Princeton Child Development Institute (PCDI), founded in 1970, is a private, non-profit program that provides science-based services to children, youths, and adults with autism. The institute supports individuals 21+ in various settings, including center-based day programs, work places, community-based group homes, and supervised supervised sessions. PCDI serves 25 students in grades Prekindergarten-12 and has a student-teacher ratio of 6 to 1. The mission of PCDI is to provide effective, science-based intervention for children and adults with autism and, through research and dissemination, to extend treatment resources.
The school has 28 students in grades PK and K-12, with a student-teacher ratio of 6 to 1. Almost 50% of the children who enter PCDI’s intensive behavioral intervention program before 60 months of age later make it to grade PK-12. PCDI was the first community-based program in the state specifically designed to provide intervention for children with autism. Over the years, PCDI has been nationally and internationally known for its applied behavior analysis research in autism intervention.

The falls weren’t stopped in 1969 just so some scientists could see “what was going on behind the falls”. They were stopped because major errosion had already occured on the American falls, and it was determined that the rock face under the falls needed to be reinforced to prevent further, possibly disasterous, errosion.
I’ve visited Niagara Falls many times. The time I remember very well was the summer a psychic predicted a portion would collapse, falling on a sight seeing boat, and killing many people. My parents and I were in Toronto, and decided to drive down to see if the prediction would come true. We were able to find a hotel with a room available. It had a balcony that faced the falls. As we drove into town, traffic was at a standstill. The vision was supposed to occur the following day. As nighttime fell, satellite trucks from all over North America were parking along the falls. Reporters were doing live feeds to their respective stations in Canada and the U.S. The next day was bright and sunny. The time arrived…………… and nothing happened. In an instant, the satellite trucks were gone, the crowds thinned out, and it was a beautiful evening. We had dinner in the tower with the restaurant that evening. The falls were wonderful lit in all the different colors. We were glad we went.
Actually the falls were caused by a pressure-relief uplift fault that popped up in a huge ring around the entire Great Lakes region. The release of pressure was caused by the gradual melting and removal of the terrific weight of the 1-2 miles thick continental ice sheet. The runoff from the GLs varied considerably because of the formation and natural erosion, as certain temporary river features came and went over the years, as the ice age warmed.
I actually got to see the original ‘Fire Fall’ at Yosemite Park when I was a little boy. At around 9:00 pm they would build a bonfire at the top of Glacier Point and slowly push the burning embers off the high cliff forming an amazing huge glittering fire fall down the face of the cliff. They don’t do that any more for obvious reasons but that was awsome!
I remember going to the falls, when I was a child, when they’d blocked off the flow from the American side. It was interesting to see what the bottom of the river looked like (looked like a solid sheet of rock, limestone or whatever stone it there). I thought it was in the 70’s….but wow time does fly by quickly!!
I am so glad the genius scientist along with the local people turned off the falls. They had to remove skeletons and coins which threatened to jam the falls and scare away tourists. After the falls were returned to their former flowing glory a law was passed forbidding the throwing of skeletons or coins into the river. The falls were saved!

I don’t think they removed the stones at the base of the falls. I believe that they had to leave them there, because they determined that they were holding the rock face of the falls up and if they were removed then that side of the falls (the US side) would collapse. As far as I know the Canada side has the stable plunge pool on it and that is the side that people go over the falls in barrels.
I recently learned that three people (Burrell Hecock, Eldridge Stanton, and Clara Stanton) went over the falls in February of 1912, when the Niagara Falls ice bridge broke up. There’s actually a plaque about it near Niagara Falls, so I don’t think it would’ve been surprising to find skeletons at the bottom of the falls.
This isn’t accurate. The reason they wanted to remove the rocks was to make that section of the falls was to make them more visually appealing. Once they stopped the flow and investigated they realized the rubble was shoring the cliff up. If they removed the rocks the cliff face would collapse. Reducing the flow at night and in the off season is to divert more water through the turbines. Also has the added benefit of slowing down erosion.
The layer of rock at the top of the falls is much denser than those beneath. The water going over the falls is carving the less stable rock strata underneath this ledge, thereby loosening this weaker layer and creating the strewn boulders at the base of the falls. This natural ‘carving’ action has been going on since the creation of the Great Lakes and the Niagara gorge when the ice sheet retreated during the last ice age. This action has caused the falls to move upstream until they will eventually cease to exist when they reach Lake Erie.
Only visited the falls once. –When I was about 20ish. It was strange /weird though…. When I was a teenager, I suffered 2 severe head injuries and I am now very sound sensitive. (Independence Day fireworks make me shake and cry!) As we got nearer to the roar of the falls, it made my chest and my head begin to tremble. Sorry Yanks. The greatest part of the falls is in Canada. The largest of the three is Horseshoe Falls, also known as Canadian Falls, which straddles the international border between Canada and the United States. The smaller American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls lie entirely within the United States. Get your facts straight. But then, that would be a first.
One of my favorite parks is a state park not a national park. The name of the park is Johnson `s shut-in is a state park in Missouri. This river is so beautiful it’s called the black river but it’s actually a very pristine clear spring fed river that flows through the park. However the best and most fun part is that this section of the river forms 3 different pools of water each of which is at a different level and as you descend downstream the old volcanic rock formations create shouts of water between different formations of the rock and when the river level is just right you can sort of use them like water slides and some of these “WATER SLIDES” over the thousands of years have carved out small whirlpools that are like mini hot tubes on the way down to the second swimming area and then on your way down to the biggest of the 3 swimming areas the rock becomes wide enough and deep enough that you can ride a floating inner tube down through this section it’s like a lazy river at a pool but instead floating into a pool you float into the biggest, deepest and coldest of the 3 swimming areas the river has formed. This is the very best area to swim in out of the 3 different levels you can swim in. I always swim back and forth across this swimming area. When you get to the middle of this swimming area the spring is coming up from the bottom of the river and it will take your breath away because its do cold just right there in the middle. Well if anyone decides to visit this park it’s well worth the journey.
Unfortunately the hydro electric generation plant image shown was the Sir Adam Beck dam on the American side of the Niagara Gorge- about 2-3km downstream from the falls themselves. That is a separate dam for generation. On the Canadian side there is hydro electric generation plants right on the Horseshoe falls- which is what I’m sure was meant to be shown.
The falls generation plant was already there and they just modified the new one on top of theold one the question is who built the original. Because the narrative is that Europeans discovered America full of forest and wild Indians and that’s it. There’s 100s of such sites all over America that are far more ancient the America itself.

When the vast chunks of ice started to melt, the fall came into existence. When the glaciers melted, a considerable amount of water was sent into the Niagara River. It took a lot of time for the water to erode the cliffs, and the falls were formed. By the end of the 19the century, the world’s first hydroelectric generating station was built near the falls. Soon, it started producing electricity. Unfortunately, the electricity could only carry 300-feet, so everyone knew that improvements had to be made. Nicola Tesla was the man who made those changes. He found a way to send electricity to long distances bu using alternating current. Today, the fall’s power plants produce more than two million kilowatts of power. The scientists wanted to see if it was possible to see what was going on behind the falls. They thought that if they could stop them from flowing, they could find out the mysteries behind them. Tempering nature is a challenge, and many people wondered if what the scientists had planned was even possible. How is it possible to stop such a powerful force? This may sound strange, but the amount of water changes at night. This isn’t something that happens; naturally, it is due to a human factor. Local companies are allowed to take water from the falls, but only at night. During the ’50s, the locals signed a treaty to take more water at night when there weren’t too many tourists there, and they wouldn’t notice a difference.
So just how much “stone” was removed from the base of the American Falls? Better yet, how was it done and why are there no photos of the equipment which must have been mobilized for such a massive undertaking? (The debris pile was estimated to be approximately 280,000 cubic yards.) Maybe that is because nothing aside from some samples and souvenirs was removed from the base of the American Falls. In actuality, the International Joint Commission which oversees the falls decided that the removal of the rock pile could/would weaken the American falls to the point that the erosion would accelerate. The Corps did some remedial work to attempt a re-shoring of the soft under layers but to no avail. None of this is to say that Horseshoe Falls did not receive a cosmetic facelift in the late 50;s / early 60’s. During that work the actual website was altered and re-contoured to provide the illusion of more water going over the falls than really was. Regardless, all this work will be for naught as the falls, because of the geology of the Niagara Escarpment, will eventually become a series of cascades and then rapids of quick flowing water. Man cannot stop nature.
My parents & I visited there in 1988 in their Winter season. The whole area was solid with ice and snow. We travelled all the way from Australia to see this beautiful area. We stayed with some friends which they lived in Barrie,Ontario. We were just amazed with the scenery but it was cold but not wet.

I could of told you this information. 🤦🏻♀️ The falls are absolutely stunning, my grandparents, her brother and sister and their partners all moved from Scotland to USA before I was born, I went over for 3 mths to see them meeting my Grandma (my grandad had passed) at the Canadian side of the falls to stay their for a week coming and then again leaving and I used to go out really early before all the people had got up, take the elevator down to the bottom shelf and sit for a few hours in the mist coming off the force of the falls which made it seem like it was drizzling all the time. I love the US and Canada 🇨🇦 and hate what’s happening to 🇺🇸🦅America under the current administration, she’s been taken to her knees. The flow is approximately 272,700,000 gallons per hour, and the claim, that some one can see one gallon flowing over is ludicrous! Then what did they find, are you sitting down? You ready? I live in Niagara Falls NY the city itself is ghetto, condemned building’s everywhere, crackheads, crime but The Falls itself is beautiful I work a 2-minute bike ride away sometimes I go into the park and I fall asleep there it’s so beautiful waking up right next to Niagara Falls, I once climb the fence to get a close look and picture and I slipped on algae and almost fell in smh
This is too funny! What BS! I lived there in 1969 and this “hype” it total BS! I walked around on the American Falls while the water was diverted. The goal was to study the area and see if a determination could be made on how it will erode. There was no plan ever to truck away the rock at the base of the falls.
Scientists were wanting to solve a “mystery”? Not hardly. At least not in the sense that this article conveys. The American side of The Falls being shut off in ‘69 for the simple motivation of aesthetics -trying to make The American Falls as visually pleasing as The Horseshoe Falls were; and the accumulation of all the rocks at their base made The American Falls unappealing. There wasn’t as much tourism on the American side, and the locals felt that this was because their side of The Falls weren’t as “majestic” looking as The Canadian side. The simple fact is, that The Canadian side had always offered more of a fun, carnival atmosphere to tourists particularly those with children than the much more subdued offerings to tourists of The American side; and this had a lot more to do with tourist’s dollars being spent on the Canadian side than the visual aesthetics of The American Falls itself did)… But, it was decided that the section of The Niagara River that went over The American Falls would be temporarily diverted to The Horseshoe, in order for a feasibility study to occur; geologists were sent in to study the pile of rocks, and to determine what the impact would be if these rocks at the base of The Falls were removed to give the American side a “cleaner” look. In the end, the geologists found that the huge accumulation of “visually unappealing” rocks and shale were actually serving an important purpose, in helping to shore-up and support the cliffs on The American side, and that removing the rubble could have negative consequences, including a rapid erosion of the cliff above them that the water went over.
Some of this information is false or misleading. The falls were created by a hard surface rock that spans over a large portion of the Great Lakes. There’s a softer layer of earth just meters below this hard layer of rock that allows the hardened layer to erode quicker and break off with the help of the falls. The falls began downstream at the mouth of Lake Ontario and began eroding upstream creeping closer to the Lake Erie outlet. It’s been doing this for tens of thousands of years . They’ve moved about 7 miles in the last 12,000 years.
I was there with my mom, my sister and her hubby and their son. I think it was about 1968 and I was 7yrs old . I remember seeing the falls, and we went on a guided tour, we wore raincoats, the tour took us through a tunnel under the falls and there was a platform we stood on to see the falls up close. We slept in the car, (dont know why, probably didn’t have $ for hotel.) In the morning my mom was trying to get out of the car. When she opened the door and the locks went click! and we all woke up. She was embarrassed because she tried to be so quiet.
Sewage flows over the falls every May or June. Happens whenever the waste treatment plant on the American side has an “accident”. The same recurring issue for over 20 years on the New York side. I live here so to me it’s nothing new. Hopefully whoever watches this article might want to reconsider a vacation here. And that’s besides high radiation levels due to uranium, plutonium, and radium left over from the Manhattan project buried under neighborhoods in Niagara Falls Ny. Also the love canal has never been been fully exhumed and removed yet. Just been covered up with clay and rubber. On the bright side. Rent is low for Niagara Falls Ny. This is inaccurate there were no rocks taken from the base of the American Falls the Army Corps of Engineers decided that if they were taken away the Falls would start eroding faster since the softer rock is below the harder Rock and it would cause the Cliff face to collapse and the American Falls would reduce itself to a series of Rapids quicker than Mother Nature intend The Falls were left as they were there were earthquakes sensor set and support beams buried throughout the Cliff face and the water was let to start flowing again this is a very good article but the ending is inaccurate I am from Niagara Falls and this is public knowledge available.
It does not matter to me which is the best of the US National Parks, State Parks, National Monuments or any other sites that belong to the USA, I just would like for all of them to be removed from the UN World Heritage Sites. These sites belong to the USA and it’s people and should be managed by them, not controlled by the UN in the future.

The disturbing part is imagine you see a waterfall and its 30 ft tall and u jump down because it looks beautiful but there is a huge barrage of rocks nobody will ever see cause if the power of the water… Now take that to nigara falls where people thought breaking record as simple as getting in a barrel and going off the waterfall… Now you can see how many people did not really fathom the seriousness of the situation because they could not see bast the mist or the thick waterlines

The falls stopped for few days, they saw how much massive rubble would be needed to be moved and decided to not do it.
The Lake District, in Cumbria, England, Brecon Beacons in South Wales, Ben Nevis, all parks in the UK, and all the famous sights in London and the UK, including Stonehenge, Wesbury Horse in Wiltshire also, The large bull sculptures in Spain and The Valley of The Fallen where Franco used to be buried. Mmmm mostly correct, except they never removed any rock from the bottom of the falls. It’s still there now. The falls is really something to see, my advise is go to the American side and do the cave of the winds trip, and do not skip the hurricane deck, it’ll change your fricking life. There is a lot of cool things to see on both sides and it will take you more than one day to see it all.
2/3 of the horseshoe falls are in canada. When people think of niagara falls that is the country that comes to mind. The state side used to be more significant, but was dried up for study . It’s so annoying when american creators and websites have to slant everything to America’s favor. It takes away from their credibility

The Smokey mountains. We love it because it has a touchable, warm, and natural atmosphere ! The foliage is gorgeous, and it is situated on the trail that reaches up the whole Eastern Side of the United States. It has so much interesting history from USA. also, so many seasons that have so much beauty!!!!
So then why didn’t they also stop the Horseshoe falls after for the same reason why they stopped the American Falls. Probably cause Horseshow Falls, on the Canadian side, is the gem of Niagara Falls and what all tourists come to see, so you can’t stop that. Hear that Americans, if you come from far away to visit the Niagara Falls, you gotta go to the Canadian side and watch the Horshoe Falls, which is the only view that counts there, sorry Americanos.
