Can anyone be in Santeria?
In Cuba, people wearing white clothing are likely going through their Santería initiation, a ritualistic process that sets followers on la regla de ocha (the way of orishas). Followers are required to stay inside at night for a year and only dress in white. Only family members or lovers can touch the follower. Every follower is assigned to an orisha, with around 400 orishas, but only 20 are regularly worshiped in Cuba. Ochún, associated with the Virgin de la Caridad, is a popular saint, while Changó, the saint of fire and war, is associated with red and white.
Obatalá, the goddess of creation and peace, is associated with the Virgin de la Merced, and Yemayá, the goddess of motherhood, wears blue and white and is associated with the Virgen de Regla. Santeros often have statues of saints in their homes and may have altars where pastries, candles, fruits, and coins are offered to their orisha.
How do you find out your orisha?
An individual may establish a profound spiritual connection with a specific Orisha as a result of personal experiences, dreams, or intuitive insights. Additionally, divination systems and practices within the Yoruba tradition can facilitate the identification of one’s primary Orisha.
Who is the most feared Orisha?
The most feared Orisha, also known as Omolu, Omulu, Obaluaê, and Obaluaiê, is a powerful deity.
How long is the Ifa initiation?
The Òrìṣà or Egúngún initiation ritual is a seven-day process that infuses one with the spirit and power of their Òrìṣà, marking a milestone in spiritual progress. It allows individuals to connect with their spirituality, reshape religious perspectives, and gain a renewed sense of direction in life. Other related topics include Òrìṣà Devotion webinars, Òrìṣà, the Fundamentals, Òriṣà Praxis, Òrìṣà TV, and Yorùbá Language.
How are you initiated in Santería?
El plante is the first initiation ritual for those seeking to be initiated into Santería, a religious practice that involves receiving the first four santos, Eleggúa, Oggún, Ochosi, and Osun. These santos are chosen as protectors and receive blessings from the santo of divinations, Orula. All people have two santos, regardless of their location.
Not all people continue to the main initiation after performing the first ritual, as they may not need to go further due to financial constraints or not wish to get too involved. Hacerse santo, the second initiation, involves total involvement in the religion and a week-long ritual to receive the power of the santos that guide one’s life. The initiation also includes placing representations of the various santos in tureens on one’s personal home altar.
In summary, initiation into Santería is a significant step in one’s spiritual journey, with the first initiation ritual being the most important.
How do you know if you have Oshun energy?
Women with Oshun energy are independent, confident, and generous, loving freely without feeling victimized. They are kind and helpful, but not martyrs. They can communicate their needs effectively and listen to their partner’s needs. In an ideal world, relationships would be easy, with open communication and respect for each other’s needs. However, relationships are often difficult due to trauma, ego fixation, and withholding affections. To overcome these challenges, connecting with the goddess Oshun can help give love with ease and help move on if love is not reciprocated.
She reminds us that the only love we need is the love for ourselves, allowing us to act from a place of abundance, which can attract and sustain healthy relationships. By connecting with Oshun, we can move forward and find love for ourselves, fostering a more fulfilling and fulfilling relationship.
What are Orishas rituals and customs?
Santeria rituals allow humans to maintain contact with the Orishas through activities like dancing, drumming, speaking, and eating with the spirits. These rituals are typically held in rented halls or privately in Santeria homes, which may be equipped with altars for ritual purposes. The Orishas can meet believers at these sacred spaces during appropriate rituals. Material for Santeria rituals can be purchased from specialist outlets called botánicas.
Are there bad Orishas?
Historically, the Yoruba worship Olorun through the agency of the orisa, who represent everything and everywhere. There is controversy about whether Olorun is directly worshiped due to their aloofness from humanity or the belief that Olorum is the manifestation of life and existence. However, some worship Olorun directly, as it is the origin of virtue and mortality, and bestows knowledge upon all persons upon birth. Olorun is omnipotent, transcendent, unique, all knowing, good, and evil.
These orisa or orishas are supernatural beings, both good (egungun) and bad (ajogun), representing human activity and natural forces. They are all harmonious, possessed of equilibrium and worth. Olorun is considered the Lord God of Heaven and the source of creation.
How much is a Santería initiation?
Santería is a traditional Yoruba religion that involves initiation, also known as kariocha or “making ocha”. The cost of initiation varies depending on the practitioner’s status and the client’s wealth. In Cuba, it is often equivalent to a year’s wage, with an initiation costing around US$500 for Cuban nationals and between US$2, 000-3, 000 for foreigners. In the United States, an initiation was reported as costing as much as $10, 000 in 1989 and between $15, 000 and $20, 000 in 2001.
Santería initiation ceremonies are carried out for adults, although they can also involve children. Each initiation varies in details, but practitioners often try to maintain secrecy around the process. The initiate is known as an iyabó or iyawó, meaning both “slave of the orisha” and “bride of the orisha”. An oyubona, who acts as a secondary godparent to the new initiate, may attend the ceremony.
The process of initiation takes place over seven days, with an additional two days of preparatory rituals. Before the main ceremony, a misa espiritual is often held to gain the blessings of the ancestral egun. An ebó de entrada (“opening sacrifice”) is also held one day before the main events. The ceremonia del río (ceremony of the initiate) involves the oyubona and the initiate, offering honey and the ochinchín omelette to the oricha Ochún, and the oyubona engages in divination to determine if Ochún has accepted the sacrifice.
What happens after Ifa initiation?
Ifa initiates undergo a ceremonial journey into the underworld after undergoing the rite of iku (death), which is considered a place of regeneration and the womb of rebirth. The journey involves being covered in a cloth bag that acts as an oversized blindfold, and the experience tests the courage of the initiate. One participant experienced hyperventilation due to a lack of oxygen inside the bag, which led to a struggle for air and eventually, a fainting spell. Fortunately, the initiates caught them before they hit the ground.
The experience was not part of the initiation process, and the descriptions of how they keeled over became a source of teasing. The experience was a significant aspect of the initiation. After returning to the United States, the symbolic journey through the underworld evoked memories of a childhood near-death experience, which led to an irrational feeling of claustrophobia. The near-death experience involved suffocation under a pillow.
Who does Santeria pray to?
Santería practitioners engage in the worship of orichas, which are regarded as powerful and mystical spirits that represent God, the supreme being of the Yoruba religion. These orichas are understood to serve as spiritual intermediaries between God and humans.

Oshun came to me when I quit playing piano for church. I’ve been a Christian all my life but I was so depressed. My family and husband were wonderful, but I sufferered from anxiety and depression due to low self esteem and severe anxiety. When my best friend since preK died suddenly at 30, it broke me. I left my Christian church because i wasnt getting healing. I’ve been Christian all my life. Oshun came to me when I was meditating through a panic attack. I “fell asleep” and woke up in a dark space above earth. I saw a bright glowing female being. She felt familiar so i wasnt scared. She was standing there holding me in her hand. There was a broken mirror shattered and floating in front of me. She told me to put the pieces together. Confused, I did. Each piece had a defining moment in my life, the good and the bad and the ugly. I cried putting the pieces together. She made me feel my husband’s pain…of loving a wife who was mentally distant. That one hurt bad. When I put the pieces together I saw my reflection but it was a version of me I had never seen before. A future version that was truly happy. Oshun smiled and I fell back to earth. I realize now that everything I went through, made me who I am today. And I would find joy in life so I don’t regret it later. I didn’t know anything about my African history until I met her. I never called on her by name. She heard my cry I guess.
I don’t want to be disrespectful but I as I was doing my meditation and I felt so sad and lost and I keep asking myself “who am I” and I swear I heard something say “oshun” I’ve only ever heard of that name one time, I’ve never look her up until yesterday and when I saw her pictures I just felt like that’s me but it’s not me, I just felt like I was finally at home with peace
I think my great grandmother brought both Oyá❤️ and Yemaya💙 to me. My hair was so long and my body was so so ancestrally beautiful, dancing in the ocean with them. I make offerings, and my prayer closet was torn apart by a hateful Jezebel spirit when evil was sent towards to me and my Orishas walked with me through this travel. And I was baptized in the ocean this year.
For all those here who believe you don’t need to be initiated it’s a lie. I was misguided by my family for years both here and in Nigeria. I searched for initiation for so long and got involved with fake babalawos both in the family and in the UK. It was the Orisa who spoke to me and have always done so. It was Orisa who informed me that I would wear my crown and they were correct. Initiation doesn’t make you a priest priestess or a babalawo. Be wise and know we are aspects of the supreme power we are not the supreme power there is a higher power and if we pay attention we will be guided to the truth. Initiation is part of an individual’s process and purpose. Please do not be fooled by the foolish.
I feel as though I’ve always been connected to Yemaya. Even before I knew who she was I would see her. I even have a tattoo of her because I dreamt of her so many times. I am not initiated but I want to get to know her. I just do not want to offend her. But I also know that I need to connect with my ancestors and myself first as well.
For me, I thought it would be cool to scare my little cousins with Santeria stories, so I started researching, and then I got into it. I was listening to the rapper Oshun one night and I suddenly smelled this powerful fragrant smell like some angel had wandered into my bedroom wearing perfume. It smelled like oranges and sweetness and bergamot. My favourite smells. Ever since then, I’ve been working with Oshun a little bit. I’m not even black. I’m a quarter Puerto Rican and that’s how I know about Santeria at all.
Yemaya just came to me and lm not initiated..So now lm in the process of setting up her alter…First, Oshun came aboit 3 years ago, then Elegua few months ago, and now Yemaya. And about 4 years ago, l had a clear dream of Obatala. So yes, l believe they can come to you even if you didn’t know everything about them.
Eleggua shows up in my dreams a lot, especially in child form. Lately, since doing my washes I’ve been getting visitations from my great-grandparents and other ancestors. In my family tradition, one needs to be initiated if one is committing into it fully. It really depends on the readings, which is why the real babalawos and grandparents will tell you to first connect with your ancestors, get to know your family past, connect with spirits, and doing research, they encourage misas and connect with spirits, do your own card readings or study divination or fortune telling. One learns for oneself before initiation to go into the religion deeper. I had heard of family members who got initiated and have become full blown babalawos/iyalawos, while others got the beginning initiation rituals (got their warriors officially and that is it) and are casual practitioners. It depends on what path the spirits have for you and they always give a sign. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. It truly depends on the path you are choosing as well as those of the spirit world. That is why readings are very important to give you guidance. Ase.
My connection started in 2012 with oshun over a dream I was told I was the godess of love but prior to that experience like 38 yrs ago my father always called me sirenita meaning little mermaid I was a young swimmer water and I have always been very connected never been afraid of the ocean I have always felt at home🌬🌊💙 I don’t practice but there is a knowing I don’t know what I am doing but she speaks to me through dreams very vivid I can see her skin her hair the honey yellow flower peddles oshun in the lake.. I feel her in my being and now yemaya the mother of all she came to me and now I understand why…💙 she want to help me again I don’t know what I am doing but intuitively through them and I am so grateful it’s been an emotional day for me today 12/31/21 ⭐🧜♀️⭐🌬🌊💙💛💚
The initiation is a front to get money to keep their business running…. 500 years ago you didn’t need validation or had to pay ppl to connect with your ancestors you just simply had a family dinner with your family and celebrated the life of your ancestors, dieties and spirits… That initiation is for people who wants to be priests and be obligated to be slaves to these guys in these organizations which are runned by former prostitutes, murderers and homosexuals… You have to be a total ignorant person to tell someone they’re not a child of God or a member of they’re own ancestors just because you don’t know them and feel that the only way to have God on yo side is to hang around them😂 Santeria is a Catholic based religion and I’m a baptized Catholic
I was out shopping and I came across a stone head; my first thoughts was to create an altar and schedule offerings. I’d given it candy and trinkets, before I’d leave my house since I was hoping to secure a new path (career wise). This is before I even knew about Elegua. It was so strange to me that I began doing this without prior knowledge. I later began to research and learned so many images I’d seen in dreams, were tied to different Orishas. Another notable dream, was being amongst women in all white on the beach under the moonlight — glowing blue light — we danced and sang to the waters. Eventually a child emerged and crawled into my hands. Beautiful dreams that lead me to study the Orishas.
My YouTube had started sending me Oshun mantras so i listen to them for like two nights because they sounded beautiful, one night I woke up to go to the restroom and as I walked back to my couch “no joke” for a glimpse of a moment I saw a dark skinned woman sitting on my couch looking ahead i remember seeing like jewelry that looked more like white beads or shells & her clothing was tribal It startled me but I realized it was my blanket kinda posted up but for a small min God honest I saw a woman sitting near my bedding & she scared me she looked like she was not to be played with. I dont do alters ect but I’m looking for answers if anyone who is familiar with this spirituality can explain to me & I think it’s weird because that’s never happened to me in that sense the only thing different I had been doing is listening to the Oshun Mantra & singing it a little bit. I could just be trippen or something lol or who ever she is she wanted me to know she was there. Honest to God it took me back for a sec but I just layed back down.
I think yemaya has been subtly reaching out to me over this past year. Ive been doing astrology for 8.5 years but divination only for about 1.5 years. I only feel now that I’ve really become good at this craft and upon that progress I’ve noticed a few things. I’ve felt myself draw to mermaids and the ocean. I’ve had dreams about these two things too and I’ve made purchases that I didn’t realize ties into this feeling. Papa Legba has made his presence known to me subconsciously. I think Yemaya and Papa Legba are reaching out to me, mostly Yemaya. I’m worried though. I don’t know if my ancestors will accept me, idek if I can say I have ancestors. I’m black and Mexican and I know I’m black which is a good start but I’m worried about my Spanish side, I feel like I’m not accepted, like I’m inadequate, or allowed to worship them/work with them/call them my ancestors, etc.
A sizeable number of these accounts usually explore the historical evidence from ancient Egypt. Although, such historical traditions differ from one school of thought to another, some modern historians of Yoruba descent insist that the Yoruba originated from Egypt. Aries=Ogun Taurus= Oshun Gemini= Ibeji Cancer= Yemoja Leo= Orunmila Virgos= Eshu Libra= Oba Nani Scorpio= Oya Sagittarius= Obatala Capricorn= Babaluaye Aquarius= Shango Pieces= Olokun Aje They were acclaimed as the forefathers of the Yoruba people who were responsible for the earliest Egyptian civilization. The incursion of the Arabs saw them migrated from mainland Egypt to other side of Nile valley and subsequently to where they are now.
I have family that were involved in these things but when they discovered that they were dealing with fallen angels they gave it up and turned to Jesus for help and deliverance. What you call energy is new-age and is connected to spiritualism which is dealing with the same fallen angels of Revelation 12. Try to renounce the practice and give up the sacrifice and see what will happen.
I am not officially initiated into the Ifa tradition but I’ve been feeling the calling of the orishas powerfully for the past few years. First orisha i connected with was Oya. Then Obatalá, then most recently Yemaya has visited me when I was going thru my worst emotional pain, especially when I was struggling with forgiveness for a lot that happened in my past. Ive put out there my desire to be initiated, and since then, one by one the orishas have been coming to me for me to get familiar with and I see my spiritual development growing with the Ifa tradition.
I’m new to all of this. I’m very empathic and a healer and seer. I’ve studied Egyptology and Kemetic religion. I sook out Ifa guides and several pushed me away. One Ifa priestess told me I was a chaneller. I took a vacation and gathered books on Ifa and hoodoo, geomancy, and moon magick. I went to Vermont to visit and was met with sunflowers everywhere then I found a raw hugh crystal in the dirt. Once I returned from my trip I was led to dig in the dirt finding two shells ( I live on an Island). A voice told me how to use them for divination,. When I asked who she was, the answer was Oshun, Shango has also come to me since. Oshun chose me. I knew nothing about Orisha’s not because iI didn’t want to but because I was pushed away. The Goddess knows my heart and is now teaching me directly. Everyone had a different experience. However, mine is firsthand without initiation. I feel I already was initiated in past lives that’s why the priestess couldn’t touch me because I’m from a higher order. This is how my experience was explained to me..Ashe’
all the Orishas are our spiritual faculties…we use them each and every second of our lives..dall situations require their input….they are NOT seperate entities from “us”….they make up our person and correspomd to all our readily available personality types… an underlying understanding of the Orishas requires gnosis of its root reality 1st discovered in Ancient Kamit…”coming to you”? …who is they ? and who are you they supppse to come to? … theyre always with “you” as you the person, even when slumbering..and it takes nothing but Hekau / words of power to awaken them along with their signature of qualities…Ra Un Nefer Amen, a master cosmologist, gives a thorough scientific breakdown of this in his Metu Neter series.
Last year i WENT UP and seen OLODUMARE while dreaming. He was a GIANT sitting in between a cloud. I went all the way to his face! He turned and looked at me . he frowned and his giant hand raised smacked me back into my body! I woke shaking it felt like a seizure, i went through a world wind of changes! Much like Oshun flying up to reach him. I had never encountered his story before then but i know who i SAW. Other Gods from different pantheons have come to me as well. But Olodumare os the only enity Ive gone to see.
I so appreciate you and guest today. So glad I came across your tube. I had no idea what an orisha was 3 years ago. One day I began having incidents with bees, water, number 5 in a huge mass . My favorite color is pink but yellow began to form in my world and I had no idea where it was coming from. Conversations were forming distinct words that made me stop and remember. But then the biggest was every morning I would put a serene youtube on my tv and for three days it automatically sent me to one particular orisha and the songs mesmerized me that i could not move until the song was completed. I began to researcch the name and the songs. I began asking questions to an Ifa mother and she opened a lot up to me. I do believe they will come to you unknown to you but will make selves so present that you cannot resist. Thank you ever so much!
The comments are preposterous and unfortunate; wilfully (in this current day, 2022) folks have sought out education & training and have gained a better understanding. Please do not pervert OUR tradition– this is a problem in modern day. There’s a difference between being an Aborisha, Olorisha, Iyawo, Oluwo, etc…please get educated.
I believe that Oshun is one of my spirit guides. It just happened. Honestly, I think she was a gift from God. I also think Jesus is another one of my spirit guides. I couldn’t possibly relate, or belong. Sucks since I am so disconnected and can’t find my tribe in general. But that’s apart of my burden and my path. I mean, I’m white. Late middle aged at that. And I know how judgemental and hypocritical people are. Personally, I don’t need brass bracelets and shiny gold altars. I certainly don’t need cruel animal sacrifices! I don’t even need to know and understand all the terminology and tradition. I just know that there is this one force in my life. Unlike God and Jesus, this force likes reciprocity. Offerings. It’s a destiny force. A nature force. An authority. A force of destiny. Unlike an all accepting God, this force has done some mean things…and caused some big things to happen. A car accident. A herniated disk. Inflamed pancreas… so that I’ll nock off my hormone pills. I had to have a tooth pulled. The number was significant. All of these things that keep happening seem to have great significance and are happening in ways that resulted in something better. I don’t need someone else for divination help. I use cards mainly. And I have full trust. No doubt that I will have the right message. And I do. I got nobody at all to talk to about any of this. I only know that spiritually, I am very open. As long as there’s no harm. But I feel like a total misfit. Spiritually, I would just get judgement from others for believing in God and Jesus AND Oshun AND spirit guides AND divination AND synchronicities.
I believe they can. I had one come for my child. At first I thought she was there for me but she rejected my offerings, multiple times and I didn’t resonate with her energy. I realized she came to me during pregnancy and must be for my child and joy me ❤. I choose Oya and got my confirmation from a spirit worker who told me my calling was wind and movement, Oya ❤
This is gonna sound a little out of the bat when I was a teen I felt called to Oshun and decided to learn more n practice I then reverted back to agnostic again due to depression n lack of trying but I felt like after being assaulted I truly needed that additional love and support from my ancestors and I receive that and I am forever grateful of that and I will never doubt the existence but A little girl named Oshun Started bringing me dandelions constantly brought me so much joy she was so sweet she was so kind and every time I think “oh I wish my kid was like this” I don’t have a kid but I’m now pregnant and that was around the time when I realized I was pregnant didn’t know didn’t Attempt and this is 3 years of having mild infertility. I chose to keep the Pregnancy because I felt called to so so um anyone have any clue. I’m talking unprotected sex for years no pregnancy every time I thought I was pregnant i’d always get my period right after a pregnancy test so I thought it was the same thing again. I truly feel like it was a gift and I felt blessed it was just a riugh first trimester now it’s better but like I still lack the support but I’m working on it. Is this a far stretch?
I took a spiritual bath and prepared in a “certain” way. I was very very very hungry afterwards. I have worked with Oshun many times but that moment…I believe she chose me at that moment. Friday’s from 5:55 am to 5:55 am the next day I stop giving thanks. Through out the weeks other than her day “Friday”, I chant to her and let her know I care. But I’ve done this since 2018. 💛🍯🧘🏾♀️💯 and I give blissing to Oba. 🙏🏿💕
Do you have any advice for those looking to be initiated? I am a Pagan / Witch. I have been trying to connect more with my African heritage and also incorporate it into my spiritual practices. I had a lot of trouble connecting with any other Gods, Goddesses, or spirits so far, (or even Orishas) especially as most witchcraft communities can be very eurocentric when it comes to these…It wasn’t until learning about the Orisha named Aja, that I felt a genuine true connection. I have become immediately drawn to her. I have been working on my very first altar and have a statue of her surrounding various symbolism of nature and the earth. This is a sacred space to me and I do almost all of my work here unless I’m in nature. I would really love to have a priestess work with me and help me progress in my spiritual journey, I live in France so it is a bit hard to find resources for now, but if anyone has any information or advice on being initiated, it would be greatly appreciated.
I’m here because I dreamt of a little girl called Oyo who wanted me to be her mother. I’m not sure yet but I think I herd Oyo but maybe it was oya…in my culture we use o at end of a word to describe a masculine.version of it…so Idk…and shouldnt I be her daughter and not the other way around? So this little beautiful dark skinned girl called Oyo ( masculine version of the name oya)asks me to adopt her, and I have been receiving a lot of syncs from what represent her aspects…I’m here to learn lol teach me.thank you.
I’m Norse pagan and im of European decent I had a very vivid dream of elegua the other day ive never worked with him or any deities outside of my practice and to my knowledge none of my family or friends have either I’m very confused and I wonder what he was trying to tell me from what I’ve read he has very similar personality traits as Loki which whom I do work with should I get a reading? Any recommendations or thoughts on what he could’ve been trying to tell me? Thank you blessed be ❤
I had a High Priestess reach out to me a couple weeks ago. I didn’t know too much about prior to then. I didn’t want to offend her by all the questions I had swimming in my mind. I held the feeling of skepticism because she’s from the Motherland. She said she didn’t want money because it’s not allowed, but she told me I’d need to cash app.her so that she could get some supplies for an offering to appease the ancestors. In return, just as you’ve mentioned above, she would visit the Orisha lake. I know that it’s not to be taken lightly, but how do I know if she’s genuine. Should I build a relationship with her?
Goddess Oya came to me in my sleep when I was going to do a self initiation before going to bed in 2010. She called my name constantly and said her name was Oya and she wanted to work with me. She spoke in a soft voice and just repeating that she wants to work with me and to remember her name. I woke up the next day remembering what she said. Then Elegba came to me in my sleep and said he wanted to work with me and his name was repeated. Till this day I always get confused rather it’s Elegba or elegua
Whatever Orisha works with Leos is mine specifically but when considering throwing my dreams into context, because of the visions I may have, dreams I’ve had, the signs or whatever and after doing so much work with myself spiritually…I know that there is a significance or a particular relationship that I have between me & Shango !!!
I’m scared 😦 turns out the angels I’ve been seeing my whole life are orisha they show me visions tell me things to come in my dreams they come I light incense frankincense and Murrh. When I sleep cuz I got insomnia really bad I Astro project into the spirit realm and there they are . I grew up in the Bible is an angel an orisha and the annunaki the same thing
Well I started dreaming of Yemaya, her as a child. .. She came to me. .. My family never knew of the beautiful Orishas. .. I just started learning about her more this year because I was getting readings from my good friend & I ask about who she was. .. She always happy to see me I’m thankful for that. .. I’m not working of yet but once I get aligned with mami I don’t mind ✨🤍💙
