The First Author Writing Curriculum is a comprehensive, classroom-tested writing curriculum designed for beginning writers. It provides daily instruction, assessment, standards-based IEP goals, classroom management, and accommodation strategies. The curriculum is designed to help special educators and paraprofessionals meet new state writing requirements and prepare students for alternate assessments. The curriculum includes tools and resources to facilitate improvement in teaching and learning through collegial observations and conversations.
First Author is a software tool that supports beginning writers, especially those with special needs, across all phases of the writing process. The curriculum includes a checklist for mini-lessons, independent writing time, and the Author’s Chair. The checklist can be used for pre/post assessments to demonstrate progress with First Author.
The curriculum is designed to guide educators in teaching beginning writing skills to students with special needs, including autism. The autoethnographical article “A Place to Belong” provides a guide for families interested in raising kids to celebrate their heritage, community, and the world.

What is the first author building wings?
The First Author curriculum is a comprehensive approach to teaching writing skills to students with diverse learning needs, including those with complex learning barriers. It is a unique and essential component of any special education reading curriculum.
How does first author work?
The lead author is responsible for ensuring the integrity of a project and ensuring all other authors meet the required criteria for authorship. They are typically the person who performed the central experiments and prepared the first draft of the manuscript. Co-authors must consider their role in the project and whether it merits attribution of authorship. They should review and approve the manuscript. External collaborators, including sponsors or industry representatives, should be included as authors irrespective of their institutional affiliations.
The use of “ghostwriters” is prohibited, and industry representatives or others retained by industry must be appropriately listed as contributors or authors, with their industry affiliation disclosed in the published article.
Does first author matter?
The first author position is a highly coveted position, with the last name mentioned in every future citation of a work, regardless of other authors’ names or referencing style. This position is remembered, indexed, and promoted more than any other. The first author executes a significant portion or majority of the work during the research process, indicating the researcher’s greatest intellectual contribution. First author credit offers substantial benefits, including valuable manuscripts for grant and position applications, staff appraisals, reviews, and career development.
Is first author or last author better?
The first author in a research paper should be the person who contributed most to the work, including writing the manuscript. The sequence of authors should be determined by the relative overall contributions to the manuscript. The senior author is often placed last, regardless of their contribution. The senior author may take responsibility for writing the paper, especially when the research student has not yet learned scientific writing skills. The senior author becomes the corresponding author.
Some supervisors put their students first, while others put their own names first. The decision should be based on the total time spent on the project by the student and the supervisor. A sensible policy is to give the student a fixed period of time to write the first draft, and if the student fails, the supervisor may write the paper and place their name first.
What are the first author writing measures?
The First Author™ Writing Measures are a set of tools designed to monitor the growth of beginning student writers. These include the Developmental Writing Scale, text type diversity, topic diversity, total intelligible words, and unique words.
What is the first author writing curriculum?
The First Author Writing Curriculum represents a systematic approach to teaching writing that integrates cognitive strategy instruction and social interaction training through extensive modeling and collaborative learning.
What is the first author technology?
Researchers have explored the use of software programs like First Author®, developed by Dr. Janet Sturm and distributed by Don Johnston Incorporated, to teach writing to children with ASD. The program guides students through the writing process, prompting them to choose a topic, select a picture prompt, and write with accommodations like word banks, word prediction, and auditory feedback. Preliminary analyses showed that students using First Author® improved writing quality, topic diversity, and new words compared to those using paper and pencil.
How many first authors are allowed?
The assertion that there is only one “first author,” or the name listed first, may not be the question that was intended to be posed. It is not the practice of academic conferences to impose a limit on the number of authors permitted on a given publication. Furthermore, the omission of any author’s name from the paper is regarded as a form of misrepresentation and unethical practice.
Is it better to be first author or last author?

What is the new book by Master Carpenter?
A 61-year-old carpenter has written “Building: A Carpenter’s Notes on Life and the Art of Good Work”, focusing on any work, not just his own. He believes that talent is not the main factor in success, but rather work, effort, practice, and a good teacher. He suggests taking a day off occasionally, but focusing on daily practice, having good guides, and staying committed to learning without error. This approach helps build a strong foundation for success in the construction industry.
What is the difference between principal author and first author?
The principal author is the individual who owns the project or has the most significant contribution, and may or may not be the first author. The corresponding author is the individual who interacts with the journal regarding publication.
📹 Home schooling for my son | Shantanu Gupta | TEDxXLRI
The theme for TEDxXLRI 2020 is ‘Instruments of Change’. Shantanu opens his talk by saying ‘No school for my son’. Shantanu is …
Homeschooling is an amazing option for kids but in India people are not much aware it or they don’t have time to teach their kids. I am doing Homeschooling of my 2 daughters and they both are intelligent, smart, social and physically fit. We need to aware people in India about Homeschooling or Unschooling. Thanks 🙏
Mr. Shantanu U r the BAAP of all parents who wants to homeschool their children…. Learned many things today abt home school… M too into same that my child will learn what he wants to learn and play and not a school a period a teacher a Curriculum will decide. What I suffered during my schooling my child will not….
Thank you so much sir…I am very confident now to raise my children by homeschooling and support their passion..I won’t waste their valuable time by sending schools only for sake of grades.and certificates..As you said their are so many other ways to get those certificates..and i don’t want to make job seeker, want to make entrepreneurs job creators..so don’t need those also…thank you so much …
I just did this for my son!! This was done so my son in the 9th grade could focus on his boxing aspiration and has more time to train. While doing his 10th and keeping the learning on. He will do his graduation but not the schooling route. Also, next year plan to take him to Thailand to train him in Muay Thai. Home schooling definitely is something parents should consider
Good to see Shantanu Ji, you said exactly what i thought and did; I also started homeshcool my 5.5 son Grade 1 this year and my 2nd son 3 year. The homeschooling is going great with fun leaning mixed with Indian US UK curriculum and my son can do more games, hobbies and is relaxed. I teach one subject a day or for two days, clubbed with activities, even youtube article and mobile games revolved around that theme, and my son himself says i want to do new work, its a games for him, which was never in school. And one-o-one teaching no one can beat 🙂 To parents afraid to take steps Certificate is no problem NIOS is all approved, else if kid is really good in studies go for IGSCE Cambridge Private.
Home schooling will work with a selective section of the society. Considering the socio-economic conditions generally in India, having home schooling will not be effective. The exposure Shantanu has given to his son is amazing, but how many families can do this. Both system has their cons and pros. Just can’t push aside the school system totally.
Sir, 200 % we agreed with you we frausted with private CBSC school in pune, changed 3 private school,We already leave school from last 3 years, and very happy in our life with our daughter . People doesn’t know how many opportunities government already giving free education in all over India ( NIOS ) best option for our kids in india, love it
Very True .I agree as a Teacher with an experience of 38 years.. . TRAVELLING IS BEST TEACHER AND school restrictbthe child in the four walls where students studies with stress and pain….now a days they font enjoy studies …not all but some definetely true….. I have also seen students learn more yaking them out gor exploration and ecperiential learning is must…….
I look back at my school days and in terms of learning it was practically a waste of time. The teacher would get up, go to the board and rattle out a lesson on a new topic usually without any passion crammed into 30mins (the other 30mins just wasted on getting in and out of class, settling the class down etc etc). So we get 30mins of a topic we have absolutely no clue about and then be given ‘homework’ to test us on the lesson. So we get home still wondering what the heck the teacher was on about and starting the learning process at home. But then we have 5 different subjects and 5 sets of homework from that day. Is it any wonder a child goes home and has less hours to learn about the foreign material presented to them than they have at school. So a child VERY quickly becomes despondent. He wasn’t TAUGHT anything but he was TOLD. What does he learn? Mostly nothing. Imagine Aristotle or Archimedes giving a lesson in this way. The time at school is 50% wasted. A child given the right tools can smash their way through a school syllabus in 50% of the time because they are forced to find the answers if they do not understand. In school, you switch off once you don’t follow what the teacher is saying and pray you can catch up by putting in the hours later at home. Its always a catchup after having wasted most of your waking hours at school.
I am going to be dad soon, i am having same thought process, I started researching about the new ways of upbringing, certainly it starts with braking sterotyiping and make the learning process enjoyable and natural. Theoretically this plan is superb until we as a partents gives enough time to kids, be around them… For joined families it’s manageable but I am wondering how will office going couples gonna live this dream.
Home schooling is good but I think you might want to have a concrete plan for him. Just hopping around will not be effective. For example, just traveling and visiting historical places will not take care of history. It will need finding age appropriate resources, doing research about the place and being able to explain it. Same goes for reading, it needs scientific approach and progresion. We did it, and by the age of 7, we could read Harry Potter series 8 times. Same goes for camping etc.
Hello sir, thanks for providing information very useful for the next generation. While going through your article one 12th class CBSE student (Physics Chen, Maths) wanted to follow the practice you explained for home schooling. What would you recommend at this stage, your early reply is highly solicited. As this may be at the cost of forthcoming CBSE board exam
After the implementation of CCE( continuous & comprehensive evaluation) in 2010 ……some school took this loafer attitude a step further when 70 percent of evaluation was conducted in the school itself… teacher were only focused on polishing their records by giving unnecessary copying tasks in the name of homework/assignments/ projects and the worst part is they justified these by labeling it ‘the proof of a student studying (an academic proof)’…they did not bother whether the pupil is learning or not ….It more or less felt like they won’t teach anything in school hour, and also they would not let you study at home, and heavens forbids they would take it on their small ego if they come to know that a child is taking any private tuitions or cram schools due to substandard teaching and syllabus….by unnecessarily detaining them.
Homeschooling your kids will develop better understanding of nature(like physics, maths, chemistry, astronomy, biology, practical farming field rather than learning only the definition and theory doing some science practical and much more beyond this) and society(like family gathering, visiting various places, learning from their parents how to respect elders because parents are their role model what parents are doing they will do in future.)
it’s not the parents’ job to educate a child, you have to find a guru for your child, If parents look after their child they will become Shishupal(शिशु को पालने वाला ) of mahabharat who was anti krishna. but i am glad that people have atleast started to think rationally, only thing which has be done is giving parents a right direction.
Send kids to good pre-primary schools. After that home schooling or online schooling will be fine as they learned basic etiquettes already. Is there any community of online schooling or home schooling? If there are local communities and if in cities especially, if they stay together insided a gated community, then no need of school. I am looking one like that in Bangalore.
Really very nice speech 👌👌 actually I m also planning for homeschooling to my kid who is now 1 and half year around. But still I have some doubt like in NIOS or Cambridge which standard exam need to do like directly he can pursue 10th exam or prior years too Plz give me the answer I am waiting for it. Thank you 😊
I am thinking of homeschooling my child too. I have been thinking about this since her birth now she is almost 3 but I am only worried what happens when she reaches the age of giving board exams and how would she get admission in colleges. If someone could explain I am definitely wanting to do this. Please
I am quite disagree may be And some stuff. your perspective on school adhere only. it’s not like that school does not only provide teaching like stuff more then that student interacted to new people with some slight differences in culture and learn as well.we can’t compare success with knowledge or with position just like a student who study could about cricket as well if he want to or singing may be important to him and vis a versa he get birth he have equal right to know about cricket or singing study as well may be he choose which one he should follow know about something will never end just you discover and explore A cricketer who get retired may be he want know about geography want to solve problem in maths I m just. Try to tell that it’s never end just need to start and follow the process explore as much as you can so that your hunger or knowledge always satisfy
*the base question here should be, as a avg middle class citizen of this country, who cannot afford e=year round trips, multiple club enrolments for their kids, whose parents are a liability to him and post retirement expects himself to be one for their child, hence intends to invest all his income into his child’s education, if this method leads to the child’s failed career, (a) what happens to the families future ? (b) is this my fault ?, that his and my (whatever life left) is ruined (c) what if he blames what happened to him was my causing, what rebuttal do i have, i saw a ted talk….and choose to pave a life away from the cushions and verified certainty, he could do something in life, cause institutionally schooled people do…. (d) How can i be sure i am the best teacher he could have gotten for every subject (mind you, many people’s lives changed for the better when a teacher taught beyond the subject, about life and decisions) (e) How can i be sure the social opportunities he should’ve gotten in a institute filled with kids, he’s getting in clubs i enroll him in……
