Essentials For Learning Remotely?

Distance learning is a new approach to education that allows students to learn from the comfort of their homes, offices, or even at work. It requires clear explanations that build on prior knowledge, support in understanding and processing new information using both conceptual and metacognitive scaffolding, targeted individual feedback, support in managing independent learning, and an awareness of the importance of peer interaction. To effectively implement distance learning, higher education institutions must ensure the right technology tools are in place to best support student learning.

One of the most essential tools for virtual teaching is a portable document camera, whiteboard, organization of resources, laptop stand, visual timer, and webcam. Other essential supplies for distance learning include electronics, headphones, mouse, keyboard, literacy toolboxes, caddy to hold basic school supplies, dry erase board, volume control, and more.

Technology tools to improve the distance learning experience include learning management systems, collaboration tools, productivity, and ergonomic desk chairs. A cheap laptop, webcam, WiFi hotspot, desk with ample storage space, ergonomic desk chair, and adjustable laptop are also essential.

A list of distance-learning “must-haves” includes a mini tripod, mini ring light, ring light, laptop stand, and wireless mouse. These tools help ease the daily struggle of coordinating Zooms and ensuring effective communication and learning experiences. By incorporating these tools into the teaching process, higher education institutions can create a more engaging and effective learning environment for their students.

  • Tons of great tips!! When I am trying to keep on task and not turn a 30 minute assignment into a 4 hours slog, I use the Forest app. You set a timer to “plant a tree” and if you leave the app while the timer is going, your tree dies. Maybe some teenagers could benefit – they get to retain some autonomy if mom and dad aren’t taking away their phone, but they have a reason to stay off of it while doing work. Could also work as a virtual reward for young kids (if the parent doesn’t need their phone for a period of time): stay focused for thirty minutes and get a “tree.”
