Please do NOT clean your bag the way I did, there is a high risk of destroying it. I do not recommend it. I did it so you won’t have to.
Finally!!! I found someone who does what I have been doing for years! I put mine in the wash, delicate cycle, Woolite, and I hang them to dry, and they are as good as new. I have done this with several of my Coach bags. I also wash my Juicy couture velour bags too, and they have come out just as nice. Just be sure if there is leather trim, to moisturize it with leather conditioner, so the leather won’t dry out. Simple, easy, and beautiful results! Thanks for your article. I don’t feel so alone now!
My new (to me) Poppy bag is in the washer as we speak! I’ve used the same method with many Coach & Vera Bradley bags. Never had a problem! Turn inside out or pull the lining out, depending on your bag lol There’s a lot of “books & crannies” & such. Plus, it won’t dry right otherwise. I ALWAYS wash inside of a pillow case “tied” shut with a hair tie. Protects the hardware. Only use a machine without an agitator. I hate agitators! I use Tide Pods. And always cold & delicate. Air dry only with lining hanging out or inside out 1st if your lining doesn’t “hang out”. I then buff the leather bits with coconut oil & a soft rag to bring the moisture back. Works like a charm every time!
Great article. Finally…somebody who gets it. As an eBay seller of vintage clothing and accessories. The washing machine is grail. Ive used the machine on handbags and sneakers. It works every time. I’d say though just be careful with your corners and metal finishings. Use a laundry bag or pillow case, mild detergent and a low heat spin cycle. I’ve even washed leather goods before but at your own risk.
Thank you daddy I’m going to pass this on to my ex wife I have bought her a bunch of coach and Dooney and Bourke I know that they have to be dirty so maybe she will try it and I checked out some of your comments and the ladies that have tried it said it works so thanks ladies hope you all have a good day thumbs up Debbie:-)
I’ve seen many a Coach bag ruined by washing in the washing machine. The leather turned much lighter and cracked and the seams on the rolled leather handle peeled off. I wouldn’t recommend it. I guess it depends on the bag. I just do it as I do my Ugg boots. Woolite ultra delicate and mix with cold water and dampen the entire cloth part of the purse and use a rag or soft sponge and dip in my Woolite mixture and even use a soft toothbrush for spots and then rinse it clean with a wet tag and only water a couple of times. Works like a charm. I’ve brought Ugg boots back, that some would toss.
Thank you SO much for this article, I was in the very same place with one of mine, def couldn’t even donate it! There was nothing to lose by trying! Mine came out PERFECTLY! That was about a year ago, I was just telling my mom about it so I had to pull up your article again to make sure I didn’t misinform her on the instructions and I just love how enthusiastic you are! I’m so glad I found this! Thanks again for sharing your results 🙂
I want to caution people about one thing – I made that mistake which is why I want to share here. This lady is right. You can wash your COACH purse in the washer, but not all of them. COACH purse are real good quality and will not be ruined that easily. I would say, use WOOLITE extra care and use delicate settings, not hand wash, but delicates is better. Handwash will cause your bag to retain lots of water while with delicate your bag will come up pretty dry. Also if your bag is WHITE, please be careful. I had a WHITE bag made of sateen with brown leather trim and brass tone hardware. I put my bag in the washer and it came out OK – I let it airdry and about 15 minutes later I noticed that the brown color of the leather and the yellow color of the brasstone hardware had “bled” into the white. This only happened on one side of my bag. The rest of it was fine. So my bag is completely ruined. I can’t sell it or donated it. I am going to the COACH store today to get some cleaners to see if I can somehow save my bag. Just wanted to share my experience here. I have washed other bags that were really dirty in washer and they have all come out OK, but those were not white, they were brown, khaki, purple and were made of signature fabric (just like this lady here) and they all came out fine and clean.
Leather gets wet in the rain and is perfectly fine. If it’s thrift, don’t be afraid of this way of cleaning it, you most likely didn’t invest a lot of money. I paid $25 for my coach soho snap head print sateen hobo, it now looks brand new. The leather is coated so it washes well. I probably won’t stick the whole thing in the washer again, now that it’s been fully cleaned, I use the coach cleaner for spot cleaning and that works for me.
I put mine in with baking soda laundry detergent that has oxy clean added. I ended put a little dawn dish soap and some more oxy clean and it’s only been 10 minutes and the whole sink is full of dirty water and the purse looks amazing already! Thank you! How did u dry the purse after the washing cycle btw?
