Does A Razor Blade Get Sharper In Denim Jeans?

A Blade and Badger forum discusses the idea of sharpening a razor on jeans, which is a popular method among shaving enthusiasts. The technique involves running the razor up and down denim jeans, avoiding worn-out or soft denim. Instead, opt for a pair with a tight weave and slightly rough texture.

A clean, dry razor blade can be obtained by gathering an old pair of jeans for sharpening. This action is neither stropping nor sharpening, but rather applying baby oil to both sides of the blade. Before and after shaving, take a pair of jeans and swipe the razor with pressure against the denim 20 times in an upward fashion. Sharpening disposable razor blades on old jeans is a simple and sustainable way to save money, reduce waste, and enjoy smoother shaves.

The process of stropping the razor along the jeans is called stropping, which removes burrs and irregularities from the blades, honing the razor’s edge. While this method may not be as effective as stropping disposable razors, it may help align some metal bits and sharp edges together. Baby oil or mineral oil is typically used to repel water from the blades.

Using jeans to sharpen the blades is not recommended, as access to both sides of the blade(s) is required for stropping. However, a pair of jeans or a piece of denim should also serve as a safety razor stropper in case you don’t have anything else around. The denim removes hair and small particles of dirt, sharpening the blades, allowing you to keep using your razors. The method is simple, requiring only gentle pushing along a pair of jeans, prolonging its life and preventing the need for purchasing another razor.

  • I’ve been using the same Mach 3 blade for over 6 months and it still gives a great shave. I do 20 passes after each use. It’s important to do it right after shaving because this also removes the water, which can cause corrosion. Others have suggested dipping in alcohol but I think several passes over the denim removes any moisture from the blades.

  • I read an article that taught this trip, like 4 months ago. I’ve been using the same razor for 4 months now. I just do this every other shave. The article suggested doing this 20 times UP the pant leg ( ankle to knee), and then 20 times down (knee to ankle)… Always the opposite of the direction you’d shave. It works great

  • Thanks Marc. I’ve also found on certain 5 blade razors, you have to be careful, because the little plastic pins that hold the cartridge are, easy to break. They are so tiny and weak. I use olive oil to stop corrosion and have had the razors last around 6 weeks. They would have lasted longer if they hadn’t have broke. I’ll have to try the rubbing alcohol and see how it works vs. olive oil. Thanks for the input!

  • I do mine on a dry towel after i shave, moisture is the real culprit of the blades. I have disposal mach 3’s that just won’t wear out and I’m shaving on 5 day old beards at times. Also move the blade over different parts of the jeans or towel to not press down the fibers so much. It does work and saves money, although it only seems to work on quality blades and not dollar store type of razors. I’ve tried it.
