Methods For Mending A Torn Denim Jacket?

This video is a first in a series on how to mend denim, focusing on the basics of DIY skills, tools, and techniques. The author shares tips and techniques for fixing tears and extending the life of ripped denim jackets. To repair ripped denim, various methods can be used, such as sewing with thread, darning with a sewing machine, using fabric mending tape, or applying iron-on patches for a no-sew option.

Preparing jeans properly before repairing them is crucial. Use a thicker needle for heavier materials like denim or layered fabrics, and a thinner needle for delicate fabrics like cotton or nylon. Turn the garment inside-out and sew the patch in place.

Denim is forgiving, making mending jeans holes easier than any other repair work. However, having no hole is better than struggling to repair it. There are various ways to repair ripped denim, including sewing with thread, darning with a sewing machine, using fabric mending tape, or applying iron-on patches.

The best repair is to cut a patch the same size and shape as the entire back yoke piece +3/4″ all the way around. First, steam the collar at the ironing board to flatten the collar and allow you to see the edges of the hole. Cut ¼” wide and then sew the patch in place.

Restoring broken clothing and textiles can make them look more unique, creative, and often better than they were before.

  • Hi there, Could you poss advise me?… my denim jacket has a big rip/tear on the top panel at back, below collar, just like yours. Im not sure how I should repair it. The hole is large and the denim is very thin there, so I thought the panel might need re-inforced with a big new patch of denim below it or should I try to replace the entire panel? I wud really apprec your advice, thanks a million 🙂
