This tutorial demonstrates how to transform any knit top pattern into a maternity shirt pattern. The process involves pinning the pattern to the seam below the chest, at the bottom, and in the middle of the shirt. The front bodice should be marked on the fabric where the ruching length was added. Sewing two rows of gathering stitches about an inch is necessary. The ruching instructions are simple yet effective.
To make the maternity shirt, measure a 10″ piece of elastic and tack it onto the inside seam of the shirt. Stretch the elastic to create a ruched t-shirt with a shorter sleeve for spring. The t-shirt can be made with a seam ripper or stitch picker, making it perfect for wearing with leggings. Turn the shirt inside out and cut along the side seams just past the ruching. This tutorial is a great resource for those looking to make a maternity shirt that fits and flatters a variety of tummies.
