How To Style A Casual Dress Shirt With Short Sleeves?

The basic rules of wearing a short sleeve shirt dress include choosing the proper shirt length, cut, and weather. A perfectly fitting shirt looks better on your biceps than a loose one. When choosing between a long sleeve dress shirt and a short sleeve dress shirt, consider the weather and temperature. A long sleeve dress shirt will be a perfect choice for formal outfits, while a short-sleeve shirt is more casual and less bound to traditional colors and patterns.

When choosing a dress shirt, consider the weather and temperature. A long sleeve dress shirt will be a perfect choice for formal outfits, while a short sleeve button-up shirt is a summer classic that deserves to be in every man’s closet. For vacation, wear short sleeve dress shirts to look carefree and stylish. Layer them under a favorite sleeveless dress for an effortless preppy look.

A good fit for a short sleeve button-up shirt means having the sleeves hit you right around the mid bicep area, just like a well-fitting t-shirt or polo. For more formal or business casual settings, pair your short sleeve shirts with dark-colored chinos or tailored business or dress pants.

For a chic look, opt for a printed or patterned short sleeve button-up and pair it with neutral-toned shorts or chinos. A flattering shirt should fit close to the torso without being too tight, with the sleeves ending somewhere near the middle of the bicep.

In summary, when choosing a short sleeve shirt dress, consider the weather, cut, and weather before selecting the right shirt for any occasion.

However, if the fit is right, these shirts are stylish and easy to wear. Thread stylist Alexander McCalla suggests that a button-up shirt should fit slim but not too tight. When trying on a new shirt, button it up and then sit down in a chair to ensure it feels comfortable and has enough give.

  • Khoi, my man, very cool looks! My favorite look is #4 with the two-tone shirt and pocket square, as well as look #5. Adding a pocket square to the pocket of a shirt is not something I’ve thought about, but I like the look and will incorporate it! I’ve also been thinking about rocking white jeans but have had some trouble finding my inseam as I’m 6’3″. However, with your links at the bottom of your article, I think I’ve found them! Some items I’m interested in, such as Glyph shoes and two-tone shirt, have unfortunately sold out, but thanks for the inspirations! I’ll keep a look out! Keep killin it, my brotha!

  • I’m 5’ 0″ with not so broad shoulders and a large mid section. I’ve legit never found a single piece of clothing that fits me properly. My thighs are also unusually large for my height as they are 23 inches but the bottom of my legs are normal so pants are very difficult. My torso is like 23 inches and my inseam is like 26. My hips are almost at 40 along with my waist. Can anyone offer any help?? PLEASE

  • Hey Richard, I think you are so spot on with guys being scared to wear short sleeve shirts because they automatically think of the goofy looking guy with the giant shirt. They are such a great tool to have in your wardrobe in the hotter months and it’s sad to see so many guys completely shy away. My favorite thing about short sleeve button ups has got to be how many more great prints you can get them in compared to long sleeved versions. You’ve gotta be able to give your outfit some interest without layering when it gets blazing hot outside. Awesome, awesome article!

  • I use short sleeves for salsa dancing and last night I noticed in the studio’s mirror I lost so much weight this year. What amused me is I came across as poor to my new friend as he was surprised I could afford a weekend salsa festival. I’m gonna go shopping with your tips in mind and pump these arms 😂

  • Okay so I got a short sleeved button down shirt that fits every single criteria except the width of the sleeve. The length is fine it goes halfway down my bicep but I feel as though it is just slightly too tight around my arms. Should I get it tailored or just live with it? The size up was way too long and big around my chest and waist.

  • I can wear sleeves both short (8″ for tuck-ins) and half (11’5 for over-shirts) on a 12″ shoulder to elbow measurement – love those two lengths. I doesn’t have to be either or IMO – it depends on what the shirt is and what it’s for. BTW, the shirt in the article is the first tailored shirt I’ve seen where this guy actually knows something about fit – glad to see it I have to say – at long last. Most guys seem to simply take out all the fabric (the hammer and six inch nail job) without leaving any give beneath the arms – the result is usually unprofessional. This guy certainly looks like he knows what he’s doing – now, my shirts tend to be much looser, but that’s only down to personal preference. For a tighter shirt, this article is as good as it gets IMO – shoulder seams are correct with the fabric sitting nicely across the shoulders, something rather rare – most guys seemingly recommend going too far inside the shoulder bones (over 1″ in some cases) which gives an ill fitted look. There’s also a good flow in the shirt above even with the form fitting look (that’s why you need enough give under the arms). The sleeves are nice and short, but not too much so – most guys advise having them cut to the armpits which is ridiculous – such guys need to watch this article! The only thing is that I’d go a little bigger and deeper with the collar. All that said, there’s nothing wrong with the box fit either once it’s done right (around 2″ allowed in folded fabric each side). I’m usually very critical, but I’ll give this article a thumbs up!
