Upcycling is a fun and eco-friendly way to create unique clothes and accessories. It doesn’t require a large budget and can be done with old jeans, making them perfect for warm quilts. Additionally, upholstering a chair with colorful denim can add a bright and fun touch. To start, start with basic mending and learn how to make your own tops, dresses, pants, and accessories.
To save money and get a unique look, start by looking through your wardrobe and consider purchasing a new denim shirt to personalize. Over 50 simple tutorials can be found on Pinterest, and by September 27th, you can upload your recycled shirts to Instagram with the hashtags therefashioners2015 to win over £600 of sewing goodies.
Another great upcycling project involves transforming two denim shirts into a stylish tank dress. Pinterest users have shared ideas on upcycling clothes, refashioning clothes, and recycling clothes. Hemming shirts can be done with a quick hand stitch or folding them to create a hem. If you have an old denim shirt, cut it up and grab some fabric to get creative with it. Add any color or patterns you like together. Remember that upcycling is a fun and cost-effective way to create unique and stylish items.

I love the plaid skirt too . That’s literally something I’d wear all the time ! You are great ! I love to take things an make them into other things too . One of the neatest things I ever made was a crochet purse for my daughter out of strips of heavy fleece fabric which was striped like a Mexican type pattern an bright pretty colors . . It made a great heavy duty purse an very pretty .
Your #1 favorite is my favorite, too! I was perusal and as you went through the dress shirts and was disappointed that shirt wasn’t included, and then there it is! Such a cool shirt and the first one I ever tried myself. I’m a novice upcycler, but hope to some day be able to do the kind of things you do. I’m just learning to use a more modern sewing machine than my mom’s old basic Singer. It finally died and I had to upgrade.
Wow! So great to find someone who is working with the basic shirt structure and not turning them into kids’ clothes! I love your style – LOVE the one with the French cuffs, but so many of these are good and I can wear them even at my age and style level! (Professional but with flair.) Thank you, you are fabulous!
Hi, new subscriber here. These article’s are so much fun, i think I’ll be binge perusal. I was looking for ways to expand a skirt that is just a bit too small (elastic waist and all) with crochet and you popped in my feed. I love these and maybe I will find something here to guide me as I check out your playlist. Thanks so much.
I love, love, LOVE how creative you were with all of your designs up-cycling men’s shirts!!! I had to Upcycle several men’s dress shirts for a high school production of Les Miserable several years ago. The shirts needed to have big puff sleeves for the era of men’s shirts during the French Revolution. It was super easy and what I did was cut the original sleeves off where it was sewn on at the top, at the shoulder and around under the armpit; I just simply cut it close to the seam. Then I cut off the cuffs and saved them. I used white broadcloth to cut out a new, larger/fuller style sleeve, sewed a seam down the sleeve, leaving a slit to serve as a placket above where the cuff would be attached, then gathered it a little at the shoulder and attached it to the shirt. Lastly, I made a pleat at the bottom of the sleeve finished the edge of the slit/placket, and attached the cuff by sewing directly over the original topstitched seam on the cuff. Saving me from having to make a whole new cuff, buttonhole and sewing on a button.🤗 I must have upcycled, at least, a dozen shirts, as it was a pretty large cast! The shirts had been donated to the theatre department from a tuxedo shop that had replaced their shirts or had gone out of business. It was fun to be creative and reuse all of those shirts that we had on hand.🥰
“Omg! That’s so clever!” I’m over here gasping and shouting at the article 😂 your stuff never gets old. NEVER. You inspire me regularly & not just for sewing. Your confidence and individuality make me feel confident to be more individual (like I used to be before life dragged me down lol) you are a gem and a treasure. Thank you ❤❤❤❤❤
Love all these! My body shape in old age and having big babies has me making more empire style. I love men’s shirts and tshirts. Better quality material. I use as linings for jean purses too. I just bought multiple tshirts on super clearance at Walmart. I buy 2 of each color. Use second to make elbow length sleeves and V insets at side seams so I have fit and flare. I sometimes buy oversized, split and sew back with elastic casing at waist or empire line. I will try some of your other ideas.
Subscribed! You and Orly Shani ( I hope it’s ok to give another great DIY-er a shout out) make me want to learn how to sew. I’ve been compiling a bag of clothes to donate and now I’m going back through it to see what I can upcycle from the pieces I really didn’t want to give away, but just don’t fit comfortably anymore. Thanks so much for all of the great ideas. I think I want to try #17 if I can someday
My grandmother took men’s dress suits and redesigned dress outfits for herself. She would make dress, skirts, shorts, tops, hats, purses. My mother God bless her soul, taught my sisters and myself how to sew. I’m not as good as my sisters and my mother but, I learned to take my time when making clothing.
If you are not making a lot of money doing this, you should.I did not think I would have gotten through a whole twenty-something minute article. My favourites so far are the off the shoulder top, peplum belt and plaid skirt. My gosh..Talk about creativity.I wish there was a article to give ideas on how to wear the peplum belt
Very creative, but why are you showing your work results so briefly, so quickly, barely for 2 seconds? It is almost impossible to even see it, that’s how fast it’s shown. Most of the time we see your face, talking, (yes it’s a beautiful face), but instead it would be great if we could watch your works longer while you are talking. ” Most wonderful sweater dress” yes in deed but you barely showed it for 1/10 of a second. As if you are teasing us?
Hmmm, not seeing the 33 links for these DIY, are you still going to include them in your description? It was good to see this article to give me reminders of what some of my favorites were like the blazer belt, flannel skirt, of course the statement sleeves of it all. But was wondering why you did not include the trench coat DIY because most of them are from the men thrift rack aren’t they? Thanks for sharing and blessing o you and all in the days to come.
AHHHH so good!!! I love you!!💕💕💕 everytime I loose motivation to make something I always come to you. You always seem to make me feel better about everything I make or could make. I already am a Fashion student and you are LITERALLY my inspiration ❤️. i took an orange and white horizontal stripe men’s polo, took the sleeves off and now it’s a cute tennis dress for summer in Australia ❤️❤️❤️
My style is tomboy, so I would not want to do those. I used to work at A&F in the 99-02. I have TONS of awesome quality material that I wanted to make a little more modern or make them fit better. Menswear is always higher quality than women’s. I got into sewing because I’m petite; altering all my clothes got too pricey, especially work clothes.
Thank you for bringing “mutton sleeve” to my vocabulary! OMG, I can’t wait to annoy my husband by raiding his wardrobe. lol I’m a beginner to making my own clothes, but I’m hard to dress off the rack, due to my ratios (bust to waist, torso to legs, etc), so I shoulda started doing this 20 years ago. Thank you so much for sharing all of these SUPER cool creations with us!! I’m excited to try a lot of them out!
Listen she is so good at what she does and yes all were my top thirty maybe except for one or too but girl your website is fire because you got the articles with the links and we all know the thrift stores always have multiples. And Men’s shirts are the bomb thank you so much because if your not a size two this gives us so much room to have custom pieces.
Oh My, I love the fringe on the white off the shoulder top, and cutting a men’s wear jacket to a short one? wow, great idea. I have to say it would take a big man to make a shirt/jacket or any clothing item to use for something for me. I took 2 plaid shirts that were exactly the same and made a mid calf length dress that I adored, unfortunately I have outgrown it 🙁 They matched perfectly on the front, but the back was on the diagonal and didn’t match, but everyone loved the dress., I may have to make a white one for the summer. You have incredible ideas, I hope you are working for a design firm and making the big bucks
My favorites were 15, 11 and 3. Idk how to sew, but for number 1, I think I’d add maybe some denim down the sides and add a denim ruffle around the bottom. Or maybe some tartan fabric?? With the tartan fabric, on the sides, you could have it flare out kind of like a skirt underneath would. Or cut panels that were the same size from a blazer, the part that has pockets, and use that to add pockets to it. It certainly got my creative juices flowing, though, that’s for sure.
Yu had me gigglin and wowing throughout. Girl!! I 4got how boss yu are and been. Whew, all sumptuous. So happy to have been a part of this and your vids make me feel I am. Yay. I finished my cargo tied dye and I was super super happy how they turn! They very very cute! This gives me inspiration to work on things and do something so different! You are a very very bless woman! With a very awesome talent!! Thank you!!!
