How To Maintain A Journal Of Creativity?

A creative journal can be a powerful tool for creativity, organization, and reflection, enhancing productivity and well-being. It can be kept in paper or digital form, and it is essential to gather inspiration, find the perfect journal, choose a writing instrument, decide where and when to write, stop worrying, and write until you’re done.

Art journaling is a powerful mode of expression that allows you to develop and fine-tune your personal style, experiment with new skills, ideas, and supplies, and reflect on your artistic abilities. To get started with creative journaling, select a journal, set aside time, gather inspiration, make a journal page layout, and make it easy to get started.

Practicing free writing is one of the best ways to start a creative journal. Set a time for 5 minutes to write down anything and everything that comes to your mind within those 5 minutes. Journaling helps silence the inner critic and declutter ideas in a safe space without judgement. It gives us permission to listen to our voice and create a habit of creating.

Journaling also helps overcome perfectionism and capture ideas wherever they come. It is important to keep in mind balance and spacing in a spread, especially for collage spreads. Don’t be afraid to doodle and draw, focus on stories, consider bullet journaling, try mind mapping, and add additional media. Unlock your creativity with journaling and discover how daily writing boosts inspiration, problem-solving, and self-awareness in your story.

  • I like the act of writing, it relaxes me to just write for hours while perusal Youtube articles half attentively, but I’m not creative enough to free write that much so I just copy Wikipedia articles that interest me. I haven’t seen anyone else do something like that but I love it! And it’s a great way to fill up notebooks fast (and I get to learn a bunch of new things!)

  • Basically, if you have a hobby, devote a notebook to it. For example, back in the day when article Games had Puzzles or Cheat Codes, you could devote a notebook to that game, or have a notebook for all of your games. Another thing you can do is track your finances. Open your notebook and have the left page for “income,” and track important purchases (things that require maintenance) and use the right page for out going expenses. You can watch how the price of things change over time, your spending, and even your income. Use a notebook to track your health. Like keep track of your weight, blood pressure, & temperature. You can present it to your doctor to give them more data on how to treat any illness you have. To touch on poetry, or other writing samples: use the left page for the writing sample, and use the right to provide context in your life. Basically remember why you wrote the poem, as these memories can fade overtime. Or, simply Journal. Just record your day with important events. Reflect on what went well, and what could be improved on. Just take an hour a day for this. If you are religious, and do daily scripture reading (or any other type of reader), read your selection of the book, and write down any inspirations, or thoughts you have. If you like to re-read books, divide the page up into sections, and use one section per read through. See how your interpretation of the text changes overtime. Or, one of the best uses: use it to purge all negative thoughts right them down, and never look at the notebook again.

  • All the ideas: 1. Make it a sketchbook 2. Fill it with poems or inspirational quotes 3. A dream log 4. Food diary 5. Habit tracker 6. Spending tracker 7. If it has perforated pages, use these to write letters to people 8. Media lists 9. Practice notebook (if you’re learning something like a new language or hobby) 10. Scrapbook 11. A catalog of all your inks, stamps, washi tapes, etc 12. Write down all your tasks

  • As you get older, these kind of activities are a guard against mental atrophy, and other age-related cognitive disorders. I intend to keep my mind as busy as possible in my “twilight” years (THAT sounds ominous!). I have always had a very active mind, and great memory… I think I have a great chance of keeping my wits until my “expiry date”.

  • In my younger years I’ve been travelling a lot and always had a travel diary with me. I wrote about the places I’ve visited or about the people I met, made sketches of people and landscapes and glued in photos, tickets for train or bus rides, tickets for concerts, exhibitions or museums … And like so many others I picked up some notebooks over time but didn’t really know how to make use of them. I just knew I needed to have them ^^. And also, there’s just something “magical” about unused empty books, I don’t know how to describe it. Right now I’m doing what you described as creative book. But I split it into separate books. One’s my “music journal” in which I write down lyrics, chord progressions (in the past I’ve done that on whatever sheet was lying around and I’m pretty disorganized so I lost some material … I’m also in the process of de-digitalizing because even though it’s nice to instantly record ideas I feel that I’m much more creative with a pen! It makes me actively work on ideas instead of just instantly recording every crap that crosses my mind and store it on the hard-drive just to judge it as half-baked and delete it a month later) and also keep track of my practice habits. The other one’s my “art” journal in which I do simple drawing exercises. I only use pencils so I don’t really need expensive paper for that. I’m thinking of starting another one for this year’s NaNoWriMo. I intend to to all my character sketches and outlining in one book but we’ll see. At work I still prefer a binder, it’s a little bit more convenient for me.

  • This is why I’m a subscriber to your website, you are my people. Particularly like the idea of using as scrapbook/memorabilia, have loads of cards/ letters I don’t want to let go even if scanned. Thank you! Have recently discovered washi tape just to add to the obsessions of all things stationery… keep posting these wonderful articles! X

  • The bloopers are perfect! They should have been in the script. Lol so fun! I’m a list maker, I keep a #To Do book #To Buy book and a #To Make book. I love crafting and I come up with ideas often. Writing them down or pasting pictures of projects help me when I get into a rut. I can flip through and chose a project. My To buy book literally is a running list of what I need to buy. If it’s on the left hand side of the page it’s an immediate need like milk bread dog food ect. On the right side I just write those wishful shop for items like dining room table or red shoes to match a dress. Once the book is finished I start a new book and transfer all the wishful items if I still wish for them on the fist page of the new book. I have 25 plus years of these list books. It’s fun to look at my lists from when my child was little or planning Christmas dinners. So fun! Colorful pens highlighters stickers and washi tapes add color and whimsy.

  • What I do to fill my notebooks is writing letters to my future self. Last year I realised that I had absolutely no memories of my elementary school days, so i kept track what I am doing now in school and in my life. I am not persistent enough to keep a diary, so I do this when I got time. And I write down advice to myself and dreams I have for the future to see if they do happen.

  • There’s a million ideas for a journal filled with gaming stuff: -Tips for old games, like maps or guides, or even new games, why stop at retro? -Games you own, have played, currently playing, want to play, want to own cuz you saw what E3 had to offer. -Ideal builds for your characters or parties in RPGs or the like. -Fandom stuff like ships, headcanons, and fanfics. -Games reviews, doesn’t even have to be lengthy. -Other gaming stats to track, like how I once tracked turnip prices in Animal Crossing, or an entire notebook I had just to keep track of the Pokemon I was breeding.

  • I love stationeries which means I have tons of notebooks and still feel I don’t have enough. And yes, I also have a lot of pens, markers, washi tapes… stamps and a lot more items. Thank you for these suggestions, I feel like I am on the right track! Haha~ I do use my notebooks for to-do lists/reminders, recipes, kdrama/netflix series and movies list… and thanks to this article, I think I will also start a dream log and a notebook for my favorite mantras and quotes! haha~ But because of these suggestions, I think I may need to buy more notebooks. Kidding! Ahaha~

  • I LOVE THIS! this is just sooo inspiring i saw this article and i asked my mom if we could go to a library tomorrow and she told me yes! I saved up all my money to buy a new notebook! Thank you so much! This means a lot to me cause i love to be organized and i love art so i can doodle on pages, plus, im a fan of flowers so i’ll stick some on pages for decoration! Thank you sooo much! I appreciate your work keep going, you’re doing perfect! On top of that your voice is amazing, you inspire people and you’re not boring! You’re just amazing! 💞💞❤️❤️💕💕💕

  • I am actually trying to start taking notes again. I stopped making notes in class 8 (had one single copy to jolt down all subjects’ imp. points) I recently got an iPad so I’ve kinda started taking notes on it but I really love the traditional note-taking way – feels more creative if you know how to own your style. I hope I’ll be able to fill lots of notebooks in future with beautiful notes of my college course✨✨

  • I LOVED this article. 😍 I have way too many notebooks because I intended them to be used for various things. One thing I wanted to try out which I did briefly was to journal for my children. They’re still so young and whenever they accomplish something or if they do something new that I want some sort of record of it to look back on. It would be great to add pictures, but just a simple record of my kid’s days would be nice to look back on. I did something similarly so when my 1st born was very young and I would jot it down on a family calendar I had in our kitchen. It was fun, and easy to maintain until the 2nd one was born. Now, however, since I’ve been bullet journaling for over 2 years, I’ve compiled quite a record of my children’s lives that are found strewn across its pages. I kind of which they were in a separate notebook just so that I could see how they’ve changed and grown. Also just to be able to add at the back of their notebook a list of friends and their parents that I used to meet often but never really got to know. I’m always astonished when they say “hey…. hows… this xyz going,” and I’m thinking, “Wow you remembered that? when did we speak last!?” It would be helpful to say the least ^_^

  • I really want to get into planning because I feel like I’m all over the place. I have a bunch of notebooks and I want to try to use them for different purposes. I’ve gotten into happy planners (I work at Joann 😅) lately. I laid out all the note books I have and ones I bought recently, and so far I’m using my unused campus notebook that I got for college as a skincare diary and analyze the products I use. I would like to use one for dealing with the death of my precious weenie baby. It’s been 10 months since her passing, and now my way of thinking has changed. So, I want to use it to remember the good times I had with her.

  • Thank you so much!, you gained yourself a subscriber for helping me on how to fill my 10 notebooks. I know it’s a lot but the information you gave is so good for me and the other people out there that has a lot of notebooks or sketchbook. Thank you and may I use this information when I’m bored ❤😊❤😊🎉🎉.

  • I HATE UME tea! One time I was there, my family and I were waiting at the counter for the people to take our order, but they took 5 minutes to even come! Also, when I went to my favorite boba place, iTea, I learned that UME tea had replaced it! They didn’t even have my favorite, widespread, drink, Jasmine milk tea!

  • As an aspiring law student, I plan on having a notebook about laws in the Philippines (Ph, cause that’s the country I live in) that peaks my interest. I would write the article, section, exact meaning in the code, general/easier meaning of the law for better understanding and actual real life cases involving that law. BUT, I’m to lazy to do so 💀

  • I love these ideas 💡 since I have atleast 20 books unwritten I’d like to use them so I decided to do something to not waste those precious books. Just wow! 😍☺️💐 Btw will the flowers / plants 🌱 on my book that I take from my garden will they eventually dry out or still look good! Can someone please tell me? I hope everyone’s journaling goes well and chill! 😇Bye bye have a good day/night/afternoon/evening :)🤩

  • How on Earth did the YouTube algorithm find out that I ordered more than 10 journal notebooks from Aliexpress, and that I have 10 more in my cart? Honestly, this does spook me out buuuuuut…..I’m glad I was exposed to this article. I was spooked out once more when you said, 3:44. Sheesh what is up with these big brothers and sisters??

  • the problem is that i dont draw and i dont like to write, i love to plan but i barely have time to even tick things off.So theres no point in writing and not ticking and it feels wrong to draw over lines in my book, its very special and pretty, and i dont want to make it a waste, and i cant do anything like all the markers and practice handwriting, ive already got a book for that.So im not gonna write plan draw or practice writing that is something that honestly cant be solved.

  • I have a book for planning projects and stuff for school and work and also clubs that I’m in at school and it’s helped me a lot in getting my life together and making it more organized and it’s literally been a godson if you are like my past self getting into a rut all the time because my to-does aren’t in one place I don’t know how to do a project or how to start something get a book dedicated to planning out projects and stuff for school one dedicated to to-do list whatever you need dedicate a book to it trust me it really helps 🙂

  • Around ten to eight hours ago I bought 11 pen + gear ruled page notebooks and comp books from walmart for about five dollars (because of a back to school sale) and so far I have found some use for two of those notebooks. Number One: Pet records, I have a lot of stray and adopted animals so I don’t have any records for them so I used one of the speckled notebooks to write down the following -Their Names -Date of birth or adoption -Health -Their dates of passing -Burial spots Number Two: NMPGP (Notetaking, MLA Practice, Grammar Practice) I go to an online school and I struggle with cheating so I hope this will help me in being more mindful and faster compared to just looking the lessons up online. I also forget most MLA formatting after a summer of doing nothing and as you may see from reading this comment, I struggle with even the most basic grammar. So all being said Two down ten more to go

  • If you create fanfiction articles on youtube I’ve a great idea (At least great for me) So for these type of articles we need songs which should matche with the scenes and emotion but at times we get confuse about which song will be perfect for that specific moment So what I did is I started listening to every song I like. Sad, happy, deep e.t.c. And then I categorized them according to the emotion they hold. It’s kinda fun to do as we get to listen songs and sometimes explore new songs this way So for example: Let me down slowly: Sad, kinda emotional e.t.c I hope you get the point . I mean it saves a lot of time as I don’t like to sit and think which song will be better as I think it’s a waste of time. Hope it’ll help. You can use it for other things too I guess 🙂

  • What I do when I’m bored: 1. Ask blathers in ACNH to tell me about something and write about what he said, he says a lot of very “smart” or helpful things that also could be used for school studying 2. If you learn something new that interests you in some way write it down! 3. If you just remembered an old memory and you don’t wanna forget it again, you could have a “memory journal” My ideas are very strange lol

  • When you read a script and you’re like “What this bitch say abouit me” hahahaha I am super guilty of having notebooks I’ve gotten even over 10yrs ago that I still haven’t used. Hell, some of them were gifted to me for specific purposes and I STILL didn’t use them xD I’m always scared that I’ll never have enough space if I do find a use for them or something, cause I write a LOT I do use my old tiny planner to have like passwords and other random reference info I need, as well as using it as a random notes thing. Since I also cosplay a lot and therefore have a ton of contacts, I needed to start writing down what colors I have and how long I’ve had them. I ALWAYS forget xD I also started using it to keep track of preorders cause lord knows I forget about those things after like a year

  • Another idea would be journaling, it doesn’t even have be about your day. It can be about how you feel, your thoughts on thing, your highs and lows of the day, etc. I journal daily and I do write about my day, but I also write how I’m feeling. If you need to find insperation to journal, or need help figuring out what to do, I would recomend perusal Carrie Walker. She doesn different journaling challenges and looks into genuine questions about journaling. The main reason I started journaling is so my older self can reflect on my past self and how I was feeling during that time. 😊

  • Can anyone have too many notebooks? My problem, when I am confronted with a wonderfully bound, heavy weight paper notebook I find myself saying, “Wait until you have something WONDERFUL to put in it.” So I wait and accumulate and end up using 50 cent notebooks from Walmart. It is a quandary. So many notebooks, so little time and stuff to write in them. These suggestions look great, but I’ll start with a cheapo notebook first and hopefully move up. Thanks!

  • AHHHHHHH……… I can’t Thank you enough because i have lots of notebooks and i don’t know what to do with them. I love Crafts and i do lot of Craft everyday but I’ve got bored. That’s why! When i saw your article… It just thankful me a lot. I’ve make a bullet journal, i made a food notebook It’s actually looks so nice when i decorated with stickers and the flowers. I really love your handwriting…… It’s very nice and neat. And Thank you Once Again.

  • An idea I recently came up with is sort of like scrapbooking, but for times in your life or specific things like time with family and friends. Whenever you go out with friends somewhere or go on a vacation, take a phone or camera, print out photos, stick them in and write any thoughts you had, quotes that align with it, or just write funny things people said! I might do it with a new notebook I got. Another option is tracing photos you take with a pen/pencil, if you want a more artistic feel or simply can’t print things 🙂

  • I like writing about certain topics for… literally no reason whatsoever. For some reason it brings me relaxation. I go online and just web-search things that pique my interest; wars, ancient kings/queens and more, however it can get as simple as just about colors or food. I almost never make up new topics, I write about things that have already happened. One of my favorites was when I was just scanning over which chocolate type I liked more. Turned out to be dark chocolate so sorry to any milk chocolate lovers out there

  • You can also use your notebooks to take notes when perusal useful articles….like this one. Write down the information you want to remember from the article so you can check back from time to time if you need a refresher. Or general note taking. I enjoy learning so I tend to take notes on the subject or subjects I currently find myself obsessing over. lol

  • I have an idea, it’s a boring one, but helpful for remembering stuff °So if you’re in school, doing like realk y difficult math, that’s hard to forget. Every day you can have a title to describe your math or whatever. Then for your future self, write instructions of how to do it, and the easiest strategy, write plenty of examples. And in summer or whenever you forget it, look back at it. It’s good g or notebooks you forgot you had. °I also like to practice drawing cute animals, I draw one every day, and now I’m really starting to get the hang of it. °this is a good thing for pages you have no ideas what to do with. If you’re like me, you have lots of markers that the color on the top of the don’t exactly look like the real color. My markers have little things on top of them that say stuff like, c4i3t2 so I mark it with a blackmpen, after I draw it non the page, and I have accurate color exampkes! ~Did this help you?

  • I just found this website, and I realized that I like writing but I struggle to do so because of my terrible hand writing. Im just to lazy and a bit scared to try writing again, unless school cause its school. Its always been something i thought about, I always loved writing fanfiction and daydream in my head.

  • Another thing to you can do. I remember getting this from somewhere on the internet but don’t remember where so whoever came up with this credit to them. When your feeling down, or when you wake up in the morning etc… Write down: 10 things you want to do in you future, right now or anything. 10 things your grateful for. 10 things that have happened to you before/ 10 childhood memories. This is a good way to destress and also feel good and grateful.

  • 1- creative book! (Drawing, doodling) 2-poetry book 3-calligraphy book 4-dream log (write down dreams before you forget them) 5- food diary (plan meals, write fav recipes or write and rate restaurants) 6-habit tracker 7-spending book 8-letter paper for perforated pages! You can check out there vid on how to write a letter 9- media list (list on what podcasts, movies to check out) 10-practice book (for hobbies, new language learning) 11-scrapbook 12-swatch book! (For searching all the pens and whashi tape u own) 13- task list (for to do lists, and things you wanna achieve for the day) Thank me later 🙂

  • If u would like to write stories on notebooks (take atleast 10-20 mins to read (i think)) if u play roblox play teafuls library and just note them down on ur notebooks if u ever forgot about the game Its an Interactive library with thousands of books around, its a huge library so just look at the map and then read!

  • You’re articles are so calm and very handy indeed, I am I have been inspired to be speaking Korean (I’m British) and I will definitely use notebooks to inspire my style around to other people as I’m a calm one, and aesthetic grunge type. I will start reading books and starting to not hate myself, you’ve really inspired me. ❤️❤️❤️💖💖💖✌🏽

  • Since my teacher loves poetry, we write a lot of poetry in out notebooks and say poetry with fun actions in front of the rest of our class sometimes the teacher pickes our groups, somtimes we can chose partners to do poetry with and somtimes we even do it by ourselves. We have lots of poetry and Ireland books in out class, about half of the books in our class are poetry books lol. We used to only do poetry on Friday but since we slipped off that and forgot, we do it any day my teacher chooses I used to be really shy but now I can speak in front of my class without being super shy. I’m still shy but a little less shy now.

  • It’s nice to feel validated. I’m the kind of person that sees interesting notebooks and just have to own them. I also tend to get halfway through a notebook, and then decide to change that notebooks “genre” so to speak. So if I’m writing primarily poetry, I’ll switch to writing fiction, or a combination. It’s my dream to write a collection of stories and poetry, so notebooks are perfect for this.
