Bleaching A Denim Pattern?

Bleaching denim is a fun and customizable way to give jeans a unique look. To begin, wash the jeans and dry them thoroughly. Create a 50/50 bleach and water solution, then paint it on the jeans in your desired pattern. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until lightened. Rinse thoroughly in vinegar water to neutralize.

To create patterns with bleach, use stencils or apply bleach to specific designs. You can use stickers, tape, or create your own stencils. To prepare the jeans for bleaching, clean the area around your worktable to avoid getting bleach on carpeting or wood floors. Make a 50/50 bleach and water solution, then paint it on the jeans in your desired pattern. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until lightened. Rinse thoroughly in vinegar.

To stencil bleached jeans, add regular household bleach (full strength) to a spray mist bottle. Use low splash bleach (gel base) as it has an acrylic paint feel and does not bleed into the fabric like water-based dilute bleach. Lightly dip a dish sponge into the bleach and dab lightly and carefully through the stencil. Test the design by drawing it with chalk to guide the bleach pen. In a spray bottle with 100 Bleach, spray the bleach directly onto the jeans until they are wet. Leave the bleach on for as long as you like, usually 1 hour.

Bleaching jeans can be a stylish and personalized wardrobe upgrade, making them perfect for any season. To create unique patterns, use stencils, stickers, tape, or create your own stencils.

  • Cute! I have that Dixie Belle stencil. Used it in my bathroom on the sliding wooden door. It’s a gorgous stencil. I plan to make some tote/shopping bags out of recycled denim and such and was envisioning using that stencil again for some subtle design. Your bleach idea is great. Is it 100% bleach in that bottle?

  • Like a rippling pond in the summer. Beautiful! What about drawing the lines with washable glue if you want a sharper line? I think that ‘gel’ non-splash bleach would be better for me because i get messy! But thanks for the tip about it not soaking in as fast. I would not have known that. And thanks Sheila! Great inspiration!
