📹 How Clothes Impact Your Life: Re-examining Fashion | Jennifer Millspaugh | TEDxTexasStateUniversity
We all wear clothes, but does what we wear matter? In this sentimentally provocative and entertaining talk, Dr. Jennifer Millspaugh …
Why do people care so much about trends?
Trends are general directions that change and develop in fashion, lifestyle, and experiences, appealing to people who want to fit in with society and foster a sense of community. Scientists explain this phenomenon as The Bandwagon Effect, where people do something primarily because others are doing it, regardless of their own beliefs. This creates a herd mentality, providing a safety net of others with similar values in materialistic purchases and accessories.
The bandwagon effect and need for human acceptance are biological functions that are unavoidable. People are biologically programmed to be social and like to be part of a group, and being in the same way can lead to belonging and acceptance. Our need to belong is not mentally constructed, but is already programmed into us. Trends are a way to enforce this feeling and satisfy our craving for acceptance. As social creatures, we search for ways to agree with one another and identify with one another by adopting the behavior of those around us, including consumer mannerisms and shopping habits.
What customers want in fashion?
Consumers are increasingly demanding greater diversity and inclusivity in the fashion industry, particularly in terms of advertising models and clothing sizes. Brands must cater to a diverse range of body types, sizes, and skin tones to avoid backlash from customers who feel excluded. A study by GWI shows that over a third of UK consumers are inclined to purchase from a brand when they see someone of their body type featured in an advertisement.
57 of women believe that fashion retailers are improving their efforts to cater to diverse body sizes, and 42 agree that brands are making strides towards promoting inclusivity in terms of body image.
Why do people want to follow fashion trends?
The human desire for a sense of community and connection can be fulfilled with relative ease through the use of trends, which offer a convenient means of achieving this without undue risk. However, the formation of profound connections is more challenging due to the inherent vulnerability associated with such relationships. Weller posits that surface-level connections may prove unsatisfying, as empirical evidence indicates that the majority of individuals continue to grapple with feelings of loneliness, underscoring the necessity for more profound forms of connection.
What type of clothing sells the most?
The popularity of specific items of clothing may fluctuate in accordance with seasonal trends, regional preferences, and prevailing fashion trends. It is observed that basic items such as white T-shirts, jeans, and black dresses tend to be best-sellers due to their versatility, ease of matching, and prevalence in wardrobes.
Do fashion trends matter?
Fashion trends are a constant source of change in ideas and attitudes towards how we dress, as we strive to differentiate ourselves from others through fashion. However, fashion editor Harling Ross and Man Repeller founder Leandra Medine argue that trends are not necessarily good or bad but rather information that provides structure to fashion. They argue that humans have sought this structure since time began, with the first form of decoration being embellishing the body to indicate status and tribe.
Why do people only follow trends?
People follow new trends for various reasons, including social pressure, the need to belong, novelty, media influence, and prestige. However, it’s crucial to remember that trends are often short-lived and can be out of date. It’s essential to preserve individuality and authenticity, as following every trend can lead to losing one’s identity. By constantly adapting to fit the current trends, we risk losing ourselves and forgetting what truly makes us who we are. It’s essential to stay true to oneself and not let external influences take away from who we truly are.
Is it OK not to follow fashion trends?
While it’s acceptable to occasionally follow a trend that resonates with us and offers personal value, it’s crucial to make these decisions consciously and not blindly follow every new hype. In a world dominated by trends, it’s essential to maintain individuality and authenticity to lead a fulfilling life that aligns with our values and interests. Be brave, authentic, and don’t blindly follow every trend that comes your way.
Do fashion designers follow trends?
Fashion designers frequently utilize observations of street movements and subculture trends as a means of anticipating emerging trends, employing these observations as a foundation for the creation of novel designs. Additionally, they consider global developments to be a significant factor in predicting future trends.
How important is fashion trend?
Trends represent a vital conduit between fashion brands and their clientele. It is therefore imperative for manufacturers to remain apprised of the latest trends in order to comprehend consumer preferences and adapt to evolving market demands.
How do trends affect the fashion industry?
The influence of social media on fashion businesses is considerable. It shapes consumer preferences, drives brand visibility, and enables direct customer engagement, which often results in increased sales. The concept of sustainability has emerged as a pivotal consideration in the realm of global fashion trends, as consumers have demonstrated a growing inclination towards the adoption of eco-friendly products, thereby compelling businesses to align their practices with sustainable principles.
What do consumers look for in clothing?
The report highlights the importance of size and fit when shopping for clothing, with 92 consumers considering this when making a purchase. Comfort is also a top consideration, with 86 valuing overall quality. Nearly 74% of consumers want to see a product in real life. The report also discusses the combined spending on clothing and footwear, focusing on clothing items and factors influencing purchase decisions. Many of these factors are difficult to access online, so many shoppers seek out user-generated content (UGC) to learn about other customers’ experiences with the product.

“Fashion singnifies where we are from, our culture, our norms, our belonging to common ideals, while at the same time showcasing our individuallity, our diversity and our aspiraations; fashion is one component of our freedom, of individual identity, our capacity for creativity, and our path to self actualization.” This is beautiful.
A cycle of obsessive entrepreneurs who ceaselessly produce, promote, and sell trends at the expense of nature, wildlife, human labor, and human dignity and by the beginning of the next “season”, they stand in a safe corner and “intellectually” critisize their very own industry. This is the tragedy of the second most polluting industry in this world. Period.
At 9:43, she said “inccasions”!😂 Sorry, had to get that out of the way! All kidding aside, Ms. Jennifer Millspaugh is a bright, beautiful young lady(with legs for days) and I respect and resignate with her perspective on looking at “Fashion”👔👞👗👠 as a metaphor for our personal identity! People don’t like to admit it, but were judged on our appearance! It tells the outside World 🌎 who were are or who we are aspiring to be!👍
We use fashion not only the consumption of it,but also the creation of it to express who we are and the way we want to live. Fashion is not a static element, who we are is not a static element, these things change and evolve over time . Somethings will remain constant but other will move. In this way you can pin point the changes in your own life by the changes thro your closet. Things that have stuck with me over the years, things that I have let go,and new things that brings me joy when I discovered them. The democratisation by fashion means that we now have the power to Express who we are and the way we want to live. The importance and diversity of expressing ourselves thro our clothes and what we wear will and only increase, because fashion is taking a new phase with our cultures, ideals while the same time showcasing our individuality, our diversity and our aspirations . Fashion is one component of our freedom,of individual identity, our capacity, creativity, and our past.
If consumers really really want sustainability, they have to pay more money. The brands need to pay suppliers enough money to make sustainable products. The reality is that brands request “Make Sustainable Item. Use Less Water, Chemical, and Materials”. “Did you make it happen? Now will pay you less money because you will spend less money”. What an ironic and silly reality is that? We all are not desperate enough and not ready to live with true sustainability yet.
So basically you’re trying to ponder the same issues that Gandhi spoke very clearly on. He promoted people learning how to do their own Manufacturing the idea was to find self employment But more then that to find their pride in their own work and to learn the value of others such as those who make fine clothing.
Oh God you can get a PhD in fashion???? And yes Jennifer Millspaugh’s outfit is not practical at all for an active person or any person in an office environment (your office chair would roll over that random piece of fabric hanging down there and snag on everything). Fashion is a horrible polluter, an incredible waste, and we don’t need a small group of people in the world telling other people what to wear. Talk to me about fashion when you make attractive, comfortable and practical garments out of recycled/discarded clothing that may even have been rags, that people love and want to wear, and is in the reason of everyone’s wallet. Then I will be impressed.
Inspiring speech, great insights and an awesome outfit :). I see on your LinkedIn profile that you are “an entrepreneurial researcher, studying how new business models and enterprise functions are created, built and adopted as innovation”. Did you ever research how new, innovative, sustainable brands with new sustainable models never manage to get funding to even get a chance to be born? Being from the industry I know of many of them…
How embarrassing this topic is… did ted talk actually become bullies or a way to expose cringing bullshitters. Technically fashioin is what you bloody make of it, main train of thought is to make sure to have some sense of decency in your appearances… if people start to laugh at you on the street well then you have only yourself to blame!
The only problem with celebrities wearing your products is if they don’t tag you or say your brand basically they just put your product or idea out there to be knocked off by bigger brands who will promote it better and bigger! My buddy had items on Lebron, Swizz, Carmelo Anthony but no one wanted to tag the brand so other big companies just knocked him off.

I want to make a clothing brand this year and I need a partner abroad. I have a small garment in my city the last two years but I only make clothes for other people and I think I have enough experience to start a clothing brand but I want to market it across the country because I think brands that come from abroad have a greater chance rather than a local brand. if anyone wants to ask questions or make a friends with me, I will gladly accept. thank you so much.

Celebrities want $$$$$$ …. how do you do it without thousands of dollars of influencers marketing? … the question you should answer is how to get customers without thousands on digital ads or influencers…with money is not that hard if you have good fundamentals, which is pretty much the basics of any B2C business today….
what about just sending your clothing design ideas to someone / some place? how can i do this? There are many brands that “Get away” from doing this, for example, the “george” brand from walmart, at least, there wasn’t a way to contact the brand / company from what i was told, and this is how i want my brand to be like. It will be niche, but i don’t care, as i am mainly doing it for myself, because i can’t find clothing i like, i’m just looking to get some compensation for having the clothes sell, but at the same time, use the clothing myself. Also, i would like to avoid social media routes if possible, like perhaps contacting a company directly and just sending my ideas to them.
