Couvade syndrome, also known as sympathetic pregnancy, is a condition where men with pregnant partners experience symptoms of pregnancy, such as nausea and weight gain. This condition remains a medical mystery but reveals the transformative nature of fatherhood and how society misunderstands it. It is an involuntary manifestation of pregnancy in men with a partner expecting a baby. The cause is believed to result from a mix of psychological, social, and physiological factors, including the emotional bond with the pregnant partner.
Sympathetic pregnancy, or couvade syndrome, is when a non-pregnant partner experiences pregnancy-like symptoms, such as nausea, weight gain, and fatigue. It is best characterized as a somatic symptom disorder where the partner experiences somatic symptoms during their partner’s pregnancy most frequently. If a pregnant partner receives an unemployment, sickness, or salary-linked WGA benefit, they will qualify for paid maternity leave.
The idea that a non-pregnant partner can feel the effects of pregnancy themselves is a real concern. Studies have reported that expectant fathers experience physiological and psychological changes during their partner’s pregnancy. Couvade syndrome is a term used to describe a wide variety of physical and psychological symptoms that men feel while their partner is pregnant.

Can I stop working at 27 weeks pregnant?
Working while pregnant depends on the job and the individual’s health and risk of pregnancy complications. If the job is not physically demanding or hazardous, you can continue working until your due date. However, some professions may require modifying tasks due to long hours or heavy lifting. There is no fixed time for maternity leave, as each job takes different physical, emotional, and mental tolls. It’s essential to weigh all options, including your health and financial situation, to determine the best course of action for you and your baby.
If you continue working until your baby is born, take time to rest and prepare. If you can afford to start maternity leave a week or two before your due date, consider using that time to rest, prepare, and take care of yourself.
How long does a man get off when his wife has a baby?
Paternity leave entitles new parents to two weeks of leave from work, regardless of whether they are employed or self-employed, commencing within six months of the birth of their child. Paternity leave is typically taken by fathers and is available to same-sex couples. It should be noted that employers are not obliged to provide remuneration during the period of paternity leave. However, it is possible to qualify for a Paternity Benefit.
When does couvade syndrome end?
Couvade syndrome is a psychosomatic disorder characterized by physical and psychological symptoms experienced by men during pregnancy. These symptoms typically appear in the first trimester, subside in the second trimester, and return more intensely in the third trimester. These symptoms often disappear after the baby is born or shortly afterward. Common physical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, heartburn, appetite changes, toothache, weight gain, food cravings, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Some expectant fathers may also experience psychological well-being symptoms like mood swings, nervousness, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.
Has a woman ever gotten pregnant without a man?
Single women and lesbian couples frequently utilize sperm donation as a means of achieving pregnancy. There are three primary avenues through which this may be accomplished: These include intrauterine insemination (IUI), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and in vitro fertilization (IVF). In certain instances, oocyte donation may be required, entailing the utilization of donor oocytes.
Is 36 weeks too early for maternity leave?
In the case of typical and uncomplicated pregnancies, the commencement of leave is permitted at the 36-week mark, with the treating clinician having the authority to modify this timeframe in accordance with the specific complications present.
Why do husbands gain weight when wife is pregnant?
Studies suggest that expectant fathers may experience hormonal changes, such as prolactin, testosterone, and cortisol, which could lead to weight gain. However, there are few studies to test this idea. Men may pad out during pregnancy due to their burdened partners’ eating and resting habits. In food-rich Western societies, it’s difficult to determine if gaining weight is an advantage for a new dad.
Can I go on maternity leave early due to stress?
Maternity leave can be beneficial for those experiencing stress or burnout, as it allows them to prepare for a new life and take time for themselves. However, there is no universally accepted time for maternity leave, as each family’s situation is unique. Factors such as income level, support levels, work situation, physical and mental health history, and the number of children involved can influence the best time to take leave. Joyce Marter, a licensed psychotherapist, recommends a minimum of four weeks for a baby’s healing, bonding, and settling into a new life.
The best way to determine when to take maternity leave depends on various factors, including income level, support levels, work situation, physical and mental health history, and the number of children.
Do husbands get sick when wife is pregnant?
Couvade syndrome, also known as sympathetic pregnancy, occurs when a pregnant woman’s partner experiences symptoms that mimic pregnancy. Men may experience constipation, gas, bloating, irritability, weight gain, and nausea while their partner is expecting. This condition is usually temporary and not serious, and may be caused by stress, empathy, or hormonal changes in expecting dads. Anecdotal evidence supports the idea of sympathetic pregnancy, with some mothers experiencing similar symptoms while their partners are expecting. For example, one BabyCenter mom-to-be experienced constipation, gas, bloating, irritability, and nausea while his wife’s pregnancy was underway.
How to stop couvade syndrome?
Couvade syndrome is a temporary condition for which there is currently no recommended treatment. Nevertheless, strategic approaches such as meditation or psychotherapy have been demonstrated to be effective in alleviating symptoms. It is theorized that men experiencing depression or extreme stress may benefit from these treatments. It is crucial to acknowledge the possibility that both partners may be experiencing similar symptoms and to recognize the potential for mutual support and assistance.
Is Couvade syndrome psychological?
Couvade syndrome, also known as sympathetic pregnancy, is a term used to describe men experiencing symptoms that mimic those experienced by their partners during their pregnancies. It has been linked to ritualistic behaviors practiced by ancient peoples, where men pretended to be pregnant during their partners’ pregnancies and enacted similar experiences of being pregnant, including imitating labor and delivery. Couvade syndrome could be connected to the shifting perspectives on fatherhood and the more participatory role expectant dads may play during pregnancy and childbirth.
Traditionally, the role of the father has been socially constructed as the provider and protector, but today, it is common for fathers to take on a more prominent role in their partner’s pregnancy, attending prenatal appointments, participating in childbirth, and practicing skin-to-skin contact with their newborn. As dads become more deeply involved in pregnancy, they may become more conscious of any pregnancy-related symptoms they are experiencing themselves, contributing to a greater awareness of couvade syndrome.
Men can experience various pregnancy-related symptoms, both physical and psychological. Some studies suggest that sensitive male subjects with pregnant partners experience physiological symptoms of pregnancy as a way to deal with the psychological distress of becoming a father, such as “compathy”, which refers to the symbiotic sharing of feelings. Another theory is that men may develop pregnancy symptoms as part of a phenomenon called “loading”, where they psychologically feel and take on the suffering of someone else, manifesting it physically. Hormonal changes in the expectant dad may also play a part in couvade syndrome, though research thus far is inconclusive.
How rare is couvade syndrome?
Couvade syndrome, a condition affecting nonpregnant partners, is relatively common, with a 2007 review stating that symptoms may affect up to 97 of them worldwide. The cause is believed to be linked to the emotional response to preparing for parenthood, with nonpregnant partners who actively participate in their partner’s pregnancy, labor, and delivery experiencing elevated feelings of empathy. This can lead to them taking on some of their partner’s physical pain and discomfort.

As a current pregnant lady, this is actually extraordinary. My other half has a cold in the same nostril as I, he’s headachy and has leg soreness like I do… he even had a stomach upset when I did! I genuinely thought he was playing me up. He’s a deeply empathetic man, very caring but tends to hide it. He’s oddly feeling some symptoms that I have.
Had this problem with my first son.. was feeling very weak everyday, had to lay down for a while then got my energy back, went to the doctor did some blood work and everything was ok with me. After my girl give birth we went in the recovery room I got this really bad headache that lasted for an hour and after the headache all my symptoms was gone just like that! Now she’s pregnant with my second son and I’m having the same problem but this time a lot more.. Trouble breathing, urge to take deep birth and can’t get it out right. Anxiety, back pain, sensation of toothache. Leg cramps.. chest pain… though I was gone have a heart attack lol.. feeling hot in my stomach.. itch skin.. I was feeling scare and lonely even tho we live together…. To overcome your symptoms try not to worry about it.. think of a happy moment in ur life.. got on the phone with friends..
First of all, I hope everyone is doing better with their pregnancy symptoms. Have your symptoms improved so far guys? Asking for prayers since my wife is finally going to give labor in 2-3 days since she’s at high risk for developing blood clot due to protein c deficiency She will start heparin then be induced 🙏 As for me my symptoms have improved but still feel exhausted, tired legs and arms, minor anxiety, and brain fog with light sensitivity:/ hopefully this goes away soon after pregnancy 🤞not only for me but for all of you my peeps 👍 Stay safe and I will keep you guys posted 👌Thanks!!
My boyfriend and I lived in separate homes when I was pregnant. We were unaware that I was pregnant. He got really sick, thing is he never gets sick so we were looking for remedies. I noticed changing in my body and well my period was late. We took a test turns out I was pregnant. He felt all the symptoms before I did. It was funny because weeks before I was telling that men feel the symptoms as well and he doubted that theory. We ended up losing the baby but that was my crazy pregnancy story
My wife is 5 months and 2 weeks pregnant and my symptoms started with severe anxiety followed by depression, fear of being a lone, scared, tension headaches, indigestion Lost of appetite, nausea, morning sickness, loss of concentration. Some symptoms have ceased which I’m glad but continue to have indigestion, sensitivity to certain foods minor stomach cramps. It came to a point I would check my blood pressure every 5 min since I was scared something bad was going to happen to me. I did go to the ER about 7 times and blood work came out normal haha!! It’s hard but gotta be strong for my the wifey and count my blessings!!
I woke up the other night ago sick as a dog, throwing up at both ends to put it nicely, my wife had fertility issues and we we’re about to undergo treatment to help her get pregnant next month. When I was sick I just thought it was a stomach bug and the next day my wife tested positive for pregnancy but neither of us knew it, my brain and body knew she was pregnant before I did and we didn’t even need treatment after all, about to have our first now. Glory be to God because we never thought we’d be able to have kids naturally and this is a miracle.
My husband only had morning sickness during the first pregnancy. But, in the second pregnancy, he had morning sickness, hormone changes, cravings, belly growth and even had to pee more frequently than me. It was funny though. I would make fun of my family members who warned me about this. I truly thought they were all being dramatic during their pregnancies and even told my brothers that they just wanted the attention. All up until my pregnancies. It’s no joke. Wow. How magical is this world? lbvs
It is not sympathetic. My X boyfriend asked if I was pregnant because he was getting morning sickness. He was also a mean narcissist. He wouldn’t dare feel sympathy for another human being, but he was right in knowing that I was pregnant. So, this is very real, but it has nothing to do with men caring. It can happen despite how inhuman a man is.
My wife and I had our daughter October 4th 2023 and I gained about 15 pounds. I lost it fairly quick after she gave birth but being the dog I am got her pregnant again. We are now expecting a son on September 15th 2024. Yea, 11 months apart and the 15 pounds is back baby! I try not to be hard on myself about the weight gain as my 10 month old has started crawling on my belly while I lay on my back and uses my belly to help her stand so I’m in no rush to take away her joy. My advice is to enjoy all the changes as it will go away before you know it.
My wife is 3 months pregnant & I am mostly experiencing small discomforts in my gut area…. Not really pain but its uncomfortable at times…. It comes and goes and I wonder if this is normal….. cuz I dont feel pain in my testicles at all….. so I wonder if this is just something temporary til our child is born cuz my wife isnt experiencing much pain nor cramps at this point
Hello everyone, I already commented about a few of my symptoms but have read a lot of comments and a lot of people tend to be getting these symptoms in second trimester, my girlfriend is only 8 weeks pregnant now and I have had these for a few weeks, I have read a lot and learned it can be down to connection between you and your partner, I have been with my partner 6 years now, since I was 13 years of age so I think that’s why mine may have started so early and so severe, has anyone else experienced it so early ? I am freaked out I can’t breathe properly at the moment (not Covid related) nausea eased a little bit but came back with a vengeance and very bad increased anxiety and depression and also heart palpitations! i have gone to a&e like 5 times now and everything is okay thank god
1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
I just saw this. I’ve been over to the ER twice now and they found nothing. Other than now stressing over a month my colon is inflamed. I’ve been bloated and gassy with a burning sensation on my right side for a month now. I’ve had ultrasounds ct scans and blood work and all Dr say I’m healthy all around. No explanation until I just watch this. Could this be it???
Day before yesterday I was felling like shit cant really tell but my body system wasent okay hving headache stomach upset eating a lot and my wife is complaining she’s not felling okay. I told her to visit the doctor. which she did the result came out positive expecting our second child. Will it always be like this when ever she get pregnant?
For about a couple weeks now I have had sore breasts they’ve gotten bigger I felt nauseous I’ve had very vivid dreams of me being pregnant or me taking a positive pregnancy test I’ve also been extremely tired I’ve actually started eating more my stomach seems to feel Fuller even though I eat very little I’m constantly just wanting to lay in bed I am very moody also seems hard for me to catch my breath I’ve had lower back pain my legs seem to hurt a lot quicker than they used to and I just have like almost this feeling of just being pregnant but I have taking a pregnancy test and it’s come back negative is there a chance that I’m still possibly pregnant?
I can’t find anything about my particular situation online, so I’ll ask here. When I was active duty, my last duty station was shore duty (meaning you don’t deploy). These are typically places where women decide to start a family. I’m a gay man, so naturally, I had many female friends, several of them pregnant. While I obviously wasn’t the father, I experienced Couvade Syndrome, including weight gain, back pain, increase in appetite, crazy emotional changes, etc. Is it possible for someone who is NOT the father to go through this as well? Because to this day, I cannot explain how that happened. All I know is that once I left that duty station, my body returned to the state it was when I arrived. The weight vanished, the pain disappeared, and I stopped sobbing while eating everything in sight.
I’ve been lucky, I have actually lost weight and gained more muscle. I have noticed a significant change in my mood/behavior/habits however. There is this strange, almost primitive change that once pointed out to me, I began to notice. I’ve become far more protective of not just her, but our home in general. I use to rarely lock doors, now I lock all the doors at night – along with locking windows, etc. (Amongst many other things) When I’m in public with her, there is this subconscious drive to constantly ‘shield’ her…this is difficult to explain or even summarize. It all just feels very ‘pre-programmed’ into my genetics. I will add that my diet has been complete garbage (massive sweets craving) since month 4ish and I’ve had reoccurring severe nausea randomly – that would last for days sometimes. Other than that, I guess I’ve been lucky. The biggest thing I’m struggling with however, is the overwhelming sense of doubt and worry about everything required to properly raise a child (in my case, twins). I constantly rack my mind thinking about everything from the smallest of things, to large life choices that are many many many years down the line for them. Along with an insatiable urge to pre-plan to an insane amount. Meanwhile, mom is much more focused on the ‘now’ and they’re overall health.
This is my 3rd pregnancy, my husband has been having very painful boils on his face. Especially immediately after he hurt my feelings badly. It has been one boil to another. Twice on his lips ( upper and lower lip), eye, in-between his nose, another one just came out again. Could this really be linked to d pregnancy? Coz I’ve heard of people getting boils when someone close 2tgem is pregnant
My girlfriend is first trimester 7/8 weeks and we actually found out she was pregnant due to me experiencing morning sickness and extreme nausea 😰 as it has progressedy anxiety and depression has gotten really intense is there anybody else that has experienced a lot stronger and frequent panick attacks ??
Yup we make the baby we decide wat the baby is n we go through the symptoms my wife would bitch at me look wat u did to me lol I’d be like yup I did all hail the baby maker lol except the morning sickness cravings n weight gain n mood swings I couldn’t even eat my favorite food no more instead my unborn did the wife hated it n with morning sickness lol she puked in the sink I puked in the toilet lol

So, I’m loving this article because I see more of your personalities than I’ve ever seen since subscribing to your website. I’ve always had this perception that Sarah was unusually happy and annoyingly perky but then the “sista” in her came out when she was upset with Justin’s driving, she pulled her draws (southern US term for panties) from her bum getting out the car and I know you were secretly picking your nose when the visor was down!!!! Just kidding with you. lol 🤪THEN….Justin started trippin about the ticket. OMG- he was talking about that thing for a minute. He made a “brotha” move by saying, I’m not paying for that, they’ll never find this car. You’ll be driving from here on out. 🤣 I actually like seeing you guys in this light. Also, I love how Justin is so involved. You give me hope there are still good men out there (with no outside babies). Hey, I think my comment is as long as the article so I’ll call it quits- lol. That was a joke… Thanks for sharing your lives and the cannibal boob baby with the world. Love you guys! 💗
Hi beautiful people. I like so much that Jystin is experiencing some of the symptoms to, lol! 24 years ago my husband was so rekaxwhen I get pregnant and he was like “it’s so weird that you don’t have any cravings” and out if nowhere he started to have cravings for mangoes and thinks that none of us eat. The same happened to my poor brother in. He get nausea, dizziness and cravings. It’s so cute because as I see it is like as husband and wife out conn9is so strong that I felt like we both were pregnant. He was the best labor & delivery coach any wife can ask for, but for my 2nd delivery he gets so nerdy that the only he did was laughing uncontrollably & for our 3rd he was amazing but almost pass out because I have big complications and I was supposed to have a c-section and the doctor didn’t realized (even that I told them that I can breath and push) & our daughter born seriously completely purple and with the umbilical cord suffocating her and they have to intubated to safe her and I have a huge hemorrhage and pass for 5 hours but when I wake up he was there by my side and took care of eveyhey did to the baby as we agree. Till now 20 years later I still very proud of him..Enjoy this journey. God bless the 3 of you. Love from this ajumma. 😉💜👌👍💙
I have 2 children. A year before the first, I dreamed I was in a small boat and I was with a boy 3 years old. Then with the second, a few months before I had her I was in the boat and she was about 5 and a girl. With both dreams I could see the way the child looked and knew sex before told. With the last dream you talked about. I think your having a girl. The dream before with the cannibal boys, it could be your fear of the child running your life in a way you don’t want. Just my thought on it. I had dreams too of worry how my life would get turned upside-down. I was so happy holding my first baby, the boy, in real life. You will too, for both of you, once your holding your baby.
Sorry guys but your argument with the ticket is pretty absurd. The ticket was expired. It doesnt matter if you bought the ticket 4x over – the time expired on it.. and your car was still there. Thats the conditions for every carpark ever. The overlap was your choice and is just how things go – its unreasonable for you to expect a parking system to take into account every outlying situation, especially when its only there to print tickets on an individual basis (ie it doesnt and simply cant take into account other tickets you yourself have bought). If you didnt want overlap, you should have waited until the ticket was closer to expiring and then renewed it. So I wouldnt go wasting your time making drama over it, or taking it to court. If you waste anything over an hour dealing with this issue youre wasting more money (money = time) than youre going to save – which I doubt youll even be able to do since youve got no ground to stand on. You should just accept the mistake that was made (on your part) and pay the $45 and be done with it.
Hi there and congratulations on your pregnancy!!! I’ve been following you for a few months and miss your life adventures before the baby updates started. Your excitement is understood and respected but some info shared seems a bit too intimate for me. Of course I can choose not to view and have not watched in a bit. Best wishes to you both!!
You guys have no common sense. It’s very simple. Your ticket expired, your car was there. You got a ticket for parking the car and not paying for it. Plain and simple. I don’t care how you want to spin it, you’re wrong. You should have came down and purchased more time before expiry but you chose not to. No excuse…
