Employers often learn about employment gaps on resumes through background checks. To address these gaps, be honest, concise, and proactive. Show how the gap added to your skill set and explain it in three places: on your resume, cover letter, and during your job interview.
Explaining an employment gap on a resume can be done by stating that you took family leave and have been the primary caretaker for your family for the last six months. Include in your response how the children will be cared for while working. Address the gap in the experience/timeline section of your resume.
On your cover letter, highlight new skills and offer a valid explanation for why you took it. Avoid hiding a career break by highlighting what you did during the break, such as childcare, personal medical issues, relocation, furthering education, gaining certifications or licensing, and volunteering. In the work history section of your resume, cover the employment gap by simply stating that you were raising children during this time.
In the interview, discuss how you used your time during this work gap and make part of it relevant to the job you are applying for. One proactive step to explain the gaps in work history is to make a brief note of the reason for your career gap in your cover letter.

I agree with you. Everyone should have gaps in their career. I feel it is impossible not to. After my father passed away, I travelled for a year. I feel this experience was very very valuable, meaningful and it was absolutely necessary. I actually stopped again working 10 years later to work on a children book which was released in 2021. And I don’t regret a thing. Life doesn’t just happen at work. Thank you for your super useful website! ❤
I have been a temp most of my life. I have always been behind the curve and got an Associate Degree in Supply Chain Mgt. later in life. My last major assignment of 12 months ended in May of 2020 at the height of the pandemic and I got covid a couple weeks later. That scared me silly and I didn’t work for 1 year after that because I really didn’t have to and I was terrified. I still can’t smell anything 2 years later, but I am still at temp. It seems that most companies want to higher a bachelor’s Degree or better and I have an extensive history of being a temp. I am not sure that even your superpowers can help, but you were indirectly responsible for helping me land my current position temporary as it may be. I am in a long-term contract of 12 months, but it Will end in the spring of 2023. Can you help?
I decompressed then got hired… but i was extremely overwhelmed. The seasoned nurses were calling off of working on the hall that they expected me as a new nurse to take on. So I quit. My blood felt like it was upto my ears and i was gonna pop my top. Im ok now but im scared to get back in the work force because of this gap
I was involved in a near fatal motorcycle wreck that left me as an amputee. I was a critical care nurse of 13 years. I have since spent the 3 years off gaining several certifications to branch into remote nursing and will be an asset to any company with my skillset. I am very anxious about this 3 year gap because I have been off work so long. Can you please help me?
I will never put up with harassment, sabotage, or a any form of disprespect like a manager shouting at me, or streching his arm right 2 inches of my face and pointing agressively hus finger to show me where i was supposed to look at . This is a NO NO. YOU DO IT ONCE NOT TWICE. I CHOOSE RESPECT AND DIGNITY. I am the one who bring value to the company if they can’t value or make they employees valued and respected, I have nothing to waist there. RESPECT AND WELL-BEING has no price. I work to live not the other way around. #MyselfFirst #NotYourDoormat #ChooseAnotherIdiot
