The Albany Movement was a significant movement in the late 1960s and 1970s, aimed at ending all forms of racial segregation in Albany, Georgia. It began in 1961 as a collaboration between local activists, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and the Southern Leadership Conference (SCLC). The movement’s leaders also decided to broaden their protest to include an economic boycott of the city’s segregated transit system. The movement was initiated for the purpose of fighting segregation laws and policies in Albany, Georgia.

Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Leadership Conference joined the movement in December 1961, providing a shot in the arm to the desegregation movement that was gathering new members.
