I am a child of an addict, as I have gotten older, I have realized just how many children of addicts fall into the same lifestyle as their parents, especially in my community. Also, as a child, I felt alone most of the time as if I was the only one going through what I was going through. I want to start a non-profit to help children of addicts. I am forming a plan and filing a certificate of formation for a homeless community here in Corpus Christi, Texas. It will be operated like we have never done before. Great article, I am glad you have laid out these steps for people that see a need but have no idea what to do. For me this is my first time being the driving leader of starting a non profit. I run my own business, and have worked with and for several non profits before. Our project is actually quite large, and a bit countercultural for Americans, even though I am one, haha. Its basically a sustainable community that is built to also serve the larger community by meeting specific needs. It is going to be quite the endeavor, should be fun.

I’m a recovering drug addict. I’m trying to start a nonprofit faith based organization to help people get off drugs by offering sober living after rehabilitation or after they’ve served their jail sentences. I am goingt tmrw morning to get help with establishing my ein and irs paperwork. I need to write my mission statement. I’ve already scheduled meetings with the other nonprofit in our neighboring state that does the same thing. They won’t affect us but I can learn from them. I’m working with our county drug coalition as well. I’m trying to take this one step at a time. Idk what’s in store for me. But I know God has a plan and he doesn’t fail. Our community has no rehabilitation services or sober living at all. This is a much needed service .
Thank you for making his article. I’ve recently been thinking about starting a non-profit tackling an aspect of the issue of homeless in my area. The idea is that youth would be able to volunteer to distribute items of necessity to people on the streets. It would help homeless people on a day to day basis, giving them warmth, food, water, toiletries. Hopefully eventually it would be able to help homeless people get jobs and get back on their feet. There are non-profits in my area dealing with this, however I think I can take a different approach. But I don’t know. I’m not sure if I should pursue this or just volunteer at the other organizations. I want to help!
I was looking into becoming an independent contractor, or create an LLC, or a non profit. After perusal over articles on different topics nothing really stood out to me. Then a thought came to me to watch about creating a non profit and came across your article. Your article had the answers that I was looking for. I see a gap withing the industry that I work in. I’m a case manager that deals with the homeless, and people that are in courts and in halfway homes. I wanted to start my unlicensed board and care or a SLE home. But after contemplating I would just be in competition with those I love to work with. So I wanted to start my own business that would compliment them and my industry and community. I can’t wait to get started. It’s been heavily on my mind to do this. Now I feel like the people I’ve met and the materials and information is coming together.

I started giving out blessing bags for homeless people about a year ago. People are getting wind of it and asking to contribute. I didn’t know how to go about taking any contributions because I’ve always funded this myself. I just incorporated it a few days ago. So, it is officially a nonprofit. I’m not sure what my next step should be. I do not know anyone who is doing anything similar to me in my area. I’ll be perusal every article to learn what I can. I found out that there is only one attorney in the state who works full-time with indigent families in Education Law. RI has become infamous for the lack of quality in its education. I am thinking of starting a non-profit when I graduate to address the dire need for representation for families to advocate for their children to receive the educational services they so desperately need. I am starting a none profit for homeless. First of all I have been homeless for over two years now, and had beaten addiction 20 years ago. My goals are across the spectrum of showers clean clothes washer and dryers to maintain working on one mental status, in order to show them I offer what the streets doesn’t. My ideas are to show them from one homeless to another homeless that I offer an actual hand up, and not a handout. Cuz we all know handouts is like kicking a can down the street when we’re talking about homelessness. I talk to the homeless people on a daily basis, and explain to them the differences what have to offer, and what the dealers and streets will never offers. I believe by tackling what keeps people from getting them back on there feet in a respectful from one sober-minded to another that they will see where I can help them to see clearer sky’s. Healthy eating to help heal there brains to be able to think clearer on there decisions and choices.

I am working towards a non profit that helps autistic children, and their family/caretakers deal with daily stress. This IS A PERPETUAL problem! If I go into this, expecting to IRRADICATE daily stress, then I have SET MYSELF FOR FAILURE AND DISAPPOINTMENT! I will SUCCEED DAILY! and will attack TOMORROWS STRESS< TOMORROW! On a recent vacation I was luck enough to spend some time on a tiny island, where I was able to swim with sharks & stingrays. It was an amazing experience, but I recently learned that the island is up for sale & could be ruined by development/tourism. I live in the suburbs of Chicago. There are a lot of people like me who are minorities. As a senior in HS I have seen how education has failed us. I have seen how families struggle to put food on the table because food is expensive, rent is to high, enrollment fees for school are too high as well. There is LGBTQIA+ teens who are homeless or live in abusive house holds. I turn 18 in January of 2021 and trying to do as much research as possible so I can start a non-profit to help people like me. I have been throwing ideas at the white board for a few months. I have served with many different organizations, about a dozen or so. We are a military family, my husband is active duty and has served for 10 years. We became Gold Star parents last year. We’ve recognized a need for active duty gold star families. We also recognize a need for support for siblings and parents after their loved one passed away, making us Gold Star. Sure, there are many military organizations out there, but we feel there is a big gap missing. Also, many of the services they offer are for the Spouse and children. My son left that behind, a wife and son. They are getting support. We however are not. My daughter who is 25 years old is experiencing grief to the point of not being able to function at times. She deserves and needs mental support. The loss has been hard for us all. The support is lacking. Gold Star Mothers is amazing and has helped me in so many ways. But why not for dads? Especially active duty GS dads? What happens when the siblings are so grief stricken that they under perform and can’t climb out of bed? This is an issue I’m passionate about. A friend of mine has asked me to be on her podcast to bring awareness and I’m not sure what to say. I haven’t put any glue down. I’ve mostly been curious and asking other 501c3 organizational leaders if they think there’s a need. I am not looking at reinventing the wheel, let’s say. But it seems to be getting attention. Having worked with a non-profit for two years with the Masai in Kenya teaching them to change their diet and learn to garden, I’ve decided to start a non profit to help the Masai I’ve gotten to know. I’ve already done alot of the basic three steps but your article was very helpful and I will watch all your other articles you have. Since there is a severe drought in their area, gardening has stopped. All their animals have died. They are losing many people and there are tribal issues and customs that need changing also. I don’t know how much collaboration required for this but if I can breach a good network with some excellent same minded people I can at least think about it and start over at some small scale. I’m not aiming for financials at that much level but still happy to listen your advice on this.

your article is very informative. gave me a lot to think about. i’ve volunteered with many non-profits doing community outreach all over the place. although i love doing it, i just never feel like it’s really made that much of an impact to any individual. since my mom passed a year ago, i’ve been thinking of starting one myself. i’ve been really trying to figure out how i could use her house as part of the nonprofit to somehow do community good..a few ideas have come to mind but none of them would solve a problem permanently as you suggested.
I am starting a nonprofit for people with MS. I have been diagnosed with MS and have noticed that a lot of people that have MS don’t know very much about the disease and treatments or additional holistic ways they can support their treatment. This lack of information is greater in Spanish as well so I would like my Non profit to focus on helping people understand their disease and how to cope with living with an autoimmune disease in both English and Spanish.

I want to start a dog rescue ranch. At least 500 acres. I’ll need insulated barns for shelter in the cold and rain. I’ll need tiny homes on the property for the full time volunteers. I’ll need some ponds for water. I’ll need funds for the food. Funds for the on site vetinarians. There’s so much, I feel quite overwhelmed but I feel like God is going to make a way.

I have two passions, i lived through them and this is my way out, my life passion is to motivate and teach how to start an ecommerce sales business. My non profit audience is adult illiteracy and working disabled due to a work injury. I will help people develop their niche and how to grow in skill of how to spot value for resale, doing what they love. With step by step, slow guided instructions on social media article platforms teaching of how to start a store online. Create a learning center where class instructors and equipment would be available to assist and instruct how to start and operate online business sales. As i learn i want to teach growing to a national level, it will kick start the lives of so many. I would partner up with goodwill, adult education centers, DOR, adult illiteracy centers. I recently met a Ukrainian pregnant woman with her child of 2 years old who beg me in the street, she wanted enough to pay the hotel, I gave her more than she was asking. She took my cell number, telling me that she will repay me. Working at a non-profit organisation as receptionist I have a lot of leisure time at work. So, I started a rechearch to help this particular woman. Here in Montréal Québec, the socialism is strong. So, I called organisms after organisms.I found a lot of resources for victims of conjugal violence that wasn’t the case with Svitlana, I called 30, or so, organisms in total. To my great astonishment none of these organisms offered shelter for a woman accompanied by a child. I was confused, I pass my teenage hood in the street and as a young adult I lived like a hobo for a great period of time and I never lack of shelter provided by state and thus even in Canada with is less socialist than Québec. I didn’t merit that help, it was just available. How often I didn’t pay rent just to go at a rave party. In the case of Svitlana, this woman wasn’t in that bad situation by wrong choices on the contrary to escape Ukrain was pretty smart. It was an injustice that I have trouble to come around. Svitlana called me back, not to pay me back but to borrow more. Knowing for sure that I was her only hope in that strange land that is Québec. I gave her another substantial amount. After I started to alert the gouvernement that a homeless woman with children can’t find any shelter in all Montréal.

Thank You for an inspirational article! I have had a nonprofit charity veterinary clinic in Sweden for homeless people and their pets for nearly 15 years now. Now I want to go “on tour” and spread the help, that is so well needed to more than just one town. I am finally starting to gather other engaged people to help me with the dream – a charity clinic on wheels. Together I think we can do it. I have a tutor centre that will be 5 years in April my biggest problem has been the amount of parents that can’t afford to send there children to us or keep up with the monthly payments. I opened to help in different area’s such as teenage girls that have fallen pregnant and have dropped out of mainstream schools because of this. Also the over crowding in classrooms and the child that gets left behind because they can’t cope with Peer pressure and need that individual attention just to name a few of the issues. I have always just wanted to work with and help children and I am hoping I will be able to help those who have been kept at home because their parents just can’t afford to send them to schools or centre’s. So hopefully by registering as an NPO I can continue to do this

As you can tell by my website, I have a passion for Scuba Diving. My local harbor in Lake Superior was in terrible shape so I organized a cleanup and with the help of volunteers, removed 8 tons of tires and debris out of our harbor. I would like to continue the work, but we no longer have a way to fill our high pressure air cylinders. I want to begin an organization that will let me fundraise to obtain a compressor and other materials necessary to do the work. I would love to be able to continue doing this in other areas of the Great Lakes as no one else is doing this. After all, we need cean water. I have been proactively working to organize a non-profit group yet I’m struggling with identifying which particular need I am supposed to focus on. To give you a little background, I work on a small island and supposedly this group is run by youths to provide various services (cleaning neighborhoods, farming, group singing for churches, etc.) for local communities yet I’m struggling as the facilitator to operate because I’m realizing that the biggest problem we have with our group is the lack of commitment and participation and confidence from our youth members. This organization is a youth group that is supposed to assist our local communities (be the muscle) as productively as possible yet my other major need here is also to encourage these local youths to be more productive (as they fall into the traps of drinking, smoking and just doing all sorts of drugs) since a lot of them have been out of school. Is it realistic to have two major needs embedded in our work? I am a bit hesitant to focus our work on one need because I’m witnessing the struggle in my community on both ends of the spectrum. Please let me know if you have some good advice and suggestions on this. I’m really holding up to finalize our legal (official) documents because of this issue. My non profit goal is a little different, I want to start a non profit restaurant that sells healthy, affordable foods such as rice bowls, at cost, that way everyone can access healthy food without breaking the bank. I have thought up many different ways to go about this, and things I can add later to better feed people who can’t afford the at cost price either. What are your thoughts? I can’t really play with the idea of the service going out of business, I doubt anyone else under capitalism would start selling cheaper or healthier food as a result of this strategy, but it would feed people fairly.
I think one thing that’s not talked about much is that starting a non profit is like starting a business but with one major drawback. When it’s time for you to leave, you can’t sell it, so you basically get nothing. If fact, you can pour your life into a non profit only to be sacked by the board if you don’t share the same vision. Otherwise you can set up a company that does good things in the world, and you’ll have a saleable asset when it’s time to move on.
Understand the need I’m trying to address, research, homelessness, hunger, improving education, whose affected ? Children, neighborhoods, women . Study the problem I’m looking to solve, what are the things influencing the issue in my community, what other issues are connected to that problem, example a child trying to study in school find it hard because they’re hungry, what is your organization doing to address the issue, study other organizations, vision, what would it take in the world for the reason of the organization, solve the problem

Hi, thanks for this article. My name is Nathanael and I basically want to stand smiling with a bucket to collect money and or cold call people and or direct people to a website to donate money. I would then take that money and buy food and clothing that I would then distribute around my city to people on the streets and I’d like to grow this idea to distributing meals and having safe places for people to sleep. I want to help empower people on the street, I want to tell them how amazing and strong they are and that they can change their situation if they relay want to. If I could also make a humble living from doing this that would be amazing as I’m unemployed at the moment. I am now looking into working for a charity, I think I could make a massive difference. My take from this answers one of my earlier questions. You talked about the end goal and once achieved, disband. I think I will form a nonprofit called AquaFund whose mission is to raise funds for start up aquaculture entrepreneurs so that aquaculture business gets established and is visible. Once that is achieved with a certain tonage of production then disband AquaFund.
I am 100% sure there is a need, a desperate need for this type of non profit. My fear is that someone will steal my ideas, which isn’t a new idea by any means, but my idea of how to fund might be a bit new and I think ingenious in solving this problem. I have started a charitable Trust an year ago and we have taken three things to focus on Education, Mental Health and Menstrual Hygiene. We have done few webinars and awareness programs in schools and we are conducting free English courses for one year. Hello Mrs Smith, I am trying to put in place a small non profit youth soccer and basketball organization. I watched your article about the 3 things you must do first and it is very interesting. Is there something else you can help me with to implement such organization. I must let you know that it is just to help some of the kids in city who do not have access to competitive sports due to their economic background.
I have a question. Hope it’s an easy answer. Because this isn’t the venue for details. Actually two. First. How can you run the whole thing. When you are supposed to relinquish control of the organization to a committee of no less then 5 members. 2 is…. How do you start an organization that deals with something that has never been done. Their’s noone to research. Though the need is greatly needed. No seems to address this problem.
I have had 3 drug related deaths in my family in 1 year 1 O.D. The other 2 were health related from drug use. Burial & other issues due to death have been almost devastating to our family I want to start something for families who can’t afford proper or even minimal cremation for families like mine. I’m educating myself on this vision to see if this is possible which I believe it should be. 160,000 people died of drug overdoses in 2021 alone. Those families shouldn’t have to go through that shouldering that burden. 40,000 of those deaths were unidentified!
I am this young woman and mother who grew up in a really hard life with my grandmother in Uganda…I grew up and studied by the grace of God and help of other people. When I grew up I got to understand the root cause of why some kids end up not attending school and become mothers at the age of 16 and below…Most people focus on giving kids school fees forgetting the major factor which is accommodation and food..how can someone who sleeps on the floors in a leaking house and slept on in empty belly be able to go to school and focus?
We live in a very small village which gets little revenue. We barely get enough to pay the bills and there is no money to match what any given grant requires. So, I thought if we could start a non-profit and raise money to donate for grant matching, maybe we can start improving our infrastructure-which is failing and in the future add amenities to the community like a park etc. We just don’t know how to start.
I am an academic and Philosophy professor. I have seven degrees, including a PhD and two Master’s. I am middle aged. I have been looking for a job for three years. No one will hire me. Hi, my name is Freanne Kongri, 24 years of age and I’m from Papua New Guinea. I completed my major in psychology from our national University last year and am waiting for graduation. Unfortunately my father passed last September and life is so hard especially having 5 younger siblings who are below 18, the youngest being 10. My family and I are currently homeless and are taken care of by our church. Hi .We have just opened our NGO in Zanzibar trying to help the youths who have failed to continue with their studies in schools and therefore they are just staying in the streets and destroy their lives. We are teaching them computers studies and language at the earliest stage. But the issue is to get facilities. So you can suggest where to start.

Native Skater Association is my non profit that focuses on building skate communities on reservations as a positive direct action in the wave of generational abuse that has stemmed from the boarding schools. As the body count rises from the genocide of Native children the effects of the boarding schools need to be studied and researched. Where the government beat and oppressed Native children we can reverse that by providing happiness and joy for all Native children by giving them every chance to have a sense pf community that they can.
