Is Lifestyle Modeling A Genre?

Lifestyle modelling is a type of modeling that portrays a particular lifestyle, representing a brand’s product or services. It aims to generate an emotional connection between the product/service and the audience or potential customer. There are two main types of modeling: editorial and lifestyle. Editorial models are typically used for fashion shoots or advertisements, while lifestyle models are used for everyday activities such as cleaning products.

To determine which modeling genre suits you best, it’s crucial to reflect on your strengths, interests, and personal style. Runway models thrive on confidence, while lifestyle models do not promote clothes that retail well over the average budget. Lifestyle models are not high-end fashion models seen strutting along glamorous catwalks around the world.

There are various types of models in the fashion industry, from fashion modeling to commercial modeling, with jobs and career paths for all shapes, sizes, and niches. Body-part models are hired to portray regular people in everyday situations, such as scenes in banks or using cleaning products. Lifestyle modelling is the ideal avenue to explore if you want to start out as a model.

There are several commercial modeling jobs available, ranging from lifestyle catalogs to medical commercials. Many great commercial models are actors, so it’s essential to choose the right modeling genre for your next industry move.

Fashion models sell a lifestyle, while editorial models sell a story. Fashion/editorial modelling can be a great way to showcase a brand’s products or services to a wider audience.

In conclusion, lifestyle modelling is a broad spectrum of modeling genres that cater to different audiences and styles. By deciding on the right modeling genre, you can create a successful career in the fashion industry.

  • the older women gave me hope. this is my dream, and I will never stop working for it. im 20 years old, and I know I still have a long way to go, but I will never stop working and I know everything happens for a reason. every job I don’t get is a learning opportunity. I just signed with my first agency almost a month ago and I cannot wait for what the universe has planned for me.

  • I want to be a model but I am scared to because of how I look.but as I watch this article I realized I can make my dream come true. I should never put myself down . I don’t want to be become just to become one I wanna be one because I always put myself down and bullied.this made me realize I can be one.and not look like a Kardashian/Jenner I can be me.these women are inspiring.

  • I remember when I was scouted by a Canadian photographer on vacation with his family at 13 sitting in my dad’s gas station. All the criticism and no’s I heard after that really made me develop a tough skin. But I got to meet so many amazing people and travel to some really beautiful places. I loved hearing all their stories.

  • Wow this was sadder and more real than I thought because you realize that these are kids and some had very trouble lives or stories they were escaping from and then you have other girls that just show up with a silver spoon and everything is handed to them on a silver platter ‘ I guess they can’t help that either buy I can truly understand the envy some girls might have towards them .Thank you Vogue for the realness. 🖤

  • Unfortunately if the advice that the girls gave at the end of the article was put into practice, none of them would have gotten any jobs! The modeling business is cutthroat…and like Carol Alt said there are more than enough girls who will do whatever it takes to book gigs…so if you stand up for yourself, say no, or cop an attitude, no problem…the client will simply say, “NEXT???”

  • Why do we need to put down social media era models before praising models who got where they are the traditional / harder way? Just because your path was easier doesn’t mean it means nothing. There are plenty of rich kids who do nothing with their lives, or aren’t able to do certain things they want.. I just don’t get why we need to put anyone down at all =/

  • When I was 18 I was told that I should model. But I knew I was heading down a dangerous road of an eating disorder already. So I passed up a couple opportunities that could have turned into something. Who knows what could have happened if I took those opportunities, maybe I could have become successful. What I know for sure is I would have been miserable, sick and probably quite lonely. I chose to pass up those chances and instead married the love of my life and now I’m a mother to two beautiful children and I am deeply deeply happy. I know I made the right choice…

  • i am 15 years old girl. I have always wanted to be a part of this business. It’s fascinating . i think instagram will make it easier for people to recognize me, but i want to do this the hard way, i want to be able to share my story with the world having my head up . I would die for this business, i feel like i am desperate, i dont know where to start honestly . i hope if anyone can help me reach out for my dreams i would be thankful.

  • this makes me so sad and i have major FOMO now cus i always have modeling agency’s contact me about modeling and they automatically turn me away when they find out i’m 5’5 😔 if only i was five inches taller. but shoutout to vogue for putting REAL models and not those instagram models who don’t know how to walk

  • I’m 5’8″1/2, 122lbs-ish, ginger hair, blue eyes, not really curvy, still managed to get signed to two companies with a contract for a third one on the way. TIP: Management companies don’t take commission, agencies do!!!! Be careful because the commissions can be quite high and you will barely get anything.

  • I liked this article. I grew up in the 90’s and Cindy was my favorite model. And Claudia. I never did like the heroin chic phase. I thought it was so fugly. And I am too old to care about what is trending these days, but I enjoy perusal these types of articles cause I get caught up in the glamour. The fleeting illusion of glamour. People get all huffy about insta models, but it will end when the next knew thing comes in. That’s how it goes, faster than a NY minute.

  • I really want to be a model but I’m scared I don’t fit the requirements physically I’m skinny but not stick thin and I’m short. My thighs still rub together but most people say I’m too skinny. I’m pretty in my face I guess but I have a lot of beauty marks. I also don’t have a good laugh so i couldn’t do those laugh photo shoot. I really love doing the “model walk” and I feel like I would love being a model.

  • Modeling involves a LOT of luck. Some of these girls are pretty but not like crazy beautiful (no shade). I commend their effort and persistence to push themselves and be so raw and vulnerable. And it’s true, even in the acting world there is a lot of luck involved and who you know. People selling themselves and for what? A moment of fame? It’s truly sad to see friendships end over fame and materialistic pleasures.

  • This is heartbreaking 💔. Such beautiful humans inside and Out . Thank you 🙏 for showing modelling As it really is . Huge step for Vogue . Bravo 👏. Carlo Alt you are truly the kindest soul . ( GIA 🌹) new That 🙏So Please Remember That . Your All Helping young girls & Boys and there family’s . Your Giving Them ( A Voice ) 👈. And that is Truly the Most Powerful Tool we have . Use Your Voices, Stand Up And Be Heard✊🏼

  • ya, I was told by many, outside of the profession, that I, needed to gain weight. Then, I was chosen for a prominent residency in New York continuing participation within a wide-range of media outlets.. providing that I lose 10 lbs and 2 inches in my hips. My hip bones were already stripped. I relate. I would’ve had to shave down my bones. Hugs all around

  • Well I am getting nowhere with it and Vogue will never know me and I would never be able to actually succeed in this one life! Modelling is THEE hardest industry ever,i need a mentor, someone in PR and just help 😭💔 im getting too old and my life is running out.I once went to a casting and was almost trafficked in London…I need a fairy godmother 💔

  • It’s hard for people, particularly women, to believe that people who look as beautiful as these people are can be unhappy as models. Even perusal this, it’s hard for me to believe, which goes to show how brainwashed I am by our culture’s messages. But, objectively, these women are talking about a lot of suffering because modelling is a very exploitative – and these are the successful models!

  • that girl who gave me gangsta vibes I love her what’s her name .. I did the same thing I ripped off my braces lol and my brother is really into gang and violence and has been in and out of jail his whole life and I grew up that way as well. I have some tattoos on my arms which aren’t offensive but I feel scared to model because of my tattoos and acne…..

  • I have modelled for about ten years or something with one photographer that is really famous i’ve even been in a german edition of vogue because of her i have really curly hair and just a classic face so thats why she likes me sometimes it was pretty though like it would be really cold or the sunlight would make my eyes flutter but it was only once a year usually so it wasn’t that bad

  • I’ve just discovered these clips, oh Lord. Very interesting side, everybody thinks this is all glamour and money, but these girls worked very hard, and what they have been through, you can not have any idea and it can be very traumatic. Up and downhills but very touched by their stories. My 90’s favorites are here and some girls I have always admired, but you can see their inner development and still humble and kind. They survived that rough industry and succeeded. Beauty inside and outside. So proud of these women, you really want to meet them not because of their name, now because of their beautiful and unique stories.

  • Hi Eleanor, You mention that freelance models come in all sizes and shapes. However, I was wondering if age is a factor for doing free lance work in the modeling industry. What if you are much older like 40 or 50 years old? Do you think that might limit the model from finding some work? Please let me know your thoughts as they are always valued:)
