It is not illegal to be naked in front of children, but it is generally considered acceptable if done without consent or a strong relationship. A nude beach can be a great place for children to be naked without their parents present. There is no evidence that seeing you or your partner naked will cause sexual issues for your child as they grow older. As your toddler grows, they may ask if you can take them out, and if they say yes, ask them what they would like to do.
As a parent, it is your job to help them learn what’s appropriate and not make them feel ashamed. Some risks of sending and sharing nudes for children include losing control of the image, blackmail and bullying, and being involved in unhealthy relationships. Parents should also understand whether a child’s sexual behavior is expected for their age and if it could harm them or others.
Babies and toddlers often touch their own genitals when they are naked, which is part of normal behavior. Parent coach Dawn Huebner, PhD, says that “nudity between parents and children is fine as long as both are fully comfortable”. However, it is not proper because parental nudity around children can evoke discomfort or confusion, conflicting with cultural or family values.
Kids start to notice nakedness around the ages of 3-5. In general, parental nudity in front of kids typically ends by the time a child is in middle elementary school. Being naked in front of your child is a calculated decision, as it directly impacts how your child learns to love and interact with their body. Both choices are perfectly normal.
