To clean a hat, start by filling a sink or basin with cool or lukewarm water and adding mild laundry detergent. Turn the hat inside out, massaging it in the water for a few minutes to remove dirt. Leave the hat in the soapy water for about 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly in cool water to remove all traces of soap. Do not twist or wring the hat. Hats absorb sweat, oil, and hair products, as well as dirt and grime.
Experts have explained four different cleaning methods depending on the type and sensitivity of the hat. The best way to wash a cap is by using warm water (around 30°C or 85°F) and a mild textile detergent without bleach (study the care label inside the cap first). Soak the hat for about half an hour, then rinse it under a tap running with cold water. Make sure the soap is completely rinsed out before washing.
To wash a cap, fill a clean sink or bucket with warm water and add a tablespoon of laundry detergent or OxiClean. Never wash a cap in a washer, but hand wash it with mild soap and use a tooth brush for scrubbing. Rinse well and let dry.

How to wash a Flexfit hat?
Washing a snapback or flexible baseball cap is generally not recommended as it can cause distorted or unrecognizable shapes and faded colors. However, if necessary, gentle hand-washing in cool or cold water with mild detergent or a stain-fighting treatment like OxiClean is recommended. Avoid using bleach-containing products. If stains are particularly problematic, spot clean with an old toothbrush, focusing on the stitching area.
After spot cleaning, soak the hat in soapy water for up to a couple hours, then spot wash persistent stains using a toothbrush, especially around stitched patterns and logos. Rinse the water off and pat down the hat with a clean dry towel.
To dry a wet hat, let it dry naturally in a well-ventilated space after blotting excess water with a cloth or towel. While some people try to dry the hat immediately with a hair dryer, it is strongly advised not to do so as the hot air may shrink the hat’s fibers and de-shape it.
How do you wash a sweaty hat?
Washing a sweat-stained hat is a simple process that involves filling a sink or bucket with cool or warm water, soaking the hat for 15 minutes, rinsing it with cool or warm water, patting it dry with a towel, reshaping it, and letting it dry completely. Some experts advise against washing the cap in the washing machine, such as Whirlpool and Maytag. Whirlpool suggests handwashing the cap to prevent bending and damage to its structure. Maytag suggests that the type of hat, such as cotton, a cotton blend, acrylic, or mesh, may be sturdy enough to survive the washing machine, especially if used on a gentle cycle and cold water.
Is it better to wash hats in hot or cold water?
To clean a baseball cap, place it in a mesh laundry bag and place it in the washing machine. Add detergent and choose the delicate cycle with cold water. After washing, reshape the cap and let it air-dry naturally. If the cap isn’t suitable for machine washing, try cleaning it by hand. Fill a basin or sink with water, avoid hot water, add natural detergent, and scrub the cap with a soft-bristle brush. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water, press the cap to remove excess water, and air-dry naturally. Reshape the cap if necessary. Always check the care tag before cleaning.
Does washing a hat ruin the brim?
Cardboard-supported hats, made before 1983, make a hollow sound when tapped or flicked, and can only be spot cleaned. Newer hats, made after 1983, typically have plastic-supported brims and are usually machine-washable. To spot clean a cardboard brimmed hat, dissolve a laundry detergent pod in warm water, dip a clean towel in the solution, and lightly buff out any stains on the cap or inner headband. For tougher stains, use a soft-bristled brush to pull the grime out of the fabric. Rinse the towel thoroughly and gently wipe the detergent off the hat. Allow the hat to air dry before enjoying.
How to reshape a hat after washing?
The instructions entail the insertion of material into the interior of the hat, the application of heat to facilitate the molding of the material to its original shape, the flattening of the hat, and the potential utilization of a steamer to impart a few additional rounds of heat.
Why can’t you wash hats?
To clean a baseball cap, look for a tag with fabric information and washing instructions. If the cap doesn’t have a care label, hand wash to prevent fading or structural damage. Avoid machine washing hats with rips or holes, as the washer motion can worsen them. Ensure the cap has a plastic or cardboard bill, as some older hats made before 1983 may have a cardboard bill that can be ruined in the washer. Spot clean hats with cardboard bills.
Wash the cap in cool water using a gentle cycle, pretreating tough stains with a non-bleach stain remover. Place the cap inside a laundry bag or pillowcase to protect it from potential damage from washer agitation. Add the cap to a small load of clothes to prevent matting and misshaping. Use a gentle cycle with slow spin speeds, cool water, and a mild detergent, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Can I put a hat in the washing machine?
To clean a hat without ruining it, hand wash it to prevent potential damage caused by machine washing. Fill a large container or bucket with water and check the hat’s tag to confirm its materials. Test detergents on a small area inside the hat to avoid damaging them. Most modern hats can be soaked in water and hand-cleaned. Add a dash of mild detergent to a bucket of water and stir. If stains are tough, use a stain remover and a toothbrush to pre-treat.
Soak for 15 to 20 minutes, or up to an hour for a deeper clean. Rinse the hat under cool water to remove any soap residue. Place the hat over a bowl to dry and shape, or stuff it with a towel to keep its shape. Hat cages are useful for drying and storing. I go the simple route, half cup of lukewarm water, couple drops dawn dish soap and the soft yellow side of a dish scrub (not the rough green side). Scrub lightly in circular motion. I make sure not to soak the hat with water, just enough to damp it a bit and get the stains out. Air dry over night, never under the sun and thats that. 👌🏼

I bought this protective cage thing that holds 1 hat to be throw in the dishwasher (I use my washing machine) and it worked okay but it got crazy one day and damaged the cage as well as the inside of my washing machine so I haven’t been able to wash my hats. My friend told me he cleans it with a brush like this article so I’ll have to try it. I have 20+ hats that need washing and I can’t do with washing 1 hat at a time.
My major problem is getting hair oils out of my hats. Even after soaking in Dawn and scrubbing the affected areas with a toothbrush, I get this waxy residue left over that just won’t come off. You can’t really spot treat as the entire bill and inner headband area is involved. I have yet to find a solution to this problem.
Great article…just what the doctor ordered. Used your method on my ball caps..worked great. Please don’t take this the wrong way…but if I could make one bit of constructive criticism re: your articles..slow down. You do tend to talk very fast, and at times it is hard to understand what you are saying. But ..having said that. I think your articles are great, and have a lot of great information in them. Well done. 😎👍
Thanks, for showing your method. Pro-tip; Use the product called “Awesome” found on same aisle as the expensive “Oxy-clean” cleaner. Awesome is 20X’s better and only $1 a bottle. Awesome also works on cloths. Next time find your worst condition hat and tell me what you think. I usually pre-Rinse hat, use a brush, then squirt awesome on hat and work in with brush, rinse and hang outside. Thanks, for showing your method.
