Are Cheat Days Allowed For Vegetarians?

Rachel Beller, author of Eat to Lose, Eat to Win, emphasizes the importance of being mindful of what you eat during cheat dieting. Mindful eating involves paying attention to your body’s hunger cues and eating when you’re hungry but stopping when you’re full or satisfied. There is evidence to suggest that cheat days may increase metabolism in the short term, but there is no rigorous scientific research to support this. Nutritionist Fiona Hunter states that there is no rigorous scientific research to support the idea that cheat days are good for metablism.

A cheat day is an entire day of going overboard on empty-calorie foods that you normally wouldn’t eat as part of a healthy diet plan. However, nutrition pros say that cheat meals can be healthy if done right. After three to four weeks of an intensive weight-loss plan, it’s usually recommended to introduce a food vacay. Most vegetarians usually have enough protein and calcium found in dairy products in their diet, but if you don’t plan your diet properly, you could miss out on essential nutrients.

It’s normal to cheat on any diet, but the vegan diet comes with more at stake than your health when you slip up if you are an ethical vegan. A TikTok user from Toronto shared a viral clip claiming all vegetarians occasionally cheat with some meat, and some in the community confirmed this. A Paleo Vegetarian diet does allow for these foods, so you may need to make modifications to either your weekly diet or your cheat day.

Vanchet day has been redefined within the vegan community, introducing the concept of vegan cheat day into dietary conversations.

Do vegetarians age slower?

A study published in BMC Medicine found that those who followed a plant-based diet had a lower biological age, weight loss, and lower levels of “bad” cholesterol. The research followed 21 pairs of identical twins for 8 weeks, providing one with vegan meals made mostly of vegetables, legumes, and fruit, and the other with meals that included meat and dairy products. The results showed that those who followed the plant-based plan had a lower biological age, weight loss, and lower levels of LDL, or “bad” cholesterol.

This study is part of Stanford University’s larger Twin Nutrition Study, which was documented in a Netflix series called “You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment”. The findings suggest that a plant-based diet may be a potential solution to slowing the body’s aging process on a molecular level.

Can vegans have a cheat day?

Those who adhere to a vegan diet, are homeless, have low incomes, or are members of the working class may choose to consume dairy or egg-based foods at no cost as a means of avoiding food waste or hunger. In some cases, this may be the only meal they have access to on a given day.

Do vegetarians lose weight faster than meat eaters?

Vegetarianism has been shown to help people lose weight, with a 2016 meta-analysis of human clinical trials showing significant improvements in weight loss compared to meat-based diets. This may be due to higher fiber content and lower calorie content in some vegetarian diets. However, some vegetarian diets can still contain processed carbohydrates and calories that can hinder weight loss. Vegetarianism also has health benefits, particularly for heart health, with a lower risk of heart disease, certain types of cancer, diabetes, and other ailments.

Many people experience reduced blood pressure and cholesterol when they cut out meat from their diet. However, not all vegetarian diets are healthy or suitable for everyone, as some include unhealthy foods that some vegetarians may consume liberally.

How many days a week should I be vegetarian?

Adherence to a vegetarian diet can confer benefits to those who consume it 1-2 times per week. Such a diet may help reduce saturated fats and cholesterol, increase the intake of fruits and vegetables, and may even lead to increased adherence.

Will 2 cheat days ruin your diet?

Consuming alcohol, sugar, and processed foods can damage gut bacteria, leading to damage even over a short period. Animal studies show that even a few days of junk food can be just as harmful as regular junk food. Unhealthy food choices can cause inflammation, which can flare up quickly and burden hormones and liver. Additionally, sugar can cause a sugar crash and addictive cravings, making it difficult to maintain a healthy diet. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid these unhealthy food choices to prevent long-term health issues.

Are cheat days allowed on Carnivore?

Are cheat days allowed on Carnivore?

Cheat days on the carnivore diet can vary in frequency, with some opting for a monthly or a few months’ cheat day. It’s important to find a balance that allows you to enjoy the benefits without feeling overly restricted. More frequent cheat days may interfere with your body’s adaptation to the carnivore diet.

The time it takes to re-enter ketosis after a cheat day can vary significantly, depending on factors like metabolism, activity level, and food consumption. To expedite the process, consider fasting or high-intensity exercise.

While some diets use strategic “refeeds” to boost metabolism, the evidence for this on a carnivore diet is largely anecdotal. Some people report that an occasional increase in calories or carbohydrates can help jumpstart weight loss, possibly by affecting hormones like leptin. However, this isn’t guaranteed and could potentially hinder progress for others. It’s essential to monitor your response to cheat days.

Is it OK to have cheat days on a diet?

Is it OK to have cheat days on a diet?

Cheating too frequently can lead to binge-eating and can be detrimental to overall health. Nutritionists recommend the 80/20 Rule, which suggests that 80 percent of meals should be healthy and adhere to a diet plan, while the remaining 20 percent can be used to satisfy cravings. Instead of committing to an entire day of indulgences, it is recommended to satisfy a single craving. The frequency of cheating should be based on one’s health goals, with those trying to maintain weight having more flexibility.

If consuming a large amount of calories, it is best to do so on a training day, with a protein-rich meal to rebuild muscle mass and satisfy
hunger. This approach helps maintain a healthy lifestyle and prevents binge-eating.

Will one cheat day ruin my progress?

Cheat day meals are acceptable as long as they don’t cause significant harm to one’s health. The body can regulate itself after a cheat meal, with symptoms such as bloating, decreased activity, and temporary water weight increase. Cheating on diets is inevitable from a psychological, sustainability, and practical standpoint, as humans are not robots and should strive for consistency rather than sporadically perfectness. Sharing special moments with others is essential for building a maintainable healthy lifestyle and embracing the human experience.

Is a 100% vegan diet healthy?

A vegan diet provides essential nutrients like calcium, iron, vitamin B12, iodine, and selenium, which are crucial for a healthy body. However, proper planning is essential to avoid missing out on essential nutrients. Vegans who are pregnant or breastfeeding should ensure they receive enough vitamins and minerals for their child’s health development. Is going vegan the fastest way to lose weight?

Plant-based diets may have a slight edge for weight loss, with studies showing that those following a plant-based diet lost around 3 pounds more than non-vegetarians. However, this effect was only noticeable in non-adherent individuals, suggesting that plant-based diets may cause ad libitum calorie restriction due to their nature. Plant-based diets are practiced by 5-10 of people in the Western World and have become popular tools for weight loss. Nutrition science has helped understand the effectiveness of plant-based diets, their comparison to other diets, and their potential work for weight loss.

What is Joe Rogan’s carnivore diet?

Joe Rogan, a renowned vegan, adheres to the Carnivore Diet, which primarily consists of meat, including game meats like elk and bison, as well as traditional meats like beef. He also incorporates organ meats, particularly liver, and occasionally incorporates eggs. While the Carnivore Diet has been shown to improve energy, mental clarity, and weight loss, long-term scientific studies on its effectiveness are limited. It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional before starting the diet, as individual experiences can vary. Bananas are not included in the diet, as it focuses solely on animal products.

  • Thank you for saying you don’t like the term “cheat day” I’m glad I’m not the only one bothered by it! It seems so negative, like you should feel guilty for eating things you want. I’m sick of vegan social media bloggers’ “what I eat in a day” being kale salads and quinoa. It seems so pretentious! While I eat healthy 90% of the time, if I want a brownie or impossible burger, I’m going to eat it. Veganism is not a diet after all 🙂 thank you for this, LOVE your website!!!

  • Hi Rose, just a suggestion for future articles ideas. It doesn’t have to be food related all the time. I think a lot of us would like to know how you get your hair so vibrant with the manic panic you use. I’ve never done my hair at home and when I tried getting a lighter color or brighter it took months to achieve and $$$$$$$$ to have it feel like hay. Would love to see your process and review on the product. I would love vibrant hair!

  • That gardein Mandarin chikn is so flipping good. I usually get 2 packages for me and my s.o. and make it with Jasmine rice and stir fried veggies! And the gardein tenders are good too, I also make them in to mock buffalo wings with Frank’s red hot and some earth balance and a squeeze of lemon in a bowl mixed to get her and toss the tenders in it then plate with carrot and celery sticks and just ranch and a side salad.

  • I have “craving” days…when I can almost taste a specific dish…like salty oven fries or really creamy mac-and-cheeze…and I’ll make those foods, enough to satisfy that Craving. I don’t consider it “cheating” since that’s a negative point of view, and who am i cheating on? Myself? LOL….I understand the Noodle Lust, too…I have an entire pantry shelf for just noodles/pasta and that is my Playground, for real. Loved this article!

  • Rose! What a champ lol. That samyang ramen is only good when you cook it like 3 mins and take it off the stovetop when it still looks a little hard. It’s good that way. My fave also is the nongshim veggie one. Have you tried the Gusta brand vegan Shwarma??? It looks like a fat sausage and you just cut some random slices and put it in your ramen it is SO good!!! Try it, especially if you only eat one ramen then add some rice with it. To be honest I’m surprised you even weigh 130! You look TINY!! Mind you I don’t remember when I weighed that little lol. Oh and the Paldo jajangmyun package with the chef and his hat on the top corner is the BEST vegan jajangmyun. Try it!

  • Awesome article ! It’s so impressive how much we are ready to eat spontaneously. I’ve got a question. I’ve been a vegetarian for three months, I stopped dairy and eggs (it’s still hard with cheese but I Will do it). This evening I use my favorite industrial sauce because I really felt lazy. But after finishing my meal, I discovered that there was “beef extract” in the sauce, while it’s supposed to be a mushroom sauce. Now I feel really guilty and I’m kind of disgusted of myself. Does anyone have some advices for me ?

  • So i don’t know if you addressed this near the end of your article but I wanted to comment this after perusal the breakfast part . While eating excessive calories does make you gain weight gradually, the weight gain after breakfast is not actual bodyweight it’s food weight since you did eat a larger portion and until it’s digested and passed it’ll be that way. Same if you are retaining fluid or even constipated . I struggle with gastroparesis (extremely slow digestion) and IBSC so I get constantly discouraged if I see my weight shoot up 7 pounds in a day or anything crazy like that but my doctors always explain that because I don’t digest and retain water the food left in my stomach contributes to the total weight of my body including my literal fat and muscle weight. I know you probably already know that 😂 but I think it’s important to note that if you do overeat and your scale shows a lot of weight gain that night or the next day it’s not the end of the world because it’ll even out once you digest and go back to normal eating c:

  • im one of those who belong to to the savorysweet teaaaaam. i need to eat savory after sweet, then savory again lol issa cycle. 💕 i loveeee both. my tongue ieasily gets bored. it always wants to taste something else. thus when i eat i need to have side dishes or another drink aside from water and then dessert then another savory snack lol or something cold after something warm. or both.

  • you didn’t gain that much…i have gone up 10 lbs after a day of normal eating (i’m referring to an evening weigh-in)..i am usually at least 6-7 lbs heavier in the evening than i am in the morning. 6 lbs is figuratively “nothing”…given that cheat day. glad that you didn’t try a 10k challenge or something…still seemed like u were listening to your body intuitively on some level! the muffin looked yumm

  • super glad you made this article, I’m sure a lot of us weren’t aware that the number on the scale after overeating, is just temporary, and it’s really nothing to panic over. Heck just a few days ago I ate over my usual limit (all junk foods) for two days, and a few days after regular eating, I’m back to my normal weight. Although that number shooting up, is really scary to see esp if you worked hard to maintain for so long😱

  • “I don’t know if I should be proud or disgusted. Probably both” ahahah. You’re too funny. I really like the fact that you show that a meal is a meal and that you should no be obsessed with calories and weight. Two days after, everything was “normal” again. But also that eating junk food is tiring as much as satisfying. Great advices, inspirational article. Thank you for sharing.

  • What an amazing cheat day! Love how you didn’t eat like those food competitors and go overboard with stuffing your face. Honestly, I find that the more balanced I eat throughout the day, the less I overeat of them. The vegan chocolate chip muffin, Gardein chicken, steamed dumplings, and Coconut Bliss ice cream dark chocolate stick looked absolutely delicious—I LOVE the mandarin chicken too! For any treat day or “cheat day” if you will call it that, I’d enjoy all the peanut butter, vegan carrot cake, granola, and chocolate green smoothies in the world. But treat yourself in reasonable portions more frequently to not feel sick! 😋🤘😜

  • Dude… so much junk!! Glad u enjoyed it (as did i!) but i am also glad i filmed not feeling super great bc that is really how junk food makes us fell… like junk! So i totally want to try ketchup chips now but i looked online and couldn’t find any in Florida (let alone the us) lol… I’ll have to keep my eyes open!

  • Love you rose 🌹! It amazes me that your such a tiny little thing and can get that much food in you in 1 day! My nutritionist said there are studies showing that you don’t have to portion your food if your vegan. Almost impossible to gain weight BUT.. that’s only if your not eating junk… my head was swirling with the sodium count alone 😂😂😂

  • That was so interesting, I learned a lot! Thanks for taking one for the vegan team! It shows that it is possible to eat vegan and still gain weight because you are making the wrong food choices. Just going vegan is not enough. The weight gain and weight loss were fascinating! You da best! Lots of love from Ontario.

  • you are correct: vegan does not equal healthy. saveg cafe cookbook after the asian cookbook. how about a article of one of your meetings, sort of an inside look. i find it hard to believe that a petire woman like you ate more than 5,000 calories in a day, not that i suspect you were lying, just hard to believe that you were able to eat so much. you’re my saveg idol.

  • You know what? I LOVE this article. This girl ate over 5,000 calories (and it wasn’t all raw fruits and veggies or any of that stupid crap) and in under a week was back to normal. This is such a stupid stigma and fear around cheat days and the number on the scale and over-eating and calories and just…. It really doesn’t matter. a cheat day does not change you. You want to know how this diet will make you gain weight? True, real weight? Actual pounds of fat? By eating this way, or even eating more, every day for years. so yeah, eat your treats, have your special treat days. It will not change you, and you’ll get to enjoy some great food while you do it. do By the way, sorry if you see any awkward typos in this comment. My device has really stupid and weird autocorrect and it’s hard for me to catch all the mistakes.

  • I enjoyed seeing how a big eating day can affect weight so drastically. The day after an unhealthy day, my weight shoots up, and I feel terrible. But perusal you track throughout the day helps me realize that a lot of the weight is just pure food matter, and it’s nothing to get super upset about. Let’s not be critical of someone collecting empirical data, ya’ll. So sick of people getting their panties in a twist over the use of a scale :/

  • Not loving the thumbnail with the “fake fat face”, it’s actually pretty offensive. Imagine a white Youtuber doing a “only eating asian food for a week” article with a thumbnail where they pull on the corner of their eyes (you know, the way racist people do) to “look asian lol”. I would find that offensive, and to be honest I’m a bit surprised you went there with the fat “joke”. Not hating, just commenting as I usually find you more relatable and much more likeable than most antifat/weight obsessed vegan Youtubers. It’s not the end of the world and you’re not a terrible person, but still, a bit disappointed (I’m not used to having such negative reactions to your articles, this is so weird!)

  • Bro!!! after perusal your content for the last 2 hours you have really inspired me with all your positive energy and different recipies. There is so much life in what you eat and ive been getting continuously from my family, that i need to eat meat and if i dont, where are you getting your protein from?, so your info is really amazing and after just finishing a 72 hour full moon water fast im going to become a a vegan and be plant based. I speak about being one with nature one with the universe and it just makes sense and aligns with my life. Thank you for your work and i look forward to learning more from you. Peace!!!

  • By the way, I love following people like you. I am sitting at desk in my office in Florida. I love being with you on your journey to this place. Thank you of posting it. When I say sugar, I mean anything like honey, maple syrup, etc. Not any fruit sugars. I am like you. I add dates to my green smoothies. I am 64. I have been keeping away from Meat and Dairy for a long time. I so admire you both. There are many couples like you on youtube and I so envy all of you. I wish I could have lived my life setting up a website and meeting someone who had the same likes and life style as myself. Hopefully, I am inspiring people around me!! My mom is 90 and I have her eating healthy. No meat and dairy!! Be well. Sheila

  • I have two remarks regarding your car. First one is that I recently noticed that you are driving a 350Z?! 😱😱😱 That’s like my favourite car how awesomeeee 😍😍😍. Second one is that it looks like the steering wheel is on the right. I remember your struggle with the wheel on the right from your UK vlogs. But it seems your own car has the wheel on the right? 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️ Were you just messing with us during the UK vlogs? You did a very good job fooling me if you did whahaha. Love from The Netherlands! 💕🌱 P.S.: We drive on the RIGHT side of the road.

  • Hey, don’t shame yourself or make excuses for why you eat something you enjoy (as long as it’s vegan of course). We don’t need to hate ourselves or our bodies. Eat any amount of treats you want. There’s nothing wrong with that. Of course, it might not be the healthiest thing in the world to do, but still. Be careful to describe yourselves as for example “gluttons” because you eat a few treats. For someone struggling to eat healthy for whatever reason, that could be really harmful. If you want to eat 2 or 3 or 5 of something, why not? You won’t die, I promise you. 🙂 I just think we’re programmed to mini-hate ourselves when we eat something sweet or something. Or when we don’t work out. Or anything else you’ve told yourself to do. Don’t do that. Love yourself. Peace.

  • Hi Derek, i love perusal your articles and have been for a few weeks now. I wondered what sort of nutrition course you studied? If it was a general nutrition course or a plant based nutrition course? I’m a trained Homeopath in the UK and have recently discovered ‘what the health’, ‘forks over knives’, The China Study etc and have now adopted a WFPB lifestyle as a result. I’m now thinking about studying to gain further knowledge and perhaps to help my patients/ clients too. Thanks, Rachel

  • First thing I noticed..your steering wheel is on the right side. Do you have the option in Canada for that, Derek? Just curious. I know in Europe the steering wheel is on the right, too. Anyway, so awesome to see a little bit of Victoria, BC, and get to experience Vegfest there. Those meals and treats looked rather yummy. 🙂 Thank you for sharing your day with us. xx

  • You guys live in Parksville? Crazy! I used to live there too, I was flying out of Qualicum Beach (I’m a pilot). Mostly I’ve lived in Squamish before I moved to Hong Kong (18 months ago), but often still go climbing in Horne Lake right near you guys! You’re in such a beautiful spot! Two of my friends were just talking about buying property in that area earlier today! Great articles guys! Keep ‘em coming! Maybe i’ll See you guys at another veg fest one day!

  • REally love your articles! You are both so fun! I have a question and not sure who to ask… but I think, since you are so fit, you may know the answer :). My friend (he’s 63) just had a TIA (something like a mini stroke)… had it whilst he was at the gym (!) He’s pretty fit.. Not vegan… Found at that he has high blood pressure and now on a few meds to bring it down. He’s doing lots of research now about food, etc. and how it affects heart stuff, BP, etc. (Yay!)… Doc told him he cannot use protein powder anymore — something about Billirubin (sp?), liver, etc… could drive up his BP. He worries about not getting enough protein now. His wife works with an ultra athlete who told her about Thorne Amino Acid Complex and that maybe he can use this instead of protein powder. Do you know anything about this? I worry about him taking all this isolated stuff . But I’ve been mainly high raw vegan for many years and have a little different perspective on things and want to respect other people’s paths. But I am open to learning about anything that might help my friend stay fit and healthy!! Would love your insight! Thank you! And thank you again for your inspiring articles!

  • New to your website, been vegan for the past 4 years and love it so far (bar the few cheese craves I still have once in a while). You really gotta check avantguardevegan’s (Gaz Oakley’s) youtube website too. Great recipes – great food! Not sponsoring or advertising him or anything but just sharing a really great source of food preparation!

  • Hey Derek, greetings from Poland. I recently started to follow your website and I need to admit that in no time it became a big game changer in my dietary habits. Effects are great and I’m feeling great. Thank you and keep it rolling! By the way, you make a really nice couple, not only visually, but I also like your charisma. 🙂

  • Hey! I’m kind of newish but have been perusal your vids for about a month. I came across your website because of your amazing backyard gym and stayed when I saw that you’re a vegan. You really helped me transition easier into veganism and I love every day of it! I started adding chia seeds, flax seeds, black pepper, and turmeric to a smoothie I’ve made for years to pump it up and love it! Now to add more calisthenics training! Thank you so much for all your help!

  • It was odd things seemed a little cool between you an Crystal at the start of the article. Great to see things warmed up between you two as the article progressed. The two of you are an ispiration and I was smiling through the whole article. Keep up the positive articles Derek, you are a welcome respite from the negativity that is being slung around among some of the other vegan YouTubers at the moment.

  • What a journey, always checking your website . For #AMM I would like to know if vegan protein powder (like pea protein) lose any of their nutrients if I boil it in a porridge or if I bake it in a recipe. Also I would like to know what do you think about waterkefir and about nutritional yeast. Do you think they improve the gut bacteria? Cheers from Argentina

  • I think it’s great that you do some gardening and support a sustainable life style. Maybe next summer plan a garden that has your normal food and also produces beans, nuts, and seeds for protein and do a 30 day challenge where you eat only food grown in your own yard. This is a goal that I’m working to achieve. I’f you could make it work, you will inspire thousands of people to live a more environmentally conscience life. Love your website ! Peace and Plants!

  • Love it brother!! It’s good to give our bodies cheat/rest days. That’s why we eat healthy so we can enjoy life to the fullest! I notice you have an amazingly positive attitude and great intuition of self love/care. I would be interested as im sure many of us if you made a article on loving your own body, maintaining a positive outlook while transitioning to a healthy lifestyle and healing your body through nature. As always love the articles and honor your mission to spread love( human and animal), positivity and healthy lifestyles.

  • A serious question. Do you guys smoke weed? I am from the UK but hear in Canada its pretty relaxed. And it will be legal soon! Or if you don’t smoke have you ever used weed in recipes or used it for its health benefits? So I guess this is a yes.and no… As well as a how why when what type of question 🙂
