the aftermath or during a abusive relationship including love bombing or sexual abuse; this person might feel scared of well meaning ordinary compliments in situations that aren’t threatening. Or the sounds of children playing can feel like beeing pulled into a vortex of memories. Yes some avoidance but it’s not all and not a sure fire sign for complex ptsd. You can reach out / open up and have c-ptsd as well as you can be pretty normal and not want to reach out / open up. The sadest/ most difficult thing about c-ptsd is the bigger probability for developing skitzofrenic disorder when untreated as well as the longer you have it. Also it’s not going away because the abuse or the traumatic situation ends, it gets somewhat better but nightmares and unreasonable sensitivity to triggers follow and beeing surrounded by constant triggers won’t work the same way as holding a spider with araknophobia.
I feel like I’ve been emotionally abused by my mum but I don’t show many of these symptoms so I’m I just overreacting or smthn. For those who want to know she gaslights me, does bad cop good cop with my dad but I don’t think he’s in on it, guilt trips me, has never said a single nice thing about my singing and always says my range is terrible, I’m trans so she’s always pushing to be more feminine and stuff like that even when I say I’m fine how I am and I’m also autistic and the first time I went non verbal she got really pissed, said I was faking it and ordered me to say goodnight and said if I didn’t then I’m rude.
this was honestly strange to watch for me. I remember over apologizing, being more critical of myself than I am of others, having trouble expressing my emotions directly(I’m fine doing it through indirect means, I have a google doc that I use to essentially journal any time I’m mad and why. Strangely enough I’m still fine letting people know that I edited the doc so they can check it themself, just not mentioning the problem directly), apologizing for stuff out of my control(I don’t blame myself for it, but I do it because people say “I’m sorry for your loss” even if they didn’t murder that person). It’s strange because none of these at least seem to be results of abuse, these all started in times where my only relationship was with my mom, she rarely blames me for stuff unless it’s undeniably me(like if I hit someone), is very supportive, and encourages me to express my emotions. My dad also has anger issues and sometimes I hear him yelling but I’ve grown numb to that, though I’m not numb to anything else that I can think of.
A kingdom of isolation and it looks like I’m the Queen. Don’t let them in, don’t let them see, be the good girl you always have to be. Conceal don’t feel don’t let them know, well now they know! Let it go is what I need to do, but all I can think of is things I don’t want to remember. Good memories have become soiled by the bad as I look at the majority of time spent at home was alone in my room avoiding everyone and everything.
My father was emotionally abusive to me for a period of time. Thankfully he eventually recognized it and stopped, but it may explain why I don’t often feel emotions as extreme anymore. Unfortunately that is done and it’s part of who I am now. I’m not afraid or stressed anymore but I feel less than I once did.
I grew up with an angry alcoholic mother, to this day she still somewhat denies what she did. I say somewhat because just the other day she burst into tears saying “I’m wondering if me drinking all those years fucked up my kids” I started to tear up too and said “Even if you did, we’d still love you” The truth is Ive been aware I was emotionally abused for about a year now. Growing up I thought my childhood was perfect, it wasnt as bad as others but it definitely wasn’t perfect. I grew up on a farm 5 miles from town so when my parents went to drink at the bar I couldnt walk to a friends house or anything so I mostly socialized with my brother and the internet. Not getting that much needed social development really crippled me in my adult life. I have had many losses of family members as well as pets in the past 2 years. My grandma who was the compassion and understanding I needed growing up passed away and now I just feel lost. I am slowly getting better with each passing day but my abuse with weed makes it hard to grasp reality at times but Im confident someday I will get over my depression, derealization and depersonalization. I hope anyone whos dealed with emotional abuse can find a safe place in life and in your mind. You are stronger than you think 🌻❤
This is very accurate to me, but I don’t know who in my life would have done this. There have been a lot of instances across various parts of my life where humiliation, belittlement, threatening, among others, have been used, but never by one person. Is it still considered abuse if it was consistent but never by the same person?
I have all these signs but my mind keeps telling me I’m not abused. I have this really low down job, and whenever someone says a mean thing to me, for the rest of my shift I deal with it by thinking very dark loathing thoughts about myself…on repeat. Or else I can go to the bathroom and self slap to get the pain out. Yesterday this coworker who’s old enough to be my father (I’m 18) made a gross unwanted sexual joke about me and that was about the last straw for me. I feel like I’m in a traumatizing environment but I can’t get out because I have to prove I’m tough.
I honestly haven’t cried for a long time whenever it came to my past, my personality and the defense behaviours I have set up as a child. But this article almost made me bawl. I have all the signs. I’m the youngest of three and currently there is still a lot of shit going on in my family regarding my parents. I have always felt that everything was my fault, and it had made the image of my parents simply not knowing that they emotionally abused me so big, that I honestly can’t tell if they did it on purpose or they have no idea what they have done to me. But even so, how can I even talk to them about it, when I’m still so scared of talking to them about it in any way? If someone has any tips for me to have a good open and honest conversation with an narsist mother and a father who is emotionally not a talker and took the blame for a lot of shit as well, please let me know. I’ve been going through so many therapies and I still am undergoing some. I’m getting at the end of my line here with trying to break the depression cycle. * Sorry if my grammar isn’t logical, English isn’t my first language.
this hit me too hard, i had a spat with my aunt over something so minor a few months ago—ever since i was 5, i am scared of her because she gets angry over everything (and would yell) especially if it’s got to do with me. it just dawned on me after that last fight that she was a narcissist, and i’m feeling better not having to be near her presence. also, i kind of chuckled when i saw that scene that looks the same as omori.
The fact that I relate with pretty much all of this… I was raised by two types of parents: One, a person with major anger problems who is too smart for their own good, and the other, an emotionally manipulative person who, through their own paranoia, instilled a large amount of anxiety in me. I love my parents, and I know that they love me. But all people are flawed, and just because you love your kids, that doesn’t mean your flaws aren’t damaging them. Be careful what you do or say, because kids remember and internalize way more than you’ll ever be able to give them credit for.
6/6 for me but not surprised. Literally spent the first 16 years of my adult life in an abusive marriage. articles like these have been super helpful for understanding myself/the abuser/the relationship as a whole. Its good to know that it’s not all in my head after decades of gaslighting. Now if I could just figure out why it’s so hard to talk about the good parts of the relationship and so easy to talk about the bad.
I really liked the poetic and regal chapter titles, it’s hard for me to want to admit that this could have happened to me though, even if the way you described the symptoms in the beginning only reinforced that feeling of home in my heart. The kingdom is cold, lonely, and empty, but it’s comfortable and I if I stay in it, no one has to get hurt, lol!
FIRST OF ALL, HOW FUCKING DARE YOU!!!/j Second the realization that this hits close to home is the fact it still continues til this day. Even worse is that even when you try to bring it up to those around you (especially in a religious space), their first instinct is that you’re being the unreasonable person in the situation instead of the abuser (if said abuser is your own family member) I really wish more people in religious spaces realizes how damaging families who ignore their mentally abused children, especially when they’re on the spectrum
“Your partner or even parent”?…WTH, I AM SO SICK of these psyche articles ONLY addressing it being a parent or spouse….what about when it’s your adult child? I’m the parent, and it’s my Kids who are narcs, and abusive! Today’s vast majority of psyche problems are people addicted to social media….GET. OFF. YOUR. DAMN. SMART PHONES
Thanks a lot for making this article! I don’t know what to feel after relating to so many of these points. I’m terrified if I confronted my ‘abusers’, they would just brush it off or guiltrip me. I think this explains why I act unapproachable on the outside but truthfully I am vulnerable on the inside. Can you make a article on how to confront our ‘abusers’? It would help me a lot. Thanks again @Psych2Go! ❤
My narcissistic mother did this to me. It was horrible when I was a kid!! I,out of 4 of us kids, looked just like my dad,and he left her. Every time she looked at me,she saw him!! She and I clashed all the time!! “You’re just like your father!””Why can’t you do anything right!?””Why can’t you be more like your sister!?” Etc,etc, etc….I never felt good about myself and I have low self esteem. I often wondered if have something like PTSD. I can’t self diagnose, but when I watch articles on this subject,I ALWAYS see myself in the lowest position!! My mother really messed with my emotions!! Since I was born,I loved to be with my dad no matter what. At 5,I was learning what the different tools were. Wrenches, phillips head screwdrivers, all kinds of things!! Anyway,we’ve always been close. Yes,I’m a daddy’s girl, but I always have been!! My mother tried to say that I loved him and not her because he has money. I couldn’t believe my ears!! No mom!! Dad doesn’t put me down and make me feel like shit when I see him, but YOU do!!! She was like a vampire, suckling the life out of me every single time I visited her!! I had to STOP doing that to myself!!! I still called her every other week because she’s still my mother. I hoped one day we could work things out. But she wasn’t interested in that. She’d rather be able to make me feel horrible for not visiting her. I REALLY TRIED TO BE FRIENDS WITH HER!!!! But she passed a couple of months ago now,and it will never be resolved. I’m sorry this is so long.
The painfullest thing about this is being treated like a “victim card player” by none other than your therapist. Choose wise who’s going to help you! If your gut tells you just a single sign that you feel unwell: Sprint for the hills! Protect yourself from further harm! Don’t ignore red flags, believe your gut! And search for specific trauma therapy instead of talking therapy sessions. Search for someone who’s at least BELIEVING you. Someone who GETS IT. I wasn’t that lucky. Have been emotionally abused for a big part of my life (for me it is childhood and after that even at my workplace bc I never learned about protecting myself from narcissists). It’s said that therapy will help: I was forced to got blamed and broken once again by someone I trusted. I was accused of being wrong. Of being “not strong enough for the world” while that therapist meant “not strong enough for the abuse to go on and on”. That f…cking had hurt so much. It felt like betrayal. “Therapy is a safe space”? It isn’t if it’s not the right therapist! I went there to get help to heal from my emotional scars and here was someone blaming me for the results of being ABUSED as a CHILD. I ended up re traumatized. Gaslighted. And – like I’ve falsely learned – even blamed myself for that. Hated myself for it. In need to protect myself I ended therapy. Thankfully I made some good experiences with therapists in a mental health clinic before this therapist. That’s the only thing that’s keeping me upright right now. I’m going to search for a self help group rather than therapy again.
Only solution I think is being stronger mentally and physically, because the most observed and harsh thing of nature is “THE SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST”, harsh but true, I didn’t got stopped bullying until I was strong, still many stronger people than me try to bully me, only thing is I should become even more stronger
OOF! A lot of these are me, espec the first two, Isolation and Worthlessness! ESPEC the part about trying yo make myself invisible to my mom (my abuser) so she won’t target me! I have a little corner in my house that I stay in, but whenever she comes near me, even just to pass by, I am TERRIFIED she’s going to say smth! It really, really sucks! (Sucks even more that she’ll never know how much she’s hurt me all my life!) ;A;
My mom has cried so often for so little (she tells me and my sister that she’s gonna kill herself and then goes on a long drive) she cries about everything, I’m the only daughter helping her around the house but whenever i want some me time she cries because i’m not spending time with family. My grandma just says that she has to be patient with me because I’m mentally ill (ADHD, BPD, mayor depressive disorder and anxiety) i don’t like when she says that, i know i am but damn don’t say it as if I’m slow to understand or something. Today she cried during lunch because I wanted to be in my room playing games instead of eating with part of my extended family and taking care of my baby cousin. I eventually gave in and just took him with me to my room. When I came down and I complained she started crying again because “I never asked to be a single mother”… and I didn’t ask to be born, hell i tried to take my own life and SHE TOOK ME TO THE HOSPITAL, like if she’s so tired of dealing with me why didn’t she let me die???? I turn 18 in January but hell I don’t know how to get out of here. I’m so fucking lost…
Combine this with physical abuse😢. A small child cowering in the closet crying 😭 so hard she couldn’t get her breath. I remember her. I’m talking about myself like ” she” was another person. That’s how hard it is to connect for me, when I even distance myself from myself. Living with a Dad who had wartime PTSD was truly hell. I forgive him.
I think you are mistaking “chronic fatigue syndrome” with “chronic fatigue”. The latter being a symptom of many illnesses. The former being a silly name for a serious illness. A better name is Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E), and listed as neurological by the WHO. This disease is mostly caused by viral infections, which triggers “post-viral fatigue syndrome”, and if not better after six months, then it becomes ME. A defining feature is Post-exertional malaise, which is worsening of symptoms after exertion 24-48 hours later. Also, paralysing exhaustion that doesn’t improve after rest, light and sound sensitivity, sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes, etc. We’ve suffered decades of abuse and disdain from health professionals and the public, and have a huge lack of proper biomedical research due to a certain group of psychiatrists and psychologists trying to make it out to be psychosomatic in the 90s and 00s. Their “research” was poor, and indeed, fraudulent (check the PACE trial, and who funded it). Please don’t perpetuate the myth that ME is psychological. I can assure you that it is not. Trauma may cause chronic fatigue, but it is doubtful that it causes true ME.
