This article provides a simple and effective cleaning solution for removing denim dye from sofas and other fabrics. New blue jean fabric contains fresh blue dyes that require several washing cycles to completely bleed out. Draping new, freshly washed blue jeans over sofas to dry leaves upholstery susceptible to stains. To remove denim staining from furniture, use a cold damp cloth and gently blot the stained surface. Do not rub the stained surface, as rubbing will only fade it.
To prevent shrinkage of denim slipcovers, avoid washing them in hot water or drying them in the dryer. Remove the slipcovers carefully to avoid pulling or ripping the fabric. If a new pair of blue jeans gets into a wash cycle with a load of whites or lights, try these steps to remove any resulting staining:
Check your upholstery tag. Upholstery can be made of different materials or blends, and each requires specific care. Top recommendations are usually Bar Keepers Friend, melamine foam (Magic Erasers), Murphy’s Oil Soap (wood cleaner), and Acetic or Citric acid mist.
Toss cushions into the washing machine with an enzyme-based detergent pod like Tide or Gain. The Chem-Dry hot water extraction or steam cleaning process is very effective in cleaning denim upholstery.
Use a homemade baking soda solution for deep-set stains. Mix 1/4 cup of white vinegar, 3/4 cup of warm water, and 1/2 tablespoon of natural liquid soap in a spray bottle. Step 1: Vacuum Well. Step 2: Mix a Stain Remover. Step 3: Prepare Rinse. Step 4: Treat Stains. Step 5: Mix an Overall Upholstery Cleaner. Go with EITHER M Power or Fusion 8 as pre-spray, then apply (after dwell) HD to darker areas where jean transfer is suspected.

To remove old grass stains from jeans, create a paste of baking soda and white vinegar, brush it onto the stained area, rinse it with cold water, and repeat the process. Rinse the fabric and launder jeans as usual. If the stains are resistant, mix warm tap water, white vinegar, and liquid laundry detergent. Rub the solution onto the stained areas, let it sit for 10 minutes, and blot dry before washing. If hair dye stains are present, act within 24 hours to save the fabric. These methods can help remove old grass stains and prevent permanent staining.
What is the best stain remover for denim?
Spray ‘n Wash is a convenient solution for washing out most stains on clothing, including grease and coffee stains. The product used depends on the type of stain, but Spray ‘n Wash Trigger is often sufficient. To pre-treat denim, spray the stain with the spray and let it absorb for up to 5 minutes before washing the jeans. This will leave them looking as good as new, regardless of the type of denim used.
How should you clean denim?
To maintain the quality of denim jeans, follow these steps:
Choose a Delicate or Gentle cycle for washing denim jeans. Use cold water and mild detergent, especially for dark colors like blue or black. Wash jeans inside out and by themselves to protect the fibers on the outside from friction and detergent exposure. If washing with other clothes, try with similarly colored jeans or clothing.
Hang jeans up to air dry or use a no heat cycle. Direct heat exposure in the dryer can shrink, fade, or yellow denim, and damage stretch denim fabrics containing spandex or Lycra. If using a dryer, select a low or no heat cycle and use dryer balls to keep the jeans tumbling. The best way to dry jeans is by hanging them up to air dry.
How do you clean dirty fabric furniture?
To clean couch cushions, start by using rubber gloves to remove pet fur. Vacuum the entire couch, paying attention to crumbs and crannies. Use a solvent-based cleaner recommended for the fabric and run a spot test on a small area before using it all over the cushions. If a recommended cleaner isn’t available, mix mild dish detergent with warm water and gently scrub any stains with an upholstery brush.
If cleaning couch cushions that can’t be removed is more challenging, use steam to remove stubborn stains. Most clothing steamers are portable, allowing you to reach even the hardest-to-reach spaces. Molly Maid® can help with the cleaning process, especially if keeping your couch and cushions clean is a full-time job. Their local cleaning experts can help keep your furniture and the rest of your home spotless.
How to clean a fabric sofa naturally by hand?

After wiping the surface with a clean cloth, you should have a stain-free sofa. Baking soda and white vinegar are effective for tough stains as they create an acidic formula that gently cuts through grease and grime. This method is also great for natural carpet cleaning, as it can be applied to carpet stains for a fresh look.
Can you clean cloth furniture with vinegar?
To clean fabric upholstery, mix vinegar, warm water, dish soap, or Castile soap in a spray bottle. Mist the soiled area, scrub with a soft cloth, and dry with a towel. For leather upholstery, mix olive oil and vinegar, spray cleaner on the couch, and buff with a soft cloth. For synthetic upholstery, mix vinegar, warm water, and liquid dish soap. Use a towel to soak up excess water, and let the sofa air dry. If humid, set up a box fan for speed drying.
Professionals can use a shampoo or “hot water extraction” method, which involves injecting hot water and a cleaning solution into the furniture to release dirt. The dirty water is extracted, which is then dried a few hours later. This method can help prevent mildew growth on cushions and fabric.

To prolong the life of your jeans, follow these steps: empty pockets, zip up the fly, and turn them inside-out. Wash in a laundry bag to protect the fabric, pre-treat stains before washing, use a color-preserving detergent, and never use fabric softener. Hang the jeans dry in a drying cabinet or rack. Jeans are a unique garment that takes months of wear before becoming valuable. The advice to never wash raw denim is generally for jeans that haven’t been washed after the dying process.
Many manufacturers recommend washing jeans rarely, often just a few times per year. While the crotch area may attract bacteria, it doesn’t matter as much as you might think. A healthy person’s skin barrier is more equipped to resist bacterial infections from jeans, and a pair of jeans that hasn’t been washed for a year doesn’t contain much more bacteria than jeans that haven’t been washed in a week.
Is it OK to wash sofa covers in washing machine?
Cotton sofa covers can be washed in the washing machine, but they should be washed at the lowest possible temperature, usually 30°C. Polyester sofa covers should be washed on a cold setting, as hot water can damage their fibers. I almost bought a white slipcovered sofa. But Wayfair delivered a brown leather sofa instead. I sent that back and got a refund. The delivery guys kind of messed up the sofa trying to get up my gravel driveway. So I have a gold/yellow, bayou sunset. And I use Folex for all the Georgia mud my dogs get on it. I keep it covered if it’s raining. But the pillows that came with it do not stay clean. I’m not really worried about them. I can buy new pillows. We have a big carpet cleaner. And I can use the attachment to clean upholstery. But we need it for all the spots on our bedroom floor. We don’t have carpet anywhere but the bedrooms. I have a rug for my living room. But I haven’t put it down yet. I know it will be filthy in no time. But I bought it and it’s been hanging out in our master bathroom in the tub. We don’t use it, it’s just for storage.
